Blind Item #1
One of the biggest foreign born female celebrities in the world is HIV+. Apparently she was diagnosed almost two decades ago and has been living with the disease since. She recently opened up to a group of people about living with it.

ReplyDeleteYou won't out people, but this is OK? Way to draw the line
I think I will skip this one.

ReplyDeleteWhoever it is, good for her. There's a huge stigma, and if she can help dispell it, good on 'er. I have a friend that has been living with it for almost 20 years, some public backup would probably be welcome
ReplyDeleteYes but people deserve a right to their privacy. We are talking HIV here. People also have a right to decide whether or not they want to become a champion for some issue. For example, if Bruce decides to come forward as a MTF, I will be delighted. If Bruce wants to be private about it, I'm sad about the missed opportunities this would afford, but I respect Bruce's privacy at this time. Bottom line: this person clearly hasn't come out as positive, and this is NOT Enty's right to post, nor ours to discuss. Nothing to see here, folks.
DeleteYes, Lady H, but aren't you helping to perpetuate the myth that HIV is a more shameful disease than say, cancer? People don't typically get shooed away from guessing on those blinds. People with HIV can have got it in a myriad of ways, and talking about it in a rational way, as a terminal illness with harrowing treatment plans, can only help.
DeleteHaving said all that, I have no guess as I find all the illness blinds sad. I just think it's worth looking at why HIV is looked at so differently.
I'm not disagreeing with you at all
DeleteTTM. If I were this person, I personally would chose to use the illness as a way to bridge and educate. However, I respect that other people may feel differently and that is their choice, not mine.
A dear friend of mine is working on his PhD at UCSF and his research is on HIV and how it is so unique simple because of the complex social dimensions and stigmas that it carries. While a lot of his work was on epidemiology in the sense of studying how the SF gay community perceives HIV disclosure, he just shared a really interesting finding. The white men he interviewed, many of them refused to sleep with men of color until they became +. When asked further, it's quite horrifying how their admissions of being more racially inclusive were linked with narratives of contamination. As in, I'm now dirty because I have HIV, so I'm more open to dating other races, because they're also dirty...It's all very interesting but very sad about how we still continue to stigmatize those with HIV
I will say that the odds of Enty actually outing someone as gay or "outing" someone with HIV are slim and none. Indirectly, like Britney Spears.
DeleteThat's how the stigma goes away. I worked at a place where I did HIV/AIDS tests and it is just devastating when you see a positive, but I knew they were gonna be alright. I mean honestly, maybe it's because I know a lot about sex education, HIV isn't any different from herpes in terms of deadliness. It's like a pain you can't get rid of but you can live with it just fine. The stigmas need to stop!
DeleteTTM- Hope you're right, but it just felt whack to see this blind pop up first thing in the am
DeleteKels- Good for you and thank you for your service! I'm in no way saying that whoever this is should not be open about their status, I'm saying if respect it even if they chose not to. I'm not going through what they are, only they can decide what is best for themselves. And yes, we have come so far lately in terms of treatments as well as PREP. I hope that minds start to follow suit quickly
And TTM, I'm not only against this post because it is regarding HIV, I would be equally against this post if the celebrity in question had cancer. Cancer is no different.
DeleteI know, Lady H, but there definitely is a different tone when protesting HIV blinds. I'm just saying that the more it's talked about, the better informed everyone can be. I doubt very much there is ever a plan to out this person, unless someone outs themselves, at which point this would be revealed. Click bait
DeleteI'm glad that she's doing okay, but until she comes forward, I don't think it's necessary to out her.
ReplyDeleteI have too much class to throw out random names of possible HIV infected starlets, seems wrong.
ReplyDeleteHowever...
I'm classless enough to click the NOTIFY ME button and read YOURS. ((Drums fingers on table))

Deletethe Queen of England obviously!
