Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial Begins

In the first day of testimony in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial, his neighbor, Michelle Burger, testified that she heard blood curdling screams followed by gunshots coming from Pistorius' house.

"Just after 3, I woke up from a woman's terrible screams. Then I also heard a man screaming for help. Three times he yelled for help."

The woman was cross-examined much of the afternoon by Pistorius' attorney and because of some translation difficulties she sounded much less sure than she probably would have otherwise. The court translator sucked and it made the woman seem like she wasn't sure about her testimony.

Burger said that only fear your life could be in danger would produce screams like the ones she heard that night. Pistorius is accused of killing his girlfriend. He admits killing her but says he thought she was a burglar hiding behind his bathroom door when he shot through the door and killed her.

When Burger was asked by the lawyer for Pistorius whether she could have confused the gun shots with a cricket bat she said, "Most South Africans know the sounds of gun shots. We hear the every day."

The woman was a rock. She is back on the stand tomorrow morning.

  5. Remember when the sun radaited outta Lance Armstrong's butt; same with Oscar - hero fallen.
That he's dating a woman under her 20's in the midst of this, to me tells further to his character. To date anyone during this - you think he'd be concentrating on his trail - not some young puss.
It's a sad ending for his incredible life story, saddest for the victim. It will be a further tragedy if he's found innocent, which is my prediction.

  6. I wonder if he'll celebrate his not guilty verdict by eating at IHOP

  7. Pistorius wacked her, said so himself, but the question is why? Maybe she knew something about him that he didn't want to get out. Maybe she was blackmailing him into marraige. Anyway, if he gets away with this he will have quite a spring in his step.

  9. I just think Oscar has an uncontrollable temper. He was jealous she spoke to an ex a day or two earlier, they fought about it, he became filled with uncontrollable rage and shot her, now lives to regret it.

@PeaceLoveVizsla - I heard that too. I also heard the ex wanted her back and she'd 'been caught' smiling at him or something. Pistorius is guilty but whether or not they will let one of their much-loved sportsmen go to jail is another matter. He has a very violent temper and told another former girlfriend that HE'D decide when their relationship was over, not her (read that somewhere, but I can't recall where).

The news we get over here is dicey at best (lots of Chinese Whispers), but -

On one network's bulletin I heard this exact same story; yet on another, it was reported that the witness lived in another housing development some 200m away, with several houses in between.

Not a major thing in the wider scale, but still ... if they stuff up that minor point, what can be believed about the media coverage?
