How I Met Your Mother Finale - Probably Spoilers In The Comments
Last night marked the end of the run for the long running show. What I found the most interesting was the kids who are shown in each episode actually filmed the finale way back when the show first started filming to make sure they always looked the same age. I'm not going to give away anything in the post about the finale, but I am wondering what everyone thought about it or if you watched it or even care at this point. Were you satisfied? Are you going to miss the show?
Vintage, so adorable.
ReplyDeleteI'm still highly pissed about it but since they didn't ask for my input I guess it doesn't matter much. I spent many years with those people so I was hoping for a more gratifying ending. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteNever watched that show, so spoil away! Lol
ReplyDeleteI cried last night and had trouble sleeping. I've also cried this morning (showing I was WAY too invested in this show). WORST.FINALE.EVER.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe Lily was the mother the whole time!
ReplyDeleteI am beeauuutifull in every single way!
ReplyDeleteTed Mosby: tells his kids about all the women he slept with when he promised a story about he met their sainted, dead mother. Master troll.
ReplyDeleteTwo years too late. Way past it's sell by date but kudos for having the cajones to kill off the mom .
ReplyDeleteWords can't bring me down....
ReplyDeleteYou are beautiful!
DeleteWho's the mother?
ReplyDeleteYeah I noticed that too, they knew how it was going to end from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteI was pissed, the last few minutes seemed rush. Without giving much away I will say Robin/Barney, enuff said. The voice at the end was not Bob Saget's which was dumb. For last episodes it left alot to be desired.
The most over rated comedy ever. Forced humour every time I've had the misfortune to come across it. Mind, I never got Seinfeld either so maybe my opinion is not worth much.
ReplyDeleteDON'T YOU BRING ME DOWN TODAY!
ReplyDeleteIN EVERY SINGLE WAY!
DeleteNot a fan at all, I pretty much consider anything with a laugh track to not be worthy of my sense of humor. Except for Three's Company! Yes total comedy snob right here!
ReplyDeleteWhat is this show? I just watch Teletubbies
ReplyDeleteI feel for the fans of this show. Horrible finale lol
ReplyDeleteSad. Like Karen I cried and could not sleep...over a damn show.
ReplyDeleteI know! Teletubbies will do that to you sometimes!
DeleteIt was terrible. I love the show. How could you have this whole last season take place at Barney and Robins wedding just to make them divorce in the first minutes of the final.
ReplyDeleteThe finale was brilliant, they just cast the mother too perfectly. So I'm pissed off like many fans, but I still think the finale was probably perfect.
ReplyDeleteThank you, @PrincessConsuelaBananaHammock (cool name, btw)! Now I don't feel so alone.
ReplyDeleteBy discussing the ending with a couple of friends who liked it, I think I was better able to articulate what I didn't like.
The writers told us at the beginning of the series that Robin is not the mother, making most viewers never root for the Robin/Ted relationship. The relationship was flawed anyway, but we all knew he was going to have a family with someone else so why pull for them? It would be useless.
So, to kill off the mother and have Ted go after Robin when a viewer like me is still crying from finding out the mother died...it was just too fast. Let me accept that the mother is dead before you throw this relationship--which I thought I was always supposed to be completely against--in my face. Give me a chance to see Ted and Robin in 2030 and decide for myself whether they're at a place to be together instead of telling me they are.
So much all of this. I spent the entire show knowing Robin wasn't the mother and so never rooting for her and Ted (and frankly there were a lot of things about that relationship to NOT root for). Maybe if this show had ended in season 5 I would have been ok with this ending, but by season 6 I wanted to punch someone whenever the whole "Ted isn't over Robin" thing got brought up again. Like NO. ENOUGH. So then to have it end that way... ugh.
DeleteYes, yes, YES. I just feel it was supremely arrogant of the writers to insist upon their "original concept" and not even consider nine years' worth of character development. I won't watch a Carter-Bays show again. Assholes.
DeleteInstead of speaking actually about their dead mom & the love of of his life, he talks about all the women he had sex with and the kids figure out the real love of his life is "Aunt Robin". The show should be called "How I Meet Your Aunt Robin".
ReplyDeleteThe two episodes where just rushed. The thing is if your gonna jump time lines you need to do want Dawsons Creek did and do a two hour special. It did seem like the mother died then he was straight onto liking Robin again but in actually there was meant to be a 6 year gap. Did the even love the mother or was he always in love with Robin.
