Your Turn

Do you go to as many concerts now as you did when you were younger?

  1. No. Too much $$$$ (Not to mention it's rare for quality acts to make it all the way up here).

    1. For marginal legal advice? I considered going to that in Anaheim(?), but I was too lazy. My dad always listened to him, my mom hated his voice, I love him every morn. I feel like a nerd, but I only listen to KFI now. NERD ALERT!
Now I know why ur feet are burned. It's Frickin hot here!!!

  3. I dont go to any concerts I'm not refinancing any loans for tickets to see that shit. I saw everybody I ever wanted to see when I was young and they are still around now at 10x the price. No thanx!

  4. Never did go to many. I have really sensitive ears and loud noises bother me.

  5. nope. I hate crowds and blowing money on stupid shit.

  6. I probably go to a lot more now than when I was younger since I married a musician.

  7. I've never been to one.

  8. I don't go to that many now but I did recently see New Order! It was so fun! Made me want to go to more concerts.

    2. I love New Order. They didn't come to my city but were in LA. We tried to go but couldn't work out the dates.

  9. well I don't really like Pop music---so 150 dollar Katy Perry ticket would not be in my future. But I love indie rock and you name a band chances are I have seen them at some point. I went to school in a small liberal town that always had up and coming bands play before they became huge. I have seen and hung out with such acts as Arcade Fire at tiny tiny venues. I just saw Beck and next week will go see Modest Mouse...

    1. derek, it was perfect! Played all the old favorites for the oldies like me and some new songs that were great too! I also saw Heart too when they came to town. They were amazing. I have no shame in my love for Heart!

Love Modest Mouse. Hope that is a good show.

  11. About the same, however, I am excited to take my Dad to see Def Leppard and KISS on the 29th of Aug. He'd never seen KISS live and watched the concert on Yahoo last Saturday and after it was over said he had to go see them live so I ordered tickets five minutes later.

    2. Meant beatles. Forgot leon russell. Saw Hall and Oated in a movie theatre; i guess theatres were trying that at the time, worked out pretty good.

  15. No. My 26 yr old is all pumped up for Riot Fest. Ugh. The heat, crowds would drive me insane

  16. No - I used to live in a big city and went to concerts and shows in bars all the time. Now the big concerts just seem like a hassle, although I just saw Imagine Dragons & had a good time.

  17. In 2006, I met up with a bunch of music loving people and was going to more concerts than I ever did when I was younger up until the last couple of years. When I was younger before internet I could neither afford decent tickets, nor could I take time off work to line up the night before and get to the ticket office at 10 am and I refused to pay scalper prices.

Been getting back in touch with some of those people again and seen a few good concerts this year but I also find a lot of the artists I like are not touring this year or not coming up this way. Last concert was a small club venue with Blue October. And I actually enjoy watching opening acts and Blue October had two awesome opening bands from Austin. Which reminds me I need to put a trip to Austin on the bucket list.

  18. @Anjelika--the one in Toronto? I wanted to see The Cure--but a lot of acts I don't wanna see. Actually for all the boasting about bands I have seen I have never been to an actual "festival" something like a Coachella would drive me mad.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I saw bunches in high school and college--tickets were cheaper then or were free on campus--but I don't think I have been to a concert since... Duran Duran in 2005 (whenever the original 5 guys toured for Astronaut). I just don't have that kind of disposable income to do it regularly.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just the ones I wanna see that fall on weekends.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hell no! I'm too old for that shiz! Plus all the bands I like quit touring like 10 years ago. I'm in bed by 10 now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Dena, I am so jealous you saw Imagine Dragons! I love them and their energy!

The last concert I went to was U2. I won the tickets and they weren't nosebleeds. It was a great concert, but no way in hell would I have dropped the $300 (EACH) that the tickets were worth, even to see my Bono. (Sorry, IJU, I know he's a reported tool but I still love him. :)

  23. At a ripe old age I experienced my first outdoor music festivals, one was Ottawa Bluesfest but we also went VIP which made it more awesome, and I have a friend who lives in Maryland and we went to two Virgin Music Festivals one in Baltimore, and then they moved it to some park in Columbia Maryland? We got lucky weatherwise with all three festivals, not too hot, and the crowds were quite civilized. Both years of Virgin Music Festival had great lineups but now the Festival is aiming for a younger and younger audience so the music is not appealing to us anymore whereas before they had a good mix. And I am not sure Virgin is still doing the music festivals?

