Julia Roberts' Half-Sister Dies Of An Overdose

On Sunday afternoon Nancy Motes was found dead in her home of an apparent overdose. Nancy was the half-sister of Julia Roberts. Motes recently had lap band surgery and was often in the tabloids when she was fighting with her more famous sibling. Motes was the youngest sister of Julia and Eric Roberts and was the daughter of their mother and the aunt of Emma Roberts.

That's very sad ... Julia apparently called her fat, one of the reasons for her having the surgery. For those who are considering it - DON'T! - The side effects are atrocious (I haven't had it myself but a lady who worked for my husband did, and it wasn't pretty).

Julia skipped the Oscars luncheon yesterday to be with family, which as a noble thing for her to do (given her reputation, I wouldn't have been surprised if she had still attended).

    1. I had a lap band & it worked wonderfully for 2 years then just could no longer be regulated. I finally gave up (lots of pain & injections & nutrition issues) & had them remove the liquid. Now I'm back to trying to lose the weight - again! Ugh! - the old fashioned way. 21 lbs so far!

    2. Long time lurker, first time I've posted. I came across a book "I can make you thin" by PaulMcKenna. It comes with a hypnosis cd as well. I have lost 50 lbs sor far over six month period. You can eat what you want, he teaches you how to eat. I would have never believed it could be so easy. Try it!

  2. How sad.

I used to like Julia Roberts, but not so much after reading about her calling her sister fat and the A Low Vera t-shirt thing. She's a b* and not the good kind in Apt 23.

  3. Wow, JR called her sister fat???

RIP, you're not in pain anymore.

  4. 7 remind me of the Aloe Vera t-shirt thing. Was it something to do with stealing Danny from his girlfriend or something?

Why are people surprised by her nastiness. She's a Scorpio and some can be deadly.

    1. @Sherry, Danny Moder's wife was named Vera. He dumped her for Julia, and Julia was later seen wearing a t-shirt that said "A Low Vera". Oprah asked her about it, and she said it was private but "I stand by my t-shirt."

The Oprah Interview (Oprah says, "You knew he was married, right?")

The T-shirt (she's opening her jacket to make sure you see it)

  7. They haven't said what killed her. But Julia always fat shamed her and made nasty comments and publicly boycotted her upcoming wedding because she didn't like the guy. Not up to hrh. Standards...

  8. @Seven I stopped liking her after the t-shirt incident.

  10. I read that she didn't want to go to Nancy's wedding because she didn't like her boyfriend and she didn't want to get stuck with the bill.

Apparently she had been sending a lot of tweets directed at Julia. She should have written a tell-all book about the family.

It's a shame that she committed suicide.

I've never been a fan of Ghoulia either.

  12. Sisters can be very cruel, but whatever happened I wouldn't blame Julia. And I am not a fan.

Julia's got a good girl image, but reall she's a major skank & has & will go after married men/co-stars & cheat of her own SO's if it will help her career-she will cut a b*tch

  14. I'm sad for her that Motes had so much difficulty establishing a life and identity of her own, away from her sister's shadow. Whether or not very word she tweeted about her sister was true, clearly Motes was totally enmeshed in whatever went on in that family

  15. I am no fan of Julia, but everyone has family issues, and if you don't you're blessed. I can't pass judgement on what their relationship was like. I can understand that bringing in fame and money to an already rocky relationship is not going to help bring people closer. Throw in drug addiction, it makes things even messier.

May she rest in peace now.

  16. Between Julia's sister and Leo's brother, I think it is ridiculous to blame your more successful sibling for your failures. In both cases they helped and helped until they realized that the sibling was toxic. I bet they both made money selling dirt to the tabloids. I don't love Julia horseface Roberts, but I trust that she cut this lady out for good reason, just like Leo did with his H using brother Adam. Being related to a celeb doesn't mean you deserve a free ride.

  17. Not a JR fan, but based on personal experience with my sister (who blamed ALL her poor choices on me because she was jealous) I feel sorry for the whole family. The choices Motes made were not Julias fault, even if she is a bitch.

  18. I'm not a fan of Julia Roberts. However, anybody who's grown up with siblings knows how many cruel comments are casually told in the middle of conversations and can have a devastating effect on some persons. Roberts didn't become the highest paid actress in Hollywood and won an Oscar just to shame her "fat" sister. She was most likely an afterthought for her.

And if Nancy Motes was a drug addict, involved with other drug addicts, there's a point where you can't help people who don't want to be helped, just take advantage of a connection to get money from a famous sibling or a newspaper that would pay for dirt (true or false) about the sibling.

  19. Is it just me, or does anyone else think the sister could be the one responsible for many of the Julia Roberts blind items - and quite possibly a commenter on this site? I am one of the many who started looking at Julia differently when she wore the "A Low Vera" shirt. However, before then I never heard a bad word about her. Just a thought...

Whatever the case, it is very sad to see that this tormented young woman chose to take her life. May she rest in peace and if the family is as dysfunctional as it appears, I pray they all get some help!

@Pink Palace - At a guess, you probably never heard anything bad about Julia because social media and blogs weren't really around when she was at the height of her success. And you wouldn't have been likely to read anything about her in print because magazines would have been too scared to print anything ... unless it was a blind item. But her being a big meanie is well-known within the industry and people talk.

