Off Topic

I'm really good at learning new languages for about a day, maybe two.

  1. I knew French Spanish and Pig Latin not to mention Spanglish and English and Ebonics when I was younger and wanted people to like me better.

    1. Well look at you! You can always fall back on those skills in hard times!! Reminds me of Mrs Brady translating jive in the Airplane movie!

  2. I took French for 4 years then switched to Japanese because I wanted a challenge.

    1. Ok really I just wanted to understand why anyone would create tentacle porn. 6 years of study and I am still no closer to understanding. I mean bukkake is at least about control and power dominance, but my cultural anthropology studies provide no insight into the prevalence of tentacles.

    2. I never got it either but I always assumed it had something to do with being an island nation and having so much dependence on the ocean, like The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife.

    3. Didn't know about tentacle porn. Looks like I've got a new hobby.

    4. @Harry I hope it's included in my obit that I introduced someone to the concept of tentacle porn lol

    5. Riven, this tentacle porn is insane! Fucking Japan, they really do some weird shit over there! Years ago I had one of the Japanese channels on my cable package and I would just sit there for hours in a cloud of cannabis smoke watching these totally undecipherable game shows full of naked girls doing things with brooms and bicycles. It was great.

    6. @Harry I recommend Happiness of the Katakuris for some A-grade Japanese WTF-ness. I focused on Japanese horror films for my thesis paper and had to watch about 200 films of some really crazy shit. If you ever want a recommendation I can give it lol.

  3. I'm terrible at it.

  4. I got an O'level in Latin back in the day. I can recite verbatim (see what i did there?) the English translation of The Ilead. Useful.

  6. I am great with languages until I meet a native speaker then I get intimidated and will not say a word, lol. Then there are times I will mix up my Spanish with my Portuguese or Italian

    1. I just apologize profusely for destroying their language while trying to speak it. Like its rude to not try to learn the language but I feel like I'm disrespecting it more by trying to speak it. Can't win.

  7. OT, I'm spending this week at home instead of my vacay. One of my wolfhounds developed epilepsy last Thursday. So I'm spending my time monitoring her and posting with ya'll.

    1. I'm so sorry to hear that, Cleo! How is she doing?

    2. So far, really good. I let her play with the other Borzoi yesterday. She's back to bullying her brother Ilya.

    3. Sorry, Cleo. Hope your pup gets better.

    4. I've had several dogs with epilepsy, Cleo (1 mixed breed and 2 Italian Greyhounds) and I've had 2 other IGs that had occasional seizures but not frequently enough to be medicated.
The epileptic pups all responded very well to phenobarb. Only side effect was weight gain.
      Best wishes to your hound!

  8. Aw, Cleo, I'm sorry. :( Is it treatable?

    1. Symptoms, yes. Vet put her on phenobarbital with testing to check her blood for "therapeutic" levels. Of course my brain was thinking, she probably wants to make sure it's not going to human use. Thankfully Czarya has been seizure free since Friday morning (Fingers crossed).

  10. @Riven. I was going to study Classics at Oxford. And then I realised I was thick. Better to spend my brain power perusing gossip sites instead.

    @Cleo - hope your dog's ok. I love wolfhounds.

  11. I grew-up in the San Joaquin Valley, so I know some Spanish words, but forming coherent sentences beyond "mi hermana es loco," forget it. I can barely manage English somedays.

    2. @Seven. It's a highly overrated skill, anyway. I find growling menacingly usually makes most people go away and them you don't have to speak to them.

  12. I've always wanted to learn Italian. I blame Maeve Binchy

  15. Tentacle porn is because in Japan, penises cannot be displayed. In order to avoid censorship, they invented squid shaped aliens which made love to the girls.

I don't speak any language at all correctly, as you can read.

    1. @Penisusernamethingy This! Thanks so much, I can't believe I forgot about Japan's nudity restrictions for peen. It's kind of amusing that Takashi Miike can shows the most horrid shit like a man birthing a fully formed adult but hide yo peen, hide yo balls.

  17. Cleo hope your dog gets better. Scary to see a large dog seize no doubt.

I try at French. It's pretty shitty.

  18. Took French in high school. German in college. German was better, although not by much.

    2. It counts with me, BeckyMae. Can I impose on you to list "fuck off" and "asshole" in as many languages as you can?

  21. I'm jealous of your mad swearing skills, BeckyMae!

I'd like to learn Finnish. I love Finland.
And German so I could understand Rammstein. That's a good reason, right?

  22. "Older" Island girl, has been taking Exams this week. She's in elementary school. Her final, for language, is a 3 day final..poor thing has one day of questions, one day of essay writing and one day of "conversation". I'm amazed at what she has learned. Love her school, worth every penny. Figured a would say something nice about learning a language in school, since I took 4 years and could tell you nothing. She's going to try to use it when she goes to volunteer. Makes me smile. Thank a teacher when they do a good job!!

  23. @lowkey Finland is awesome! I went a couple of years ago and it was a crazy place, everyone looks a bit like an elf and the language is indecipherable!

@Harry I'll make it my mission to learn that in all the countries I go to in Europe this trip! I already know it in Greek: agamisou

  24. That's just the 'fuck off' part...usually followed by 'mallaca' which means wanker.....it got me into a bit of trouble in my youth when I lived on the Greek Islands for a while ;)
