Steve Perry Performs For First Time In 19 Years
If you were in St. Paul, MN this weekend and saw Eels in concert then you were treated to something very special. For the first time in 19 years, former Journey lead singer, Steve Perry jumped on stage and performed during Eels' encore. It would be great to see Steve go on tour or play a few shows. There is no way he will ever reunite with Journey, no matter the paycheck because there is no friendship there at all. Maybe he would do something with Randy Jackson. Maybe.

um There is a Lord-Hallelujah?
What a voice….loved them together and him alone
Someone tell me "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" is on it!
True love won't desert you
Faithfully
Open Arms
such a talent
I sound just like Steve Perry in the shower.... Oooo, and in my car.
Steve should open for the new Journey
True:
My brother bought a hearse in the 80's when he was a jr in HS (only car he could afford..weird that it was even available) Customized the plate to Anytime
Huge Journey fan
#JourneyBlows
Derek, I quite seriously wandered the streets of Toronto singing "you make me weeeeaaaak, I wanna DIE!" for the whole time I was there. Drove my sister nuts.
Skynyrd!
TTM.. that's my favorite J song! Love the lyrics.
Due to your preference for talentless whores, I'll excuse this blasphemy.
He sounded great. I heard he's working on a solo album. Fingers crossed he will do at least a few dates to support it. I LURVE Steve Perry!!!!!!!
So great to see and hear him. What a voice! It's been sad to see Journey going around like a tribute band with a sound-alike singer. There's only one Steve Perry. Hoping they can perhaps put aside their differences and get it together for another tour.
I saw Def Leppard a few years ago and "Journey" was performing as well. Their Filipino Perry was sick or something and they had some other dude singing. It gave me sads x a billiondy. Def Leppard, on the other hand, was fantastic.
He is one of a kind, God he sounds great.
Me too, Evie, I just wish I could sing them in a way where it didn't hurt everyone's ears!
I read that a few years ago, Steve needed a hip replacement. The band wanted him to do it so he could go on your with them but Steve is afraid of surgery and is trying every alternative he can think of to avoid it. Journey is saying that Steve is being lazy and using that as an excuse not to get back with them and some think he's flat out lying.
Crazy good. I've always wondered what exactly made him just call it a day. And then how random is it to just randomly sing in Min St Paul?
There's a story here we will probably never know
Count - Journey does suck, but Steve Perry IS FUCKING AWESOME.
I was squealing like a school girl when I saw this.
Journey songs performed on this video:
Open Arms
Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'
Steve Perry has the most beautiful voice ever in rock n roll.
I meant Journey in its current state, obviously.
I just wish he'd done Worlds Apart. That would've made my LIFE.
Looks great, sounds great!!!!! Welcome back!
That sounds like something Neil Schon would say...
I went to see "Journey" with a bunch of people back on 2008. Cheap Trick and Heart were also playing, it was a fun show. I loved original Journey, have to say the fake Steve Perry wasn't too bad.
Whenever they played Steve Perry-era songs, people were going crazy, but when they played new stuff, **crickets**. I've never seen a crowd go from jumping up and down, singing, dancing, to.... nothing.
Hard to believe he's the same age as my mother. ;-) I went to high school for the last couple years in Hanford, CA, where Steve is from. He was always the big celebrity "sighting" in town. There was always someone who's older brother saw Steve at the bowling alley over the weekend.
I never did. But then, I think I was only at the bowling alley twice the whole time I lived there.
Wow, wow, wow. I was somehow under the impression that he was unable to perform like he used to, that he had damaged his voice. I haven't gotten to watch the video yet, but from the comments here, it sounds like that is not true.
ALL HAIL STEVE PERRY
It's hard to believe that it's been 32(?) years since I saw him perform with Journey. I believe I saw Queen that year, too. It's too bad we can't get a Freddie Mercury comeback, as well. That would have been an awesome double bill.
I couldn't stand Journey back in the day. I hated hair bands too. Then the century turned and all these talentless fuckers started getting played on all sorts of radio station formats and I reassessed. Journey and Steve should do a kumbaya and tour. Even fake Journey is better then 90% of the shit out there now.
