Mickey Rooney Has Died

Mickey Rooney, the actor who was one of MGM’s giant box office attractions in the late ’30s and early ’40s, has died. He was 93. Here is a great story about Mickey by someone who met him a couple of years ago.

    He was HUGE in his day, bigger than Gable and Garbo and Garland.

    Also Ava Gardner's first husband. She had mostly good things to say about him, not counting his infidelity. But supposedly he was a energetic in bed.

      No, he was never bigger than Gable, no one was from the mid 1930s to maybe 1950.
      When he was shown that he didn't wear an undershirt [sleeveless type] in "It Happened One Night" in 1934, the sales of those things plummeted!

    @Nutty_Flavor, in Maureen O'Hara's biography, she said that she was sitting by herself in a room at a party when Ava Gardner came in with a couple other people. They didn't know she was there and she overheard Ava say that she couldn't stand being married to Rooney (they had only JUST gotten married) and was going to ask for a divorce. Her friends urged her to wait until the six month mark (or 1-year mark?) so that she would get a bigger settlement from him. Sure enough, that's when she filed. Maureen O'Hara said that she always felt guilty for not warning Mickey, but she was in the middle of her own marriage problems and didn't want to get involved in someone else's.

    I just thought it was an interesting story--RIP Mickey.

    Thank you Enty for posting Mickey Rooney's passing (May he rest in peace). Was watching CNN's HN this morning and every hour on the hour they mentioned John Pinette passing (May he RIP), but not ONCE did they mention Mickey Rooney. Don't get me wrong J Pinette (50)deserves mention, but come on....really? Every hour on the hour over Mickey Rooney was 93 was known world wide....and not one single mention. It just cements the notion that large media companies have their heads up their asses.

    Babes in Arms was the first musical I ever did in high school, so I watched the film version (Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland) about a million times. Pretty awesome life he lived.

    RIP Mickey! About 30 years ago my brother in law met him in Hawaii, and spent the afternoon with him discussing movies. He was very nice and actually encouraged my brother in law to be an actor.

    I have such great memories of watching all the old Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland movies when I was a little girl. RIP, Mickey!

    When I heard this, I thought it was about Micky Rourke! I idly thought what a shame it was that he wasn't getting more time to be cross-dressingly happy in his skin. Then I stopped thinking about it.
