Lupita Nyong'o Is People's Most Beautiful
Julia Roberts had her people working full-time to land the honor of being named People's Most Beautiful, but I think the death of her half-sister and the publicity that came out of her death sullied Julia's chances. Not that she deserved it, but it just goes to show you that this award is primarily PR driven. Instead of getting the full cover, Julia has to be a moon to the amazing Lupita Nyong'o, who becomes the first African American woman, and only the second woman of color to be featured.
I'm actually proud of People for not just giving in and making some publicist happy. Sure, Lancome probably put in a huge ad buy, but I think most people were probably expecting Lupita to just be an also ran while we all were told how beautiful some star is that we know isn't all that great.
I think People needed to redeem itself after last year's debacle when Gwyneth Paltrow won as Most Beautiful Woman. They tweaked the category slightly which allows them to include men and also maybe count other things besides beauty in their equation if they are considering beautiful to also mean the person, rather than just their looks.
I'm really happy for Lupita and caps an amazing twelve months for her.
Lupita is beautiful. Horseface and GOOP no so much.
ReplyDeletei thought this would be kerry washington and her bebe reveal.. cause we all know she had that boy months ago
ReplyDeleteKerry Washington has had a lot of work done. Look at her old films, her surgeons deserve an award.
DeleteJust to add they are NOT inside or outside.
ReplyDeleteI thought that issue like just happened. Has it really been a year?
ReplyDeleteShe is absolutely stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think she is African American, enty-of-the-day. She is, infancy, Kenyan Mexican.
Infact*. (Darn autocorrect, but, she only lived in Mwxico her infancy and then moved back to Kenya)
DeleteTis true. Her family lived in Mexico for a time while her father was a political refugee, and she happened to be born there.
DeleteJulia Roberts is too full of herself and should really get over herself.
ReplyDeleteNot surprising. Lupita was kinda the only choice for this.
ReplyDeleteAlso, past winners such as Halle, Beyoncé, and JLo would be considered "women of color," non?
@sandy
ReplyDeleteHey sandy! Exactly! Lupita is truly gorgeous.
I just don't agree with all this most beautiful nonsense. It's all subjective anyway and buys into all that is wrong with making beauty better than the whole person. Obviously Lupita is very lovely having got off my soapbox.
ReplyDeleteViolet, my sentiments exactly. And im thankful im not someone who is sweating this out, hoping to be chosen.
DeleteI think she is sooo beautiful, her skin is luminous, and that smile!
ReplyDeleteHmmm Beyoncé and Halle aren't African American? They are both past winners.....
ReplyDeletePerhaps they are not being counted as African American because they are biracial?
DeletePersonally I wouldn't exclude them for that reason, I think they both self identify as black women, and it is how they are perceived.
Halle yes. Beyoncé no although she loves the fact that people think she is. She's mixed like all African Americans are....
DeleteIf you want to pick nits, the fact is Lupita is not African-American. She was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents and raised in Kenya.
DeleteSo by your biracial definition, Obama isn't the first African American President?
DeleteI'm truly tired of all these "beautiful" lists and "sexiest man" crap. It's all such transparent BS. I want who's the "most perverse" list and the "best plastic surgery" list.
ReplyDeleteLupita is just African, so she's the first African woman to grace the cover.
ReplyDeleteI'm fine with Lupita.. but Mindy Kaling? Clooney's ex-girlfriend, Tatum's wife, huh??
ReplyDeleteBeyonce's not biracial though she obviously has some white ancestors somewhere. The most beautiful biracial woman at the Oscars was McConaughey's wife Camila. Now, she's gorgeous.
ReplyDelete@Runswithscissors and @Sarah, thank you, for clarifying the fact that Lupita is NOT African American in anyway. She identifies herself at Mexican-Kenyan.
ReplyDeleteLupita seems beautiful inside and out. I remember her oscar speech when she said, "it has not escaped me that my happiness tonight comes at the cost of others suffering in order to make that movie." (not verbatim, but close)
ReplyDeleteLupita is an absolutely stunning woman.
Kenyan - Mexican is totally African American because Kenya is in Africa and Mexico is in America, at least according to non - US education geography.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to speak about her skin colour, use another word unless you want to be stupid to most of the world ears.
This said, I have already stated that she is cute and classy, but she doesn't give me any boner, like her antecessor Audrey Hepburn.
Can we call her black?
Delete@Sadie Don't forget Amber Heard, Johnny Depp's girlfriend. I love that Lupita got the cover, but it rally is a popularity contest and not necessarily who is the most beautiful.
ReplyDelete"I think People needed to redeem itself after last year's debacle when Gwyneth Paltrow won as Most Beautiful Woman."
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!!! When I saw that cover last year I thought WTF?