ReplyDeleteNever watched it, didn't find it funny the odd time I stopped on it while channel surfing, kept surfing.
ReplyDelete@Caitlin, agree that two hours would have been better. I believe that Ted was in love with the mother and devoted himself to their relationship--and I believe that he wasn't pining for Robin during that time. But the execution of these events was just poor. The audience shouldn't have to go from hearing the mother is dead to hearing that Ted has the hots for Robin within a minute of dialogue.
ReplyDeleteI have never been so pissed off at a finale. You spend an ENTIRE SEASON on one wedding & then the divorce comes right on the heels of that. The entire episode was depressing - it ruined the entire run for me; I doubt I'll even watch reruns. It should have been titled "How I Met The Placeholder With Whom I Could Have Some Kids Until The Woman With Whom I Have A Toxic Relationship Was Available!"
ReplyDeleteAnd I certainly won't be watching the spinoff!
ReplyDelete"Kids...I may change some of the details of this extended Meet Cute story over the next nine years."
ReplyDeleteOne of the worst finales ever.
I don't understand what was the point in having Bob Saget narrarate for all those years if you're just going to bring Mosby back in the finale? It's unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteI mostly cried and Barney and Robin getting divorced. We had so little time to actually become invested in the mother and then they just kind of glossed over her death and Ted's kids are all "Hey, if you wanna start banging Aunt Robin, that's cool with us." I did think the moment under the umbrella was cute, but the wrap up made me want to barf.
ReplyDeleteOh, and Barney with his baby REALLY made me cry. That was so freaking precious. I could almost ignore the horrific fucking contouring makeup they'd put on him.
Yep, Barney and Ellie was the ONLY thing I enjoyed. :-/
Delete*cried about
ReplyDeleteI never got into the show. It wasn't funny to me. I thought I would like it since Jason Segel was in it. Meh.
ReplyDeleteIt was awful. I woke up this morning hoping it had been a dream.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mind that the mother died. I kind of saw that coming. I didn't mind that Barney and Robin didn't work out because I saw that coming too. What pissed me off is that Ted went back to Robin after all that time. The chemistry they had in the first season was long gone. When ted professed his love for her for a second go-round I thought it was ridiculous. Both characters had evolved to a point where they were no longer a good fit. Then, when they pushed her dudeness to make her right for Barney, she had gone beyond the point of return for Ted's love interest. She became unlikeable. The way they did the final season, all at the wedding, then 15 years in one episode, didn't allow for Robin nor Ted to become right for each other again. He had such great chemistry with the mother, but didn't mourn for her and cheapened everything they had by Robin being the one all along. They never showed Robin reconnecting with Ted and the kids. Ted is a gigantic douche.
Hmm "he didn't mourn for her"? No, they didn't show it, but Ted's daughter clearly said "Dad, mom's been gone for SIX years; it's time." They also made it clear that he hasn't been involved with any women since her passing. I guess they could have shown him grieving but the episode was already so emotional...idk.
DeleteOh, and Robins's best chemistry was with Don, not Ted or Barney. Barney's was with Quinn and Ted's was obviously with Tracy. And Marshall and Lily...clearly meant for each other from the beginning but WTF? Was the entire drawn out season with him stuck in the car with Sherri Sheppard because Jason Segal was in rehab? They barely needed to be a part of the last episode. Shitty writing for a show that excelled at it for so long.
ReplyDeleteA few weeks ago - in anticipation of the finale - I read up on a lot of blogs and websites devoted to HIMYM, and quite a few people were predicting the precise scenario that played out in the last episode. Remember, the actors who played the kids filmed their portion of the episode about eight years ago; you have to figure that they told someone who told someone, etc. Anyway, so I wasn't surprised. And I had a little while to get used to the idea...
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree the ending made Ted look heartless for going after Robin again because there was a huge piece missing
ReplyDeleteThe finale would have made sense three or four years ago, when the characters were at the point where such an extension and an ending would have felt organic.
ReplyDeleteBut as the show turned into a huge hit and CBS wanted the producers to produce as many episodes as possible, they built more seasons with either:
a) filler material, that looked like filler material from day one (Zoey, various Lily-Marshall feuds)
b) interesting character development, that would be ultimately negated by the finale (everything involving Barney maturing)
On TVline, people were totally up in arms last night!
