Blind Item #9 - Old Hollywood Blind

She's one of the most recognizable faces of classic Hollywood, but back when she was on the verge of A+ list stardom, she slept with many a producer to get a role. One of these casual encounters resulted in a surprise pregnancy, which she ended up terminating. That might explain why she couldn't have kids.

  1. Didn't she have a whole bunch of abortions that messed up her parts?

    1. Maybe that's why she hated wire hangers so much? I know, I know, I'll show myself out.

    1. Heather - several of these 'blind' old hollywood items aren't really blind - a lot of references to Crawford having an abortion and that is reason why she was unable to have children.

  8. Sterling, Lifetime ban, $2.5mill fine, & commish says he will do everything in his power to have NBA Board Of Directors force a sale of the franchise. Said NBA Constitution requires a 3/4 vote to remove an owner. He has to have those votes in his pocket to be so vehement about the situation.

Another interesting fact is that this happens shortly after this commish took over from David Stern.

    2. @SusieQ, I like where you're going with this. Although Mmmbop was a mega hit for them, their subsequent albums haven't matched that early success. Don't think Hanson has the cash to buy a basketball team.

      (sorry. it was right there)

  10. Fits both Crawford & Monroe, but also many others.

  11. Count- what's interesting about the Sterling situation is he's been pulling racial shenanigans for years (I.e. Not renting apartments to non-whites, sued for like $7M for discrimination, etc.) Took the press getting a hold of that recording for the NBA to take action.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Definitely not Ava Gardner. She got pregnant by Frank Sinatra twice and terminated. Not a "couldn't have kids" scenario.

    Monroe fits better.

  13. This I fear will cause a shitstorm but I am going to throw it out there. First of all, by NO MEANS do I support anything Sterling said. But this was a taped private conversation. What happened to freedom of speech, as vile as his speech was? Not renting apartments to non whites, absolutely deserves a lawsuit but I feel when someone has ignorant things to say, it's their right no matter how stupid. I don't think paying a fine is fair. However, once again, I want to make it clear I do not agree with what he said, just that he has the freedom to speak whatever spews out unless of course he was threatening a life or harming someone.

    1. Sterling consented to being taped.

    2. He still has Freedom of Speech, but that doesn't mean there aren't consequences.

  14. Actually several stars fit: yes, Joan Crawford, but also Barbara Stanwyck and, if memory serves, Bette Davis.

  15. SaintsFan- I hear you about he freedom of speech bit. The issue Sterling has is a morality clause and other clauses in his contract with the NBA that basically lets the NBA dole out whatever punishment it sees fit, whenever and for whatever. If he was any other guy, he'd just piss people off, but not be fined, suspended, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  16. No. No one has the. 'Right' to be a spiteful, prejudiced ignoramus in this day and age. Being who he is, he has the ability to influence many others and his views need to be eradicated, not protected. Spreading hate is not what free speech is for.

  19. I suppose the thing is being in the NBA or any professional sports league is joining any club, all the teams are subject to the same rules presumably and it includes rules about how "members"/owners are to act or at least not to act harmful to the league aka Club. The TV rights where all the money is is a contract with everyone in the league and bad PR hurts the whole league.

On the other hand I share your qualms SaintsFan even if you are disgusted by what he says, I think one has to support his right to say what ever he wants IN PRIVATE or do you end up eroding free speech for everyone. What is next thought crimes? Have we really established if he gave permission for the girlfriend to be recording him. And good point, he had more blatant and very public examples of his racism but the NBA did not feel necessary to act at those times?

In any event I am sure the lawyers will be the next phase of this saga.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @SaintsFan, I totally get what you're saying, however - a racist can spew his speech anywhere, anytime, but that doesn't mean there won't be repercussions. You just can't say something incredibly stupid things like this and not expect something to happen:

"I wanna know why you think you can coach these niggers."

"That's because of all the blacks in this building, they smell, they're not clean."

"Is she one of those black people that stink? [...] Just evict the bitch."

"According to former general manger Elgin Baylor, Sterling envisioned a "Southern Plantation type structure" for the Clippers, one in which, as he allegedly put it to Baylor, "poor black boys from the South" played for a white head coach."

  24. Oh I see Candyland, I figure there was some rules that governed all owners which they agree to when they become part of the league.

I am sorry Shot in the Dark you have a right to free speech certainly in private. You want to start punishing people with the courts and police who don't agree with you for things they say in private, then you are getting on the Fascist train. Don't want that train stopping here.

We have ways to socially deal with racists unless they come into the purview of the laws that currently exist such as you have a right to free speech in public so long as it does not incite violence or hatred.

Racists come in all colours and ethnicities so one would hope that all of them are subject to the same social censure. I am sure we are going to get some anti-semitic statements in reaction to Mr. Sterling and two wrongs do not make a right.

  28. I totally accept the counter argument to mine on free speech, but we're not talking about thought police exactly. I'm saying think what you like, just understand that sort of stuff needs to stay in your head, not come out of your mouth. I guess I'd have an easier time standing up for his right to free speech if all people who talked like him were also caught and held under a spotlight. I also get concerned about what could constitute private speech as well,... for example, would private lessons be considered private / protected?
Sorry not trying to be argumentative, but maybe here isn't the right place to debate. We come for the gossip, sh!ts and giggles, right? : )

  30. Here's where we are in terms of race in America in an easy to understand example and appropriate for this site: A movie titled "White Men Can't Jump" is considered a classic by many and was a huge hit. If someone made a film called "Black Men Can't Swim" it would be considered racist.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Um yeah...it's because of the context of the society in which we live. Of course sayings etc that poke fun at a group that has been opressed, discriminated against, the subject of violence etc will be more offencive than that directed at those that dominate said society. Not to mention that swimming rates are lower for blacks for a variety of reasons and many black children drown each year while swimming. Just sayin

      Delete
    2. It's the Dr Laura argument.