Kenyan - Mexican is totally African American because Kenya is in Africa and Mexico is in America, at least according to non - US education geography."
ReplyDeleteUmm, okay. The next time I run into her on the street I'll tell her "It doesn't matter what you say or think, Lupita. You're still African-American." That should go over well.
Sarcasm, dude.
DeleteThese 'awards' seem more like Oscar butt kissing than anything else. Gets worse each year.
ReplyDeletebut but kim kardashian should have won....WTF ..
ReplyDeletekidding
I think it's funny that if People had chosen someone Enty didn't like, he would have had a fit and called them kneepads, etc. But since they chose someone he likes, he's all for it. What makes you think that Lupita's PR people didn't set this up? She's needing the publicity, just like any other actress. And yes, she' beautiful but I don't think that People decided to go legit this year.
ReplyDeleteJulia Roberts, you are a horse-face douchebag.
ReplyDeleteIt's all PR driven. Yes, even Lupita's win (though she IS stunning).
ReplyDeleteEnty just say black. Lupita not African American she was born in Mexico and raised in Kenya and beyonce and Halle are black as well.
ReplyDelete"I think People needed to redeem itself after last year's debacle when Gwyneth Paltrow won as Most Beautiful Woman. They tweaked the category slightly which allows them to include men…"
ReplyDeletePeople didn't tweak anything. They went back to their original title. It's been Most Beautiful except for three years, '11, '12, '13 when it was Most Beautiful Woman.
AFAIK men have always been included. In fact, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and Leo DiCaprio were the coverboys in '96, '97 and '98.
I don't know how Halle Berry and Beyonce aren't "African American" according to Enty...
ReplyDeleteTrust me. They are black.
Halle's mum is white. Halle is mixed race. I find the whole one drop of blood thing offensive. I'm mixed race. I'm not black. I'm mixed race. I'm proud of both halves.
DeleteI'm multiracial, but I self-identify as black. Black is what you see, black is what you get. My daughter is half Irish and doesn't even look biracial. She's only 2 months old but when it becomes a "thing", she can call herself whatever she wants, although I'm sure she'll be proud of all her ethnicities. As it is already, I get asked on a daily basis whose kid she is.
DeleteAeol, that blows my mind that people wld ask u that! I dont know if its just where I live, but everyday everywhere i see white grandparents/parents with black and mixed race kids, black parents /grandparents with white and mixed race kids, hispanic kids with black or white parents/ grandparents. Just so common and i wldnt dream of asking whose child it is. Really. People can be so dumb and rude.
DeleteThis is one of the few times I've agreed with their "Most Beautiful" cover. She's beautiful in every way.
ReplyDeleteFor once I agree with People on this.
ReplyDeleteRe Beyonce being mixed race, please, have you seen her mother? She appears to be 75% white. Just saying.
Her mom is Creole, and clearly has very deep French roots. Have you seen Bey's nephew? Even if Julez' dad is mixed, you can tell Tina Knowles has some strong genes.
DeleteGwyneth was last year's most beautiful???? Seriously???? I totally didn't remember that.
ReplyDeletePeople = complete joke. It's all who sucks up to who. Besides, it should be call "People's 50 most popular actresses 2014" It's not the most beautiful...it's a popularity contest.
She is beautiful. I know this "honor" gets bought but how much does the "It girl" factor play into it. This entire awards season she wasn't only the one to beat she was the one to dress. Every designer wanted her and she was hands down the best dressed. I think that and buzz plays a big part.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll bite. What evidence is there that Kerry Washington had her baby 'months ago'?
ReplyDelete"People" finally gave this to someone other than Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, or Gwyneth Paltrow?! That's a shock. Those three just get rotated year after year after year.
ReplyDelete(Actually I thought it might be Jennifer Lawrence this year. Either that or one of the three usuals again.)
@fs.. simple math.. she was about 5 months along in september.. due the math.
ReplyDeleteWhy wld she pretend she didnt have baby yet??!!
DeleteI am THRILLED Lupita got it. Thankfully the most popular person right now is beautiful and liked :)
ReplyDeleteKerry announced her pregnancy the week she did SNL at the beginning of November, she was barely showing and about 4 months along, vaguely announced her due date as "Spring time". Seems to me like she should be due any day, not 'months ago'. I'll give you a couple of weeks, but not months unless you have more info.
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled to see Lupita on the cover of People as the most beautiful woman. We can argue ad nauseam about biracial, full blood, etc. Lupita is an African woman born in Mexico and raised in her parents native Kenya. No one who looks at her without knowing who she is would say she is anything but a black woman.
ReplyDeleteI'm really happy about the recognition she's getting.
Really?? This is as big of a joke as last year.
ReplyDeleteShe is just lovely. Seeing her smile makes ME smile. I imagine she must be a truly kind person based on that smile.
