RIP, James. He was from Norman, Oklahoma, and a friend of mine tells hilarious stories about Charles Bumgarner, his brother, who was the principal of her high school. Think that was in Slaughter Creek, OK (?).
Such a commanding but a relatable onscreen personality. One of the first actors, along with Mary Tyler Moore, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, and Goldie Hawn, to make the successful crossover from TV to films, and then back again (even though he started off doing a mix of both). He paved the way for Tom Selleck, Mark Harmon, even George Clooney on ER, I'd say. Of course, younger generations only know him for The Notebook, and maybe, just maybe Space Cowboys, but he's had one of the most prolific television careers of all time.
Will watch out of respect this evening. Frist good video posted here in months!

ReplyDeleteI don't know whether I'm amused or disturbed by the multiple use of "slaughter" in naming towns in the US.
