Four For Friday - The Cult
So, when exactly do the dog days of summer begin? Is that a July thing? Is there ever really a dog day of summer? I think most people would prefer even a really hot summer day to being ice cold in the middle of winter. Are there cat days of summer? Have you noticed there are dog days of summer and people are dog tired, but no one ever mentions cats. Anyway, I will be here all weekend and if you would like to follow me on Twitter, I am @entylawyer
How is it that this actress is rolling in dough? I mean she could literally shower with $100 bills every few minutes and not run out of money. She has never really been higher than A- list and that was almost two decades ago. Since then, when she was a sort of sex symbol to now she has mainly popped up in a movie or two or three and tried her hand at some really bad television. She keeps making money though and spouting off on some crazy ideas she thinks will catch on and sharing those ideas with the world. The thing is when she was at her peak she made some investments. Well, one major investment. She bought up about a third of a company that makes its money convincing other people to part with their money. Kind of one part Scientology and another part timeshare like pressure to buy while locked up with other people over the course of a few days. Our actress was a big proponent of it and talked about it all the time but suddenly stopped mentioning it after she bought a big piece of it. Oh, her hand prints are all over the company from the things she sells with her name on it there that most people are encouraged to buy at a special discount which only sees our actress make a 300% profit compared to a 10% profit through normal channels. She makes millions of dollars a year running this thing and only does movies and television shows to do the press so people don't forget her face or her name so when she shows up at one of these events people will be awed to see her and more likely to spend big bucks not knowing she is the one who is making the money and is not just a customer.
Morgan Fairchild?
ReplyDeleteSuzanne Summers?
ReplyDeleteWe are none too definite about our answers Lurker.
DeleteSomers
ReplyDeleteThe only one I got us Victoria Principal and that is probs wrong.
ReplyDeleteYeah that's a real good one forgot about her #winner
ReplyDeletesuzanne summers
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's Suzanne. I just saw a commercial with her last night hawking a "three way"...poncho.
ReplyDeleteNo! That's hilarious!
DeleteYep doesn't fit timeline either
ReplyDeleteI am at loss but to be different I am thinking a sistah, Vivica Fox?

ReplyDeleteAlicia Silverstone. Weird ideas being chewing her kids food for them
ReplyDeleteRaquel Welch
ReplyDeleteViolet--nope--not strong with my convictions..but she came to mind first..lol
ReplyDeleteSuzanne somers. She got found out taking adderall & laxatives to maintain her weight.
ReplyDelete@skippy
DeleteNo way!! I hadn't heard that! I was really buying into her fountain of youth vitamin regimen and bio-identical hormone replacement. Shame on her :(
(And I'm suddenly having a SATC movie flashback. Did I just mix up Samantha with Suzanne? I'm seriously perplexed)
Jane Fonda.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Bo Derek? I am trying to see what business/organization she is linked to...
ReplyDeleteSuzanne is always promoting something crazy...and the Menopause "Cure crap"...by outsmarting the "Hoormoneeeesss" (read the My Big Fat Greek Wedding style please). Her fitness things, and now ponchos..lol
ReplyDeleteI feel like this could be Molly Ringwald...especially with the "sort of sex symbol" statement. She was never a classic sex symbol but...she was still very attractive to a lot of men.
ReplyDeleteI wanted this to be Heather Graham, but what would be her company?
ReplyDeleteWasn't Linda Evans involved with a cult? Also had a skin rejuvenating device
ReplyDeleteKim Basinger. Didn't she even buy a town called Braselton in GA?
ReplyDeleteSuzanne is too old for blind..she was a sex symbol30 years or more ago...it's someone who peaked 20 years ago....
ReplyDeleteAngie Everhart
ReplyDeleteIt seems Bo Derek was big into Rainforest Conservation in 2011 and earlier. Perhaps the business venture has to do with that? Can you "buy" a portion of the rainforest to save it? Kind of like how you can purchase and name your own star?
ReplyDeleteNo clue but all the guesses sound good.