  24. @Seven---U2 is great live---I've seen them a couple of times. But I do hate the nosebleed section. My friend gulited me into going to see Pink with her (who I don't really like.) 80 bucks for DEAD LAST row and a metal stair railing between my legs. and old drunk cougars puking. worst concert ever. could not see a thing.

  25. @ Derek no the one in Colorado a few years back I took both of my kids to see The Cure at Red Rocks now that was incredible!

    1. @Anjelicka64 I would LOVE to see a concert at Red Rocks!

    2. It was AMAZING! Red Rocks is a Kool venue to see a concert

  26. @Tina---I don't think they are
@Anjelicka---you sound like a cool mom! My parents surprised me with Blondie tickets once and that was awesome

  27. Definitely more now than when I was younger. Growing up I lived in rural Ga with super-strict parents (no concerts 4 meez); I then moved to other places in the south, but it sucked bc most of the time bands totally phone it in when they played our crowds. Now that I live in Portland, Or, I try to gobble up as much music as I can! It's a lot of fun making up for lost time. PS, first concert: Skynard with the Doobies, Jax, Fla, 1996.

  28. No, they cost too fucking much now.

I DO pay to see FIONA APPLE (yes Count, I was at her sold out concert at the Greek Theater - more than 40 seats - haha)

I also pay to see Soundgarden!!

  29. @Paris- love Fiona Apple since Tidal came out and I was like 10

  31. Nope. Not much money, parking lots suck, and my kid would probably hunt me down there. Plus, my concert buddy decided to move back to South Dakota and become Mayor of his home town.

  32. I think more now, which is unusual. I relocated to Florida from Los Angeles where I had been going to concerts since the 70's and saw some great stuff. Anymore, I had stuck to the H'wood bowl as it was affordable. Now I live on a barrier island with an awesome small 3490 seat outdoor amphitheater that gets great acts so I have been about 6x in the past year, highly unusual! Next up is CSN 2nd week of Aug...woot! Just saw Weezer and Carlos Santana past couple months and BareNakedLadies last winter.

  33. No way, I hate crowds and love my comfort

  34. Just went to see Queen+Adam Lambert last week at Madison Square Garden, the first stadium concert I've been to in years. It was fun. Glambert was in good voice and had great costumes - at one point he came out in a fake-fur leopard-print business suit and a glittering crown - and the crowd was mixed-age and pretty into the music. The only negative was long, long, long guitar and drum solos from the older members of Queen. It's not 1974 any more, guys.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Derek Thankyou! Just carrying on the tradition my mom took me to see the Stones when I was 16

    ReplyDelete
  36. Me too Omar I bet any concert at Red Rocks, well rocks.

  38. I saw Springsteen in Albany. I thought I was too old for the "standing on the floor" stuff. I was sitting for about three songs in three hours. I was right.

  39. love going to see live shows!! saw nas and dave chapelle at radio city music hall a couple weeks ago (amazing), damian marley a couple weeks before that.. saw bob dylan on his last tour with wilco and my morning jacket, and maybe the yeah yeah yeahs and guided by voices in between?? although, fuck ticketmaster (not that i don't keep using them).. and bad religion's coming up!!

  40. No. Ticket prices are ridiculously stupid.

The only two that were worth it :

Coldplay $76 for floors 2 yrs ago

Justin Timberlake $175 for an AWESOME show

    Otherwise - not

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was just debating whether to see Paul McCartney at Petco Park. It's probably too late now to get tix.

I miss the JazzFest and the the old street scene in San Diego. There were lots of acts for one price. People were nice once upon a time.

Now days it's not the ticket price, but more about the crowds, getting to/from a venue, and paying too much for drinks.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Nope. I wish I could, but no. Kids and work and other responsibilities get in the way.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nah. I go to maybe 1 or 2 per year, that is actually more than when I was young, broke and working 7 days a week.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I used to go to more before kids and all those assholes started reselling them for crazy prices on stubhub and the like.
That said, my inner 90s fan girl is coming out this weekend! Going to see NIN and SG!

    ReplyDelete

  45. I went to one of the last New Edition shows before Bobby Brown quit the Tour. They did not disappoint, Bobby was even great!!

