Parents Of Virgin Killer Tried To Stop Him

CNN is reporting that Hunger Games assistant director Peter Rodger and his wife received a 140 page manifesto from their son and immediately tried to find him and stop him from carrying out his plan to kill people. The parents had previously called police about their 22 year old son Elliot Rodger, and police investigated, but did not take any action because they had not seen the YouTube videos that Elliot had made. I don't understand that part. They called the police because of the videos he posted, but the police never looked at the actual videos before determining nothing could be done?

After the couple received the manifesto they drove from LA to Santa Barbara but heard about the shootings on the radio as they were driving. Their son killed six people before killing himself and leaving 13 people injured.

  3. You would think, when they get a call from parents who were that concerned, that the cops might at least have taken the trouble to look at the videos. And it can't have been easy for the parents to make that call. In fact, most probably wouldn't have.

At the same time, though, I can't help wondering just how much of this senseless atrocity happened because the shooter was mentally ill (and could still legally purchase all the firearms and ammo he wanted to), and how much of it happened because he was apparently raised to be a self-entitled prick who thought that pretty girls "owed" him sex or a relationship or whatever.

It would seem that there's enough blame this time to cover a whole swathe of people.

    In so many ways.
And yesterday in the radio the reporter opened this report by saying, "the Santa Barbara community has begun tbe mourning process." That really got me! Less than 48 hours later they'd begun the mourning process?? HAAAAA! They're friggen still in shock and prob still shaking. And that man had no right owning guns!!

My niece just graduated from UCSB and she works for the university now. This is too close to home and it's very painful. Too many communities have had to endure this shit and something needs to change so these imbisols can't take lives with their selfish whims.

  7. Adam Lanza, Seung Hui Cho (Virginia Tech), and this guy had a lot in common. They were all deeply disturbed men from loving families that had really tried to help them, and were not able to.

In the 1970s, there were several TV exposés from mental hospitals, one by Geraldo Rivera (it made his career) about the evils of institutionalizing the severely mentally ill. At the same time, courts were supporting the rights of the mentally ill to decide whether or not they wanted to live in an institution. So many institutions were closed (which budget-cutting types loved, too) and it has become extremely difficult to commit anyone, even when they clearly seem dangerous.

I think the balance has to tip back towards protecting the public at large.

I know Buzzfeed ins't the holy grail of quality reporting but they posted excerpts from his 140 page "autobiography", WARNING it is graphic and very disturbing. I haven't felt this much disgust and pure, burning loathing for someone in my entire life. There are no words to describe this rotting sack of flesh.

  10. Adam Lanza, Seung Hui Cho and Rodger were all young men who were socially inept loners who lacked the capacity to interact with peers. Just meeting and greeting classmates was beyond their capacity.

Unfortunately such individuals are usually subject to taunting and bullying in their adolescences, which only exacerbates their frustration and in these cases turned into a homicidal rage. Family love wasn't enough to damper their frustrations or substitute for the emotional void that they felt because they couldn't seem to establish relationships beyond their immediate family.

But this condition in individuals has always existed, and suicide was sometimes the answer to such misery. My question is why there seems to be this growing trend of lashing out at strangers in mass killings. It can't just be the availability of guns, because they have always been around. There is also the common thread of psychoactive drugs which are almost always a part of the background of these mass murders. And then there is the obsessive love of video games. Add to these factors the thoughts that they are going out in a blaze of notoriety and recognition that they never achived in life.

It may be a demonic cocktail of all these things.

So we can add his kids to that list. Also all 90+ people I used to LAN with. And hey how about another 50-ish coopers at UCB I used to play video games with too. Gosh we're up too at least 200 people I know who have played violent video games for many years and have never been violent towards another person.

God but 1 or 2 people go on a murderous rampage and it's HAS to be because of violent video games eh??

  11. Nutty is absolutely right. Everything chaned during the Carter/Reagan terms.

Instead of reforming institutions - which were impossible to defend because of their inhumane practices - we simply demolished then.

The idea was to replace them with community housing situations. Butno dollars ever flowed there because they were seen as a social service rather than medical exppense. (I have an aged cousin who benefits from this. Our family is fortunate to have found a caring facility and bearing the cost, which isn inexpensive.)

Don't know the specifics but it reminds me of the incident where the male student targeted women on campus. He believed that women were favored over men in some scientific program and prevented his acceptance.

Even if the family wanted to take control they were disadvantaged. He was an adult. The cards are never stacked in the families favor.

