#3 - This C list movie actress who came into her A list name recognition through a hit television show no longer on the air has always thought very highly of herself. But this is ridiculous, and shows you what an idiot she is. When she sees a homeless person on the street asking for money she stops and gives them her autograph and tells them to sell it on e-bay. I assume she thinks all homeless people have some type of wireless laptop they carry around with them and a way to collect the money.

Not a STC fan so I am not aware of how eager the actual people who watched it are.

ReplyDeleteI think even in 2009 SATC stars had had their day and their autographs wouldn't have gone for too much (film bumps aside). It's vaguely amusing in a naive sort of way.

ReplyDeleteShe doesn't owe them anything. I would never give money to homeless people. That's dangerous business. Psychotic drug addicts just aren't first on my list of where I want my money to go. They're mostly men too. Men who have caused beyond a lifetime of harm to women and children. Other men should help them.
ReplyDeleteThis might make me a bad person but I really don't ever give to homeless people I've seen around here anymore. Sure, I used to give food from the end of my shift when I managed at Long John Silver's to the homeless shelter on my way home, but the "homeless" and "Needy" we have here are at the same spots everyday (the same people, too) at the exit of the Supercenter. Once I saw them leave in an Escalade, I decided it's probably a scam. It might hurt people really in need but I can't be sure who are the ones who need it and who are the ones just not wanting to get a real job.
ReplyDeleteI've also had one person who said they needed food turn down completely sealed food I got out of my grocery bag and say they need the money instead. I told him good luck, then drove off. I mean if you are really starving and a person offers you a sealed bag of chips, a foot long deli sandwich and a two liter of Mt. Dew, are you going to turn it down and tell them to just give you cash instead?
I've had a similar experience @Rowdy - giving food to someone being for money 'for food,' only to see them literally throw it away immediately (which irked me - I had intended it for me, and would happily have kept it!).
DeleteI've also seen junkies buying gear with dollar coins - from begging. And drug dealers implement 'no coin' policies due to the prevalence of this.
I think ultimately it is far better to give through reputable organisations.

ReplyDeleteI have no problem giving food and drinks to the homeless, but not money. I think the autograph thing is brilliant. If she didn't care at all, she would just ignore them. At least she's giving them something to sell.

ReplyDeleteI worked in a restaurant in Knightsbridge London. Every evening we packed up all the food & either delivered it to various homeless shelters, or their representatives collected it. I will always buy people a coffee or burger. No money though. I did once though.
ReplyDeleteI gave a man some money when we lived in San Francisco. I'd had a martini or two. Anyway he chased me up the road & said " I don't think you meant to give me this". I'd given him $100 . He really didn't have to do that. ( except the baby sitter would have been really pissed off.)
I admired him.
@skippy, I live in San Francisco and almost never give money. But sometimes there's something about someone that just tugs at my heartstrings ... maybe when I walk past them when they're asking for money - I always respond and I'm always polite when I decline - and after I've said no they tell me to have a nice day, or say "god bless you" in such a sincere and friendly tone that I just melt.
