Hey sistah deafie! Profoundly deaf in left ear since birth; worsening and worsening right ear. I haven't worn aids since I was a teenager, hated those things! Do you sign? Pretty sure you lip-read.
I started to lose my hearing in my 20s Meanie. Perfect hearing until then. It's getting progressively worse over the years but I manage well with aids. No need for signing. I suspect I lip read without knowing I do it.
There's a lot of idiotic nonsense out there I can do w/o hearing but there's plenty of things to see. I had an eye operation when I was young and my face was bandaged and I couldn't see fir days wasn't something I would want permanently.
I took classes in sign language and some of the hearing impaired, actually most, wld rather be blind than deaf. They say with deafness you miss sooo much. After spending morning with 4 grandchildren, ages 11 to 3, part time in car, i may be leaning toward deaf, lol
This is a timely and touchy subject for me. A woman I know was diiagnosed with a disease that was causing her to go blind. She decided she couldn't live that way and killed herself. A disability must be extremely hard to adjust to but I would think I could endure anything with the help of my loved ones and friends.
The thought of losing my sight scares the s**t out of me tbh. There was a UK policeman who was blinded when he was shot in the face - he killed himself a year or so later. Just could never come to terms with losing his sight. Heartbreaking.
As much as I adore music, I'd rather lose my hearing. I'm just too visual -- even if a recent study tried to tell me that that's actually a myth -- and I don't know if this old dog could learn Braille for all my book-readin'.
Ot, did anyone see angie jolie tape that supisedly shows he"r wild eyed and in a filthy apartment raving on the phone. ". Ok, i saw it, she is antsy, but carrying sane conversation, not wild eyed, seems calm, and apt my be messy but not filthy. Huge exaggeration.
Hearing easily. I'm not much of a music lover, and my bff is a sign language interpreter for the Deaf, so he could hook me up with learning how to sign.
I'm legally blind and have been since birth. I live and breathe music. So I'd have to go with being a blindie. I already know what it's like and I'd curl up and die if I couldn't hear music.
I have already thought about this: hearing (I did lose some hearing in my right ear). I am way too visually oriented, an illustrator by training, and losing my sight would mean losing my livelihood.
That is a tough choice. Logically, I would think sight is more important, but my love of music, and not being able to hear it and sing would be devastating.
My father was born without 3/4 of his sight in one eye and 1/2 in the other. My mom lost 3/4 of her hearing in one ear and 1/4 in the other in her 20s. Surgery for dad poses too much risk of full blindness so he just functions the way he is. Most people have no idea he is impaired. Mom has had hearing aids for 30 years. She upgrades them regularly but still picks up too much background noise, misses a lot, and has many people tell her "never mind" when asked to repeat themselves. Seeing their impairments up close, it's clear that dad has an easier time than mom...but if we're talking about full sensory loss I would choose to give up my hearing. I've never gotten as much joy out of sound as I have the beautiful things I've seen.
I have a blind friend/ex coworker and I'm amazed at the things he can do even tho he can't see. Hell he even changed my flat tire on the turnpike one day while I was driving him home. So with that side I would rather be blind.
This is a hard one. For safety and life function I would like to have my sight but I've been told that being deaf can be very lonely. I'm such a social person that might be harder. The potential isolation is pretty scary.

hearing by far
ReplyDeletelosing sight is a larger loss of control
Ugh. Now 80% deaf; was born hearing-impaired, so I guess I'm used to not having full hearing.
ReplyDeleteBeing blind would suck.
Me too meanie!! Double hearing aided. Deaf rather than blind in a heartbeat.

DeleteI love when you guys share these things, it's interesting to know more about who you are.

Hearing, just because of Sophia Vergara & David Beckham.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to go hearing if I must pick.
ReplyDeleteI would rather lose my sight than my hearing. Neither would be good, but I think I could adapt better to loss of sight than to loss of hearing.
ReplyDeleteHearing. I'd feel frightened if I couldn't see.
ReplyDeleteUm, neither. Because you need both to fully appreciate this ;)
ReplyDeleteBest scene in cinematic history!!

ReplyDeleteSorry to be a huge downer
Delete:( @helen, I'm so very sorry for your loss.
DeleteThanks Meanie. It was just last month and has been such a shock for all who loved and knew her.

DeleteSo sorry for your loss Helen. I have a family member with a similar disease. Good thoughts your way.
DeleteWow, these accounts are heartbreaking. So sorry Helen but glad u shared with these kind peeps here.
DeleteI'm going to count my blessings.
An interesting question, but I'm afraid I'm a bit biased
ReplyDeleteCharlie. Sensory impaired internet chums.
Delete@1 i Charlie. My first assumption about your screen name had nothing to do with your vision.

ReplyDeleteHearing..beacause of Britney Spears

ReplyDeleteBut losing my sight? I can't imagine the horror.
Hearing. I know (and teach) sign language.
ReplyDeleteI am not going here
ReplyDeleteHearing. Most of the time I just want people to shut up anyway.
ReplyDeletePlus, I wouldn't be able to paint my nails or do technical editing if I were blind.
Neither
ReplyDeleteFantasy will set you free

ReplyDelete@Sifi, well you sure do well here with what you got. (-:
DeleteProps to u!!
Hearing. During my youth I grew accustomed to porn on mute. Would make relationships much easier also.
ReplyDeleteGod forbid my hearing

ReplyDeleteI am grateful to have both.
And @Helen, how very sad. I'm sorry for her family and loved ones.
ReplyDeleteHearing. I prefer my silence.
ReplyDeleteI'd rather lose my hearing. People lie, you'd have to pay attention to what they do, not what they say...
ReplyDeleteMusic means so much to me!!!!!!! I'd have to choose sight....

ReplyDeleteHearing. Then I wouldn't have to listen to the drama queen I work with every fcking day.

ReplyDeleteHorrible thing to think about, but I guess I would rather lose hearing. The thought of never seeing my kids' faces again is awful.
ReplyDeleteHearing. I need my sight to see. Also I'm super creative and artsy, losing that would be like losing my soul. :(