ReplyDeleteDid anyone see The Dallas Buyers' Club? Excellent movie about an ordinary working class guy who got HIV - via straight sex, if it matters - and really made the best of the bad hand he'd been dealt. He did everything he could to find new treatment methods, wouldn't toe the medical establishment line about 'what was best for him', and then shared his new approaches (for a fee) with other ordinary people who were also HIV positive. Can highly recommend it, also on Netflix. It's the kind of movie you don't have to see on a big screen.
ReplyDelete@Nutty: GREAT movie. Not overall a big fan of Matthew M, but he nailed it in that movie.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I found that book on the fashion industry very interesting. Thanks for the recommend.
@OneEyeCharlie Happy to be of service! :=)
ReplyDeletekate moss
ReplyDelete@Nutty--that movie's on my list to watch.
ReplyDelete@Charlie-what book?? I wanna know!
Oh, I watched a TV show last night that was about this topic, oddly enough.
ReplyDeleteThere was a mystery series called Chandler & Co (Peter Capaldi, Barbara Flynn) in the 90s on BBC1.
One episide dealt with AIDS/HIV.
The storyline--a vicar's daughter goes to college. Sheds her old bf, her glasses and blossoms into a smart, lovely looking woman. Falls in love with someone else. Not sexually experienced. First lover/love gives her HIV. She goes public and disappears.
Vicar hires the private detective (Flynn) to find out where is daughter is--he tells the detective she's missing. In reality, he wants her to find out who gave her the disease.
@Nutty, that was a great movie!
ReplyDeleteBravo TTM. Everyone deserves privacy, especially medical privacy. If this person chooses to go public, yay for her. If not, people shouldn't speculate.
ReplyDeleteMerkel.
ReplyDeleteHow is this seen as "outting" when she publicly told a group she was speaking to at an event???
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, I don't have a clue.
A+ celebrity entertainer, I'll have to think on this one..
@Blondie!: "Deluxe" by Dana Thomas
ReplyDeleteAgree with others re: respecting privacy in this matter. I only hope no children are involved.
ReplyDeleteDon't reveal this one, Enty. Please.
Half if hollywood drinks the aids cocktail. This could be anyone.
ReplyDeletewhatever!!!! I WANT TO KNOW, Cant be moss she has young kids.
ReplyDeleteThere is less than .02% chance of a pregnant woman giving birth to hiv pos baby I they have been taking proper medication throughout pregnancy
DeleteCharo
ReplyDelete@katie, oh no there are no HIV+ actors in hollywood! Rock Hudson was the last one to get it.
ReplyDelete@Charlie--oh, I've read it. It's fascinating!
ReplyDeleteTo think that they make the goods in China, have them sent back to Italy, rip out the "Made in China" tag, then replace it with the "Made in Italy" tag, then price it in the thousands, boggles my mind.
Or that companies claim that items are hand cut and the materials are cut with a laser etc., Love that book.
I heard that Thomas has been working on a new book, can't wait to read that one!
What are all you "don't out her" complainers talking about???
ReplyDeleteI'll quote: She recently opened up to a group of people about living with it.
She is out, you numbskulls!
All we know is she came out to a group of people. That could mean anything, like her family or close friends. I don't think that means a bunch of people on CDAN. I'm sorry you think I'm a numbskull but I just feel bad that this is even being speculated about.
DeleteAngelina
ReplyDeleteKylie Minogue
ReplyDeleteI was talking to someone who is working on getting his masters in Philosphy. He was telling me that he wants to concentrate his work on how music and pop songs are a reflection of the cultural zeitgeist.
ReplyDeleteSo I asked him how he would be able to explain the dichotomy of the dance music of the 80s; where they songs were talking about sex whilst the culture at the time was grappling with the rising AIDS epidemic.
He told me that he hadn't gotten t that yet.
But what if this person has been sexually active and passing it on? Don't people have a right to know?
ReplyDeleteConsidering the sex and drugs in Hollywood, I'm surprised we don't hear more about it.