ReplyDeleteJamie Lee Curtis - she tweets or blogs a lot of her opinions & shills for Activia.
ReplyDeleteSuzanne certainly could shower with 100 $ bills, girlfriend makes bank! But I hope it's not her.
ReplyDeleteHas Brooke Shields ever shilled something of the sort?
ReplyDeleteLaZBoy furniture.
Delete@Sunny that's exactly what I was thinking, that Samantha swore by it, haha!
ReplyDeleteSounds like Landmark Training. A friend of mine dragged me to one and it was pretty much getting locked in a room for 12 hours with 50 people and getting pressured to share feelings and then sign up for more sessions. Semi-cult-ish. No idea about the celebrity but if anyone wants to do a little googling, I'm sure we could find celebs involved in it.
ReplyDeleteBrooke shills for La-Z-Boy furniture. But they have nice stuff and definitely not discount.
ReplyDeleteVALERIE PERRINE is living off her hot tomato money decades later.
ReplyDeleteX. X. O. O. VALERIE
No she's not. She has lots of medical problems.
DeleteSharon Stone came to mind for some reason but not sure if she's shilling anything or even acting occasionally.
ReplyDeleteLinda Evans was bamboozled by noted fraudster JZ Knight. The Knight divorce trial (hubby wanted his cut) revealed all the juicy deets of the fraud.
ReplyDeleteMany moons ago I saw Ms Evans (or her double) holding on to a barstool in Palm Springs. Shitfaced happy and with so.e arm candy not named Yanni....

ReplyDeleteEnty, the term "dog days of summer" refers to the time when the "Dog Star", Sirius is in conjunction with the sun. Not sure if there is a "Cat Star".... Just sayin'....

ReplyDeleteJane Fonda? Only having trouble with the '2 decades' - would be more like 4 decades
ReplyDeleteAnd Jane is/was a devout activist for several causes
ReplyDeleteI buy Somers for this. Who knew Chrissy could cure cancer and menopause?!
ReplyDeleteI love the Alicia Silverstone guess. 20 years ago is about when Clueless came out. She was a sex symbol of sorts because she was underage. She writes books about her parenting philosophy which is sharing with the world. Great guess, Vera.
ReplyDeletethanks Jane!
ReplyDeleteBo Derek had a pet line of of products a while back (didn't include cat products though) for horses and dogs. I don't this is her because her hays at was 1980. This someone who come to showbiz in about 1990.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Cameron Diaz but she does a shot ton of films.
^hayday
DeleteKari Michaelsen. She was on Gimme a Break. Anyway she is a "motivational speaker", whatever that means. Anyway, she shows up at those Get Motivated seminars they have around the country. It's one of those get rich quick housing schemes. They lure you in with the promise of meeting Donald Trump, Bill Cosby, or some other celebrity.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking it is Somers though. Plus Enty was talking about "summer heat" right off the bat.
ReplyDeleteI think this is supposed to be thinly veiled about Somers.
ReplyDeleteSomers? I've not seen a Thigh Master ad in years!
ReplyDeleteKirstie Alley
ReplyDeleteI feel like it has to be a scientologist person because the blind is titled "The Cult"
ReplyDeleteIt could just be a coincidence but she bought a third of the company (Three's company)
ReplyDeleteNo way is this Suzanne Somers. She peaked about 35 years ago, and she has hardly done any movies. Bo Derek
ReplyDeletedoesn't fit the timeline either. This has to be someone who was hot in the early to mid 90's, so Alicia Silverstone could be a good guess.
I don't know anything about this site, but I googled "Alicia Silverstone net worth" and this is certainly interesting:
ReplyDeletehttp://en.mediamass.net/people/alicia-silverstone/highest-paid.html
(Sorry about the non-clicky link.)
ReplyDeleteI think this is Linda Evans and the group is the Ramtha School of Enlightenment here in Yelm, WA. It's run by a woman named JZ Knight who claims to channel the spirit of an ancient warrior or something. Very much a cult and lots of $$ attached.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's Chrissy Snow, but I was just at the library and was surprised by how many books this woman has out. Books on menopause, aging, beauty, diet, surviving cancer, and several biographies. I know she probably doesn't write them but she must have a small "literary" empire.
ReplyDeleteI think Goober got it. I like the Linda Evans guess.
ReplyDeleteSomers.
ReplyDeleteHmm, perhaps Kristi Alley. Has lots of dogs (dog days). was a somewhat sex symbol, couple of movies, look who's talking et ..,back on tv for Veronical's closet and a scientologist.
ReplyDeleteSomers was in Step By Step about twenty years ago, which was a pretty solid career revival for her. I could buy this being her.
ReplyDeleteKristy Alley by a landslide are you kidding? So obv
ReplyDeleteKristy Alley by a landslide are you kidding? So obv
ReplyDeleteOMG! There's Company is NOT really bad tv! It's masterful! Bite your tongues people! How can you knock My MAN Mr. Ferley!! Not to mention John Ritter, God rest his beautiful, comic soul...
ReplyDeleteAs for Kirstie, after DWTS she had a posh lil party to kick off a product. I think it was some vitamin juice/water. I thought the party was held at a brick n mortar store (opening) for the product in L.A.
ReplyDeleteI don't think this is Soners bcuz she's OBVIOUSLY been selling alllll kindsocrap; successfully yes. But she's not kickin back behind the scenes of things, she's promoting it all and always has been.
1st thought I had was Michelke Pheifer. IDKY
Then Raquel Welch. But she does have wigs and she promotes them.
Then I thought if Stone and Kirstie
@syf.. kirstie got sued and lost for ORGANIC LIAISON being a fraudulent product..
ReplyDeleteSuzanne Somers has her name plastered over everything she sells.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of anything promotes that doesn't included her name.
@PS. Right on! The amount of physical and comedic timing between those three was insane! That show still makes me laugh so hard!
ReplyDeleteAlso up thread Suzanne does write her own books. She's quite talented.
Pam Anderson.
ReplyDeletekirstie and jenny craig
ReplyDelete@ Goober - I go with your answer!
ReplyDeleteI kept thinking of Kirsty Alley
ReplyDeleteOK, a few things:
ReplyDelete1) for some reason, the wording in this blind has me thinking that the investment is in a weight loss company like jenny craig or weight watchers.
2) the blind seems to indicate that the actress was a sex symbol within the last two decades, which means people like bo derek, morgan fairchild, and suzanne summers are probably too old.
what about Valerie Bertinelli w/ Jenny Craig?
Alicia silverstone,
ReplyDeleteLandmark.

