Marc Cohn And Elizabeth Vargas Finally Split

After cheating on his wife Elizabeth Vargas during her stint in rehab back in November and not really ever stopping, Marc Cohn and his wife have decided to call it quits after 12 years of marriage. Over the weekend Elizabeth Vargas had a pretty big slip and has put herself back in rehab. The last time she was in rehab she didn't really have much of a chance to just focus on her sobriety because of what Cohn was doing while she was there. Then she gets out, goes back to work, watches their two kids while Marc keeps pretending he is a huge rock star instead of a one hit wonder. Yes, it is a very good song, but he acts like he is the best thing ever. For his part, Marc's rep did say that Marc supports Elizabeth in her fight to get sober. It is not like he could say he didn't support her, but at least he did have someone release a positive statement when he could have just stayed quiet. Their two kids are with him while Elizabeth is in rehab.

  2. Her drinking problem is HER drinking problem. I have no doubt that he cheated, but alcoholics are manipulative liars and it's much more painful to be the spouse of an alcoholic than the alcoholic.

    1. Cathy nailed it. Living with alkie is brutal.

    2. True @ Cathy and @auntliddy. Been there, done that. She either "didn't have a problem", "drank because of me", or "you have drinks too!". Tried to get her help but she refused. Eventually, she got the boot. From what I hear, her drinking still has not stopped.

  3. Agreed Cathy. Sorry he was unfulfilled but she's got a big problem beyond him that she needs to heal from.

  4. What is the song? I don't even know who he is.

  5. I don't judge Marc at all. They may have only been married in name, and he stayed to make sure the kids were cared for. It would be frightening to have to share your kids with an alcoholic and worry about them. It could be easier to stay to ensure there safety, and wait to divorce until they are older.

  6. Walking in Memphis was a pretty good song.

But his idea of supporting his wife is specious.

  8. The song is "Walking in Memphis", although he did have 2 other minor hits: "True Companion" (my cousin's wedding song) and "The Things We've Handed Down" (I love this song.)

As a recovering alcoholic, I wish Elizabeth nothing but the best on her road to recovery and sobriety.

  10. Good luck to her and her kids. Child of an alcoholic here and there is nothing better than seeing your parent sober and happy.

  11. To be fair, "Walking in Memphis" is quite frankly one of the best songs ever; but yes, he is most definitely a one-hit wonder.

  12. I've heard Cher version, but I could never get over how she pronounced Memphis as "Memm-phus".

Fun fact: Cohn beat Seal and Boyz II Men for the Best New Artist Grammy.

  13. When you have addiction tendencies your significant other can be one of the major reasons WHY you start abusing substances. If you're with someone who emotionally abuses you (or physically for that matter) all it's gonna do is make you reach for that bottle or pipe or whatever faster.

I have no idea who these people are or what their situation but it sounds like splitting up is the best thing for both of them. She needs to get herself straight without having to worry about him and hopefully he can take care of the kids while she does it.

Some people can drive you to drink, but it's up to you if you let them and if you decide to take up residence in bottle city. You should never put your kids in the middle of that even if it means giving up custody until you get your shit together. Hope she can get straight and keep sober.

  14. I see both sides here. I grew up in a house with an alcoholic and it was awful--you never knew what to expect. Then I grew up, married (and later divorced) an addict.
That being said, while it isn't fun to split, if you choose to stay married, give it your best shot and don't half ass it.

  15. @Cathy,Sherry & auntLiddy, it's tough on both ends:the enabler/enable the trigger/the bullet; it's not always THAT Black & White-bottom line is that they stay the F*** Away from each other(especially since he's knocked up this Aspen gal-that'd be a f***in' trigger for me).As I said, she keeps the Greenwich Home,He keeps the Colorado Home,They have Joint Custody of the 2 boys.-he keeps his mistress, she keeps her sanity.

  16. Rolo...As an addict I cannot argue with what she said. We are liars and manipulators. No one but us drives us to use.

    End of story.

  17. Why not just be decent and leave before you cheat? It is an option.

  18. Cathy, what you say has a touch of painful truth.

Trust me when I say addicts do suffer. I was grateful that negotiating my sobriety didn't have the added challenges of negotiating a relationship or family. It made my path forward easier because the climb wasn't as steep.

They know they broke trust. In those sober moments of reflection they know. And they know it may not be enough. The strong push past thar. Some don't.

    team get well Elizabeth

  23. Didn't she stand by him and nurse him back to health after he got SHOT?! I think I'm Team Elizabeth given that fact... :-/

  24. @Sherry,first of all, good on you mate for working on your recovery! -I don't think people realize what a daily battle it is-i'm not judging/blaming one side at all.I am No Stranger to such a situation..Just note that Marc's also a drinker & a self-appointed wine & jazz 'connoisseur'-& that can NOT be easy to be around which is why I suggested that they stay apart, each takes a home(CT.&CO.) & hash out their child visitation schedule. both get healthier & happier hopefully.

    Don't care. Still like you.

  26. Sorry, but Elizabeth Vargas gave up the prime time news, which she anchored, so she could have kids. No wonder she drinks. She blew her career forever right there.

    ReplyDelete
  27. so. having a 'career' is not the end all. As a matter of fact, many people would love nothing more than to kiss their so-called awesome,perk-heavy,bonus bloviated "Career" good bye if they could afford to do so.... me included.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think there is a lot of pain on both sides here. He was shot in the head at close range and lived...and he cheats. She made sacrifices for her career..and drinks. Sounds like they both need to get away from each other and do some healing.

  29. Thanks Yoj and rolotomassi ..I believe Cheryl nailed it there. They may just be better apart than together.

  30. So I'm the only one who thinks the song is mawkish dreck?

On topic, he shouldn't have cheated, but living with an alcoholic is pretty bloody tough.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm going to agree with Cathy - living with the alkie is so much harder. Amazingly enough he always said it was my fault he did what he did. 2 1/2 years after leaving his sorry ass I hear he was worse than ever and then he OD'd so he's no longer anyone's problem. Thank God!

  32. @minpingirl agree. Self medicating to try to blot out the horrible situation . Hope the kids are ok.

Your pregnant wife/girlfriend must have found that irritating.

  36. One of his songs- True Companion- was my wedding song. Don't think of him as a One Hit Wonder.

  37. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp6zoc84NcU

Yeah, if you look at the comments for the True Companion video, people still use it a lot, 20 years later. Though I think it's on a lot of lists from sites like The Knot and brides don't necessarily know it before trying to find a song.

Vargas didn't give up her career for kids; her second baby was ill-timed for a lot of inside baseball shenanigans at ABC News. She and Bob Woodruff were named co-anchors after Peter Jennings died. Woodruff was hurt in Iraq, and a few months later Vargas went on maternity leave a bit early. Charlie Gibson ended up with the solo anchor chair for World News Tonight.
