Four For Friday- Old Hollywood

The last Friday in February and it continues to rain here in LA. The Academy Awards are on Sunday and I will be blogging all weekend. On Sunday I will have several posts for the pre-show and the show itself. If you are gone until Monday I hope you will show up on Monday morning to enjoy the reports from the multitude of Oscar parties I will have people covering. If you would like to follow me on Twitter I am @entylawyer.

This actress was A+ list back in the day. Incredible actress. Beautiful. had everything going for her. She skyrocketed to fame and was gone in an instant. Academy Award winner/nominee. She also was being blackmailed. The entire time in LA she was basically forced to work. Her sister was back home in another country and was threatened with death unless our actress not only worked and sent money back home but also had to have sex with several well known gentleman in LA who had very specific kinks that she could fulfill. After a few years in LA and constantly working and even being forced to marry one of the men who basically had been raping her every day and night for years, her sister was killed or committed suicide. No one is quite sure. As soon as that hold was removed over her life our actress ran to another country and divorced her husband and never acted again.  At the peak of her fame, she was gone forever.

  2. Greta Garbos sister died before she became a star. Plus she acted for years, not her but I got shit for this.

  3. All I can guess is Louise Ranier, but that's not right.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Garbo never was married

    ReplyDelete
  5. Plus Garbo stayed here.

  7. Deanba Durbin sounds pretty good for this she had a sister and hated Hollywood.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Sonja Henning. Yeah, I dunno.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Poor thing. Is she still alive?

    ReplyDelete
  10. But her sister died much later so it ain't her either.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Just saw that, her sister died in 2010.

    ReplyDelete
  12. And I thought new Hollywood was vile. These old Hollywood blinds make me sick.

  15. How about Norma Shearer? She quit early had a sister with mental problems? Didn't like the system.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Marlene Dietrich stayed in show business

    ReplyDelete
  17. marlène dietrich never was married with a Hollywood guy

    ReplyDelete
  18. Mary Pickford seems to fit.

    ReplyDelete
  19. This sounds familiar.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @cleocat It sounds like the Loren blind but she never quit hollywood

    ReplyDelete
  21. Kink could be an Asian actress? Was there an Asian or ethnic woman that would fulfill a kink?

Otherwise an actress who looked very young, had an accent, had a domme style?

    ReplyDelete
  22. norma shearer never divorced.her husband(a hollywood producer) died during their marriage and she continued to work in Hollywood

    ReplyDelete
  23. Marlene Dietrich doesn't EXACTLY fit, but she did have a sister in Nazi Germany who stayed there the whole time Dietrich was in Hollywood. Easy to see possibilities for blackmail there. She'd also have definite potential for johns with fetishes. But her sister lived long after the end of World War II, and Dietrich didn't exactly disappear from view.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Okay, I'm going to go for Greta Garbo.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Shearer's sister was 85 at death.

Mary Pickford's sister died of a heart attack at 43 but in Beverly Hills. Pickford did quite a few films after her sister's death

    ReplyDelete
  26. mary pickford has been married several times with Hollywood guys and her sister died because of alcohol(in 36) and she's always married with Fairbanks when died in 1939

I was thinking Anna May Wong, one of the few actual asian old hollywood actresses...but it looks like she came to the US & worked in tv in the 50's

    ReplyDelete
  28. Garbo's sister died in 1926; Garbo kept making movies through the end of the 1930s.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Alright, Garbo's older sister Alva Maria was only 23 at death. But she became an American in 1951 and lived in New York for the rest of her life. So she's out.

    ReplyDelete
  30. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Faye

    ReplyDelete
  31. I read a Jaqueline Sussann book that had this same subplot/storyline. It seemed to be a very thinly disguised Greta Garbo.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Garbo lived on Sutton Place for years and walked miles everyday…not her

    ReplyDelete
  33. Anna May Wong was born in America and it's likely her six siblings lived there too. I was thinking Asian or otherwise "ethnic" though, with the kink clue.

Garbo stayed in NYC...she just didn't do movies anymore becuase she was getting older & was very vain...she couldn't deal with it

Norma, married a studio head & stayed in LA...died of very old age...

The Pickford sisters were actresses/models that were like the old hollywood version of Anna Lynned McCord & her sisters...Lesbians with each other & other hot women, but will sleeop with guys if it will help them get ahead

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The McCord sisters do each other? ? Dish please???

  35. not lilian Gish and her sister dorothy

    ReplyDelete
  36. Did Louise Rainer have a sister? She would fit if she did.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous11:10 AM

Anna May Wong did go back to her ancestral home for a while though...she came back to the US though & still worked in entertainment

    ReplyDelete
  38. Rainer had two brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What was the Loren blind?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Loren's sister is still alive and was married to a Mussolini.

