Joan Rivers In Critical Condition

While undergoing a procedure on her throat this morning, Joan Rivers stopped breathing and suffered cardiac arrest. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital this morning and her daughter Joan Rivers is flying to NYC to be with her mom.

  5. Oh no, not yet. Get well soonest, Joan!

  6. I hope she's okay too.

  7. I didn't realize she's 81 until I just read it in an article, holy cow. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  8. I don't exactly like her but I do wish her a speedy recovery and best wishes to her family.

  9. How awful! I love Joan - saw some of her old stand up recently. She was and is really funny!

  10. Original Joan Rivers stand up was fun. I hope she improves.

  11. AJ,+1. We're a snarky little pack. I suspect we've all enjoyed and/or been inspired by her willingness talk snark to power.

Here's to a speedy and complete recovery.

  12. Fuck. This is the worst news ever. This broad is tough. She better pull through.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Maybe shes still strong enough to pull through. Best wishes.

  14. I hope she gets better soon. I love Joan Rivers. Even as a kid I knew she was important. She told jokes like men, but from a woman's point of view. There was nobody else like her.
Now, you can't move for all the Joan inspired comediennes. And that's a good thing.

  15. "Her daughter Joan Rivers"? Did someone forget their morning coffee?

Best wishes for the Queen of Snark. 81 years old and still delivering, that's talent.

  16. Well shit, I can't help but love her, she was a great comedian and was instrumental in bringing women into comedy. HHy husband watched the celebrity apprentice with her on it and she was amazing - really worked hard. As she's gotten older she's gotten a bit too snarky sometimes, but still love. Hope she pulls thru.

  17. Argh. I am a Joan fan.
On either the last episode, or one prior to that, she made a joke about always being prepared (as in attire) and then she said, "that's why I always where this " and she revealed inside her shoe she was wearing a toe tag.
I thought, "uh Nooo. Bad karma".

I hope she's okay too. She does seem pretty tough. I know she's pretty dang smart and also pretty nice ( aside from her snarky humor).

    1. Talking about Fashion Police, that is.

  18. What sort of procedure was she having? When they say throat do they mean her neck? Sounds like she was having more plastic surgery in an office rather than a hospital.

Hope this tough broad pulls through!

  19. I loved her documentary "Pieces of Me". It really just showed that the funniest people are usually the most depressed people. Hope she makes it but if she doesn't that's fine too because she had a great run.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Excuse me I meant "A Piece of Work" lol

  21. She's been around forever and is a trailblazer for female comedians.

If she survives it will be a hard road back to recovery. Here's hoping for the best. Joan is one tough nut.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Sherry - the article I read said it was surgery for her vocal chords.

Joan is friggin' hilarious. I know she's too much for some people...but I love that about her. She just doesn't give a shit and I love, love, love that!!

Hope she makes a full recovery.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If you watched the show Melissa would try to talk her out of more plastic surgery every time. And Joan would go ahead and do it. This is Melissa's nightmare though she is still alive at least. All surgery is risky and Joan is over 80.

  24. She was just on The Shopping Channel - she reminds me of my dad, over 80 but still sharper and more active than some 20 year olds. Hope she will be OK. She is indeed one of the ultimate fighters in Hollywood.

  25. Fashion Police will fold if she passes.
I blame Lena Dunham. She wears that ugly crap just to get Joan upset!

    1. You nailed it! Joan's poor heart just couldn't take it anymore.
Hoping for a full recovery Joan!! Love your work always.

  26. I remember her saying the scariest thing she faced was if there was a day in her calendar with nothing on it. It would mean that no one wanted her anymore. Very talented, super hardworking lady. She was on The Shopping Channel up here just last week or 2, hope she's okay.

  27. Not a fan but don't wish her dead. Vanity surgery is not worth the risk that anesthesia poses.

    ReplyDelete
  28. She didn't take shit from anyone. We need more people like that in the world. RIP.

Under anesthesia was the only way death could get her in his clutches. If she was in control of her faculties, she would have shape shifted into the form of something w/ healthy heart and lungs.

  29. I could see it might be vocal chords because her voice has been getting noticeably raspier. It said procedure could it have been a scope?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Daily Mail said it was surgery on her throat for her vocal chords in a clinic.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks Nora and Tina. Wow that's pretty scary. I like how the Count has described her!

  32. I would hope she recovers from this. She deserves a better exit. I know she used to be very funny but now she is very mean spirited. Perhaps she will recover and get a renewed appreciation for life. At least I hope so. But at 80 years old this sort of thing is very bad

    1. I think she about to be. The plastic parts will Live Forever tho! No more tears ppl, chin up! Its only the neck down that will turn to dust...the neck up will have the shelf life of a twinkie (2000yrs/give or take)

  39. Her rep said she is unconscious but stable but it worries me is the length of time to get from the clinic to the hospital.

    ReplyDelete
  40. And they are probably waiting for poor Melissa to get there, that's 4 - 5 hour flight right.

    ReplyDelete
  41. We have 24hr comedy radio station here and they often play vintage clips from the older comedians. Joan's old stuff is really funny and quite unique.

Henry Bushkin's book about Johnny Carson has a lot of background info about the feud with Joan Rivers. She isn't the backstabber Johnny made her out to be.

    1. Her hubby's lies to Carson and all around is what started the feud.

  42. May she have a safe and speedy recovery.

  43. Would you have all the stand-up comedians stop working then. Were Lenny Bruce or Richard Pryor all sweetness and light. No. George Carlin was a master at snark on a wider level. I think they also get crankier as they get older. I saw him locally before he died and man he was much much snarkier, funny but took me by surprise a bit. Probably because I'd always seen him on TV vs live and he hated censorship.