As for whether or sister commented ... it's possible ... I believe there are a few commenters on here with 'tenous connections' to various celebs that are discussed.

  24. @ TV Junkie...I lost 105lbs the old fashioned way. It took a while, but it was/is soooooo worth it. Keep at it!!!

I wonder what kind of relationship she had with Eric? I know Eric and Julia never really acknowledged each other positively until relatively recently...was it the same with Nancy? Could she have just felt like the ugly, useless one compared to her famous brother, sister and niece? I can't imagine what it would be like to be surrounded by that.

  25. I'm not a fan of Julia but if you read her sister's unhinged Twitter comments from the last few weeks, you have to believe this went beyond Julia calling the woman "fat." I read the comments last night and this woman definitely had severe mental issues. Anyone who has ever had a toxic/troubled/addicted sibling sometimes has to make the very difficult choice to stay hell and far away. You can go through life being verbally attacked like that forever.

Christ, I just defended Julia Roberts. That's how batshit the Tweets are.

  27. I literally just need to focus on myself and get back to being a happy guy like I was when I weighed 60 pounds less. That is why I need to leave the LA circus, Lord. You are always welcome to visit me but don't bring anyone else. Bruce is invited too.

  28. That's horrible. The pressure of having 2 famous siblings and a niece must have been hard.

  29. Sounds to me like the sister had a lot of anger, which she finally turned on herself. Suicide is the ultimate angry act.

  31. I really hate Julia Roberts. One of the reasons I hate her is she donned a fat suit in a movie and commented that is she ever woke up looking like that, she would kill herself.

HOWEVER, she is not to blame for her sister's issues. I feel very sorry for her. If she and her sister did not make up, this death will be even harder for her to get through.

As others above have said, I cannot believe I stuck up for her.

    ReplyDelete
  32. As for comments like, "Julia always fat shamed her," uh we have *no* idea if that is true, that is just what one very angry, toxic woman claimed. The entire Roberts family was estranged from Nancy, not just Julia. That doesn't occur by happenstance. Julia was just the only person worth attacking because of her celebrity.

As for boycotting the wedding, again, if she didn't want to be an enabler to known issues with her sister (and her fiance), then of course she would (and should) do that. I've boycotted a sibling's wedding; we were estranged, and I was determined to not get sucked back into the emotional drama and abuse that an active relationship with that sibling ultimately inflicted. Of course, they pitched a huge fit over how mean I was, because that is what addicts do. They never acknowledge their behavior has played any part in the problem.

It's a cycle no one in their right mind wants to be stuck in.

  33. Im giving Julia a pass on sister and vera thing. We have no idea what vera did; she may have played dirty too. I read interview with sister and fat shaming seemed to be Julia encouraging her as she lost, not saying u fat. Julia was out of house when nancy 12, wrapped up in her life. Nancy troubled woman and Julia handy scapegoat. Hope shes at peace now.

  34. Am I the only one who reads "apparent overdose" and thinks that those are most definitely not always on purpose, a la suicide? Or was there a note or something and I haven't read about it?

    ReplyDelete
  35. @AKM, I would normally think so but for this message Moates sent to Roberts via Twitter recently:

"Hey Hag! Glad you f-—ed with me yet? You’re going to LOVE what’s coming! FYI-You’re an awful, hate filled old pathetic excuse for a human.”

Sounds like she was planning something to try to ruin her sister once and for all. Not conclusive but definitely suggestive.

  41. @Actress: Notice I didn't say ALL can be deadly. I have some very good Scorp friends who would walk through fire for anyone.

Maybe it is hard to live in the shadow of all those famous relatives but not everyone has the desire to be famous anymore that all siblings have equal talent. Based on that tweet GPS posted Nancy sounds like she had some issues. And she was estranged from the entire family.

    Rest her soul though.

  42. This is a sad story. Being made fun of by close relatives can fuck you up. Family is supposed to love you no matter what.

I worked with a lady who had lap band surgery and lost a lot of weight. She ended up a basket case with multiple health issues and a prescription pill addiction. As a result, she was fired and eventually ended up dying in her sleep a couple years later. She was in her 30's and had 2 young boys. Really sad.

  43. This is a terrible situation. Nancy was obviously a very sick woman with lots of problems. She blamed her sister for all her problems and threatened her over Twitter. Julia is a bitch for sure, but it wasn't her responsibility to take care of her sister. Maybe when she supposedly called Nancy fat, she was trying to wake her up to the realities of Hollywood where women are expected to be bone-thin or be the butt of a joke. Anyway, I hope Nancy has found peace finally.

  44. I thought it was an accidental overdose. I'm sure the woman had problems, but knowing Horseface's cruelty, I wouldn't be surprised if she fat shamed her sister. Also this was a half-sister, and it sounds like the older siblings resented her.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I thought she suicided, left a note blaming Julia for her cruelty to her.
Don't know if it's true, but I'm not a JR fan, and just by her self-involved persona, I tend to believe the bitchy evil stories about her.

    ReplyDelete
  46. As much as I don't like JR, I do feel bad for her and her family. It's a painful experience physically and emotionally to go through this. As far as calling suicide a selfish act, I don't believe that it is all the time. I believe that some people just don't have the skills to cope with life's challenges. They either never learned or didn't know how to cultivate what they did learn and put it into continuous practice.
