Isn't Aretha too modern to be considered old Hollywood, being she came to prominence in 1960?
Something about the term "incestuous relationship" bothers me it connotes that one party had a choice in the matter and when you are a minor you don't have a "real choice".
veee- not sure why it is old hollywood anyway if Aretha. She really isn't old hollywood- it should just have described an A+ singer from 50's or 60's. If truly 'old hollywood' singer/actress then Aretha doesn't work.
Chinatown lives. I remember hearing aon NPR a southern pol refer to "the fine tradition of intergenerational intercourse." Took my brain a bit to catch up to what the old perv was advocating.
Aretha Franklin was actually 12 when she had her first child, and 14 when she had her second. Her mother left the family when she was six and she remained with her father and siblings and apparently stepped into the mom role in the family.
I cannot imagine what it's like to give birth to a child at age 12 and be a mother of two kids by age 14.
The sanctimonious holier than thou preachers/ministers mostly seem to have dodgy secret lives. Just saying. It must have been so traumatic for Aretha. Poor kid.
Unfortunately this is a common occurrence. I read in a sociology book that mother son incest is common in Japan. In their society sex is an antidote for stress and it is the mother's job to help the children. The book is Understanding Japan Through The Eyes of Christian Faith.
Come on, guys. While the Aretha rumor may in fact be true, we have left the original BI way behind. Aretha can in no way be considered Old Hollywood, nor can Janet Jackson. Old Hollywood is 1920-1960, and means the BI subject acted in movies. Getting us back on track, while Judy Garland is certainly Old Hollywood, her father died when she was 13, I believe, and Liza, her first-born, looks like a carbon-copy of Vincente Minnelli (poor thing). Diana Ross is also not Old Hollywood, and the father of her first child was Berry Gordy. As for Loretta Lynn, how she could be considered Old Hollywood is beyond me. So where are the rest of my Hollywood Babylon peeps?
Joe: Enty and his interns aren't exacting on how they categorize these BI's. "Old Hollywood" is a broad category that could include a lot of stuff from any sort of time frame. I attribute it to the drinking.