It's interesting how many of these late 70s and 80s bands have had falling outs with their lead singers. Journey and Steve Perry, Foreigner and Lou Gramm, Styx and Dennis DeYoung etc.
I have no feelings toward Journey or Steve Perry either way but he and Dennis DeYoung should tour.
Whiny little....
Ahh Journey.. They are just as divaish as Van Halen, but quieter.
Love Steve's solo work, I also really liked Lou Gramm's solo work. Both such iconic voices for people my age.
I heard Steve left due to his mother being ill.
My husband calls tours of older bands the Broken Back tours..
We're broke and we're back..
I had the same experience when we went to a journey, foreigner, and night ranger show. I was actually more impressed by night ranger (sister Christian is the song) and foreigner than with journey. I don't like that lead singer and Neal is a db.
JoElla, love Lou Gramm's voice, his solo work was terrific.
I love Lou Gramm and his work in Foreigner and solo. I am not sure how many people know this, but he went through a serious health issue with a benign brain tumor and as a result of surgery, his voice no longer sounds like it used to. I follow him on Twitter and he once responded to a message I sent him and I almost shrieked like a school girl when I got it.
Lou Gramm
LOVE Lou Gramm, JoElla! Midnight Blue!
Saw this first thing this morning......made. my. day. Love Steve. Saw Journey in 1983, third time, front row center. Best concert I've ever been to.
Hope he tours.
I work with someone who saw that show in San Diego and he said people left during Journey.
I miss the long hair and tight pants. Journey's Greatest Hits is always my go to CD. Their Behind the Music was interesting. While I do love him, Steve is a strange one. I thought he was living in Del Mar? I think the breakup was all about ego as most are. I can't imagine him getting back with the band, but stranger things have happened.
You're not even allowed to say the J-word in front of Steve.
Umm where's 'Don't Stop Believin'!? Wasn't brave enough to belt that one out huh? :(
I went to Fake Journey with some friends a couple of summers ago.
Had drinks and then had a hissy fit middle of concert.
Couldn't stand it had to leave. My friends were like becki you're drunk stop being so critical. After watching this I feel vindicated!
I'd love to see him back but as always felt the new Journey ain't the old Journey but, gotta say, he waited too long. It's clear he can't belt it like he used to & the substitute dude can. Why do these people wait so long, like Axl out in the Golden Gods awards- he sounded ok, but they wait past their prime and then go out.
Steve Perry is universal...Faithfully! <3
I do have to give a **side-eye** and admit that Journey is overplayed in karaoke bars! Hell any bar.
Such an incredible voice. A gift from God right there.
@Dude, I'm reminded of Eddie & The Cruisers.
NJFF, :-D
OMG...I've got chills! Thank you1
Actually Steve Perry did have hip surgery. Neal wanted him to wait to have it til after they did another tour but Steve was in to much pain and said no.
So Neil and the band made the decision to get a new singer and do the tour without him and that is when Steve Perry said screw it and quit period.
Oh thank you @lisa! That really sucks for Steve :( but I can only imagine what a nut job Neal Schone is since he's been with Ms Salahi the White House crasher
I saw this last night! Wow! I had read that he had vocal problems and could no longer sing. He also has an adult daughter that he never talks about.
Love Steve Perry and Lou Graham. The fake Journey should just quit.
thanks for this Enty. He did great for not being around for so long.
Hello Steve Perry.
Like @ Topper it's been 32 years. Precisely. As of today.
We wore mini dresses and people asked if we were really "punk." We spilled vodka-la ed Slurprees ony he gearshift of my father's truck.
They were supported by the Greg Kihn band. The Breakup Song. Ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah.
I played Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' on an endless loop from the Orange Peel record player in my bedroom.
It's the details that make a memory...
Steve Perry should get together with Greg Rolie, Journey's first singer and tour as a band. Rolie also played keyboards, and when Perry joined they split the vocals, and together they sounded so great, ("Just the Same Way", for example). Rolie quit in the early '80's I believe, so they probably have some Journey beefs in common!