ReplyDeletePeople claiming that "the Mother" was just a seat filler until Ted could get back with Robin. And ran staight to her. He mourned for 6 years.
I don't agree. I think Ted loved the Mother truly and deeply, and they had a wonderful life, and sadly, just like in life, she became ill and sadly passed away. He was able to have the life he really wanted, (family, wife kids)meanwhile Robin was able to travel the world and have a career.
I was sad about Barney and Robin, but the writing was on the wall during the wedding weekend. And Barney did live up to his one vow to Robin, always to tell her the truth. I think he did change for Robin, and tried to be that guy for her, but in the end, he just couldn't, but loved her enough to be honest.
It was sad to see him revert back to horndog Barney and that made him seem desperate. and at the goodbye apartment party, Robin really summed it all up. People change, life changes and friendships change, but you always do remain friends.
But #31 changed Barney's life. I just wish they showed more sceenes with Barney and bebeh.
Of course Marshall and Lilly stayed together.. they are Marshmellow and Lilly Pad biches! LOL
The Mother (aka Tracy) she did meet everyone singly and really impacted their lives, so she fit in easily to the group. She was different, and special, and Lilly totally called it when Ted called her for a date. Lilly has always been in tune with Ted and knew him best.
Back to Ted and the Mother. Since her true love died, she realized how very lucky she was to find real love again with Ted. And if she didn't die, they totally would have passed the 'front porch' test. But life has a way of changing things.
I think while Ted was talking to the kids and recounting things that happened to the 'aunts and uncles' who clearly love the kids as well.. he began to remember Robin fondly, and the kids caught that. Of course they want their Dad happy, and why not with someone he clearly cares for.
Ted is the one who found the locket for Robin, and Robin said maybe she should be marrying Ted, the timing for them was always off, and this time around it was right.
Worst ending of a show ever? No. Best..no. But I did get where they were going and where they ended.
I think the more time that passes, people will think of it differently and change their minds.
Or.. they will be too busy burning their DVD's of the show ;)
JMHO on it gang.
I didn't hate it, I loved the scene when Barney sees his daughter for the first time, and falls in love. I was crying like a baby. The 10 years Ted was with the mother were definitely glossed over, and it was all crammed into the one hour, so compare that to the 9 years invested into watching the series, and it did feel like we were ripped off. But I thought it was a very emotional episode. If they had just ended it without him ending up with Robin, maybe people would have felt differently? I thought it was really sad, but I really did like how they showed scenes throughout the years of how their lives were progressing.
ReplyDeleteNow, supposedly they are doing "How I Met Your Dad" which I think is going to bomb.
I've only ever watched this show occasionally from time to time over the years-it generally was far to corny and cutesy for my tastes-but I watched every second of last night's finally and it was AWESOME. I completely fell in love with the woman Ted ended up marrying (how chill funny and sweet was she?) and I think she was well worth the wait :) I also shed more than a few tears-ok, I wept-when Barney was cradling his brand new baby girl and said what he did to her (hey, if ppl don't want to know what happened yet then they shouldn't be reading this post!), and I loved that Ted clearly had such a great relationship with his kids-though I briefly cried again when they revealed just how young they were when their mom passed :(
ReplyDeleteA couple things that perplexed me though: 1. Why did they make such a show of Marshall & Lily having three kids but never show them on camera?? 2. I don't mind that Ted went to Robin at the end-I actually thought they way they did it was VERY sweet (the dogs! lol) but why ever have Robin & Barney marry in the first place? Seemed like a wasted plot line...
I think my favorite part though was at the credits when they froze on an image of each cast member from the first season :) They all had such baby faces! It really made you realize just how long this show had been on. All in all I thought the finale was very, very well done.
The ending was set up in the pilot. Lily said to Ted and Barney "you can't hook up with Robin unless you marry her"
ReplyDeleteMy question is: what happens next? Barney & Robin broke up because of her constant travel, how on earth is that going to work out with Ted? Is she going to give up her career for him? All I can see in their future is fighting and another breakup.
ReplyDeleteSomeone wondered if 'How I Met Your Father' will be #31 and Barney, but I can't imagine how that would work.
I figured if Robin made it so big as an globe-trotting anchor, maybe she had had enough and wanted to settle down in NYC again. Being famous and talented, she could write her own ticket at that point and maybe do something like GMA.
