I adored Cat Stevens back in the day - I have all his albums in my record collection. I thought he'd given up on all this 'showbiz' malarkey. (o/t I was watching The Taste the other day and there's an actual judge called Malarkey - what were his parents even thinking?)
Ha Sherry, I bet those guys had a Courtney free zone. Still trying to think about how JJ would sound singing their songs, though. Love Peter Gabriel! Second the "wish I was there" emotion.
@charlie I did wonder if you were trying to make some clever comment there. Glad you weren't cos it would have gone completely over my head. Hope you're having a lovely holiday.
A man has the right to change his name to whatever he wants to change it to. And if a man wants to be called Yusuf Islam, god dammit this is a free country, you should respect his wishes, and call the man Yusuf Islam!
I used to love Cat too! From what I've read he didn't do music for a long time but his son convinced him that it was OK. If he's found peace in Islam nothing wrong with that. FYI he was taken off the List after the previous mistake was proved ill founded.
Stipe looks as if he's going to vomit if she doesnt move away from him. Carrie underwood is sooooo vanilla. I wonder why Gene Simmons doesnt see his rat nest hair like the rest of us go. It aint pretty.
Actually, Courtney & Stipe have been friends for over 20 years now, although I don't think they're as close as they used to be...and yes, apparently she, Krist and Dave all "hugged it out" last night. (No idea how long that'll last, but at least last night was a civilized occasion.) Joan Jett playing w/Nirvana isn't as weird as it seems; she played with the surviving Gits for a while after Mia Zapata's murder (they found the worthless piece of shit who killed her a few years ago using DNA; he'll never see the outside of a prison again, thank God), so presumably she knew other people in Seattle.
Is it just me, or does John Oates barely seem to have aged? Sorry to hear Tommy ripped them off; karma's going to be a bitch to him someday...
Speaking of civilized behavior, at least all the KISS guys (well, really, Gene) behaved themselves and spoke well of each other, and if I understand correctly, the various other members got a shout-out, even if they weren't allowed to come.
(Fingers crossed that NIN gets into the HoF next year...I wonder who they'd get to induct Trent? Bowie, perhaps?)
In the 80s Hall and Oates were my guilty pleasure, along with INXS...my little break from harder rock. I didn't know Motolla had ripped them off. Gene and Paul wanted the current line up of KISS to play and the hall said no, because it was the original lineup that was inducted. They didn't perform but I am glad to see they all showed up for the occasion.
Salman Rushdie had choice words (via Twitter) for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: "Dear Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, this is who you're inducting tonight. Congratulations." He included a link to Yusuf Islam/Cat Stevens*' support of Rushdie's fatwa, and cc'ed him, too.
(* It's not clear to me which name he's using these days, sorry.)
I get that Cobain's dead but why did the other members of Nirvana get to chose who performed with them when Gene and Paul couldn't choose the members of KISS in the band right now to perform? Would I rather see Ace and Peter up there with them performing? Hell yes, but I can see why Gene and Paul feel that the current lineup is the one that performed and when told they couldn't said "Fuck it, we'll show up but not play". There have been many, many iterations of KISS over the last 40 years, every person is a piece of the puzzle that gave them the staying power they had and all of them should've been honored. For God's sake, they inducted all 942 members of Bruce Springsteen's backup band (ironically including a person who played on more KISS albums if you count solo albums than Peter Criss did in Anton Fig) why not let the other living members of KISS perform along with the original four?
Come on, it is KISS. They weren't giving the R n R HOF the rights to one of their performances. Gene and the other guy probably asked for an exorbitant fee.
I see Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley in my lobby when they visit their publicist. They make ME feel old (and I'm not; I was 9 when I saw them back in the Day!)
KISS is famous only for what the original 4 did; nobody would've bought a damn one of their albums in the 80's if they hadn't already been big. That is the lineup deserving induction.
I have nothing against Thayer and Singer, but to what original stuff have they contributed? Nothing HoF worthy.
Ace and Peter have issues, and Gene has his own (the worst I've heard about Paul is that he may wear a wig), but they used to be really really good.
Oh man I wish I was there. Stipe looks like he wants to get away from Courtney. I wonder if she hugged the boys from Nirvana..Nah.. probably not.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder Frances no showed Courtney looked like a mess.
ReplyDeleteKISS just such wunnerful buds. They looked ridiculous should have worn the makeup

