Kate Winslet Is Starting To Worry Me - Names Her Son Bear

I would never have expected something like this from Kate Winslet. She has gone with a name first used by Alicia Silverstone who is a bastion of sensibility and named her son Bear. Considering the son will have the surname of Winslet rather than Rocknroll leads me to two thoughts. One, Kate doesn't think this marriage is one for a lifetime so doesn't want the child embarrassed for a lifetime. The second thought is that she had to accept Bear when she won on the Rocknroll part of the name. Kate has never been a part of the Teen Mom naming fraternity and I thought we would get something traditionally British. I really thought it would be Richard after her husband's uncle Richard Branson and someone very close to Kate too. I mean, the couple did meet at Richard's place.

  1. She could have just gone with Bjørn, which is the Scandinavian version of Bear and a recognized first name.

Not that Bjørn Winslet sounds any better...sounds like a fifth-place slalom jumper.

  2. Okay who are you and what have you done with our enties? "Bastion of sensibility"? I didn't know you even knew those words existed! I am impressed.

Bear isn't the worst on the celeb name rainbow, but IDK if it is something I would recommend to all my friends. At least she didn't use Rocknroll, gotta give her credit for that.

  3. They'll probably just nickname him Barry which is much better than the last name Rockandroll, according to playground rules.

I'm with you, @fancyscreenname. It sounds German and almost like it's short for something. When she starts calling her kids Sh*thead McGee Rocknroll THEN maybe we'll have reason to worry. Plus, her daughter's middle name is Honey and her other son's middle name is Alfie, so it doesn't sound like she's one for uber traditional names. Also, when you have Inspektor Pilot's and Zuma's out there in the world, Bear seems downright boring.

    1. Alfie is a very popular and traditional name in England. As for Honey...well, Honey Wheeler from the Trixie Belden mysteries series. Yep, that's all I got.

  7. Definitely not the worst, but eh.

  8. If this were a child likely to grow up big and burly, I might give it a pass. But looking at his parents that is unlikely. Therefore this is a really stupid choice made by stupid people.

  10. I call my son and my dog Bear as a nickname because they are cute and cuddly, so I'm down with Bear Winslet.

  11. I'm a bit call your kids whatever really. But her other two have fairly traditional names (Mia and Joe) so to go a bit squiffy on the next one is a bit odd. And I do always think it might be a bit tough on these kids to have to live up to an off beat name when they grow up.
Having said all that my children's names are freakishly boring and classically English (one a recently born prince's name and one an aunt who makes a pancake mix in the US. There is a third but I can't think of any name associations) and I kind of admire people who go a bit adventurous.

  12. Bear Grylls isn't a big, burly bloke. Maybe they named their son after him.

  13. Anthony Kiedis started the stupid fad.

    1. Sherry - I actually think it is not a bad name either. Bronx might be ok if not for the mowgli.

  17. feraltart, I thought the same thing about Grylls, except Bear isn't even his real name.

  18. Well, it's not just her baby. Her husband must've had his say on the name too. Since the baby got to keep her surname, maybe she let her husband decide on the first name. I personally think Bear is a cute name, and I actually know some people named Bear. It's unusual, but cute and not nearly as horrendous as most celebrity baby names out there. Bear Winslet. Really doesn't sound bad. Doesn't fill me with rage. It's a fine name.

I don't get why people are saying stuff like "oh I didn't expect Winslet to give her child a unique name" when she married a man named Ned Rocknroll. I think her husband has brought out her quirky side and she's not afraid to embrace it. I have never seen her as free and as confident as she is now; not that I didn't like her before, but she used to be more uptight especially during the Revolutionary Road/The Reader days. She's so much more relaxed nowadays.

Kate named her other kids Mia and Joe, so the fact that her third kid's name is Bear tells me that either her husband got to choose the name himself (since his surname wasn't passed down) and she settled OR it's the result of how he has influenced her and brought out her quirky side as I said earlier. Who knows, the name might also have a special meaning for the couple.
