Not damned thing. The companies starting their sales on Thanksgiving are a bunch of dicks. People that go shop those sales and expect other people to be away from their families so they can get $10 jeans really need to re-evaluate their priorities and not be such assholes.
Chris Hemsworth, 1 hour Mimosa, 10 min Coffee, BREW FASTER, KEURIG
Other than that, completely agree with Zeeky & Disco. Black Friday actually used to be fun waaaay back in the day when Target opened at 6AM and gave out goodie bags to the first 500 customers with GCs and fun stuff. Now it starts two weeks before the actual day, stores begin their "Black Friday" sales at 6AM Thanksgiving morning, people are being trampled to death and fighting over $3 Walmart toasters.
I would love for Anonymous to do a Cyber Monday DDOS attack, or something, on every retailer who was open on Thanksgiving. That would be the most awesomest thing ever.
@Bacon, and you want to know what sucks even more? They don't get any special pay like time and a half or bonuses or anything. They're peons.
Friend of mine was a manager at Best Buy and last year he pulled 14 days of 12 hour shifts. Black Friday weekend, he saw his family (wife and two young sons) for maybe 3 hours a day between working and sleeping, and the visit to Urgent Care for stitches after an idiot tried to cut into the huge line and clocked him with a metal camp chair. Back to work and then again on Saturday managing the returns section.
He said quitting BB was the best choice he ever made.
They get paid extra and think about airlines, hospitals, gas stations etc. they are always worked on holidays. I really don't get why people get bent out if shape about stores opening then.
Food Lion is paying time and a half? That shocks me... I have three friends that worked for them, and during holidays their hours would get cut so management could get larger bonuses. The three didn't know each other and lived in different areas, but had the same story.
Our stores don't open on Thanksgiving but most of them will be open from 7 am til 10:30 or 11 Friday.
In our stores salaried people--i.e. store managers and dept managers work a 6 day week from mid-November through Christmas--they DO get some comp time off after the holidays--most of them take days off between Dec 27 and New Years to pay them back. Retail is a hard way to make a living. I am so glad I'm old now and have moved to a mostly office side of the business. I did it for 30 years.
The worst part is Thanksgiving is supposed to be about celebrating what you have and the people that you love. Now you gotta cut that short, so you can pile-drive strangers for a $99 TV.
AJ & Jade Tennant, hands down. I'd wait hours then make him take me back in time or something :)
Seven, that's awful. I had a couple of buddies who worked at Burlington. Somehow corporate worked it out that if they clocked out after working x amount of hours (down to the minute) they wouldn't be eligible for time and a half. This is the same trick companies ues so that employees aren't eligible for benefits. Nickle and dime process. I've had it happen,I'm sure plenty of people have. "Hey, you went over your hours this week" (that's because you scheduled me over my hours, dumbass) "So here's what we can do. You put down this amount of hours and next week, work less but add in the other hours you have already worked. Okay?"
Nada. I would rather pay full price than wait in a long line with rude moronic types. Im sure ther would be cool chill people in the line but theres always a few morons who have yo ruin it for everyone.
@Jade & Bacon ... Got it all figured out. Tennant drops in and pickups Bacon, than grabs me and lastly scoops up you. Three is the prefect number of companions :-)
I love David Tennant! He was in one of Mika Kaurismäki's films, "LA Without a Map." Leningrad Cowboys were also in it -- you really can't ask for more! Oh, and Johnny Depp has a kind of neat cameo appearance in it.
Maybe if they were filming a sequel with both Tennant and LC, I'd stand in line for that.
There are certain industries for which I think one expects to work on Thanksgiving: hospitals, airlines, gas stations... hell, even movie theaters. Working retail on this holiday is a whole other special level of cut-throat hell.
I bet the people fighting over crap from WalMart at 7am on Thanksgiving and the people who bitch about me saying "Happy Holidays" (calling it a war on Christmas) occupy the same area in a Venn diagram. IRONY!
Snapdragon - A fun game is to go to FoxNews.com and search "Christmas." You'll be rewarded with several articles on the terrible War on Christmas, and how evil it is when people use the word "Holiday" instead.
Normally I am willing to wait about 5 minutes. I won't be going out this Friday, and there is no way in hell I am buying a thing on Thursday. I hate that stores are now opening on Thanksgiving, way to ruin everyone's holiday.
My brother has to work on Thanksgiving as does my SIL, neither one is getting more pay. I won't support any store that is open on the holidays, it is obvious all they care about is money. No reason stores can't open at 6 am on Friday. It won't be long until most stores start staying open on Christmas.
I shop online most of the time, but I don't begrudge stores that are open. When I was a young retail store grunt, I was just glad for the extra hours and lived too far away from my family to be able to afford to see them at that time anyway. Sometimes I got time and a half, sometimes I didn't, but I almost always worked Christmas and then did a faux-Ukranian Christmas two weeks later when it was cheaper to travel. Later on I worked for companies that would shut down for two weeks over the holidays, that was worse. No money for two weeks at the most expensive time of the year sucks.
I gave up shopping for Christmas years ago because no one appreciated my gifts. I stopped giving gift cards too, because they would just lose them. Now I just give cash. No one every looses cash. But I never hear a thank you, so I'm thinking about giving nothing and see if anyone notices.
I will NOT participate in Black Thursday, as it's becomming. F-that!
ReplyDeleteI don't do lines
ReplyDeleteThe Tardis.
ReplyDeleteDepends on the Dr.
@Bacon Send the Doctor my way when he's done picking you up.
DeleteNothing I shop online on Monday
ReplyDeleteA new butt. Mine has a hole in it.
ReplyDeleteI would stand in line to help someone out -- not to get a cheap deal surrounded by a ton of greedy assholes.
ReplyDeleteBy 2020, Thanksgiving's gonna be whittled down to a packet of turkey lunchables eaten in the parking lot of a Walmart.
ReplyDeleteGood call, zeeky