We're lucky that our cousin listens to us and knows we're there to help. He can come and go as he pleases. But th e re is someone there to ensure he takes his meds and keeps up with his medical appointments. When he's on his meds hes a lamd. When he's not... well, that never goes well.

    4. Hi Kayla!

I love delurkers! Stay and play :)

But (we're CDaN friends now so I can dissent) I think it's a little unfair to give cops the blame. They're tied by social mores and laws, and this is a more complex situation (as mental health circumstances tend to be). Put yourself in the police officers' shoes - how many terrible nihilistic or threatening YouTube vids were posted today, do you think? And how much would society cry out if police went all Stalinist and brought those people into custody?

I agree with gun control (to a degree way stronger than US has - I'm not American) and I believe that would have helped here. But even so, this guy was a problem and he needed big help. But as much as I don't know the details of Californian law, I don't think the cops had a mandate to deal with what was happening here. I mean before *it* happened.

*usually my comments are like: "lol, yeah Courtney Stodden needs bigger bewbs, ha!" and "people including @Seven should watch star wars :(((" so don't be awkward ;)

  13. He stabbed 3 at his apartment and fatally shot 3 others, totaling 6 deaths before he took his own life.

I've read the whole manifesto and it is staggering how disconnected he was from reality. He had no insight into his issues, none. I look forward to reading what professionals (forensic psychologists) have to say about his manifesto.

The focus of the world should rest on the victims lives, the injured, the families and friends and the poor bystanders. May they all find comfort, support and healing.

If anyone is interested in this subject, the Psychiatric Annals' last issue (Volume 44 · Issue 5) is dedicated entirely to these topics (mass shooters, mental health, gun control etc). I have only worked with one mass shooter in my career, and I really have no idea how the fuck we are supposed to prevent these tragedies. What good will gun control measures really do, especially now that you can literally build your own guns on 3D printers and shit now?

I think an essential first start is training police to be more effective in identifying and handling mental welfare checks. What did they call Elliot? A perfectly wonderful human being??! Wtf.

  16. When my son threatened "mere" suicide while in Florida I was able to call the police from New York and have him apprehended and Baker Acted (a mandatory 72-hour hold in a psychiatric hospital). Isn't there a similar law in California that the police should have enforced? Or that the parents could have invoked?

    ReplyDelete

    1. CA has similar 5150 laws, where they can hold you short-term. However, the police are often not proficient during these assessments, and the individual often just denies it. That's what happens most of the time- they just pop by and then leave.

  20. @Queen Anne.........lets keep the facts straight:

One month prior to the election, President Carter had signed the Mental Health Systems Act, which had proposed to continue the federal community mental health centers program, although with some additional state involvement. Consistent with the report of the Carter Commission, the act also included a provision for federal grants "for projects for the prevention of mental illness and the promotion of positive mental health," an indication of how little learning had taken place among the Carter Commission members and professionals at NIMH. With President Reagan and the Republicans taking over, the Mental Health Systems Act was discarded before the ink had dried and the CMHC funds were simply block granted to the states. The CMHC program had not only died but been buried as well. An autopsy could have listed the cause of death as naiveté complicated by grandiosity.

Elliot then drove about 15mins to Isla Vista, knocked on the door of a sorority house. When no one answered, he began shooting at passerby. Here, he shot Katherine Cooper and Veronika Weiss on the lawn, and the third victim with these girls has survived the GSWs so far. Katherine was from Chino Hills, CA and Veronika was from the Thousand Oaks area.

Elliot then drove to the nearby IV Deli

  22. I sometimes think the problem is many of these generation of kids are so mollycoddled they are self entitled wusses and get frustrated when they don't get their way because mom and dad give into their every whim so they can't emotionally deal with it when the outside world is not so accomodating.

It's like we can't fail any kids because it is bad for their self esteem so the system keeps pushing them forward where they fall further and further behind but then they can't cope when they realize just how far behind they are?

Why does it seem bullying is more intense than ever, same offshoot of spoiled kids and kids raised with way too thin skins?

Like the kids who kill themselves because of being bullied on FB. Newsflash, get off FB. Problem solved.