ReplyDeleteCat Stevens was there?
ReplyDeleteDid he shout "DEATH TO AMERICA"?
Ha Sherry, I bet those guys had a Courtney free zone. Still trying to think about how JJ would sound singing their songs, though.
ReplyDeleteLove Peter Gabriel! Second the "wish I was there" emotion.
Shit, I'd pay to see Joan Jett with the Nirvana boys.
ReplyDeleteTrying to unseen Peter Gabriel. "That old Mann's not him. That old Mann's not him"
*sigh* man is. Not Mann's. why you gotta harsh my vaycay, spelchek?
Delete@charlie I did wonder if you were trying to make some clever comment there. Glad you weren't cos it would have gone completely over my head.
DeleteHope you're having a lovely holiday.
@OneEye, that pic of Peter.. I'm traumatized. Seriously, I may have to take to my bed for the weekend. :'(
DeleteHope you're having a fab time!
I didn't think Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam) was allowed back in the country...
ReplyDeleteStevie!!!!
ReplyDeleteAgreed, @Sherry, Stipe looks frozen with horror.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand Cat Stevens.
I thought KISS wasn't attending the induction? Or was that another band?
Yeah thanks for that Charlie.
ReplyDeleteNow I have to look up Blinded by the Light so I won't have it stuck in my head all like a runner in the night.
@baconranch or else you'll be wrapped up like a douche
DeleteCan't believe they let that twat Lorde cover a Nirvana tune for the tribute. Her singing and dancing are embarrassing
ReplyDeleteKISS refused to perform or wear their makeup the way the organizers wanted them to @7.
ReplyDeleteDaryl Hall will always be a hottie to me and Courtney Love, get your monster claws off Michael Stipe.
ReplyDeleteStevie forever
ReplyDeleteUnderwood
ReplyDeleteNicks
Crow
Yeah...STEVIE!
ReplyDeleteI thought that about Cat Stevens, too, Babs.
A man has the right to change his name to whatever he wants to change it to. And if a man wants to be called Yusuf Islam, god dammit this is a free country, you should respect his wishes, and call the man Yusuf Islam!
ReplyDeletePeter Gabriel and Daryl Hall - Yes. I still would. Though that's like 2 peter gabriels sitting at that piano.
ReplyDeleteWhat a group of pics that was. Pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteI love Cat Stevens in a completely unironic way. Also Peter Gabriel
ReplyDeleteCranky garden gnome!!!
ReplyDeleteOther than that, this lot depresses the fuck out of me.
I used to love Cat too! From what I've read he didn't do music for a long time but his son convinced him that it was OK. If he's found peace in Islam nothing wrong with that. FYI he was taken off the List after the previous mistake was proved ill founded.
ReplyDeleteOh and Peter Gabriel is one of my faves. Maybe a desert island pick.
ReplyDeleteI think the women are aging better than the men. STEVIE!!!
ReplyDeleteStipe looks as if he's going to vomit if she doesnt move away from him. Carrie underwood is sooooo vanilla. I wonder why Gene Simmons doesnt see his rat nest hair like the rest of us go. It aint pretty.
ReplyDeleteHall & Oates was my first concert - my 7th grade self was thrilled!
ReplyDeleteSTEVIE <3. Joan Jett and Nirvana come in at a close second.
ReplyDeleteI love Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam. It's about time they honored him.
ReplyDeleteAbout time for Peter Gabriel too.
Gene and Paul clearly hate each other's guts, which is kind of fun.
I forgot Hall & Oats, those poor guys. Tommy Mottola stole every dime they ever made.
ReplyDeleteStevie!!! Love her.

Okay so is that Ace and Peter with KISS or what? I can't even tell anymore.
ReplyDeleteLove me some Peter Gabriel.
ReplyDeleteIn the 80s Hall and Oates were my guilty pleasure, along with INXS...my little break from harder rock. I didn't know Motolla had ripped them off.

Carrie Underwood needs new hair. That old profile shot of Cat Stevens looks like Dave Navarro! Hot!
ReplyDeleteRobin, I didn't know they caught the guy! Off to google it now!

Hm.

ReplyDelete@snapdragon
ReplyDeleteI thought Cat said that was all a "misunderstanding" about Rushdie.
Anyhoo, I want to read Paul Stanley's book. For some unknown reason, I'm fascinated by KISS even though I only liked "Beth" which only Criss sung on.
I saw a pic of Courtney hugging Grohl.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that Motolla ripped Hall and Oates off.
ReplyDeleteOk, so I am quite unique, but I would love to be in that Bill Murray/John McEnroe sandwich, sigh....
ReplyDeleteBack in the mid seventies Cat Stevens was hot ! He has aged horribly.
ReplyDeleteCome on, it is KISS. They weren't giving the R n R HOF the rights to one of their performances. Gene and the other guy probably asked for an exorbitant fee.
ReplyDeleteI saw Stevie perform as a surprise guest at a Tom Petty show. They were doing traveling Wilbury songs - it was epic
ReplyDeleteI see Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley in my lobby when they visit their publicist. They make ME feel old (and I'm not; I was 9 when I saw them back in the Day!)

Courtney's figure looks oddly....trussed, in that gown.