DeleteI love HIMYM and NPH so very much. However, there were some lackluster seasons. Overall, HIMYM will always be like an old childhood friend you recently reunited with: you remember everything you once loved about them, but they've picked up some irritating habits somewhere along the way. I got kind of emotional at times, I'll admit, it's hard to let go of any series you have invested your time and heart into. In totality, HIMYM was such a solid and wonderful show. And it's so HARD to come by good comedy sitcoms that all ages can truly enjoy! I can't even tell you how many times I have dropped HIMYM lines and began chats about the series with strangers while waiting in lines or waiting rooms. Well played through and through. I might even say legendary!!!
ReplyDeleteSTRAY BULLETS:
"Canada? I've literally never heard of it!" Great opening! Love it.
HIMYM GANG: "Once you're in you're in for life!" Intrigued by this. They'd definitely rep the color blue (lolz) but what would their name be?
I love how Lily was Knoping out over keeping everyone together. Miss Leslie. Don't even want to think about her leaving
I love how Barney is now serving up
women with Daddy Issues in a totally different context. He's the comedy version of Troy on Nip/Tuck. Let's hope he is a better dad and is actually a changed man for good.
I love how they went all "Red Violin" over the "Yellow Umbrella"-Ella-Ella-eh-ehhhhhh!!! (Is there a HIMYM-Ri Ri mashup out there yet btw?! If not, looks like we just found ROBIN SPARKLESher next hit song!
I always knew he'd end up with Aunt Robin. Creepy there sorry. I knew that was the case when I saw the wedding dress they out her in. Times that by 10 when you recall Robin's stunning dress. If shading brides on their wedding day were a contest, Robin just tore that fuckin tiara straight off Pipa's head! As if The Mother would have brought Robin to the bar dressed like that! Bitch would throw her down the river!! Thanks to the show and the fans for years of laughs and great stories.
Boo, back to work but one more parting sentiment:
HIMYM will always be building SANDCASTLES IN THE SAND of my heart. <3
Oh and there were babies suddenly flying all over the finale too. Mom, did you infiltrate their writing team? I'm on to you.
Delete@mooshki I bet her career settled down to a 'nightly news' type thing. She had a gaggle of doggies, just like in the first show.
ReplyDeleteI understand everyone's disappointment about the treatment of Ted, the Mother and Robin. But when you really look at the narrative driving the entire show, it is in my opinion, the ONLY LOGICAL sway the show could have ended. She was always the one and she was always under his nose the whole time. I am not saying it was not a dick move, but even his kids could pick up on that. Of course there were sloppy parts of the finale, but the show's writing has been that way for a while now. I try to remember the good times and there were many.
ReplyDeleteI figure I'll get into this show when it's on Nick at Nite like I did with Everybody Loves Raymond.
ReplyDeleteJesus Christ. It's a fucking tv show and people can't sleep over the ending? Um, reality much?
ReplyDeleteHated it. Hated it, hated it, hated it. Never gonna accept it. In fact, I rewound and watched to the point where he met Tracy and then I stopped it and deleted it. That's how it ended. La la la la la.
ReplyDeleteHa! I said the same thing somewhere else today. Robin and Barney get married and Ted meets Tracy. Happily ever after for all...THE END. :-)
DeleteI absolutely love this show but I couldn't get through this last season. It was just so horrible, I watched a few episodes but couldn't give it more than that. I'm glad I didn't watch the finale, it would have only let me down further.
ReplyDeleteJSierra - agree that the last season totally sucked and was stupid concept. That being said you really have to watch the finale just to see what happens. I thought it ended appropriately.

ReplyDelete"Barney & Robin broke up because of her constant travel, how on earth is that going to work out with Ted? Is she going to give up her career for him?"
ReplyDeleteIt looked like from the dogs that Robin had been back in New York long enough to have a bunch of ex-boyfriends.
Hated the finale! Tracy dies...really...stupid and then he goes back to Robin?
ReplyDeleteI loved the chemistry between Ted and Tracy and the scene with Barney and his daughter was the best, everything else...uh...no.
This show and it's premise were always stupid to me and why was Bob Saget the older dad? Never watched the show and glad I saved my time. Everyone pretty much knew the mother was dead.
ReplyDelete
