Blind Item #2
This B list mostly television actress who is on a hit television show was asked why her show doesn't have more people of color. "I don't have any friends who are black so why should I be forced to have them in my show?"

If this is supposed to be Lena Dunham, that would be way too obvious to be a BI. She already whined about it on twitter.
ReplyDeleteLena Dunham... Girls
ReplyDeleteHoly Shit, Who is this moron I will never watch her in anything…
ReplyDeleteYea, the diversity police will get ya!
ReplyDeleteI love GIRLS. I use to hate it but a friend lent me both seasons on dvd and I watched them all one weekend and the show is brilliant with great character development. I think you have to watch them all at once to understand it though. I can relate a lot to the characters a few years ago when I was that age. That being said 2nd season the main character Hannah dated a black republican character played by Donald Glover and it was quite funny and Hannah made a fool of herself by being an "accidental racist" so I dont get the big deal about her not having other races on the show. The show focuses on her and 3 other characters who are a close circle of friends who happen to be white. Lots of shows with 100% black casts dont get looked down upon as being racist for not having white characters. so stupid.
ReplyDeleteWell said.
Deletecan a good show amEVER just be left at that?it depicts her life....does anyone harass tyler perry about whether or not he actually knows any white peeps cuz THEY. aint repped in his films or that atrocious show.on oprahs network
Except of course-that impressive thespian kim k in that masterpiece of a film he released couple years ago....now if it was a crime show that wasnt casting people of color/ethnic diversity..then theres a reason to question
DeleteThey are lots of white people in Tyler Perry movies lol...wow you should check his work. Kim Kardashian definitely was not the only one. Smh
DeleteWouldn't Dunham be higher than B list? Even if it is, forced diversity only makes for token characters, which are worse.
ReplyDeleteTA Violet. Snl got a lot of flack for not having a black female cast member, now they announce they are adding one in the new year. I'm all for diversity, but doesn't that feel a bit forced?
DeleteSo she is close friends with everyone on her show? Not what I hear.
ReplyDeleteDerek has touched on something that annoys the hell out of me: black people can be every bit as racist as white, against white people and also against other darker skinned black people. And don't get me started on BET.
ReplyDeleteRead my reply to derek.
Deleteagreed
Lena Dunham doesn't have friends.
ReplyDeleteCan't stand her anyway. She couldn't comment on the Lisa Lampanelli situation.
Racism is racism regardless of what race you are.
I think there aren't many black people who'd want to be on Girls.
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo...this may be zoe d.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree! Top line says "mostly tv actress", I don't think Dunham has done movies.
DeleteDunham was in This is 40 not too long ago
Delete@Gypsy--thanks!
ReplyDeleteand I forgot to mention that the friend that lent me the GIRLS dvd is a black girl! lol
she has a brain and can differentiate the fact that the characters are 4 white girls that are not joining the KKK anytime soon
Dunham has done movies---Tiny Furniture and This is 40
ReplyDeleteI wish this was that annoying "the Zooey" but her stupid show has a black guy in the main cast. I really really hate The New Girl (although I have only seen it twice for like 10 minutes before I changed the channel)
I liked New Girl's 1st season, but haven't been into it since. The quality of the writing sunk and Zooey became more annoying with each episode.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if Super Fun Night is a hit but I have watched it a few times and I don't think I saw one person of color on it.
ReplyDeleteRebel Wilson created the show, if it is her I would like to think she is being sarcastic in that Ozzie way.
Using BET as the barometer to judge whether blacks are racist is hilariously obtuse.
ReplyDelete@ Kari S the diversity police what do you mean by that? You know not all of us are white and some of us would like to see people who look like us on TV. I mean it's not like white people are under represented in the media.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWell sadly, obtusity and opaque-ness are now a.bit more subjective due to the incessant -and oft-unjustified claims of people of color that they are under -represented in mainstream media.
ReplyDeleteas was the evocation set forth by the BI
and evidently...i dont stand alone in my opinion:)
Noone.saying BET racist...just exclusionary...but that goes unquestioned. Contrarily...if in existence say-a channel inclusive of only its whiteness...or a show like girls-callsbof racism ppoisen the air
um Layna lots of shows have black casts without white people not on BET
ReplyDeleteFamily Matters
Fresh Prince
Martin
Everybody Hates Chris
The Wayan Brothers
not to mention movies like the incredibly racist (but funny as hell) White Chicks.
I see no problem with that sorta thing I watch a lot of them or use to. But there should not be a double standard.
and The Rebel Wilson Show is even worse than The New Girl if that is even possible...