ReplyDeleteI heard stories about RDJ years ago but he's still around, albeit somewhat worse for the wear.
That means nothing. The medicine is so advanced that most people look normal and live a very very long life. It's not a death sentence like it used to be.
Delete@Nutty - I thought Jared Leto made the movie. He was great and heartbreaking. Had no idea he had it in him. Been's goofing around with his silly band for so long - I forgot he was an actor.
ReplyDeleteEnty has outed Britney Spears for having it. But I don't understand why she is always talking about wanting more children?! That sounds dangerous for everyone involved.
ReplyDeleteSee Katie's stats. It's not a death sentence and the chances of the kids having it are sooooo slim.
DeleteI'm highly doubting Spears has HIV, I'd like to see this "outed" post
DeleteHe totally outed her as going in to get an abortion during her head shaving early conservator days. She apparently had stated she was positive and made a list of people she slept with. Hence why she went crazy.
Delete@Katie--kk I really had no clue about that sorta thing. My friend has it and she wanted to get a nose job but the surgeon she preferred to do the procedure refused her...
ReplyDeletei am thinking about the kylie minogue guess more and more
ReplyDelete@Lady---don't listen to him-he is notorious for being arrogant and name calling! The only time I wanna hear from him is when they bring back To Catch a Predator and he is finally busted trying to get little girls to dress up like Emma Watson in Harry Potter!
ReplyDelete@Lady--you're preaching to the choir here. I think that we're all with you on this.
ReplyDeleteUnless she goes public; sends out a press release, does a press conference, interview etc., she ought to be left alone.
For all we know this public event that Enty's talking about is that she just NOW told her family.
I do agree that if she goes public, she could help a lot of people. However, she might not as she might be terrified of Hollywood locking its doors in front of her.
Either way, until she's ready to announce it, we should respect her silence.
moss or Minogue
ReplyDeletethere have to be dozens in hw who have hiv. anyone know any?
I thought Farrah fawcet actually had hiv and just said cancer??
@Kels: I have heard of HIV being more like diabetes. Take your meds and you will live a long life. I have heard while on the meds, it will be undetectable that you have the bug. No clue if you can still pass it though.
ReplyDeleteThe chances of transmission change depending on the viral load of the infected partner. A partner that is negative can further reduce the likelihood of becoming infected by using PREP drugs as another prophylactic measure
DeleteTHIS IS THAT GODDAMN GARBAGE SLUT PRINCESS CAMILLA. SHE GOT IT FROM PRINCE CHARLES WHO LIKES TO FUCK HIS MANSERVANTS UP THE ASS BAREBACK.
ReplyDeleteFergie, Duchess of York
ReplyDelete@ sugarbread, thiking rdj, frank langella, the old robocop guy, alton brown, van damme
ReplyDeleteHIV is not like diabetes. Without proper medication it IS a death sentence, which is not true with some diabetics. HIV is definitely more comparable to cancer. You really, really don't want to get it.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't guess on his one
ReplyDeleteRaquel welch is in dm today
ReplyDeletetony geary, anderson cooper
ReplyDeleteI don't believe any of the blind items on this site. So hopefully there WILL be a 'reveal' and this site gets sued for spreading malicious lies.
ReplyDeleteI missed this Brittany Spears outing. Does someone have a link?
ReplyDeleteSurprising how many well known people have had AIDS/mostly died from AIDS:
ReplyDeletehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_HIV-positive_people
How is Enty outing when he doesn't say who it is?
ReplyDeleteI'll take a guess on this if no one else wants to...
ReplyDeleteForeign-born, one of the biggest stars in the world, been living with it for almost two decades so she's got to be older than 35 (hopefully, otherwise we're looking at rape)... Catherine Zeta Jones?
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteNutty - I saw DBC last week. Matthew M. reminded me of Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon. An amazing story. Sad how no major studio in Hollywood had the balls to finance it.