  23. I read his manifesto last night. He's actually a decent writer. He describes his life from birth to present. He needed intervention early on in his childhood, but I don't think his parents took it seriously enough. He was always the smallest kid, terribly shy and bullied. The parents would move him around to different schools due to either life changes or to try to help him escape the bullying. Nobody ever helped him develop social skills. He states flat out he had social anxiety. The psychs they got him later on seemed incompetent. He was also spoiled and felt entitled...he even thought despite what he did have, it wasn't enough (and he lived much better than I ever did). Towards the last couple years he developed a belief that his only solution was to win the lottery and that the universe owed it to him for what he had endured up to that point. He also blamed women for rejecting him, but ironically he maybe mentioned ONE instance where he tried to say "hi" to a woman walking by and she didn't say a word. So he never even tried, from puberty on, to talk to the opposite sex. Partly because he was perceived as "different", some of the bullying incidents, especially from girls, scarred him deeply. I am female and I was bullied in school pretty bad, but I survived, and so do many others, but he didn't have the mental fortitude. In one way I feel sorry for him and can relate to that part, but on the other hand, he chose a very horrible way of dealing with it. In his mind, he hated women because they didn't want him, and other men, for getting the love & sex he never got. That coupled with him being spoiled and entitled was a disaster. I believe he could've been saved if there had been an intense intervention early on. In fact, as a child, he sounded like a decent kid. Once puberty hit, it was all downhill. It was a preventable tragedy...I just don't think the parents were tuned in enough. If they had talked to him more instead of just giving him "stuff" and money, maybe they would've realized he needed therapy early on to deal with life.

It's a rare therapist who is willing and able to provide the kind of social skills training that is necessary to help them better adapt to the social world. I can understand why parents would feel helpless, and even succumb to the temptation to provide some measure of comfort for their child with all the luxuries their wealth may provide.

    2. Doubt this kid actually had Asperger's / Autism. Read the manifesto. All signs point to Antisocial Personality Disorder (Sociopath) which is commonly misdiagnosed as Asperger's in adolescent males who are good at hiding the true depth of their psychosis from family and therapists.

All shall pay for my problems that are probably caused by the lack of parenting my parents gave me, the lessons in life I was taught such as everyone get's a trophy, nobody loses, and whatever BS psychobabel book Oprah has gotten all of Hollywood to believe!"

Fuck him! You want to know a story of a guy that was shy around girls and people his entire life, a guy that would throw up if he had to do any speaking in class, or meeting new people? This is a guy that was so oblivious, he couldn't see when girls were interested in him and didn't find out until a decade after they graduated. This guy now says stuff that is controversial to many people, doesn't care who he offends with his opinions and will go in front of crowds of close to a thousand and just start singing or talking without a second thought. That guy didn't think it was the fault of everyone else and go out and shoot up the place. No, this guy looked at what his problems were and realized it was all his own fault. The shyness was a symptom of the fear of being shot down. Then he realized, if that's the worst that can happen then so what? That's nothing. So now, this guy is writing telling about having a lot of the same problems the piece of shit in CA had but how he got over it. For the idiots, it's me. Millions of people go through this shit but deal with it. This piece of shit doesn't even deserve to have his name mentioned, to just disappear as if he never existed.

I also hope people boycott the new Hunger Games movie to show the punks Dad that he is at least partially responsible due to his shitty parenting. It's almost like this is a snapshot of the Hollywood Parenting Handbook, raising kids that feel everything is based around their needs and wants, that the "normals" don't matter and are only there for your pleasure. But society will never completely outgrow and contain the violent among us. And their parents rightly - as we ask - try to raise them uninstitutionalised. I think the conversation we need to have is about harm minimisation. Do we need more institutions? Will we pay to find them? Should America increase gun control (yes please)? Are we prepared to not pillory parents that institutionalise their child (think about that one - seriously).

@TeresaCrane - I couldn't agree more. I think a huge *part* of the problem is the NRA.

A few people up thread asked why he was able to buy guns. From what I've heard, he was able to because 1) he didn't have a criminal record and 2) because he had never been committed. Therefore, no record.

I think this guy's parents did everything in their power to help him. He had been in therapy for years, but refused to take medication, they notified the police when the videos were brought to their attention. 35. I mentioned I read the manifesto upthread, but think it's important to say it tells the story of his life, experiences and agenda from his point of view. There was very little mention of therapy, counsellors, and psychiatrists. Who knows what his parents actually did or did not do.

I thought it was interesting one of his doctors was that controversial psychiatrist, Charles Sophy (he was on RHOBH and Celebrity Rehab). The killer never once mentioned a diagnosis or that he had received interventions so early in his life.

The thing is, most psychiatrists only RX drugs. Nothing more. I think that should be the last thing tried...counseling first (although I couldn't gather from his manifesto how much he really got, sounded minimal). Even so, as an adult he chose to not take the meds anyways.

