  8. Stop dressing up white models in American Indian headdresses!!!! Would Vera dress up those models like geishas? No, she wouldn't.

  9. Melissa's hair looks good there.

  10. Someone should have had the guts to tell Selena that high-waisted too-tight jeggings lead to camel toe.

    The More You Know....

  11. WTF Selena?!! Camel Toe anyone?
Also, did Susan Saradon get some work done to her face, she looks different

  13. I miss the 70's. high waists, cameltoes, braless. Bless Eva Amurri (Californication), Evan Rachael Wood (Mildred Pierce), and others going naked prior to pregnancies!

  15. Yes I am surprised that there hasn't been a outcry, protest and call for a boycott yet....

  16. High waisted pants were the rage when I was very very young, I see they are making a comeback, it makes sense, the plumber crack look couldn't go much lower though Bieber tried

  17. Vera Wang can dress her models up as any culture she wants. Your approval is not required. All culture is series of appropriations, big and small, significant and otherwise, from cultures that have come before.
It's not an insult. The assumption that dressing up as an American Indian is demeaning to American Indians is, however, insulting. To everyone. Stop.

  18. Agreed Ents. High waisted pants with cameltoe - deux faux pas... Not diggin the floppy hat on Selena either..

  19. If that Vera Wang is offensive to America Natives, I guess Tinie Tempah video "Lover not a fighter" is more offensive to Spaniards, celebrating Saint Patrick getting shitfaced is offensive to Potatoes and Catholics in general, doing the same on "cinco de mayo" is offensive to Mexicans (and all South Americans, because you yanks cannot tell them, or even European Spaniards and Italians apart).

    Whining dumbasses.

  20. Selena and Susan Sarandon both suffering from ill fitting clothes, and Susan needs a bra.

Does "high waisted" refer to actual high waist or what used to be normal, right under the belly button waist? I still wear those, I NEVER got into the low waist fad, I thought it looked horrible on just about every woman I ever saw wearing it. It really looked bad on me, and my waist actually curves inward.

    1. My family has wide hips and average waists coded into our DNA. My mom always consoled us that we'd be thankful when it came time for us to have children, but I skipped that part of life so my "birthing hips" serve no purpose but to annoy me. The low waist pants make me look huge because they accentuate the hip. I prefer pants that land at the real waist, and I keep trying to resist the change in fashion. I'd rather look dowdy than enormous.

    2. I had boyish hips and no butt (pre 2nd baby) and I loved low-waisted jeans. I'm top heavy (thanks Mom) and wearing low rise jeans evened out my figure. Unfortunately, I have too much muffin top now.

  21. It's camel toe day on CDAN. Enough, my eyes are burning.

  22. Vera Wang is Chinese, not Japanese, so the geisha comment is invalid. And she has done her take on the cheongsam, so yes, yes she would.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love Swoosie Kurtz. Love. Her.

Now I want to watch Slap Shot.

  24. I am Dakota. I actually grew up on a reservation & I find it incredible offensive.

    I suggest you read this:

    http://www.xojane.com/issues/as-a-dakota-i-am-shocked-that-any-american-handed-a-headress-would-wear-it

And no, the geisha comment is NOT invalid.

I suggest you take a course on American History.

  25. Daaaaannnnnggggggg... Vera is 65?!?!?! Asian don't crack either :)

  26. Camel Toe is the new nip slip/vag flash.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Vera wouldn't dress the models as geishas because to her that would be offensive is the point. So, yes in this case it is valid.

Thank you for that article link. Very well written.

American Indians would not go out them selves wearing the head dresses that they earned every feather of as a fashion statement.

  28. What's wrong with Indian headresses and dressing in old American Indian attire on Americans? I don't find it offensive at all. My grandmother was full blooded American Indian and I have family who live on the Maine reservations. I do not find any of that offensive, not even a little bit. I'm confused by how it's offensive actually. It's quite an attractive style. I personally love it. If she dressed someone as a geisha, that's also a beautiful style. It was considered beautiful not so long ago. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Now dressing up as a black face is completely different. That's making fun of human beings, not a dressing style. That is completely offensive.

