Beyonce Refuses To Remove Challenger Crash Audio From Song - Says Death Loss And Relationship Loss Are Same

After creating a firestorm by using audio from the crash of the Space Shuttle Challenger in her song XO, I think people expected Beyonce to remove the sample from the song. Well, you don't know Beyonce. She says that while she feels sorry for those people who died in the Challenger accident, the clip is appropriate because death and relationship loss are the same thing so the clip fits.

Here is what I think happened. Beyonce either didn't listen to the clip or know it was from an accident or did and had an orgasm over the publicity it would bring and then had some BS crap story ready to go. Her song is about relationships and not death. Her song is about a breakup. Her song is not about losing someone to death. This is Beyonce telling the world that she will do what she wants and a big f**k you to the people and their families who died in the crash.

    1. Typical of hip hop? Um fuck you. You know nothing of real hip hop. I suppose A Tribe Called Quest is self absorbed and overrated? Wu Tang? Andre 3000? Nas? Childish Gambino? Chance the Rapper? Keep your mouth shut about things you know nothing about!

  5. So the ppl personally devastated by the challenger are listening to Beyonce and are being hurt all over again by the sample? Not likely. More like ppl constantly LOOKING for something to be outraged over. Next!

Disagree. If there was a recording of the moment your child/sister/husband died I'm pretty sure you would object to some daft bint putting it on her song for everyone to hear and essentially make money off of it.
Yes the actual people it hurts is probably under 100 but even if it was 1 person it is wrong.

  7. Beyonce used the clip on purpose and when called on it, said she wanted to "keep the memory alive" for those who died. Bey is so full of herself she doesn't realize the world doesn't need her to honor people who did real things.

  8. Of course her own feelings are more important than the feelings of those who lost their loved ones in a disaster. Sickening.

Songs are about the interpretation of events /emotions etc of the artist. If she sees the connection between the explosion and a break up, so be it. The news.plays the clip. Is of disrespectful to the family when they do it?

I was in 3rd grade watching it on TV with my class. The students didn't know what happened when the teachers started screaming and crying. I'm guessing that when the Challenger(?) Took there was an explosion and when it exploded in the air the student didn't realize that that second explosion wasn't supposed to happen. We were all silent and a bit confused when the teachers went nuts.

  19. She actually has a song on her album about death, called Heaven. Yall say you hate her but what has she really done that is so bad? Has she ever harmed anyone? Ever act a fool? Did she say something offensive? The hate towards her is so....lame.

Beyonce's music just makes me feel so good, so empowered, I guess you guys haven't listened to her work, just wanna keep calling her self absorbed and selfish. I love seeing a black woman command this kind of attention.

The has it right, she's a cunt. There is NOTHING to like about her. Arrogant, talentless, unattractive, overrated, just like her husband! That mofo can't even rap to his own music, mush mouthed jackass. Anyone who likes those no talent overhyped Satan worshipping demons is retarded.

  22. Remember the first time your heart was broken and it felt like the world was going to end? You wondered how you could go on. You didn't think you would ever love again. You wrote bad poetry, drunk-dialed and bored all your friends to death. You were Arwyn, standing watch at Aragorn's tomb until the end of time? You were Rose, never letting go of Jack? (Even though you *totally, literally* let go of him.)

And then you turned 14 or 24 or 44 and moved on after all because it wasn't cancer or AIDS or debilitating depression and you could still wake up and roll out of bed each day b/c you hadn't just disintegrated off the coast of Florida?

Using this clip equates a terrifying and historic loss with romantic heartache. An entire generation watched this LIVE in their classrooms, not to mention the family, friends and colleagues for whom this was a very real loss. And, let's not forget, it was FREE to include since it's from NASA and therefore in the public domain (unclassified and paid for by tax dollars).

Bey and Co. knew exactly what they were doing and just didn't care. All the attention and uproar is still a win. She's not gonna take it out. She should, but she won't.

  23. I think Queen Bey will finally lose her crown. Her statement to ABC News was full of self-entitlement. I don't think breaking up with someone is the emotional equivalent of a space shuttle blowing up. If it is, I'm sorry, but you have issues.
The widow of the Challenger commander, NASA, NASAWatch.com and astronauts have publicly decried this act, yet she's not doing anything.
    I've lost respect for her.

  24. She should respect the wishes of the family members.

  25. Well said @NomNom83

I wasn't alive when Kennedy was assassinated, and to young to more than vaguely remember when Elvis died; but I was a teen in the early 80's and have vivid memories of watching the Challenger explosion on T.V. in math class. It was shocking and horrifying. It helped to shape and define my generation.

To sample the audio in a song and exploit these peoples deaths for ones on monitory gain is repugnant.

But I'm not terribly surprised they're doing it. Just look at who we are talking about. A girl with limited education and a gutter rat who used to sell crack. It's all about the hustle...mo money...mo money.

