Jamie Dornan Is Christian Grey

Last night when I Tweeted that Jamie Dornan is the new Christian Grey there was not the outcry there was when Charlie Hunnam was cast. I don't know if this is because a bunch of Jamie fans took to twitter or if Jamie's name had been tossed out in the wind like a balloon waiting for the public to get ready for the announcement so every one already looked the guy up and was ok with the decision.

I agree that this role is going to define someone and I'm not sure it will be in a good way. Just because something is massively popular as a book does not mean it will translate to the box office. There are lots of books that turn into bombs. Clive Cussler has sold millions of books but the one or two to make it to screen have sucked. I think the studio would love for this to be a franchise which means Jamie will be locked into playing the same character for a great deal of time and cement the character in the public's mind. That can be bad.

The Secretary was a one off and it can be said that Maggie Gyllenhaal's career has suffered since. Imagine if she had to play the character three or four more times over the course of a decade. Think she would be typecast?

  2. I have managed to not read this but I can't seem to escape it. Once anyone hears I am an avid reader, they always jump and ask if I've read this.
I want to roll my eyes at them but can't knock anyone for reading.

    1. YES. It pains me when I see friends who otherwise don't regularly read any types of literature reading this crap. I just want to beg and plead for them not lol. I am by no means a literary snob, there are just so many great contemporary works that are ignored and this crap is the sensation? Yuck

    2. Yes !!!
      I million times yes !!!

I've had to politely walk away from many group conversations this summer as to not insult people. It's soooo hard though, when there are such better choices out there.

  5. Really, what else was Jamie Dornan doing with his time? Was he going to be a huge star and now 'Fifty Shades' will get in his way? If he's got a smart manager, they'll set up a lot of tie-ins and he'll cash in while the going is good.

Besides, in some cases movies are much better than the books they're based on. Jaws, Jurassic Park, Fight Club, The Godfather....arguably even Gone with the Wind.

    1. JP was much better as a book, IMO.

    2. JP was definitely a much better book and the fact that Michael Crichton re-wrote the sequel to match the movie just summed up everything wring with the world. I may have been too attached. I disagree about Jaws, though, great book. Love most of Peter Benchley

    3. The Godfather was a much better book than movie.

    4. Yes !!!
JP was an amazing book. Read after Insaw the movie when I was 14 and loved it even more !!!
Most books are far better than the movie but there are some exceptions including GWTW. Another was 'What Dreams May Come' with Robin Williams. The movie was visually breathtaking and heart wrenching at the same time. The book, not so much.

  7. You haven't heard much because they announced it late in the night and the old birds who are fans of this were already off to bed to imagine Matt Bomer while touching their lady parts.

Can we talk about more important things? Like Ja Rule's new microwave cookbook?

  9. I didn't know that Maggie ever really had a career. She falls in the Michelle Williams "never seen anything they were in, and don't really care to" category.

Thank you to Ms. VIP! She's so very good to us.

  12. I read the first two and started the third and never finished it. While they're not wonderfully written I get tired of people shaming readers if this series. Everyone should read trash every now and then. :)

    1. Yes trash is ok from time to time but when it's the only thing being read, what's the point ? I really do try very hard not to knock people's choices of reading but it seems like such a waste of brainpower to read only that stuff.

My friends gifted me the whole Twillight series when I was doped up on morphine from my tonsils being removed. I found the series hysterical yet enjoyable. It's was a fun read but has sat on my self since.

  13. Man I was so disappointed when I read Gone with the Wind in high school. That book sucked and Scarlet was such a class A bitch with a ton of kids I couldn't keep track of.

Another book that was much better as a movie was The Wonder Boys. The movie cut out all the dumb stuff like the Jewish Korean in-laws and made the protagonist, Grady Tripp, so much better than the book did.

Maybe 50 Shades of Puke will be redeemed as a movie, but I doubt it.

