A To D List - The Hierarchy

This is part one of a continuing series this weekend that will set to define A-D list and the people in the public eye and how they should be defined. Before getting to specific individuals this is a general overview on lists.

Trying to define A to D list is hard, but not impossible. The big problem is that careers are always in flux and things that hold true when a blind is written or a description of an actor might not be the case when it is read years later. Back in 2008 I wrote Kirsten Dunst was an A lister. Is she now? Nope. I think since the site started there have been changes in television with the advent of sites like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon  producing original content. Should those be given less weight because they are not on network television?

There has also been an increase in reality shows to the point where I consider them a genre unto their own. If I call someone an A list reality star it does not mean they are an A lister in the true sense of the word. There is a hierarchy and what I wrote back in 2008 about the true A listers is still what I believe today.

“In my mind, A list is someone who can open a mainstream film all by themselves. When I say mainstream, I mean a film that opens in the 1000+ screen category. I think that is the one true measurement of whether someone is A list or not. The question should be, am I interested in going to see this movie because so and so is in it and I don't care what the movie is about.”

CATEGORIES IN ORDER OF HIERARCHY:
MOVIES
NETWORK TELEVISION
CABLE TELEVISION
OTHER PROVIDER TELEVISION
REALITY
CELEBRITY

There is already a flaw within this list though. You can be Jay-Z, who is an A+ list celebrity and should not be at the bottom of the list. You could refer to him as a musician and because that is a talent should be moved higher in the list and leave celebrities to someone like Paris Hilton or Courtney Stodden.

Where would you place Jay-Z though? Movies are highest on the list because they generally get paid the most. Brad Pitt makes more per movie than Ashton Kutcher gets for an entire season on Two And A Half Men. It’s close, but Brad wins. Plus, the Academy Awards are watched by people all over the world and Emmy Awards, not so much. A popular television show in the US might not be popular in the rest of the world but a movie generally has more appeal worldwide.

Taylor Swift made more money than all but a handful of entertainment people last year. She is known worldwide and has a skill other than just being famous. You might not like her or her music, but that is not the point when defining the list. There are lots of people I dislike, but you have to recognize where they rank in things.

What I want to do is to create a new category called Entertainer. This would cover people in the musical fields some stand up comedians and even DJ’s like Tiesto and athletes. They are all entertainers. In the hierarchy I would still place them beneath movies but above network television. The actors on television shows who make as much as the highest paid entertainers are few and far between.

That would mean that the designation of celebrity would be reserved for those who are not a participant in any of the other categories. Kevin Federline is a great example. With the exception of a couple of visits to reality shows he is someone who is famous because he is famous. He married Britney Spears and has been famous since. Other than producing babies at a prolific rate he has no other skill so makes the perfect “celebrity.” So, you ask, how would you classify Paris Hilton? She has been an entertainer. She has been in movies. She has been on reality shows.

I would describe her as a former A list reality star who appeared on multiple reality shows and is currently a B list celebrity we all love to hate. I would skip the singing part because I like to forget about it and the more narrow you make a description, the easier the blind is to figure out. There has to be some guessing.

So, the new hierarchy looks like this:

MOVIES
ENTERTAINERS
NETWORK TELEVISION
CABLE TELEVISION
OTHER PROVIDER TELEVISION
REALITY
CELEBRITY

Now that the hierarchy has been established I want to take a brief look at each of the categories and break them down further.

MOVIES
General Release
Horror
Limited Release/Art House
Straight to On Demand

ENTERTAINERS

NETWORK TELEVISION
CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC
CW

CABLE TELEVISION
Pay Cable (HBO/SHOWTIME/STARZ)
Free Cable (A&E/TLC/AMC/HIST)

OTHER PROVIDER TELEVISON
(NETFLIX/AMAZON/HULU/CRACKLE)

REALITY
Network Reality
Cable Reality
Online Reality

CELEBRITY

  16. I hit publish too soon. I don't like the "entertainers" label because it's way too broad. That's going to make them even more difficult to figure out. And they have been so vague to or even so unbelievable as it is, and now we are going to get "entertainers " which could apply to so many?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am already confused but hope it will become clearer when you start to rank individuals. So, when you say A+ list would that ONLY be for a wide release movie or would you specify A+ list reality star, for example?

IMHO, US network TV used to be the barometer, but when Netflix comes out with a show that outshines any network show (and isn't even reality), that's when you know you're looking at 1990s statistics. I remember when NBC Thursday was can't miss (I was in school and had to miss) - that's the barometer we're looking at, I think.

  62. The most helpful thing is when you accompany the basic descriptions of letter rating and genre with other defining characteristics. People get pissed and contradictions run rampant when a blind subject is impossibly vague and then the reveal confirms the rating is a real stretch to boot. The A-Dlist thing is subjective and doesn't really do much for a blind item anyway. Better to use descriptive words like hot, promising, legendary, struggling etc

  67. I'm going to wait for the specific individuals list. In a way it makes sense that movies top everything else, but...

Lets get the Jay-Z example. He is not only a singer or a producer, but he is such a powerful player in the industry that it is impossible to see him as less than A+ or maybe A++.