    ReplyDelete
  41. RECAP:

Garbo - ruled out, stayed in NYC
    Loren - out, sister's alive
Wong - out, acted until 1960
    Rainer - out, 2 brothers
Pickford - out, acted past sister's death
Shearer - out, stayed in LA
    Durbin - out, no Oscar
Faye - out, no found sister
Valli - out, no found sister
Dietrich - reunited with her sister and nephew after WW2, no mention of sister's death, most likely out

    1. It says winner. Nominee. Could most likely be nominee who didn't win.

  42. How about Miyoshi Umeki? Got a best supporting actress award and stopped working shortly thereafter. Can't find anything on a death of a sibling.

  44. Miyoshi was on The Courtship of Eddie's Father and lived in the U.S. Died in Missouri

    ReplyDelete
  45. Umeki won in 1958 and continued to work - most notably as Mrs. Livingston in "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" (TV Version)in the late '60s. I hearted Bill Bixby very much, so I remember her well.

  46. Actually Deanna Durbin has an Oscar, Academy Juvenile Award. Don't know what happened to her sister, though. She did move to Paris and divorced her husband around the same time.

As for Pier Angeli, she was far from A list and only stopped making movies because she got herself killed with a drug overdose.

  47. Simone signoret? If susann used this story, it likely wasn't Garbo but somebody more of her contemporary - that seems more like her other stories. There have to be one or two others who fit this blind, but I can't think who...

  51. I was looking at Bridgette Bardot, but I can't find much info on her sister.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have no guess but this sounds like the Russians who squeeze celebs & athletes for $ now

    ReplyDelete
  53. I can also rule out Merle Oberon. Thought for sure she would be it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Deanna Durbin is still out because her sister lived to old age (died in 2010 as Edith Durbin Heckman).

    ReplyDelete
  55. Signoret - out, two brothers and no sisters

    ReplyDelete
  56. Bardot's sister has no death date on Wikipedia, and I'd say Bardot is still actively famous as an animal rights activist. She's been in the news several times in the last few years.

  59. Susan Kohner (Nominated for Imitation of Life). Appeared in films from 1955 to 1964 and then stopped. By the way, I love that movie!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Welp, I've gone through lists of winners and nominees and come up empty. Far as I can tell none fit the particulars.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Susan Kohner is Chris and Paul Weitz mom. I think she focused on raising her family.

According to wiki, Bardot's sister lives in LA with her husband who is an actor.

I think Bardot did quit acting. I think that's the key, who quit at the height of her career. Kim Novak quit when she was still hot, but she's not foreign born and lives in the US.

    Keep researching people!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Still checking the lists of nominees but these fit some but not all of the clues

    Bella Darvi
    Corinne Calvert

    ReplyDelete
  63. Any guess Greta Garbo?

    ReplyDelete
  64. I got excited about Jocelyne LaGarde - she died in Tahiti and is the only person who has been nominated for an Oscar for her only film appearance...then, I got to the part about her 300 pound commanding appearance...(She was nominated for supporting in Hawaii)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well it sounds like this BI has been debunked. Good job mythbusters!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. There's Colette Marchand who basically disappears after being nominated for an Oscar for Moulin Rouge and winning a Golden Globe for best new talent in the early 50s.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Garbo never married.

Definitely not Shearer, her sister was famously married to Howard Hawks.

I'm gonna think on this one a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hedy Llamar did quit acting and was definitey A+. Don't have time to research. I'm done for the night!

    ReplyDelete
  69. @TTM it's HEDLY! :) love that movie

    ReplyDelete
  71. Luise Ranier. German born Jew. Two AA wins for Best Actress. Married playwright/screenwriter/director Clifford Odets. Stopped working in Hollywood in 1938 and returned to Europe, where she divorced her husband. Currently lives in England and is the oldest AA winner.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Daisy, see above - ruled out.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh great, I need to get outta here! This is one of these blinds that has be obsessing for days. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Is this Vanessa Lake, the girl who Jessica Rabbit was based on?

She's one of the ones who disappeared in an instant.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Er, Veronica Lake that is.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Not Veronica Lake, born in NY. GAWD this I will obsess over!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I can find hardly any information about Colette Marchand except she was a dancer and didn't make any movie after the mid fifties. Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  78. It doesn't look like Colette Marchand ever recieved an academy nomination. Just a Golden Globe for "best newcomer." There were a handful of stars, back in the day, who quit Hollywood mysteriously. And as each is disproven, I am starting to think this blind is a composite description of several real people and no correct match for a single actress.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Colette Marchand received an Oscar nom for best supporting actress

    ReplyDelete
  80. Mariel and Margaux Hemingway.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Thought it might be Marisa Pavan but she was married to the same guy for years.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Merle Oberon has some real mystery in her past. Mostly passing for white when she was actually Asian.

Perhaps this is a variation of this story. Her "sister" could have been either her sisters or her own mother who like Jack Nicholson was claimed to be her sister by her grandmother.