  26. I remember when the Challenger blew up. My thoughts were with the family of Christa McAuliffe (sp?), the teacher who had been so blessed to have been selected, and who had now been killed in the horrific accident, while her children and husband watched it happen live. That Beyonce would think it acceptable to exploit this is repugnant, to use @Mommabear's term. It's all about the money for her and Jay-Z, and buying their music justifies everything they do. I hope the Karma bus is revving up.

  29. Can't disagree with her. Relationships are hard for so many people. Take a look at David Lynch Interview Project. So many of those people never grieved their relationship loss properly and never recovered. It's more common than we want to know.

Love Bey if only because she refuses to be photographed with KTrash whenever possible.

  32. When Akron, Ohio got a minor league baseball team, it was supposed to be called the Akron Blast, and its mascot, Kaboom. The female astronaut was originally from Akron. There was a huge outcry that the chosen terminology was insensitive and hurtful to her family. A family that no longer lived in the area. So, the name was changed to the Aeros soon after the initial announcement.

As long as everyone talks about them they have accomplished what they set out to do. Miley admitted it in an interview. No respect left for any of them.

  33. Yes, it's tacky, and I don't like Beyonce. I'm more concerned about the way we have elevated the opinions current celebrities to the point that we are calling each other names and starting fights about them. It used to be if a star said something stupid, we rolled our eyes and moved on. Now we hang on Kanye's every word and care about what Beyonce thinks. She's not my style and the world won't end because I don't like her music.

On a side note, the National Geographic Channel is running their series about the 80s and the Challenger bit is on right now. Maybe Bey is watching and getting a lesson.

  39. I think Bey just hasn't had enough hardships in her life to understand that losing a loved one through a tragic death is more gut-wrenching than a broken heart. To her, she sees a connection. She probably should have sought advice from someone who wasn't there as a "yes-man." I lost a parent in a tragic way. I could not imagine having to watch them pass on TV, let alone having any aspect of it used for something so insignificant as a music video. Bey, get some social awareness. I'm not a Jennifer Hudson fan but, given her losses, I guarantee she can differentiate between utter despair and getting your heart ripped out by someone who you realize wasn't shit 10yrs later.

  41. @fancy - Wow you described my memory almost to a tee, except for that I was in second grade. It was confusing and I remember the teachers being especially upset about the teacher who got picked to go. There was a teacher at my school who had tried to be in the program.

  42. I wouldn't be surprised if she does eventually take it out if there is enough of a backlash over it. I can see her saying she wants to be respectful (after getting a lot of flack) and wants to honor the families' wishes.

  43. Yes, breaking up with my boyfriend is the same thing as my loved one getting blown up in the space shuttle.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't really like Beyoncé or care for her music so I have nothing at stake here. But what is the big deal? Artists have been using historical events (usually the bad events) in their work for centuries. Anyone seen a video from the 80's? Lots of news clips and sound bytes were used in music and video to get a point across and no one got offended. I'm not seeing this as a big deal. And besides, it doesn't hurt that the Challenger accident is brought up again. Lots of the people that listen to her music weren't even born then, and it's a good thing to remind them of this.

    ReplyDelete
  45. She's pretty. Unfortunately, she's also an uneducated, marginally talented, self-absorbed cunt and it makes her ugly.

It's no use rushing to her defense, this is indefensible. There are plenty of brilliant artists who wouldn't dream of being so offensive, vulgar, exploitative and entitled.

Beyonce Knowles isn't doing other artists any favors and she doesn't represent them. Maybe she can blame it all on "Sasha Fierce" but it will do her no good. There actually is a limit to what the American public will accept in the cause of a performer generating publicity and Ms. Knowles has found it.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ehhh. Anything for attention.

  47. This is disgusting. The clips of the family members on the "Challenger" watching the shuttle explode are horribly sad. Maybe Beyonce should watch them herself and then she'd feel differently about using that sample. Probably not though.

I was in pre-school when this happened and I remember my teacher telling the class about it. She held up a magazine which had Christa McAuliffe (the teacher who was going into space) on the cover, and showed it around the class. She went on and on about it. Looking back, it was a bit weird how much she was talking about it to a bunch of five-year-olds. I don't know how much any of us understood.

    ReplyDelete

But let's not make a huge deal out of it.

    Karma is a bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  50. No-one will see this. Basically everyone here is calling bullshit on Beyonce's self-definition as an artist. I'm not sure she is either, but this IS a perk of artistic licence. Guernica anyone?

I guess for her next album she will sample some 9/11 or something from a assassination of a Kennedy or MLK.

    ReplyDelete
  53. She's making a statement about the death of Challenger being like the loss of a boyfriend? That disaster, and it was a national disaster affected not only every normal person in this country, but people from all over the world. It was a tragedy that all but shut down our space program. Anyone who defends her brain dead reasoning is too stupid to try to explain what Beyonce did wrong. She's the last person on Earth who empowers women. She's a whiner with no reason to whine.