    1. @Henriette, agreed about GWTW. She had 3 kids in that book, as I recall, none of whom she was particularly interested in. And the role of the Ku Klux Kan was much more explicit. Scarlett's second husband, Frank Kennedy, was part of a Klan raid on a black settlement after Scarlett was attacked there (and rescued by one of her former slaves.) The movie glosses over this.

    2. Disagree with Wonder Boys. The movie was not good, Chabon's work does not translate well to the screen.

*refusing to make eye contact* I read Gone With The Wind. Three times.

  14. I don't mind people reading trash, heck, you should read trash! My complaint is with how poorly written these books are, or what I could manage to get through. So, so bad. It should be a train wreck.

    1. I haven't even tried. Twillight series was hysterical to me but that could have been the morphine I was on from having my tonsils removed. LOL.

If it's worse than that, well I have no hope of getting through it without falling into fits of laughter.

  17. Secretary was a dark comedy and in no way the same league as this sure-to-be turd. If anything that movie helped Maggie G's career.

  18. Noooooo! Matt Bomber! He's got the smolder down pat. What a waste.

  20. Noooo!! I wanted Harry to be Ana & Liam to be Christian! 1D 4eva!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I had a conversation with a friend about this just the other night. She was adamant that Charlie Hunnman would have sucked as Christian, and my argument was that the movie was just going to suck anyway no matter who they hired to play the characters because no one can live up to each and every person's mental image of the lead characters. They should just let the project die and use the money to fund a vasectomy for Tori Spelling's husband.

  22. Rather than pay money for this book or movie, take $30 and get a 1 month membership to SexAndSubmission.com. If you want a little more intensive fare, instead of a plethora of roleplaying S&M, then TheTrainingOfO.com would be for you. I notice they have a series up of Adriana Chechik. Everyone knows no place makes dirtier sluts than Philly. I may have to renew my membership for that one.

If you are a woman who prefers to be the aggressor, then DivineBitches.com and all of its sub men would be right up your alley. MenInPain.com is allegedly a step further into the darkness.

Basically, if you have an interest in kink, don't wait for some movie that will fall way short of expectations. Explore the quality, no holes barred filth that is already out there. With $30 and ample hard drive space, you can have enough BDSM material to last you months, if not years of viewing. SexAndSubmission.com advertises over 350 shoots equaling over 300hours of content.

  23. How many opinions can Enty have on 50 shades of Grey's adaptation?
Jamie has nothing to lose to act Grey and he fits better than Charlie in Grey
I read the first book ,it was difficult to finish the second book and i never finish the last book: it's bad written

  24. Maybe this shit will be the hottest movie anyone has ever seen and we can all look back and laugh at how cynical we all were before this movie changed our lives.

  25. Maggie's career suffered? Huh, who knew.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ahhh...thank you VIP...lol

I think 50 Shades will be a revved and ramped up 6 1/2 or is it 9 1/2 weeks (?) movie so if the two actors have hot chemistry it will be successful, if not it will suck, imho, the books will not matter at that point.

Gone with the Wind is one of my all time favorite books!

    ReplyDelete
  27. No, Gyllenhaal's career definitely did not suffer after "Secretary". Her choices in film are all over the place, I'll give you that, but it was no "Showgirls".

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have no clue who this guy is and i havent seen him in anything. Hes hot but so is over half of hollywood. I couldnt get through any of those grey books...maybe you have to be an old lady to really get into those books. All the old ladies at my job were salivating over that book. I read probably less than a quarter and i was bored. Its a wash and repeat novel. He fucks her in a barn, spanks her in a room, spanks her in a car. Yawn , yawn and more yawn . I have to admit though that im a big horror fiction reader. Give me a good stephen king or dean koontz novel and im a happy girl.

  29. Btw, i LOVED the secretary. James spader was such an evil sexy beast when he was younger. That movie and 9 1/2 weeks are my favorite borderline s&m movies. Mickey rourke was yummy in those days too.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I had no idea Maggie Gyllenhaal's career has suffered either. Secretary put her on the map. She's not a huge movie star, but considering how many small indies she does it doesn't appear that she wants to be one. She's got a great resume - Stranger Than Fiction, The Dark Knight, Crazy Heart. What are you smoking, Ent(ies)?