ReplyDeletenot kylie, think she too young @ tyger, possibly someone in the 40-60 age
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if it's not someone older, like a Catherine Deneuve-type.
ReplyDeleteThis just goes to show how much better the medical community has gotten in regards to helping people stay alive. My uncle died of aids related issues and if only they knew then what they know now he would still be here. Miss that guy badly.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss, Sherry. It is so unfortunate that patients get victimized first by the illness and then by misinformed and cruel people. Stay strong
DeleteSherry, I'm so very, very sorry for your loss.
ReplyDelete"She recently opened up to a group of people about living with HIV." I'm really hoping that this was not at an AA (or similar) meeting, where there is an expectation of confidentiality.
ReplyDeletePeople, being HIV positive IS a serious health problem. It's treatable. And saying, "Meh, it's like diabetes" is more than a bit naive. Even people who get the best possible care for diabetes often, over the long term, have some pretty bad side effects, or have regular health crises. Clearly, an HIV positive person who takes their meds and takes precautions and lives a healthy lifestyle can live a reasonably long and happy life, but it's not that easy. I worked a white-collar job in health care back in the 80s when HIV was a fast-track death sentence. I'm so happy every time I read about yet another advance in treatment. But please, it's still a very serious, life-changing illness.
ReplyDeleteKylie is mid-40's and dated Michael Hutchence for a while, he is very likely to be HIV positive :(
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletewell enty did out it for Spears---Its not my responsibility to provide you with a link---can I get some back-up--anyone else remember this?
ReplyDeleteYeah. I remember it but am very lazy. The first blind said that an a+ singer disclosed to a physician that she was hiv+. The next day, the blind said that the reason for the physical was an abortion.
DeleteThe abortion blind was revealed as britney. So I guess technically enty can say that he never technically outed her hiv status.
Wow! I always assumed the answer to that blind was Lindsay. She was photographed leaving a hospital in that same time period and her father outed her HIV status some time later. I was so sure. Grrrrr
DeleteThing is, AIDS is considered a "sex disease", same as herpes, but even worse because it's a "gay sex" disease. Think about how sexuality is viewed in the US. A movie that shows some boobies gets an R rating, while a movie with multiple violent scenes - including decapitation - gets PG-13. How is violence better than boobies?
ReplyDeletePeople are squeamish about things like this because it makes them think about squeamish things like sex and (GASP!) gay sex. Why do you think a third of the blinds on this site are about an actor being gay or an female celeb who makes out with women when she's drunk (ahem, Avril Lavigne reveal). It's just too clutch-my-pearls salacious to not use.
Okay, I deleted my guess cuz I felt bad for putting it there. But think of an actress who was born in south Africa and had been raped
ReplyDeleteCharlize
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts.
DeleteDont hink its an actor , enty usually distinguish them differently
ReplyDeletePlus charlize was NEVER RAPED, she says its a rumour started when she formed an anti rape thing back home
ReplyDeleteMichael Hutchence is in the DM today...
ReplyDeletePlease never reveal this. People need their medical issues kept private.
ReplyDeleteI'm a RN. During the mid to late 80's I worked with a lot of patients who were HIV+ . No one except the medical staff were supposed to know about any medical condition. This was in a general medical or surgical ward. Their meals were always left outside of their rooms, & cleaners refused to enter the rooms. It was heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteDon't tell us who this is please.
I was a pathology technician for 10 years. I would like to go over some facts re: HIV.
ReplyDeleteHIV is a lipid based virus, meaning it is not very strong out of its host. If a bit of blood is dried up, the HIV virus is dead. The risk of infection is dose related, meaning the more infected substance you get in your bloodstream the more likely you are to contract HIV. The good news is if you are a health professional & can get the anti-viral drugs straight after a needle stick injury, your chances of contracting the virus are tiny. There was a very bad needle stick injury to a nurse in a local hospital about 15-20 years ago & she didn't contract the virus as she was given anti-viral drugs immediately. Compare this information with the Hepatitis virus, which is a very strong virus & can last for 3 days on surfaces (the cleaning of laboratory benches with alcohol did not destroy the Hepatitis virus). This also explains why babies can be born to HIV positive mothers and not be infected if the appropriate treatment is given to. mother and baby throughout and after the pregnancy.