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL, you just used an argument from the article in the link. "But, I'm part Native". Which really just so how little you understand of Native American History & why it's offensive.

    ReplyDelete
  30. High waist came back about 8 years ago as an aggressive counter strike against hipster jeans.

    ReplyDelete
  31. So there are 2 conflicting points, I'd love to know if you mind being called Indians. Isn't it considered kind of a joke that points to the stupidity of the invaders?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh and love Swoosie! "humberdink! Humperdinck! "

    ReplyDelete
  33. Selena's pants are terrible. I would never have recognized Thora Birch.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Use either American Indian or Native American. Don't use Indian, you may hear a group of American Indians/Native Americans use it, but it doesn't mean it's OK.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The only people I've ever heard use the term "Indian" in the past 20 years was an Anishanabe when he was joking about his singing language. "I'm singing Indian."

Using Native head dresses as fashion is incredibly offensive. Don't believe me? Put one on and drop by a reservation in South Dakota. You'll get educated real fast.

    ReplyDelete
  36. A wonderful lady of Native American ancestry (incl relatives living on a reservation) explained that she found people dressing up in the 'costumes', the term 'redskins' and being called 'American/Indians' offensive.

Not all will be offended but enough will be. Surely the safest way, if you're not Native American yourself, is don't use these terms & don't treat their heritage as inspiration for fancy dress.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fashion uses many cultural references. If they're meant to show the styles of dress as beautiful, inspirational and influential, I don't find it offensive.

Is fashion based on flamenco's ruffled skirts offensive? How about African tribal prints? Lederhosen? Hawaiian shirts? Nehru collars? Keffiyeh? Is it ALL offensive? Should everybody just wear baggy gray Mao suits or would that be offensive to the Chinese?

If it's done to demean or humiliate, of course it's offensive. Otherwise, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery so lighten up.

  38. Ouch - Selena's pants make my vag ache.

LMAO..almost spat my coffee out at the Swoosie Kurtz comment..lol

I don't know what virgin's blood Susan Sarandon and Sharon Stone are drinking to look that good, but I'd like their names and phone numbers.

  39. Fashion, like music is derivative. And people need to accept that. However there are exceptions, when that culture find it offensive, it is. But that seems to me to happen in extreme cases. I see a lot of at the moment regarding Iggy Azalea etc where she's seen to be appropriating and ENTIRE culture.

It seems to me that the tone is very important. The way that culture is used.

Ok. Scrolling down and I seriously thought Sharon stone was one I the fanning girls. Go look.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm only trying to point out that bringing up Japanese geishas in reference to a Chinese woman is invalid. Cultural sensitivity, if that's what you're trying to stress, should apply to all, not just to one.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Let's end this debate on cultural appropriation, it is exhausting defending my traditions and culture, if you agree its a fashion statement wear one and walk into a rez, be brave, be bold, be fashion forward, I am a Kookum and dam I'd pay to see that happen.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Selena needs a Cuchini to hide that camel toe - as seen on World's Dumbest.

Susan S. and Eva look gorgeous - those women got good genes!

Swoozie's wrinkle front dress makes me think those are wrinkles under the dress (I wouldn't wear it). That raggedy hair/wig isn't helping out either. I loved her as the crazy church mom in Bubble Boy.

Melissa looks great with bangs. She reminds me of Ann Wilson of Heart

  44. Swoozie Kurtz (named after a famous WWII plain) is the same age as my mother and will be 70 in September, as will Michael Douglas. Stockard Channing and Diana Ross. And I know all this because my mother points out all the celebs her age.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Jessica Larson...I'm sorry. But I think you're just looking at an excuse to be offended. I'm still waiting for your argument as to why you're offended. Like I said, I'm part Indian, and I don't find it even remotely offensive. It's just an excuse on your part.