  31. I think of reading the same way I think about chocolate: necessary for life. Sometimes you want the soul nourishing ethically sourced conflict-free70% cacao bar(your pulitzer prize winners), sometimes what you need is the bag of broken off-brand o'henry bars that Woolworth's used to sell ( your Harlequin romances). Its all reading!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Secretary did put Maggie on the map-made her different and a serious character actress rather than an ingenue

I can see Jamie D. in this role-although he is much too talented for it. Maybe he can actually elevate it a little and it won't be so ridiculously bad

Charlie would have totally sucked.....great decision on his part

  35. I'm not particularly interested in 50 Shades, but I just watched The Fall on Netflix last week...mostly because I love Gillian Anderson....and this guy played the serial killer--and he was really good. I haven't seen him in anything else but he gave an excellent performance in that series.

  36. At least this guy fits the description of Christian Grey. I don't know wtf they were think with blondie Charlie Hunnam- not to mention hes not even a little bit gorgeous, which Christian is supposed to be. AND when every was suggesting ASkarsgard.. WTF! LOL Another goofy looking blonde.

  37. Didn't read the books and I don't know who this guy is, at all. Taking all that into consideration, I'll probably see the movie. I don't want to read the books and have an idea of who the main character should be, then be disappointed when he's not who I thought he should be. Case in point, John Travolta in The General's Daughter. Jeanne Tripplehorne (sp?) in The Firm. Both were books made into movies and both characters weren't what they should have been.
I'll wait for the movie, even if I have to wait for Netflix, and in the privacy of my own home. LOL

  38. For my 40th I asked people to give me their favourite book, or one of their favourite books. One of them I received was Gone With The Wind. I had read it when I was younger, but I got so much more out of it reading it again when I had life experience behind me. Scarlett was the first popular anti-hero(ine) in literature. It was a book very ahead of its time.

  39. @feral, that's a great idea for a birthday gift! I'll have to remember that one!

  40. I have the whole Twilight series. They're fun reading, but I never became a TwiMom or watched any of the movies.

It's when you make this crap your reason for existence is where the problem is.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I might steal that 'books as gifts' idea too, for my 50th.

I met Jamie back in March, he's a friend of a friend. We got to chat for a few minutes about his role as Sheriff Graham on Once Upon a Time. He was super, super sweet. He had that laid back, unbothered vibe about him, and his fiancee did as well (I felt so bad, I didn't realize until hours later that I had hardly said a word to her). They are married now and expecting a child, and this role, with a potential for a trilogy of films would set them financially. Other than that, I have no opinion of it all. Never read the books, probably never will, probably never see the films. Just really happy for JD and his family.

  43. GWTW is in my top 3 ever. Have read it countless times. Also, Lonesome Dove. Agree about JP being a fabulous book. I miss Michael Crichton so much.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Loved GWTW.

I don't see this guy as Christian Grey at all, I don't even find him attractive. Charlie Hunnam would have been great but I thought the real casting fail was Dakota Johnson, who sadly, isn't even pretty. I hate to say it but Kristen Stewart, hated though she is, would have made a better Anastasia...she has the awkward thing down from Twilight.

The 50 shades books are horrifically written but if you write anything tapping into the primary female fantasy - a filthy rich, generous, handsome and sexy man falling in love with plain old you - you are going to make money off of it. The movie will most likely be a huge hit.

  45. Yeah Secretary did not hurt Maggie at all. That is the movie I always hear about the most when talking about her best roles. Better than her Batman role.

  46. @MerryB
The Wonder Boys as a novel was like reading someone's bad MFA thesis. It had very overwritten cliche in it. It's Chabon's weakest work, which is why I'm surprised it became a film. I'll take the movie over that any time.
