Sure, it is a singing competition. Sure, the contestants are required to actually sing the songs they are performing, but they are not out Jennifer Lopez who would never be able to actually compete on the show she is judging. Just like Paula Abdul before her, Jennifer Lopez lip synchs all of her performances on American Idol and will continue to do so because she is a lousy singer who knows she will look like an idiot if she tries to sing live. See, when you lip synch you can say there was a reason she had to do it whether it is production or a sore throat or time constraints or a million other excuses. When you sing live, it doesn't matter what excuse you come up with, the only thing people remember and play all over the internet is where you sound like crap. Real singers should be the judges on the show. How about taking some people who finished in the top 3 of Idol and have them be judges on the show. How can Jennifer Lopez judge and give advice on something she can't even do on our own. She would not even make it to Hollywood week.

@baconranch +10. I've said that all along. It's not gonna shatter my world if I find out those two can't sing. I could figure that out. What would be insane is if it was, say, Diana Ross, patsy cline, Dolly Parton....someone along those lines who had a solid career and whatnot. These two and the majority of their peers? Really not a big deal nor surprising.

ReplyDelete@Bacon, agree it would be no big deal now if either of those two were outed, but when the blind came out they were much bigger stars, the Beyoncés and Rhiannas of the day. Jennifer had Puffy's explicit endorsement, and he was also huge at the time - the Jay-Z of the day.
Finally, the original MV blind said that MV was contemptuous towards the less attractive lady who provided the voice. Sounds a lot like J-Lo. Britney appears to be stupid, but sweet.

I am not a JLo worshipper, but here are a few words in her defense. Regardless of whether you think she can sing or not, she is a very fine judge of talent on the show — one of the best they've ever had. In the performance from last night that you mention, she began with an intro where she was singing into a microphone (not lip synching) along with some female backup singers. She was singing LIVE and they were harmonizing and she sounded very good to me. Tight harmonies don't work if someone is off pitch or something. After that intro, she moved to center stage to perform her new song — that's when the lip synching began. She was doing some vigorous choreographed dancing, so it made sense that she used a pre-recorded track for that part of the vocal.

I don't think she was lip synching when they were all on the stairs singing harmonies. The reason I don't think that? Her voice sounded thin and pitchy.
Well fox did resign her, she can't and never could actually sing, and the ratings for this season are the absolute lowest ever for the show. The first two seasons she was on the show the ratings dropped steadily. Yet they are giving her a lot of money again. She's making bank and they look worse than she does.

Harry Connick Jr is the only good thing about AI right now. And even he is deluded - he said that this was the most talented season ever on AI. No it isn't. Some of them have talent but none of them has star power.

I'd say she's passable in some types of roles, but any attempt at serious drama and she embarrasses herself. Too bad she can't lip synch those acting performances in. People kept saying the show last year was a disaster because of the judges, but all the drama and crap aside, the actually produced a quality top 5, and the winner (Candace glover) was one of the most talented in a while. So they did their jobs to an extent. Had it been kept to three judges I think last year would have been better. I truthfully would have loved last year to be Keith, Mariah, and Harry. That season would have turned out totally different and the judges would have had enough personality to work well off each other and enough talent to pick a good top 20

ReplyDeleteOMG I forgot about Candace Glover - love her! I was so glad she won after everybody just dismissed her. Remember how they would ask the judges for their top 3 and I think she was only on one judge's list, and third at that. Sure showed THEM!
Couple of things-I've heard JLo sing w/o backing live. It wasn't horrible, but mostly just weak. Think Selena Gomez. Both are in and out of tune, have pleasant voices, no range and no power. HOWEVER, JLo is a great performer, regardless of your feeling of her. She has tons of charisma and is of course, beautiful. Her acting isn't too great, (no, really?), but I also admire her attitude and hustle. Better than some great singers. As for AI, don't blame JLo because this is the shit format they want.

She's obviously a quick study, though, and she's musical.
The MV incident took place long ago. Mark Anthony may be a turd, but he has a great voice, and I think Jennifer took advantage of that and finally learned how to sing properly -breathing, phrasing, enunciation, and projection.
I would only fault people for lip synching if they are trying to hide a lack of talent or preparation. Audiences expect a lot, and if the performer tried dancing and singing without the lip synch, both the singing and the dancing would suffer. Whatever else you can say about J Lo, she gives her fans their moneys-worth at a show.
@marina yes I do remember that. Only Mariah Carey had her as top 3 and she seemed shocked that none of the other judges had her in their top 3. She kind of flew under the radar because she wasn't flashy or over the top, she just sang the hell out of her songs every week. But she was probably one the top 3 best singers to ever win that show. Along with Kelly and Carrie.
