Deryck Whibley Nearly Drank Himself To Death
Deryck Whibley is a very lucky guy. He nearly killed himself drinking. This weekend he shared a post on his website showing just how close he came to death.
hey everyone, it’s deryck here. sorry i’ve been so m.i.a. lately, but i’ve been very sick in the hospital for a month and was pretty sick for a few weeks leading up to my trip to the hospital. the reason i got so sick is from all the hard boozing i’ve been doing over the years. it finally caught up to me. i was drinking hard every day. until one night. i was sitting at home, poured myself another drink around mid night and was about to watch a movie when all of a sudden i didn’t feel so good. i then collapsed to the ground unconscious. my fiancé got me rushed to the hospital where they put me into the intensive care unit. i was stuck with needles and i.v.’s all over. i was completely sedated the FIRST WEEK. when i finally woke up the next day i had no idea where i was. my mum and step dad were standing over me. i was so freaked out. my liver and kidney’s collapsed on me. needless to say it scared me straight. i finally realized i can’t drink anymore. if i have one drink the doc’s say i will die. i’m not preaching or anything but just always drink responsibly. i didn’t, and look where that got me. (i never thought i would ever say that! haha) anyway i have my passion and inspiration back for writing music. i already have a few song ideas for new songs. soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again. see you all sometime! there will be more posts again so say up to date friends.
So, basically he has been in the hospital a month straight and most of his major organs shut down. It is interesting to note that he says he was sick for several weeks leading up to his hospitalization and probably realized it had something to do with his drinking but never stopped. If he had been home alone, chances are he would have died. Heck, even if his girlfriend had been home, but asleep, he might have died. Here is hoping that the trip to the hospital and almost dying did convince him he can't drink anymore.
Wow, pretty young for it too. Keep the faith, Deryck

All is well here, Steamy! I have the tolerance of an arthritic golpher (Toronto trip notwithstanding), so I rarely am able to drink enough for a hangover. Good times last night, though! Woot!
DeleteThanks Steamy!
ReplyDeletemorning Steamy
ReplyDeleteHere!! Busy. Actual real life friends and coffee. Back later.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how some hard core alcoholics make it to the senior years - I guess everyone has different constitutions - it is the same with other drugs - you wonder how all the cokeheads from the 80s and still doing it are still alive. Never mind coke puts holes in your brain. That is what David Bowie says got him to quit. A friend showed him the brain of a dead cocaine addict and it looked like Swiss cheese. Of course meth makes cocaine looks like child's play.
ReplyDeleteI went to my cousins wedding last night and he was high school friends with Deryk and the Sum 41 clan. My uncle use to help them lug around their gear back in the day in Ajax ON....
ReplyDeleteDerek - just curious. Where was your wedding? I know someone who was married downtown last night.
ReplyDeleteEveryone's body is different... I was a coke Hoover in my early days I can't stand it now nor can I handle the after effects...yet I have friends that I partied with 15 years back that still blow coke and go out drinking every single day. I don't get it!
ReplyDelete@Sufer--hey! It was actually in Ajax...Lots of fun. One more bottle of wine though I would be joining the other Deryk in the hospital! lol
ReplyDeleteGlad he's getting help. Must have been one hell of a detox that first week.
ReplyDeleteGlad he's taken control.
ReplyDeleteattn chad.. this is your future
ReplyDeleteTina: I remember a Bowie interview in the '80s in Rolling Stone where he admitted that he couldn't remember most/all of 1975--someone showed him pictures of himself at the Grammys with John and Yoko, and he had absolutely no recollection of the event whatsoever. Granted, 1975 wasn't that great a year, but when an entire chunk of time is missing from your mind, well...
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, good thoughts and good luck to Derrick.
He needs rehab to relearn coping skills IMO. If not, he'll test the doctors warnings. Especially if he drank while doing something like with breakfast. He's gotta a big opp to teach kids. I hope he doesn't throw it away.
ReplyDeleteSugarbread maker...Don't put the blame for this guy's alcoholism on Avril. She may be all kinds of things but responsible for his drinking himself to near death is not one of them. That is all on his shoulders.
ReplyDelete...just curious, what his fiancée was doing or not doing all that time that he was obviously drinking himself to death-I mean, you turn a ghastly shade of yellow & your stomach distends alienlike when the liver AND kidneys are overworked & can't filter the toxins anymore way b4 they completely fail..
ReplyDeleteNO ONE can stop an addict from using and his sobriety is not her responsibility. Living with an addict is an incredibly difficult and painful thing, and it is far more likely than not that she did try to intervene for a very long time to no avail. Besides, sobriety never even has a chance at sticking unless the user is doing it for themselves.
DeleteWho is this guy? Roadie for Molly Hatchet?
ReplyDeleteGood for Deryk for being so open about his addiction and the near death experience that resulted from it. Normally I'm completely against anyone sharing hospital pics on social media-time and a place people-but it seems like this was a necessary part of his healing and, hopefully, his road to recovery. Admission and acceptance are the first steps! Rooting for him.
ReplyDeletePulling for you, Deryk.
ReplyDeleteStay sober, Deryck.
ReplyDeleteGood morning everyone! Australia is awake!
ReplyDeleteI would have done the same if I married Avril Lavigne.
ReplyDeleteHe has always seemed like such a sweet guy. I hope he beats his addiction. Overcoming addiction is harder than climbing Mt. Everest. Kudos to anyone who can overcome it, and my utmost respect to those who've even tried, even if they've failed.
ReplyDeleteI agree MadLyb. Nice post...
