Off Topic

For some reason I enjoy Cinco De Mayo much more than St. Patrick's Day. I think the green everything kind of ruins it all.

  2. Or more like because you supposedly live in Southern California. I have a feeling Enty may feel differently if he lived in say, Chicago. Or is he trying to tell us that he is a Mexican? Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!!!

    7. Iknorite, Lady H?? I used to be fluent and just then I couldn't remember the word for "party". They named a car after it, for the love of Bob! It's practically English!

    8. I wish I'd taken Spanish instead of French. :/ The only place I can use my French is in fancy restaurants that I never visit.

Well, I do know SOME Spanish

    9. I took them both at the same time, all the way through school, so I would switch words out alla time. I actually yelled at me Spanish teacher for speaking French to me: how was I supposed to keep that shite straight??

  3. i think both holidays are now just reduced down to drinking, instead of the actual historical significance.

if i wanna drink, i just do it. i dont need to feign enthusiasm for a holiday.

  4. Well, I'd rather drink Dos Equios than green beer, so I feel you there. It's a great day for a birthday or anniversary, so easy to remember! Plus most of the snow that came yesterday melted, soo woo hoo!

  6. Hmmm... Green beer & corn beef vs. margaritas & Mexican food... No brainer!!
Cinco de Mayo > St Patrick's Day!!

  7. Maybe it's because I'm half-Irish, but I love St. Patrick's Day! And nothing beats a Guinness.

    1. I agree, Guiness is the better part of St. Patrick's Day, even if it is a little chewy

  8. Also, OT OT, I just heard the BEST song on the radio: Stay With Me by Sam Smith. I have no idea where this man's voice came from or how I haven't heard him before, but it's AHmazeing

  10. Historian David E. Hayes-Bautista says, "The Cinco de Mayo is not, in its origins, a Mexican holiday at all but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California in the middle of the 19th century."

We celebrated Cinco de Quattro last night and made some super fancy tacos. Ah, the life of an OC housewife. :P

Personally, I prefer St Patrick's Day. Then again, I am from Chicago and there's nothing like drinking a Green River on a green river. :)

Will check that out, TTM. Haven't heard of him either.

OT OT OT: the movie Goats, featuring none other than Dakota Johnson, was surprisingly entertaining.

  17. As a Mexican here, let me just raise a glass to Corona company, here is to all Americans filling their coffers with money.
We do not celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Mexico like you do, we just get the day off work. It's an important battle, Battle
of Puebla, we beat Bonaparte's army, that's it. The French still kicked out asses.
It's not Independence Day, it's not Revolutionary War Day. It's not "Celebrate our Mexicanness" Day either.
Corona just knows how to make money.

    Have fun.

  21. Since the Lame Video Post has Joel McHottieMcSluttypants, I thought I'd better bring up Book Club here. So nobody whines about OT. So, ladies and gents, sounded like Gone Girl was the most talked-about choice, but was a but tricky because of course it's nit actually a movie yet. Let's give it one more shot: either reply here or on the book club link on my profile, I'm throwing Fight Club into the ring. Awesome book / movie until aboot halfway through, then it went all Leto face-punchy and was still the best thing I've seen Brad Pitt.in, save Snatch.

    Vote y'all!

  22. I love Fight Club the book and film. Chuck is a crazy morherfucker, I actually wrote to him when I was much younger and he sent me back a page long letter and about 20 little gifts along with it. Nice guy, twisted as fuck.

I am tossing Requiem for a Dream in the ring at some point. We need some of that literary A2A

    1. That's a great idea, Lady H! I saw it, hated it and remember absolutely no A2A whatsoever, so I never get what everyone is talking about

    2. Fight Club! Own that movie, I love it so...

  23. According to Americans, dress as a Japanese/AfricanAmerican/... is racist and getting shitfaced in a Mexican/Irish party is a great celebration.
    Yeah.

Anyway, feliz cinco de mayo a todos los comentaristas de la web. ¡Y viva México, cabrones! Y a ponerse hasta atrás.

(Disclaimer: I'm not Mexican but European, but I respect most countries and people).

  24. @TTM - I haven't participated in book club so far, but am trying to pick my next read & am totally up for any of those!! Can I join in on the fun?!

  25. Voting for Gone Girl! The love/hate divide is something else and starts great conversations.

BUT if Fight Club is the winner, I'm all in! Great book, loved the movie, and the author is a trip.

Fun fact: the "Project Mayhem" club was based on the "Cacophony Society" (of which CP was a part of), which in turn had roots in San Francisco's Suicide Club.

  26. Also voting Gone Girl, but up for anything!

  27. Who even heard of Cinqo de Mayo a few years ago? I'm for it of course, I love any holiday.

  28. Cinco deMayo is truly just a marketing ploy by Corona. They amped it up BIG TIME. Before that no one really gave a crap.

  29. I hate holidays where the prime reason people like them is so they have an excuse to get wasted (see: NY's eve, St Patricks Day, Cinco de Mayo). You wanna drink, fine, just don't use the stupid holiday as an excuse.

  30. I've actually READ gone girl! I could be in da club. Most of the books I read are by celebrities or like the new book by Babe Walker. I haven't started that one but the first one was funny.
