What is the one thing you wish you could buy that is not sold any longer?

    1. Just get them sent from Europe. They're a dime a dozen here. eBay is calling.

      Delete
    2. But @nutty, they're actually illegal here bc we Americans are such fat pigs and will put anything in our mouths, even the small plastic toys inside :( I'd ask someone to bring me one back next week but I'd be angry if it got confiscated. I've heard of people sneaking them in but I feel safer asking for a simple gazetta dello sport :)

    3. @kat -- for awhile I ordered them from a Canadian site, but I heard too many stories about them being confiscated by customs. I wish I could buy them, too :-(. For now I just buy some when I visit Vancouver or London. Stupid FDA laws.

  10. Lots of cosmetics. There's a great MUDD clay masque they stopped making, and zillions of people were looking for it on eBay. So annoying. I think the company went broke, because the product was certainly popular. Bvlgari Green Tea Shampoo and conditioner is another great product that seems to have disappeared. Maybe they figured out they could make more money selling jewelery.

  13. Humming Bird flossers. Had I known that they'd stop production I would have stocked up on a life time supply.

Re: KinderEggs, Customs will confiscate them. It's harder to smuggle in a KinderEgg than it is drugs. So, we plan to find them in Canada, and eat the chocolate and save the toys before we cross back into the states. Hope it's not too late after Easter. (Although I have heard that Seattle has a black market of sorts)

Also, Wella had this hair product called Liquid hair. It was a yellow liquid. That stuff worked miracles. You'd spray it on and it would get rid of frizz, make your hair smooth and shiny.

  43. OV splits! They stay icy cold all the way to the bottom.

Hey Canadians, do you still sell OV splits in CanadaLand?

Must add this on my List of Things To Do:

    1. Free The Egg in my belly (must remember not to choke on toy as American's are stupid like that)

    2. Ice cold OV splits in my belly (smuggle a shit metric ton into the states - Canadian jail has got to be better than Holiday Inn and I bet they serve OV splits at every meal)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Bubble O' Bill ice cream

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't get the KinderEgg love. We've gone through a metric tonne with three wee kiddos, the toys always fall apart and get lost or they are lame. Not that awesome. The chocolate is all right, but I wouldn't mule for them, you.know?

On the other side, you can't get baby walkers here in Canada. The ones where they are on wheels and the baby's feet propel them along. Apparently we let too many kiddos fall down too many stairs? I don't know, that seems like more of a parenting issue than the basis for getting rid of an awesome tool to help wee ones walk, but who knows. They also get confiscated at Customs, that's what made me think of it

  55. Oh, God, where do you want to start...there's a whole bunch of cosmetics that I miss from mainly the '70s--Body on Tap, GYHST (supposedly the VCS repro isn't very good), Earth Born, Sunshine Harvest (there was an apricot version that smelled FABULOUS), and the original Herbal Essence shampoo (none of the successors have been anywhere near as good as the first one), and that's just shampoos we're talking about here!

    1. @Robin As I was scrolling thru thinking about hair products, I thought of the originial Herbal Essence shampoo. It was the first hair product my mom let me buy just myself.

That stuff smelled Soooo good. And no, none of their product smell anything like the originial.

  56. I just spent $60 online buying Chick-O-Sticks and my dad is going to be very pleased this Fathers Day. Thank you everyone who informed me my delicious favorite childhood treat is still being made! It's a good thing my building at work is virtually empty because I squealed pretty loudly when I saw the links.

    ReplyDelete
  57. @DingleBarry - I never heard of OV Splits - had to Google.

@TTM - I'm so with you on the KinderEggs - I just don't get it. Is it because there's a toy inside, cause the chocolate doesn't hold a candle to Godiva.

There was a John Frieda hair product called Beach Blonde Ocean Waves spray, which was terrific, but was discontinued. Someone is selling it on eBay for $75 - no thanks.

Has anyone ever had Cherry Wine? I *think* it's exclusive to N.C. Wish they sold it here.

    1. It's the wanting what you can't have, Surfer & TTM. They were fun things for stocking stuffers.

Are you talking actual cherry wine? In northern Michigan, there are a lot of vineyards on the Leelanau peninsula. Many cherry trees there as well. I believe they ship to Canada.

    2. Surfer - other companies make one, but I found a recipe to make my own - the only thing it lacks is the great smell :)

    3. @surfer You mean Cheerwine soda! I thought I was the only one who drank it. It's made in Salisbury, NC but you can have it shipped, I think.

I discovered it in college & then afterwards, I'd go back to NC each year & buy a case & slowly dole it out.

Just moved to a place where they sell it! Woo-hooo!!!! Local deli delivers it when we order from them. Still tastes Dee-lish!

30 years later, I'm back in Cheerwine heaven! :-D

    4. @surfer There's a website, cheerwinefinder.com (still don't know how to make a clicky) that may help. I can't stand the stuff myself, and it stains like a mofo.

Actually, I miss the V-neck, kind-of-chunky knit sweaters they had in all colors at The Limited in the 80's. It was my white sweater that got stained with an unholy mix of vodka and Cheerwine....

  66. Surfer - There's also a soda called Cheerwine that's from the NC-ish region. You can order it online, me thinks.

  75. @Citizen My Dad worked at Planters for 20 years. Every Thursday and Friday they had a "store" open for the employees to buy stuff at just cost. I loved getting the list on Monday from him and filling out what I wanted (I always got the huge 2 foot long Sugar Daddy on a stick- 50 cents lol) Not a week went by we didn't get Cheez balls and Cheez Curls, there was a limit of 4 cans each but the 8 cans in total cost less than $2 total. I also used to let teachers order and they paid 2X the price since it was still cheap for them and I made a bit of spending money.