@Rowdy, "white men can't jump" is a play on words within the context of the movie. There's no way you could make "Black Men Can't Swim" a sardonic view of race relations and communication.

      Well, maybe Quentin Tarantino could...

  31. @saintsfan, he wasn't arrested for saying those things so his right to freedom of speech wasn't trampled on. Freedom of speech only protects a person from government interference, not from the public reacting to any idiotic statements they may make.

    1. Thank you, Onyx. So many people think freedom of speech means they can spew whatever rubbish they want with no repercussions whatsoever.
That is NOT what it means.
The government allows freedom of speech. The private sector is under no such obligation.

  32. @Candyland: Back in the day, NBA was always suspected of shenanigans. From the Knicks winning the Patrick Ewing lottery to covering up drug abuse in the 70's. Sterling has been an owner since 1980, who knows what skeletons in the closet he knows of. With the change in commissioners, anything he pulls out of his bag of tricks, they can say, "That was the old guy, this is a new NBA under Adam Silver."

P.S. In Canada, it is legal to discriminate against renters. "FOR RENT - MUSLIMS ONLY"

@SaintsFan: There is freedom of speech. Sterling is in no fear of criminal charges. The problem is if the public, and more importantly sponsors, get pissed, yer fucked.

@Candyland: Everything I've read said the only way a franchise can be taken is if they can't pay their bills. There must be something in the NBA Constitution about "conduct detrimental to the league" and all the calls from sponsors threatening to pull out got Silver to call around and gauge support for invoking the clause.

@ShotInTheDark: Guy has the right to whatever opinion he wants to have. You either have free speech or censorship, there is no in between. It is well worth it to have morons out themselves as assholes, so others can use it for good. It is also a good example for your kids. Point to the TV screen and say, "see what happens when you have stupid beliefs".

@7of11: Elgin Baylor was a shit GM, likely just a puppet for penny pinching Sterling. Also, dude was the GM for 22 years. He certainly didn't complain about racism or agism while he was cashing those paychecks, that is why he lost his sour grapes lawsuit.

P.S. Guy on WFAN said he talked to someone that would know and it is very vague if the NBA can remove an owner. Says it could wind up being an anti trust suit.

  34. Either Joan or Marilyn. Neither could have kids.

  35. Freedom of speech just means the government can't punish you for speaking out. Everyone else has the right to act on what you say. (Within parameters of the law)

  36. Monroe - because she always attributed infertility to health conditions like endometriosis. Joan's alleged abortions are legendary right?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Monroe's abortions are well noted though. I've read too many books about her.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is sooo frustrating...saying "couldn't have kids" did not mean she didn't get pregnant !!!!means she had a botched abortion...which is sadly toooo many of these women....
Marilyn suffered from miscarriage s (multiple)due to in retrospect..her drinking and drug use most likely..it is not HER!!!!!!

Joan Crawford wa a friggin lesbian.

It is Ava Gardner....do some research

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's Joan Crawford. She had a secret marriage to Wallace Beery and became pregnant. the studio was not happy - she aborted the child and the marriage ended. Please do not ask my source - I read this somewhere, sometime.

  40. Count, your point 1 to me: so, it's a "pot meet kettle" sort of thing? That adds a little more controversy to mix!

Your point to me 2, I think I just read somewhere if the NBA gets either 2/3 or 3/4 of votes among all owners (forget which), I think they can rescind his ownership.

    The plot thickens.

  41. see: dixie chicks circa "you have the right to say whatever you want, but not everyone has to agree with it and everyone elsa can respond to your FREE SPEECH my turning on you just as quickly as they raised you up!! dixie chicks NEVER recovered from bashing prez bush. the band has all but disbanded, the tour all but combusted.. yes you can say what you want but you also get the backlash that comes with free speech
i think a quote back then was something like
"you have the right to free speech and all that comes with it"
    i will sit down now

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Candyland: Not pot/kettle. They have a chance to cut one of the worst owners in sports, with no real consequences aside from possible legal fees, so they are jumping on it.

Commissioner said 3/4 vote is needed, but when asked what part of the NBA Constitution gave then authority to do it, he said the lawyers would have to explain that, and I never heard an explanation. I figure that means the lawyers will explain it in court, if it comes down to it.

  43. Going with Monroe.

    ReplyDelete
  44. This was so common before abortion was legal that I would say this is the only time when "all of them" was a realistic answer.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This could be anyone from Marilyn Monroe to Betty Boop. Most of the actresses back then got illegal abortions, so the lady parts could be messed up pretty bad.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The problem is that he makes economic, financial, team development, organizational decisions (cf Elgin Baylor lawsuit) that are based on his racist views. He's used the Clippers in reflection of that mindset, and folks have known it in the NBA: including scuttling the team to make money but not allow it to win: he lined his pockets with the NBA but did not make a product or organization that the NBA liked/wanted. That's something the owners have known and will now rectify.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It could be Jane Russell, she had an abortion early in her career which left her infertile and she became very anti-abortion because of it. It's all very well documented, but as someone else said, it could be pretty much anyone.

  48. Rock Hudson. JK. I'm thinking Liz Taylor. Only thing is, wouldn't Liz get roles w/o sleeping with Producers? Or did she fall for their scare tactics ? 2nd guess is Marilyn.

As soon as I read this I thought of Marilyn. Read any of her biographies and you will see this information, sometimes thinly disguised, and sometimes not at all.