All the talk show comedians that make fun of people everyday, the gossip columnists and the gossip sites like this one and all the people who comment on them, let alone Twitter and Facebook.

  44. She is one of the hardest working people in the biz. And super nice. I have a friend that sometimes styles her and she's even worn some of my friends fashions. I do hope she will be alright. Thoughts and prayers for her and her family.

  45. Joan's a fighter….

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love her. I saw her in Vegas years ago and she was hilarious. Her books are good too. She struck me as someone who kept working because they were always afraid of being broke. Like Barbara Walters. They knew what it was like to struggle and fight in a "man's world" and they were never going back there. I hope she pulls through, the jokes she'd have after this would be too funny. Can we tawk?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Honestly, I don't think she will make it, simply because of her age. My guess is they are keeping her on life support until Melissa can get there.

I appreciate what she did for female comedians. (Always thought Johnny Carson was a jealous old thing to ban her.) She's talked a lot about all the sexist shit she had to go through, which is infuriating and interesting at the same time. I recall she was not allowed to say the word "pregnant" on-air when she was pregnant with Melissa. She had to say, "I am expecting the pitter-patter of little feet"!

    get well Joan

  49. From E! News 18 minutes ago

Joan Rivers' condition has been upgraded to stable, hours after the 81-year-old comedienne and host of E!'s Fashion Police was hospitalized for complications from throat surgery, while more details about her health scare have been revealed.

She was rushed to a hospital in New York City on Thursday after she stopped breathing while undergoing a minor endoscopic procedure at a medical clinic, a source told E! News.

Her daughter and frequent co-star, Melissa Rivers, 46, and Melissa's son, Cooper, 13, have flown to the city to be by Joan's side.

"They were putting a scope down her throat to check her vocal cords," the source said. "She stopped breathing."

"This was not major surgery," the source said, adding that Joan was sedated while undergoing the operation and that it is unclear what medication was used."

  50. Last night I stayed up and watched "Dear Zachary" and bawled my eyes out

Wake up to see this news and I'm tearing up again. I'm going to be walking around with puffy eyes all day

Love me some Joan - she tells it like it is and I find that refreshing

Keeping my fingers crossed for good news

  51. Whoa! She seems so bullet proof I had to re-read this cause I didn't believe it. I hope she makes a speedy full recovery.

  52. A lot of very mean-spirited things being said about her on Twitter. Ha ha... karma, I guess. Never could this lady, her ugly mouth or her plastic head.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Thank all the gods she's going to make it, and at the same time, thank all the gods it wasn't another lift.
After all the Dr told her one more lift and she'll be sporting a van dyke.

  54. Cheryl, I never thought saw, she's still sad about what happened with Johnny, who was the backstabber there really. The woman got her own show, a WOMAN and she was the first. Of course she takes the job. Johnny never spoke to her again. He's a prick.

  55. Any surgery for a senior gets risky. A lot greater chance of strokes also.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh god I hope she pulls through. I love her. It's too much to lose her and Robin Williams in a single month.

  57. If making a punchline out of the Cleveland kidnapping victims, and then saying Palestinians deserve to be dead doesn't give all those singing her praises pause for thought...

  58. I was afraid to say something negative, but I'm kind of glad that Jerry and Amore let me know that I'm not alone in really not caring. That might make me a horrible, horrible person, but then again, so is she. *shrug*

    1. +1. Finally, that old bird is speechless. Bow that deserves a round of applause lol.

I couldnt be more apathetic about this. She is a nasty piece of work and I never much cared for her buttt for her family's sake I hope all ends well for her.

See, even I can say something quasi nice about her.

    2. My sentence is a contextual clustereff. I meant: I couldn't be less apathetic. And I have no clue how bow got in there. Lol... thank God its the end of the day... *vapid yawn*

  59. I wish her the best as I do everyone. If she pulls through, I agree with Michael that I hope her brush with death serves as incentive to reevaluate her later life choices.

    ReplyDelete
  60. @B626
Joan would approve of that joke!

I don't blame Joan for becoming more negative as the years and decades went by. Think of the changes that she's witnessed in showbusiness. In her youth, only the most exceptional could be famous. Exceptionally talented or exceptionally charismatic or exceptionally beautiful (and in very rare cases, all three).
As Fran Lebowitz said, we now have "too much democracy in the culture, not enough democracy in the society".

    ReplyDelete
  61. I hope that Joan pulls through this.

  62. She used to be really funny. She changed a lot after her husband died, a lot more acerbic and less humorous, and is even more so after all her plastic surgeries. I don't watch her on red carpets but I do know she can be quite nasty with a lot of people. Wish her well, and hope she recovers soon.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I know that most people in her field (comedians) have a great amount of respect for her. People who are saying these negative and hateful things about her are only thinking of "Fashion Police Joan" who is a snarky bitch, a personality she crafted for the show. That is only a small piece of a much greater body of work that spanned decades before E! was even on television. She is a legend and will be greatly missed when she is gone.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I liked her. However her recent comments regarding Palestine put a dampener on this.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Wishing her the best.

    ReplyDelete
  66. She invented the red carpet banter. No one asked who are you wearing or made funny jokes before her. She is a pioneer. Get better Joan.

  67. @sugarbread, exactly..i don't think a lot of folks realize the road she paved...Carol Burnett always pays homage to her- & hell, it's Carol Burnett saying this sooo,...