On topic: I wish they still made Sega Dreamcasts, probably the best video game system ever. If they had put the DVD Drive in it like they originally wanted to, the PS2 wouldn't have sold like it did. Plus, there is not a better console for playing emulators. You can pretty much play any game from any system pre Xbox and PS2 with a Dreamcast and a CD burner.

  111. Monica's Magic Salad Dressing - made by a woman in Houston - a nonfat, near zero calorie salad dressing that was fabulous. The woman dies and her family closed up her business. That stuff was seriously good.

  112. I was about to tell Surfer about Cheerwine but apparently others know about it. Warning: Not as good as you remember it. I drank some once when I went back home and it was so dreadfully sweet I couldn't finish the can.

    I miss quaaludes.

They still make Planter's Cheez Balls don't they? OMG!!! I wondered why all we get are knock off brands..Someone still makes them it's just not Planters.

I also see they discontinued Schnapple Mint Tea.Loved that. I suspect my favorite gum, Trident in Arctic is being phased out too because I can never find that.

  115. Mostly I want things I can't get in Australia that exist elsewhere.....

Trader Joes Mini Peanut Butter Cups (crap all over that Reese's grainy shit)
Jalapeño and Cheddar Cheetos (still have a third if a bag that I bought in SIN in February that are stale as fuck, but I'll still eat 'em!)
Those Marks and Spencer Percy Pigs sweets....I think there's crack in them....ten at a time is never enough!
Galaxy Caramel Chocolate (can get here but it's expensive...)

Luckily I'll be in the UK in a few weeks to satisfy the last two cravings!!

  116. @Dallas It's not? It looked just like it. That's too bad.

I don't drink a lot of soda anymore, but I think about Diet Mt. Dew Code Red every now and again. I wish they hadn't stopped selling it.

  117. I love the way we're able to help each other out.

:) Sherry! Cherrywine was obviously quite popular. I'm thinking, if I can't get my hands on it, I'll try cherry syrup and Club Soda. It won't be the same, but...in the past, I've added Grenadine to Club Soda. Cherry looking, but not tasting. Ohs well.

I see Cheez Balls everywhere, but but not sure if they're Planters. I will definitely check it out.

  118. Altoids gum. :(

One thing that, as BeckyMae said, exists elsewhere in the world but is a pain to get here is HP Sauce. I love HP Sauce! Our local grocery carries it, but it's the kind made in the U.S. You can get it off of Amazon, but it's hit or miss.

  122. Longtime lurker!

John Freida Beach Blonde - the entire line was amazing and I have spent a small fortune trying to find a wave spray that I like as well and have had no luck. The scent was just to dieeeee for.

    2. Hi Sophie! I sent surfer the recipe for the beach spray I use, but you're right it doesn't smell quite as divine as the John frieda - my email is in my profile - send me a note and I'll send you the recipe - blogger wont let me paste for some reason! :)

  130. Kat - no, not the Terra brand blue potato chips (although I would take those either, but I can't find them in regular grocery stores anymore either) - Trader Joes had their own Blue chips.

Also, I miss Wise Garlic and Onion potato chips - Wise aren't carried on the West Coast. I occasionally find them at Big Lots but not as often as I'd like!

  136. The lust for the beach hair line from John Freida is making me laugh because I had to write a whole promo article for it when it debuted back when I was a go-getter reporter. The event took place on the Wildwood Boardwalk. If you're from Jersey you will understand the cheesiness of it all. But the products did seem great.

OK. Well, I miss my Gourmet Magazine, damn it. I know it's high-falutin and hoity-toity, but I loved that shit. If you can have your Trader Joe's - which is douchebag central in my book - I can have my Gourmet.

I also have a hankering for Berry Berry Kix and can never find them anywhere.

Uncle Ben's made a great rice pilaf when I first got married. Now, nowhere to be found.

And, I truly mourn the loss of many fab restaurants that have ceased and desisted in Philadelphia: Brasserie Perrier and Deux Cheminees, RIP.

  141. So glad to be asked this! It made me search the only fragrance I care to wear and just found it's available online! I used to buy my gorgeous cheapie fragrance Alia at Sears Canada and they told me it was discontinued and I believed it. Made in Italy and available for purchase and still pretty cheap! Thrilled!

  143. Jeez, too many things to count, or remember! The original Vidal Sassoon shampoo & the conditioning rinse, the ones in the brown bottles, from the '80's, best stuff ever. Ye Olde Pizza Joynt pizza, in Hayward/San Lorenzo, CA. Apparently it burned down, and they didn't re-build (I don't live there anymore, but it's truly tragic). Reds Tamales! Any food from El Taco, in San Leandro, CA (they closed, again, I don't live there but it'd be worth the drive). The California Coolers, wine coolers that Bartles and Jaymes bought the company out for in the late '80's, and RUINED. Taco Bell's "Bell Burgers", Jack in the Box's burritos (that were actually chimichangas), and McDonald's Cherry pies (sometimes you can find them, very randomly. They're WAY better than apple, IMHO). And, Urban Decay's white powder eyeshadow that has the glitter in it, can't remember the name, but it's the best for concerts and other trashy nights out! (Sometimes, a girl wants her eyes to sparkle, especially if they're dark brown eyes!) :D

  144. ....and "Frankincense and Myrhh" cologne from Jovan! It was out in the mid-late '70's, and was the best smelling perfume EVER!!! Oh, and shoes with wooden heels, instead of rubber that looks like wood.