He repeated many times how lonely he was and craved social interaction, but he couldn't initiate it. He chose to blame the outside world for it instead of examining how to fix himself.

  36. Lady H - in the cases of these mental health welfare checks, like the one the Santa Barbara police seemingly horribly botched, is there a mechanism where the PD can pick up the patient and take him to be evaluated by an actual PET team? It seems silly that we expect police to make a psychiatric assessment. They aren't trained to do that. Can the police act as liaison to have the person in question evaluated by someone who is qualified?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Obviously, I'm not saying we should trains cops to be de facto mental health practitioners, but yes, we do need something like that in place and there is not.

Another thing you have to consider is that a lot of these cases involve relatively high functioning or severely manipulative individuals. I can specifically think of two cases in OC and three in Chico within the past 15 months, where welfare checks were dismissed and should have been taking more seriously. In all but one, all they had to do was look at their Facebook or Twitter feed from that day. Let's be real here too- cops are likely to be more favorably biased towards guys like Elliot. He is rich, goes to school, was probably saying he had a psychiatric team monitoring him yada yada

I have only heard of one instance in the past year where a PD brought in experts for an intervention in a similar case. That was done by LAPD, but only because the individual had a criminal record and was a documented gang member. It's very rare.

  37. I read the manifest crap, well skipped thru his middle years... And he had two regular therapists plus his parents had at least three social behavior it's try and help him acclimate to college and make friends/socialize. He started throwing coffee and drinks at couples a few years ago acc to his story and he had a handful of friends that knew he would become enraged at the sight of happy couples. His parents tried to help. They did all they knew to do. He wrote that he was going to kill his half bro and stepmom too so at least that didn't work for him. Thank The Lord that sorority house didn't open the door. He was going to kill them all. He wrote about decapitating his roommates etc.

This is a guy who could charm people into believing he was okay. Why can't there be a flag set up in the system of gun control for those that have discussed harming themselves or others? I guess it would be too hard to distinguish the insane from the occasional social problem.

The only way this kid could have been stopped was the cops that visited him in April. It would've been prevented if they had searched.

Second, we have no idea how his parents raised him. We have Elliot's diatribe, from his point of view, but his parents have released few statements and the LA Times is now reporting different info than it had on Saturday. The family has backed off the Asperger's diagnosis, and whatever antidepressants he may have been prescribed in the past he probably stopped using them. We can speculate and opinionate to high heaven, but none of us know.

Third, he legally obtained those guns in CA, which is a background check 5 day waiting period state. I worked in the CA legislature, this is a 51%+ Democratic state, you can pass almost any gun control bill here but if you have a clean record and do the paperwork, you can still get the guns you want. Elliot had no criminal history and no involuntary psych holds, therefore he got his license. So what should have prevented him from buying guns? That he was under psychiatric care? Is that what we want, to further stigmatize people who are seeking treatment?

    Blergh, long enough. Rant over.

  41. Lady H, thanks for commenting. I guess I was asking if the PD were "allowed" to involve the PET team, sounds like they are. That's good to know. Thanks again.

    1. No problem. They definitely CAN legally do more, but they just do the bare minimum of a standard welfare check 80-90% of the time.

I just heard that his poor roommates had just filed petitions to move out, away from Elliot. I get that the bigger story and clicks come from sorority girl victims and gun control but half of the victims here were not killed by firearms. I think the MO switch is interesting. He used a much more personal killing method for those he knew. Could also be that gun shots would have foiled him from getting to Isla Vista to carry out his plan. This case just keeps getting crazier and crazier

  42. Oh please, are they going to try and blame Asperger's for this one like they did with that psycho Adam Lanza? GTFO, I have Asperger's and so do plenty of friends I have at my support group. We are not all a bunch of lunatics waiting for the right moment to go shoot up a school. This guy may have been an Aspie but he clearly had other things wrong with him too.

He was lonely, he had a hard time making friends, ooh fucking boo hoo, that describes all Aspies (myself included) and most of us don't take it out on innocent people.

Sounds like this guy's main problem was being spoiled brat who couldn't cope with not getting his own way.

  43. Maybe if he and others like him did not have such easy access to guns NONE of these killings would have happened....access to guns without decent background checks is the one thing I will never understand about the US (*opens can of worms*)...

  44. Obviously this guy was seriously mentally ill. Thanks to policies passed in the 1980's, you have to be damn sure a mentally ill person is going to hurt someone before you can put them in an institution. No one is ever sure that someone they know and love is actually capable of the horrendous acts this person committed until it is too late.