ReplyDelete+ a million. People have totally messed up priorities.

Screw that.
I'll be working on packing orders from the small website I run. So no standing around for me.
ReplyDeleteI call this time of year my corporate workout program.
I saw an ad earlier Seven about a store beginning BF at 8p tomorrow (Thursday) night.
ReplyDeleteI bet those employees are beeeeeeeyond thrilled.
WalMart is starting their deals at 6pm which mean folk will have to be on hand at least 2hrs prior and others setting up throughout the day.
DeleteWhich Doctor? Ten or Eleven?
ReplyDelete@Jade I'd prefer Tennant but would take any of the 13 tbh.
DeleteI would love for Anonymous to do a Cyber Monday DDOS attack, or something, on every retailer who was open on Thanksgiving. That would be the most awesomest thing ever.
ReplyDeleteOhhhhh, that would be awesome!!!!
DeleteBrand new tricked out car for $100.00. So, you know, never for nothing.
ReplyDeleteNothing.
ReplyDeleteI have worked in retail forever and will be working behind the scenes helping resolve pricing problems, etc that come up from our stores.
I went out last weekend and did a big grocery shop so I won't even need to go out for food.
Sheesh--check out these stores that are open on Thursday. This is crazy.

That surprises me. My kid is part time at Food Lion and she's getting time and a half tomorrow.

Seven of Eleven - That was fun back then... I remember going to Toys Я Us and getting free Pokémon stuff at 6am Friday. (Bulbasaur is the Best!)

ReplyDeleteGuess I'd have company in line for Tennant too!

ReplyDeleteIn the off chance that the apocalypse were to occur, a gun, knife, food, water and a shovel, other than that, nothing.
ReplyDelete@AJ
ReplyDeleteFine by me going last as long as he says, "I don't want to go," when it's over...
I love David Tennant! He was in one of Mika Kaurismäki's films, "LA Without a Map." Leningrad Cowboys were also in it -- you really can't ask for more! Oh, and Johnny Depp has a kind of neat cameo appearance in it.

My new love it Benedict Cumberbatch. I'd stand in a shorter line for Martin Freeman.

I'm shopping small-business Saturday and keeping it local.
ReplyDelete^^^^^^^^^THIS!
ReplyDeleteI will be waiting in line in toys r us for the $15 dream lights.
ReplyDelete@snapdragon hit the nail on the head!
