Rik Mayall Has Died

Comedian and actor Rik Mayall died this morning. Mayall was best known for his roles in Bottom, the Young Ones and The New Statesman. He was 56. The Young Ones remains one of my favorite shows of all-time.

  2. I've said it in a previous post but he and his contemporaries defined UK comedy in the 80s. He will be missed.

    1. @Dingle, more like since Enty steals all his blinds from the Daily Mail, it would only be proper to give the Brits a shout out...;-)

    2. Enty wishes Dingle.

  10. Oooooooo, Violet has some serious pull with Enty. And then look at that sassy comeback to Dingle. Our little ginger Brit is all fired up today.

  11. So sad. Rik never really recovered from the quad bike accident.

My fave character of his was Alain B'stard, the New Statesman.

  14. Too young.

I credit The Young Ones (and MTV for airing it) for introducing this small-town American to British humor.

  18. I just now ordered "The Young Ones" from my library, as I only know him from "Blackadder." I needed a good classic new-to-me British comedy anyway. :-(

    1. Also try and find 'Bottom' his show with Ade Edmonson....it was like Rik and Vyvyan from The Young Ones grown up.
I never really watched The New Statesman but I've heard it's great too.

  22. We would sit around (smoking hash) and watching The Young Ones, Bennie Hill, Monty Python and Dr. Who (Tom Baker!). In the very early 80's there was quite a bit of British TV available in the states. There was nothing like it at the time and quite frankly there's been nothing like it since (nothing like that hash either). RIP Rik.

  23. Death 'not suspicious' say police. Very sudden. His wife found him this morning. Dreadful for her and children.

  25. He introduced me to some great humor that no one in my house understood in the 80s. Thank you MTV for bringing me The Young Ones and Rik.

  29. I was about 15 when my friends and and I used to sit around laughing at him and the anarchic humour of The Young Ones.

  30. The Young Ones were the best ever!!!
There was always a weird "blip" on the screen-every episode. If you slowed the VHS tape down, you would see that a random picture had been inserted.
    Every one.

    RIP

  32. Ohhhh I so many sads about this.....The Young Ones defined my teen years and I saved up all my money to see him live with Ben Elton in 1986. Such a genius....

  33. Enty, how could you not mention "Drop Dead Fred"?? It came out when I was about 10 and everybody I knew around my age *loved* it.

Sometimes when I'm annoyed at someone I still think of Drop Dead Fred's solution for Lizzie's ex-boyfriend. "I know! We'll harpoon him through the head!" LOL.

  35. It's like a piece of my rebellious teenager has gone. So sad.
The young ones was on at 11.30pm! You had to be REALLY HARD to stay up & watch it. Or wasted. (Not so much at 14!)