The reason certain groups have a higher rate of HIV infection due to sexual intercourse is merely a result of tissue strength. The anal tissue is more prone to tearing which allows the easier transmission of the virus into the blood stream. The vaginal tissue, while stronger than anal tissue, is still prone to tearing and that is why there is greater male to female transmission of the HIV virus during sexual intercourse than vice versa.
With all the education that we in the developed world have, the only two groups that I would expect to see with high transmission rates are intravenous drug users and sex addicts (and unfortunately rape victims). However, we live in the real world where bigotry, shame & complacency are killing us. If everyone could be open about their sexuality, without fear of judgement, we wouldn't have the down low issue which introduces HIV back into a wider percentage of the population. If we were honest with ourselves & accepted that anyone can become infected, we might practice safe sex and monogamy and be close to eradicating HIV/AIDS in a few generations.
We also seem to have become more conservative, which means a brilliant song like Let's Talk About Sex isn't getting played. Saw the film clip the other day & was again blown away by how brilliant it was at educating and entertaining.
Finally, you have different strains of HIV, so just because you are positive, and someone else is positive, doesn't mean you can have unprotected sex. If you have different strains you can infect each other with the different strain. Hope this was informative.
@feraltart thank you so much for writing all of this out, thank you so much for explaining this to everyone.
ReplyDelete@feraltart
ReplyDeleteSo very well said...
Nice one @feraltart! I have many friends living with HIV, some for over 25 years and one who was one of the first ever diagnosed here in. Australia. It is not. A death sentence anymore due to the revolution in drugs, however I would not compare it diabetes either.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who wants to know more about the amazing, brave and hard won fight for the right drugs should watched the doco "How we survived a plague" about ACT UP. Simply stunning that humans can rally together and force the US government to speed up drug testing to help HIV sufferers. Without ACT UP it might still be a death sentence.

ReplyDeleteAs a gay man I have ALWAYS been petrified of AIDS/HIV I am damn lucky I dont have it---but know a few people that do. I don't know much about it besides dont sleep around and if you do ALWAYS wear rubber---and dont use dirty needles etc. I completely agree with @Lady it is so stigmatized cause trash like *it took forever* consider it a gay disease.
ReplyDeleteLike here is a story. I have a few about people I know that have it. The first time I ever met someone that told me they had HIV was at this lesbian bar in Toronto called Tangos. This guy kept tapping me on the shoulder and being annoying etc. I thought he was just a creep---but then I had to use the washroom and I ran into him---he was BLIND because he was sick from that horrible disease. I had no idea-------------I thought he was just weird--but I became friends with him (he taped me on the shoulder cause he said he could hear my kind voice FTR) and a few years later I attended his funeral. My friend I was discussing had a hook-up with a guy that had it and was stupid enough not to consider using a condom.. A straight chick---very beautiful and never slept around. The guy was HOT so he could not possibly be sick. She worked with the guy and heard whispers behind her back about "does she know--?!" cause the guy with HIV worked there longer and let everyone in the free world know but her! After a co-worker was kind enough to chime her in about the scenerio-2 days later it was on the Toronto news station and in every newspaper that the guy slept with so many women and never told them! I was watching the news and knew everything and I just burst into tears for my friend.
ReplyDeleteI remember that.
Delete@Topper: So once you get cancer, you can take your anti cancer meds and be cancer free unless you stop?
ReplyDelete@Lee: You fail reading comprehension too.
Celine Dion
ReplyDeleteNicole Kidman.
ReplyDelete@Derek how is it still considered gay disease? where in my writing did you see that or because you saw all male names? am i to MAKEUP some woman's name to make you feel good? well here goes, mother theresa you feel better now! calling me thrash just shows your limited vocabulary, oh that must be a gay disease too?

