If you think Hollywood is alone in minors being sexually exploited by their older co-stars and producers and directors, it turns out Telemundo would like a word with you.
Radar has a post up about Genesis Rodriguez. She was 16 when she got her start on the telenovela Prisionera and soon found herself being sexually assaulted by her 30 year old co-star who was married with children. The two were caught having oral sex at a party. The man was fired from his job which is not what would happen here. His wife divorced him which may or may not happen here and the network paid out millions to Genesis to keep quiet which would definitely happen here.
The 30 year old said it was consensual. Apparently the relationship had been going on for sometime and Genesis says she was manipulated into sleeping with the man. The co-star didn't serve any jail time because of the financial settlement. Genesis moved to the United States shortly after the scandal.
What is interesting is that she co-starred with Paul Walker in his last movie. Paul Walker of course started dating his girlfriend when she was just 16 and he was in his 30's.
Wherever there is power, there will be corruption so unfortunatly, I do not find this surprising. I am however, going to refrain on judging Walker's relationship for the time being.

Realistically, that scenario does not necessarily add up to minors being sexually exploited anymore in this day and age of minions of minors going on 30.

According to Wikipedia the age of consent in Mexico is murky. The age of consent, below which anything is always statutory rape, is as low as 12! However there is a gray zone, generally between 12 and 18, in whch statutory rape may be applied. It would appear to me that the networks public image was more of a concern than the relationship itself.

Prisionera was filmed in Miami. Islas was replaced because he left the US. Genesis loved it unril they were caught. El Puma extorted $$ from Islas to not go after his ass.

second, her father is venezuelan josé luÃs rodrÃguez, better known as 'el puma' throughout latin america. he's a huuuuge icon of a singer-turned-actor-turned-singer. huuuge. as in permanenet a-list+++. that little tidbit explains the HUGE settlement and payout. at the time, telemundo had just been bought by nbc-universal, and they were not about that scandal life.
the actor in question, mexico-based mauricio islas, had a tough time landing good roles since this happened (2005)...he only began landing the 'leading man' ones again recently, and they've not been w/ telemundo.

ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to pedophilia, the type that prey on children, which we would all agree is wrong, it seems that this is not something that can be untaught since it sure ain't taught that it is right. Only those were sexual abused as children themselves or seen it happen to others in their family. I believe the stats are that most pedophiles will re-offend, the success stories are few and far between.
ReplyDeleteKudos to Pope Francis who just announced an initiative to finally prevent this in the Catholic Church. The solution is twofold - allow priests to be married as they were in the early days of the Church and any priest that is caught is history not reassigned to a different parish and try to prevent potential pedophiles from entering the priesthood in the first place. There is a documentary about the pedophilia scandals in California and the priest that was happily cooperating in the documentary had abused children in Ireland before he even entered the priesthood. I believe it was a matter of public record.