ReplyDeleteDeschanel (sp?) Dunham is the obvious answer, and quite a detestable spoiled brat, but this issue was covered and recovered in the last year.
ReplyDeleteThe word "racist" gets used quite often when other terms like prejudice, bias, xenophobia, discrimination, cultural appropriation, etc., is really the correct term.
Requiring that she add others of different races and cultures strictly to satisfy some imagined quota, is degrading, in itself. Yes, "racial discrimination," an act of excluding or restricting someone simply for their race, color, ethnic origin, is always wrong, but pandering or forcing someone to add a person strictly because of the above would be "reverse racism," in today's world.
Watching Girls you would think that there isn't one black person living in Wiilamsburg Bushwick and the lower east side. Sorta the way Seinfeld was back in the day or SatC was before Girls.
ReplyDeleteAnybody who wants something different on TV should not sit around and wait for someone else to do it but should get into the entertainment industry and make it happen themselves.
ReplyDeletemaybe this person thinks they cant write for a black person, since they dont know any. Idk, but it may not be just that she wont work with black people.

ReplyDeleteWell said Di...
ReplyDeleteenough with the whining and whingin'bout lack of opportunties or PC ness....its beyond insulting to anyone with a cranium, eyes and ears..
just get on with it already
or tune into BET,MTV,120/PARK,OWN ,HALF THE SHOWS ON FOX,ANY NCIS WHATEV CUZ YOULL FIND DIVERSITY..REALISTICALLY SO.
Lena has written and starred in her own movie, Tiny Furniture, as mentioned up thread.
ReplyDeleteShe acts, writes, exec produces, I think this is someone else.
This is such an odd convo. @Gypsygirl @Derek, et al I'm sure if I were a comedic actress, I would have more difficulties having access to roles in a lot of comedies on TV. I think a lot of actors of color end up on Tyler Perry like shows because these can be the best opportunities available.
ReplyDeleteI don't think shows need to have tokens, but I do observe a distinct lack of diversity* at times, especially in comedies not on Fox. As I've gotten older, I realize that can subconsciously influence whether or not I'll watch the show.
*lack of diversity in all forms. If Girls were to represent my life...the group would be black, white, Chinese, Persian, Japanese, Mexican, straight, gay. We're like a Benneton ad...which
is exactly why we would never make it to air.
Some of you are obtuse in that BET and Tyler Perry are your default go-to institutions to validate whatever opinion of black people in the media you seem to have--without realizing that many blacks don't care for BET and Tyler Perry themselves, albeit for different reasons.
ReplyDelete@Layna some of "us"?
ReplyDelete@V thats cause you seem cool and 99% of sitcoms suck and hire generic robots. I would hire you to be on my sitcom! You could be my sassy neighbor ***JOKESJOKES*****
ReplyDeleteListen Derek, I can't do a neck roll to save my life. I'm not sure how far I could get with the sassy...lol ;)
Deleteits alright V I can neck roll for the both of us! I use to watch a lot of Living Single lol
ReplyDeleteOkay Derek, you can neck roll ;)
ReplyDeleteThings I that make me a good neighbor - braiding hair, keeping a well stocked bar (specifically wine, beer and bourbon), and baked goods.
Almost every channel is the white channel. What shows on CBS star blacks, Asians or Latinos? What shows on NBC star blacks, Asians or Latinos? TNT? Fox? AMC? TBS? USA?
ReplyDeleteIf you can list something that makes up more than 1% combined then I will say I am wrong. What is the racial makeup of the United States compared to television?
Looking at the TV landscape you would think there are NO Latinos or Asians living in this country.
It is simply not Lena Dunhams (or whomever this may be) responsibility to star and write a show representing the black community. Now it is true that network channels are full of old fuddy duddy white people that don't really care and give much funding etc. but it is not her problem. She gets enough flack for not being "pretty" enough etc. There is an internet show supposedly a lot like girls on youtube that has a mostly black cast--I forget what its called cause I have never seen it, but it is very popular. I think that is cool that a culture is being proactive and making a show that people feel needs to be made instead of complaining. Lena is lucky because she wrote and directed a movie that critics loved and caught the attention of Judd Allpatow (spelling?) and he wanted to produce a show with her for HBO.
ReplyDeleteI could care less but I fell the need to correct a few of u guy....first most Tylor perry films have a diverse cast, the spanish girl from Modern family started out in his film along with white actors as well js....and as for BET the only thing black about that channel is the name.....all host are Hispanic. ?.. I however believe if u dont like or can't identify with the vison of the movie or shows creator dont watch thats the beauty of having options.....on e again just saying