ReplyDeleteOT Alert: Book Club Tonight at 6:30 MT on BI#2, see anyone / everyone there!
*Sorry I meant to say I agree with Seven about the stigmatization of the disease..very good point! You write so well.
ReplyDelete@Derek, *I* was the one who said "gay disease", and I used quotes to emphasize the ridiculousness of the concept. It took forever was making a similar jab about how no one in Hollywood has had AIDS since Rock Hudson. It's not saying HIV/AIDS is solely a gay disease, it's pointing out that that is what scandalous gossip rags imply - if you're HIV+, it's because you're either gay or a slut.
ReplyDeleteDerek you sure are a popular boy lately, everyone is always talking about/referencing your posts. Pretty soon someone is going to start posting creepy pictures of your house with their reflection on the computer screen.

ReplyDeleteYou know, all day long we were conversing nicely and exchanging ideas, then this thread blew up.
ReplyDeleteSigh, can we not attack each other? We're all here to have fun and/or exchange ideas--this is our haven against reality.
Chaos gives me wood. Not quite as much as tonight's episode of True Detective, but wood none the less. Keep sluggin it out CDAN posters.
ReplyDelete2 non spoiler thoughts on True Detective:
1) The casting director picks some fine trim to go nude.
2) I think for the interrogation scenes, they just give Matt a doobie and bullet points. I think Rust is only a tiny bit farther out there than he is.
I thought this was going to be a nice thread to educate people.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, a few years ago I had some surgery done and a resident stuck himself with one of the used needles. The next day my surgeon asked if I was willing to be tested for HIV because the resident was terrified. They were taking so much blood from me anyway so it didn't really matter. I felt so bad for the poor guy. I couldn't imagine what was going through his head, and also thinking about people who wouldn't allow themselves to be tested in that situation.
Erin Andrews replacing Brooke Burke on DWTS. She is HOT! I feel bad that key hole video was done w/o her knowledge, but that broad got nuthin to be embarrassed about. She got rockin body.
ReplyDeleteClaudia Schiffer.
ReplyDeletePam?
ReplyDeleteThank you @feral tart.
ReplyDeleteThis is a gossip blog, not the morality police. I had friends I lost in the 80s-early 90s. I think they'd be shocked at how little we discuss this.
Dallas Buyers Club is great. Matty Mc & Leto both should win Oscars.
This doesn't say actor. I'm guessing Kate Moss as well.
Lesbians don't give other Lesbians HIV, so it is a heavily related male disease. It goes male/male, male/female, but not female/female.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it is a HORRIFIC death sentence if you don't take care of yourself. You can't drink, drug or do anything that jacks with your immune system. You catch the flu and HIV can rise. It's an immune virus disorder. Please don't think it is benign just because it responds to treatment. It still kills, it's just not an automatic death sentence anymore.
By the way, knew someone who did the Dallas Buyer's Club thing too. That's def a true depiction of what happened.
Thank you @feral tart: You did us all a favor and great service!
ReplyDeleteSetting up a blind and revealing/outing someone are 2 completely different things. It's always so amusing how commentors pick and choose what they want to get up on their high horse about.
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree Gina, there's always more drama in the comments than in the blog itself.
Btw, when someone says biggest foreign born female celebrity, Celine Dion automatically comes to mind. Not saying this is her though...
ReplyDeleteObviously Charlize Theron
ReplyDeleteObviously Charlize Theron
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Kylie, but Kate Moss is a possible too.
ReplyDeletemy first thought was Gloria Estefan. I don't know why... she fits A+ for her musical past and her age would also fit.
ReplyDeleteShe sings andproduces, did movies, wrote books and owns an hotel. Would fit 'celebrity' : she is not just a singer.
Could be someone older like Olivia Newton-John.
ReplyDelete