ReplyDeleteI want to say this sounds like Sharon Stone except for the bad television thing.
ReplyDeleteReally not sure.
Suzanne Sommers isn't from 20 years ago, she's from 40 years ago. It's someone who was at her height mid- to late-1990s. I would say Cindy Crawford with all the fake anti-aging shit she hocks in those infomercials but it needs to be an actress. Same time frame though.
ReplyDeleteHow about Marilu Henner?
ReplyDelete@Kittyhawk--So human Cuisinart Alicia S is associated w/Landmark? Eeew; isn't she ooky enough on her own? Couldn't remember the name til Michael E's comment, but am sure that's one of the $$-making/motivational schemes using Scilon/EST-type cultic hooks to attract & retain members.
ReplyDeleteScientology has a few management-training franchises under its corporate umbrella (part of WISE, I think), but they're aimed at niche markets--& nobody can "invest" in any part of scientology for their own profit. So it should not be Kirstie; like LRH himself, Scilons are just attracted by diet/nutritional rackets.
@Tongue N Cheek, yay! Checked this thread mainly to see if anyone Sirius-ly addressed the "dog days" issue. The joke fell flat, as even readers who don't know could find out in seconds... it's still the Google Era, right? ComedyEnt is better at snark. But of all the Alt-Ents, only ESL-Ent seems to be a Google fan. At least, I think that's why those posts read like pastes from G Translate.
I didn't originally think so but I have to go with Suzanne Somers because of the 'really bad tv' clue, she was on one of the housewives shows a year or two ago showing some anti-aging stuff to the other housewives. I am not sure what company she invested in, but I can't think of anyone else that fits
ReplyDeleteFirst one tha popped into my head was Victoria Principal, but can see this being Somers.