I felt like a kid again!! I did the whole if it isnt love dance right in the aisle and embarrassed my husband. One of the best night of my life!!

  46. I definitely go to more now that I live in Austin. I got to see New Order, the Cure and Depeche Mode last year and shelled out $$ for front row Morrissey tickets. Luckily that concert happened before he went off the rails again.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Saw Florence and the Machine last year and saw Sara Bareilles last night. Both were great shows. That Sara has a bit of a potty mouth. Not that I cared, just surprised me. (And probably a lot of parents who brought their kids.)

One a year would be more than I saw as a kid, since it was much rare then. Reason: I have better access to shows I want to see now.

  48. Not til Backstreet came back alright.

  49. A LOT fewer--I used to see shows in smaller clubs and take pictures a lot, and hit a few bigger shows when it was someone I really wanted to see. I remember seeing Peter Gabriel at the Omni (RIP) in Atlanta back in 1993 and thinking the tickets were outrageously priced at $30...well, it WAS outrageous for the time. Now I only go out if it's someone I already know and like, because between being brokeass and developing arthritis in my lower back/sciatica, I just can't afford to stand around for any length of time. I am, however, going to see my 27th NIN show next Tuesday in MA, and have an extra ticket that I'd like to sell, so if you're in the Boston area and don't mind sitting/standing w/me all night, drop me a line... (Oh, and 27 NIN shows is really not that many; I personally know people who would every/almost every show on a tour, and whose figures are in the triple digits. It's kind of like the Grateful Dead, but with more black and fewer drugs; while the shows are fun, it's getting to hang out w/all your fellow fans that really makes it special.)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I definitely went to more when I was younger, but I still go to shows all the time! At least once a month, I just saw Jack White and had my face melted! Bow down to that Rock God!

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Robin Before he moved from New Orleans, Trent Reznor used to let people use his home studio. According to my cousin who lived about 5 minutes away from him, all you had to do was prove that you didn't use drugs. I guess he realized what they were doing to him and it was his way of trying to make a difference. Not only would he let them use his studio, he would help them out with producing their sound and other stuff like that. I visited them a few times but I was never there when he was in town but I believe him since both my Uncle and Aunt verified it. Not my type of music but major respect for someone doing that to help kids, especially when he had the problem he was trying to keep them from developing.

  52. Oh, and at the KISS concert I'm taking my Dad to I got VIP Meet and Greet tickets which includes a 30 minute private acoustic show, autographs, etc... Gonna be legen...

    ...Dary! LEGENDARY!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Yes. A lot of bands from the 80s & 90s are in again & taking advantage of us being older with more disposable income & reliving our youth. Nothing will beat 3rd row Motley Crue in Las Vegas not even going to for their final tour. Vince Neil lets the crowd sing for him ever notice?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Just went to a 4 day music festival in Canada! I have to say though, I feel old. My hips hurt from trying to jump around with all those 20 somethings!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I just saw Modest Mouse on Sunday!

  56. Ugh, no. Hate the drama of tickets and getting into a concert space. Loud and obnoxious.

Living in Austin doesn't help. Everything's ACL now, and I am sure as HELL not going out there in high Central Texas summer in the Dillo Dirt to half-ass see folks and stand for hours, with no food that's easy to get and reasonable.

That said - did see India.Arie in Austin this year and last week...Queen + Adam Lambert in Houston.

That's likely my last for a few years.

  61. I actually go to more now because I have more money. Also, I was always working multiple jobs when I was younger and just didn't have time to stand in line at ticketmaster.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Big no. When I was in my mid 20's and worked for Sony I had a concert or gig to go to most nights of the week

    ReplyDelete
  63. I saw Jack Johnson a few weeks ago. Cost me $400 when all was said and done. I saw REM in 1991. Front row dead center. Cost me $75 and that was a fortune for me back then (college). That's why concerts are half-full or big acts have reverted to playing sheds or paired up with other headliners. Going to see NIN/Soundgarden in a few weeks, though. Can't pass that up but those tickets weren't cheap either.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I went to a lot of concerts in high school and college, but I still try to see those acts I really like. So far this summer I have seen Steve Poltz (San Diego staple), Joan Osborne and Eric Hutchinson. I have tickets to see
Marc Broussard, Colin Hay (lead singer of Men at Work) and Paul McCartney in the next 2 months.
