  9. 18 months old. In emergency room with a high fever. My heart stopped. My memory was watching from the ceiling down to my mom crying and screaming and my body was in a tin bathtub filled with ice to cool down my body. Obviously something changed and almost 50 years later I am just fine. My mom never told the story and I thought it was just a dream that I always remembered. I must have been about 10 when I told that story and my mom was around and freaked out how I knew what happened.

  13. I just wrote a long vignette that was pretty amusing. Then blogger fucking ate it. Now I just don't care.

But long story short my brothers were dumbasses when we were kids.

  16. I have a few, but here is one: i am atanding with my mother outside, and we are talking to a lady wheeling a carriage with a baby in it. I guess i was 3 or 4. Anyway, i must have been staring at tge baby because suddenly the woman was saying " You were once a baby too! I remember you as a baby!" And my mind just exploding with the epiphany that i was once a baby! Blew my mind!

  18. Karen, mine is similar to yours. I remember my baby brother coming home from the hospital when I was 21 months old. I remember my grandmother bending over his crib looking at him.

  19. Being at the movie theatre with my parents to see Cinderella and Dad having to leave early because my little sister wouldn't stop crying. Deeter was a baby, so I was four.

  21. Standing in the crib as a toddler asking to be let out by my grandmother. She just walked up to the crib and pulled up the railing & walked away. I remember being very mad bc my parents never did that and usually left it down since I wasn't a climber.

  22. Walking in the dark with my father to take the trash out to the bins. They were at the side of the garage at the other side of the backyard. I was about 2.

  24. standing in my crib. my parents were going out and i had a sitter. i had grape juice in a baby bottle. i was crying and shaking the bars on the crib and somehow managed to fall out. my parents had to come right home. i confirmed that this really happened with my mother, and she said i was about 15 months old at the time.

  25. Screaming for my Daddy while my mother said he was just moving the car. They got divorced around that time so obviously I knew something was wrong. I was around 3.

  26. I remember being in a playpen and lifting up my arms to get out. My mother's husband...Long, long, story, picked me up and gave me a ride on his shoulders. I got scared because he was very tall and I felt like I was really high off the ground. I was probably 18-24 months old.

  27. I always thought this was a dream and I told my mother and she said there was no way I could remember this.

In my remembering of the incident when I was about 4, I can see my mother running into the room because the crib was moving. (I thought the house was shaking for some reason.)

BUT the story was that at the age of 6 months I somehow got all tangled in the sheets on the crib and trapped between the bars. My mother ran in to untangle me.

I also remember being potty trained at 14 months.

Can't remember now what I had for breakfast yesterday.

  28. I was maybe 15 months old and in the back seat of my aunt and uncle's car it had leather seats and they must have picked me up because my mother had gone into labour with my brother so I guess the plan was I would stay with my aunt and uncle - I had an ice cream cone, they must have stopped off somewhere, hope I hadn't been bawling quite likely and it must have been my first ice cream cone so I can see it clearly in my head. I probably made a mess and my OCD aunt and uncle freaked out but nicely.

  31. I remember sitting in the front room by the side of the couch looking out the front window at the trees. It was windy and they were waving at me. I sang a long song to them but it didn't have any words. I had my bottle in my mouth the whole time. That's just one thing I remember from before I could talk.

  33. Sadly, having my Mom take my picture while one of the guys at a party my Dad was having held me. The guy was in town working at Ft. Chaffee during the time when the Vietnamese Refugees had been sent there. The same guy a few years later murdered the greatest songwriter of the era. Yeah, I was held as a baby by Mark David Chapman. I still have the picture. I hate it and am fascinated by it at the same time.

Not a great first memory, huh?

I was three. I was trying to go to sleep chewing bubble gum. My father came and and said to me "do you feel the side of your head (temple) moving when you chew that gum?"

    I said "yeah".

He then told me that my head would expand to the size of a watermelon if i didn't spit my gum out. I paused then spit it into his hand. That SERIOUSLY is my earliest memory. I remember this because he died when I was four. so every memory with him in it (there are like 4) had to be before then.

  35. Must be from way back when I was around 5 years young. I was running alongside the swimming pool and jumping into the pool. Back then I was under the impression, as if I were flying. Still my favourite childhood memory.

  36. Three years old, going down the slide in pre-school when my mom was in grad school. It was a good pre-school. Back in the day when, y'know, they actually taught you in school. Carnivation Pre-School, down by the University Village Mall, if I remember correctly. They were quite good.

The thing about the slide that haunts me is that, years later, when I was a camp counselor in college, and I had aegis over a playground of 40+ kids...I was such a hawk about keeping the kids safe, and I just looked away for a second. Literally, a second. One of my kids got to the top of the slide and tried to run down the slide. One of the old metal slides, right? Brains himself out with a very serious concussion just as my due diligence scan comes back around to watch the slide. And then ensued interviews with the insurance carrier of the summer school and assorted shit, none of which I cared about other than that I'd looked away for just a split-second too long.

I hate slides. My earliest memory is of a very fun run down a slide, but my kids have never understood why Daddy is so virulently and militantly anal about slides.

  40. I was about 4. This was back in the day of cloth diapers. I remember I was carrying a fresh one to my mom for my sister. Either that or getting a big wheel for my bday at around that age

  41. My parents were having a party and I got out of my crib to get them, after having a nightmare. I was wearing my blue footie pj's and wildly staring at all the strangers faces as they "awww'ed and tried to grab me. I remember sweating and my hair sticking to me as I dragged my blankie while sobbing about the "Bear inmy close it"
    I think I was two.
The next night I was sobbing again. My mom was mad at the bear and I said "No, He gone!!" and cried my eyes out.
Earlier that day, my oldest brother told me ( under mom's orders, I found out later) that the bear in my closet was a good bear and that he was there to protect me. Funny thing? I don't remember that part, at all.
What I remember? The bear telling me Goodbye, that he had to get back to his family. I remember begging him to "Don't GO!!" but he got in his space ship and flew away...and mom coming in while I cried as my heart broke.
    Well, Never trust a bear.
It's a hard lesson but I learned it early...

  42. It's either sitting in the stroller in line at the bank with Mom or the tantrum I had as Mom dismantled my crib in an attempt to force me to sleep in the big girl bed. I had no concept of time so I don't know which came first.