Michael Moore was dead-on with his response. With the lax gun laws and the incessant fear spread by the corporate media on daily basis to get you to buy their products, we will see this again and again and again, etc, etc, etc.

  45. Lady H, I had heard that the roommates had told their families they were going to move to a new place when their lease expired, but they hadn't told Elliot yet, they were waiting until classes ended. But, he mentioned in his writings that he had to kill them first anyway so that he could use the apartment as his killing lair.

This is not a symptom of Aspergers and I'm getting really tired of the losers on twitter, etc, trying to pin this on it. Asp is NOT a violent disorder. Violence, anger, hatred like that of Rodger and Lanza comes from a different place entirely.

    1. Ugh....so sad. Thanks for that update. Does not surprise me. I wonder if he drugged them too.

  46. @FS - it was the family's lawyer, shortly after the gunman was identified, who mentioned Asperger's (which was picked up by the LA Times). A while later, they (family & LA Times) revised that statement.

    1. Yeah. I think their lawyer jumped out too quickly and possibly without all the facts on Saturday. I can barely imagine the anguish they are going through. Their guilt must be soul crushing.

  47. +Lady H.

No doubt he probably had diagnosed Aspergers but also a cocktail of other disorders (most definitely NPD and APD) which created, essentially, a monster. Diagnosis on the DSM is taken across five axis' so each personal makeup is different.

Ie you can have a sociopath function in society but not potentially if they sexually sadistic tendencies and low impulse control etc

I would take that manifesto as a massive grain of salt. The rantings of a socially-inept narcissistic with rage issues and violent tendencies is hardly a slice of reality.

  48. @count: Is Peter Rodger's new wife really 22?! Same age as Elliot?! What is the scoop on her?

    1. My understanding is she is French-Moroccan, got together with the dad when Elliot Rodger was 7-years-old, has a 6-year-old son with the father. This does not indicate that she is 22.

Here is another take on Elliot Rodger and his actions.

  49. @LadyH: I really have no clue about her except she has a very fuckable ass. I read that she was 22 and I think she is Moroccan, not Asian. The killer's mom is Asian.

  50. Yeah, the stepmom is not 22. She has two children with Peter Rodger, including a teenage daughter.

I guess the goal is to make your own chocolate creations or download some from a website. That would be cool, because the Edible Anus people wouldn't tell me if the model was a man or a woman.

  52. I am a long time CDAN reader, but very infrequent commenter. I went to UCSB and am an alumni of the sorority that was initially targeted. Words cannot describe how heartbroken I am for the families of the deceased, the student body and the whole community of Goleta/Santa Barbara. The scary thing is that there could have been so many more casualties if someone had answered the door at Alpha Phi, or if that sorry excuse of a human planned his attack even one night before. It is all very reminiscent of when David Attias drove his car down Del Playa in 2001 with intent of killing and harming as many people as possible. I feel that last Friday night could have been avoided in so many ways.

Thanks to the CDAN community whose comments I read on a daily basis. I feel that I know many of you even though I keep to myself most of the time. Hope you all had a happy and safe Memorial Weekend.

    1. Lots of love & hugs to you and your sorority, sweetie.

My brother was actually at UCSB when that happened in 2001. That's what started the whole drive behind "cleaning up/cracking down" on IV. I am still kind of in shock

  54. Thanks Lady Heisenberg. I left IV in 1998, but still had many friends still in school in 2001. I'm glad that your brother was safe. It's unimaginable that something like this happened again. I look back at those years as the best years of my life, and it just saddens me that so many young adults are faced with this now. I've been getting bits and pieces from what happened and I've heard that it was the "house mom" who sensed that something was wrong and she was yelling for the girls to stay away from the doors/windows and to stay low.

  56. @Count J, I'm not sure if the image you posted was marked as Soumaya, the stepmom but that picture isn't her.

These are from the same site (Peter Rodger's) and are the stepmom. I don't know her age but she looks to be roughly the same age the killer's Dad.

    http://www.peterrodger.com/soumaya.html - SFW

@Surfer, from what I read the teenage daughter is her stepdaughter.

@GGirl, if that is true about the housemother then she definitely deserves a lot of credit. If ER had gone into the sorority house there would have been a lot more deaths that night.

  57. @Rose: I am just repeating what I read on a message board. I have ZERO interest in the case. If someone hadn't posted pics of 2 chicks who were killed, I never would have clicked on the thread and seen the link to pop's website or seen the mental patient's hot sister.
