Beyonce is Beyonce and she can get away with selling something exclusively through iTunes for a week and have lots of success. The problem she is going to face now is that there are very few places people can actually buy a physical copy of her CD. Target already announced they wouldn't carry it and Amazon joined in this weekend. Both retailers are ticked off at what she did. So, even though Beyonce had record sales this week, she knows the importance of the physical copy still which is why she popped into Wal-Mart who is selling the CD.
What about other artists though? They might think they can have Beyonce numbers and sign an exclusive deal with iTunes and then be screwed when that doesn't go well and then consumers only have Wal-Mart as their main sales option. Yes, independent record stores may also have them and I encourage you to shop at them but they generally only have one or two copies of each CD. Even though you can buy the CD on the Amazon site it is through third party retailers and Amazon will not display the CD unless you search for it by title and spell it exactly right.
In the next few weeks I think you will see Beyonce's sales numbers drop much more rapidly then they would have if she didn't do the deal with iTunes.
Meh, I wasn't buying it anyway.
ReplyDeleteI smell bullshit. I thought maybe they thiught cd too racy or something, but to not sell it because she dared to go her own way?! And i dont like or listen to bey, but i dont like this corporate crapola.
ReplyDeleteOk what exactly did she do??
ReplyDeleteWalmart only sells the 'clean' version of this and other albums, so people who want a physical copy of the dirty version are going to have to do a little bit of online searching.

ReplyDeleteI'm not understanding what exactly happened here. So she signed an exclusive deal with iTunes? Well, then why would there be physical copies being sold anyways?
ReplyDeleteI don't like her and definitely haven't liked anything she's put out since right after Destiny's Child so I could give two shits anyways.
I almost always use third party sellers on Amazon.

ReplyDeleteHard to hate on her for following the $$, when Target and Amazon are pissed at her because they won't see a cut.
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me how talented and pretty Kelly Roland is. She is a very very good singer, she should be the one with the great solo career. Anybody else notice every time Kelly puts out a catchy ass single Beyoncé has to put one out to? I'm tired of everybody acting like they're hip hop royalty. They buy the acts that are better than them (nas) and out them up on a shelf.
ReplyDelete#TeamKelly!!
Deletefrom what I read, the retailers are hesitant to carry it in store bc they are not confident in seeing a real return on their investment. it sold tons on itunes and i guess that makes the targets and amazons wonder whether there will be enough of a real demand for the physical copy that would justify them carrying it
ReplyDeleteJennaYES! Kelly is absolute perfection. Motivation, Love takes over, Representin, everything she puts out is incredible. Her voice blows Bey's out of the water, she has so much power and range. *sigh* can you tell I love Kelly? Beyonce must be doing something to sabotage her behind the scenes for Kelly to not get the rec she deserves.
ReplyDelete@J *muahh* kisses I love love love Kelly. And it's so rare that somebody else sees it.
Delete@Jenna & JSierra: I see it too. I love Kelly. She is prettier and talented and deserves way more recognition. Motivation is my favorite song of hers.
DeleteThanks for the deciphering Bella. Got it. I miss liner notes. Those could be amazing treasure troves of information and just wonderful writing. Once they got rid of those it wasn't worth buying the physical copy anyway.
ReplyDeleteThey need to bring back the double album, so kids can properly clean the stems and seeds from their weed. Who Didn't use either Frampton Comes Alive, KISS Alive!, or Seger's Live Bullet to sort their weed?
ReplyDeleteWe used a Frisbee, Charlie.
DeleteWe just throw everything but big stems seeds in a grinder.
DeleteThere are tons of CDs sold at Best Buy, easy option

ReplyDeleteGet the fuck outta here. When's the last time any of us bought an actual cd? I look at ppl with CD players on the subway and I feel bad for them. I feel like donating an old iPod to them. So this story is fucking dumb. Marry Xmas. Less retard logic pls.
ReplyDelete@singleman..."I look at ppl with CD players on the subway and feel sorry for them." Lol I do too!
DeleteMy last CD purchase was either GET RICH OR DIE TRYING/50 cent...or...God's Son/ Nas
That was YEARS ago.
Okay I am one of the old schoolers.
ReplyDeleteIf you like the quality of the sound, and I have an iPod which I use on vacations only, nothing to me sounds better than my physical CD, with my big old kick ass speakers. Ask yourself why vinyl has come back in vogue.
To me all the MP3 players and downloaded files from iTunes, the quality of the sound has less dimension, flat, less clear.
Maybe with overproduced music it's not a big deal.
I have downloaded an album or song on iTunes then based on that gone out and bought the physical CD though usually waiting for a good sale. We are old but apparently my age group buys the most music now.
And some of us have CD players in the car and like to use our CDs in the car.
As a customer that would be at Target asking for the new Beyonce CD (which would never really happen) and being told they did not carry it would just piss me off and I would drive to a Best Buy and probably skip shopping at the electronics dept. at Target from there on cause they don't carry the products I want. Very bad business decision on their behalf...
ReplyDeleteI'm wrong. It was: graduation day/ Kanye
ReplyDeleteI still buy CDs and have an ipod etc. I collect them and have hundreds since a teen but I do not buy them as much as when I was younger
ReplyDeleteMy car has no adapter for my phone, so I buy my music on there then burn them for my car.
ReplyDeleteBey's new album is just mehhh anyway. Glad I listened to it at a friend's b/c its not that good.
i hate exclusives retailers, i hate how every other store has different bonus tracks for cds
ReplyDeletemakes me just want to download for free
When's the last time I bought at physical CD? This morning. I wanted to listen to KISS' The Elder so went and got it and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy Deluxe Edition.
ReplyDeleteFuck digital! I want something I own and can loan to friends, resell or just hold in my hand. Can't stand this whole Digital world where the consumer is at the mercy of the company that sells the product. Except GOG..com They are the only people that treat digital goods as physical goods and say "You bought it, you own it. Make copies, put it on multiple computers, share it with your family and friends, whatever, you own the game you bought."
I still buy physical copies of CDs--though you will never, ever, see me buy a Beyonce album--on places like Ebay and Half.com so that the record companies don't see a dime of my money. Then I rip my favorite music myself and load it to my media player.
ReplyDeleteMp3s will never sound as great as a CD, it's a lossy format, but .ape and .flac are far superior quality. And for those times when I can't listen to an actual CD, my media players are a godsend; I can wear my Clip+ while I mow the yard, work in the garden, etc., and still have my music.
I am intrigued Elissa though this oldie never heard of Clip+. I will google, that I can do quite well.
ReplyDeleteThey have every right to not carry it. I live next door to Berkeley and all the bigger yet indie chains here aren't carrying the CD either. It was like a slap in the face to them to have iTunes carry a week exclusive and all other retailers could not even advertise it or take preorders for it. And for the record I know people who downloaded the album AND bought the CD.
ReplyDeletePeople actually buy CDs these days?
ReplyDeleteGosh, I feel old. This reminds me of the CD vs vinyl debate of my teenage years. I never thought I would read or hear that people prefer CDs to digital. Oh, how CDs have fallen.
ReplyDeleteI buy CDs and vinyl too, especially of my 70s and 80s music.
I don't think it's Bey's problem if another band signs a similar deal. I bought the album and have been listening to it non stop - it's all about banging it but it's so so so good.