How do you rate Angelina Jolie? She cannot open a mainstream film all by herself, but her career as whole, her A+ plus marriage, the charities, the kids, the fame, etc puts her at A++ right?

I don't agree that movies as a whole deserve a better ranking than network television, I guess that depends on the show and the movie. A show like Grey's Anatomy is popular around the world and you are not going to tell me that worldwide Lars Von Triers is more well-known than Patric Dempsey.

But in the end all we need is better written blind items. As in blind item with proper punctuation and grammar.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My theory on what happens with the blinds: ( ahem )
    The entities look at pictures
    Leaf thru the D.M.
Read what the computer tagged for the names they input( biggest train wrecks and wannabes )
IOW take 10 minutes to drink coffee and peruse said data over jelly donuts
Where the jelly plops, a blind is born.
This explains the broken sentence structure.
Once the name is excised, they only use the words without jelly smear.
Then they roll the dice marked with " the ratings" A,B,C,D,+,--
    No wonder they drink...

  75. Mark Harmon springs to mind as network A list: series after series has been created around him with durable commercial and critical success. Does that make him more "A" than Bryan Cranston on AMC? Come ON!

That said, the new definitions seem a decent effort. We could all poke holes in it with exceptions that prove the rule. Problem is, Hollywood seems to follow a rule made of exceptions. This new list doesn't account for the hot-wow-now that made Aaron Paul the top box-office draw this weekend. According to Enty, I think, he would have been A- television a week ago, but what on the big screen? B, even, based on spec? Today, an A! Not only is that a geniusly compact piece of writing, it really ought to be the strap line for this blog.

  88. ENTY STOP THE RATING BASED ON ABILITY TO OPEN A MOVIE!
    It is outdated.
The fact that you change an actors' rating based on 1 hit and the actress in the Same movie becomes, Same rating actress in ( A+) movie, is insulting.
You dismiss solid work, awards, longevity and talent, all because she's an actress and " Can't open a movie on her name, alone"
THAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR PRODUCING AND HIRING for a movie, not the reason for seeing one.
We are no longer in an age where we are going to see the next Errol Flynn.
    Update your ideas Enty.
Start rating actresses and actors based on body of work, if he is A for the hit movie then she is too.

  89. Enty forget the FX channel which has original programming like Sons of Anarchy and depending on where you live it is included in basic cable and sometimes not.

And I agree with Sean on network TV pulling ratings only barely better than cable. I have to say the only network programming I watch is Survivor, Jeopardy and this year The BlackList caught my attention but the premise has gone flat for me already. Started out with a bang going out with a whimper.

  90. Why I see movies in a theater:(ahem)
I liked the trailer. ( r.i.p. trailer voice guy) heard some gossip about it and WTF...
I have been shopping and I Need to sit down and have a drink.
I read the book and completely disagree with the casting choices and want to get vocal about it while in line and during previews.
I'm on a Blind date and its not looking good.

  91. Tina, I totally hear ya on the Blacklist, but it's still in the top rated 5 programs on TV every week. I don't think Enty will ever be able to come up with a fool-proof system :( It's too variable...the discussions about ratings will always continue and have some subjectivity to it. I do agree Entertainers category needs to be broken into a few specifics including musicians, athletes, etc.

  92. I don't think a Probate lawyer running a gossip site is any authority on this. (As outed by Jacky Jasper at HSK) Like I've said before, working for Best Picture winning Producers there is an actual list. If anything, this site has fucked everybody's "credit rating" with their mads up Bullshit.

Nobody was outed by Jacky Jasper, you moron. HSK linked to an old New York Post article, while calling it an article from the New York Daily News. If HSK was in charge of the Malaysian plane investigation, they'd probably be looking for the plane at Beijing Airport.

  93. Why I watch movies at home:( ahem)
I like the option to fool around anytime, don't use it much/ever, but I like it to be there.
Cheap snax, beer, wine, liquor and weed for those who indulge.
If it sucks, I can easily watch something else.( I don't Have to loudly proclaim " This Sucks, you can keep my money, just let me go!" I don't Have to...)
Bed is 6 to 40 feet away.( see#1 but most likely just sleepy)

  94. I hear ya Shinobi, but those are producers ratings not the elusive/confounding list of public opinion.

  95. My Movie ratings: ( ahem)
I'll go to the theater to see it. A+
I was out and it was playing and I had to wait for it to begin ( over an hour). A
I was out and it was starting soon And I heard so so about it. B+/-
Bad date filled with " Well,... what do you want to do? WDYW to see?" IOW, desperation move that does not fit above criteria... C+/-
Kid movies that aren't Pixar or the other up and comers in Animation. D
    Your Welcome

  97. Hey Knockout Jackass,

I've been rolling with Jacky Jasper personally since '97. I've known real shit from him that no one here as ever seen printed because it's too dark and too dangerous, years before he ever started his blog.

So I think I have a much better idea of what Jacky really knows, link or not.

I know the truth. Believe what you want. The probate lawyer that runs this site has been fucking up celebrity rankings for years and it affects real people's $$.

How about the ultimate blind item reveal:

    Who is Enty?
