Charlie Hunnam Drops Out Of Fifty Shades Of Grey

Yesterday Charlie Hunnam decided that he wanted a career and not just a quick franchise that will typecast him so he never gets to do anything like Sons Of Anarchy again so he dropped out of Fifty Shades Of Grey. When the announcement was made that Charlie and Dakota Johnson were attached to the movie I told you that he would come up with something in a month or two to get him out of it and it would most likely be scheduling conflicts. The reason given yesterday? Scheduling conflicts. I actually thought Dakota would pull out by now too but I guess no one has approached her with any possible television projects. I think she is much more suited for television despite her failed show last year. I think maybe she has been caught up in the publicity and attention and I know she has been hanging around some of the producers and giving as many interviews as possible. I hope she sees the light and bails.

  1. Plenty of unknowns around who have nothing to lose and would be happy to star in this project, bad dialogue and all. Somebody's working as a cater waiter today who will be Christian Grey tomorrow.

  2. Smart guy, no actor who wants a long career should touch this. Get two unknowns, make a bad movie, and let it disappear.

  3. Finally he read the books

  4. WTF the filming will start next month

  5. Agree HR Lady. The book is crap, a frustrated vanilla cat lady's idea of what bdsm might be. If the source material is crap, the movie can't help but be crap. Hunnam is smart and would be both painfully buttonholed and ridiculed if he had stayed in the role. Dakota doesn't have a future except for her famous parents. Hunnam does have a future. Smart move.

  6. I love him on SOA but he still looks a little douchey for even accepting the role in the first place- and now not any better for changing mind prior to shooting.

  7. The books are a phenomenon though - mommy porn, everyone buying them, what does it all mean- then a year or so later- this is crap 'vanilla cat lady's idea of what bdsm might be'. We can be a fickle bunch.

    1. I tried to read a few pages out of the first one, (can't believe they made more), and couldn't believe it got published, let alone blew up! I've read more believable, and better written crap in Penthouse Forum. What is wrong with the women who like this garbage? Are women that sexually unfulfilled? I just don't get it, at all.

Agree w Michael K, Hunnam finally got around to reading the book, and ghosted.

  8. Poor guy had to be escorted by security guards because of threats. I bet he felt the weight lifted off his shoulders.
Even the SoA cast were surprised.
Alex Pettyfer was the only actor interested in this role. They should have given it to him. He just signed up to be a gay action hero so that probably won't happen now.
The p0rn parody version should have been able to stay on the market.

    1. Ian Somerhalder was all but BEGGING for this role for a long, long time.

    2. Oh, yeah. He did hint he would take it if asked. Still think it's a bad idea.

    3. If by hinting you mean tweeting about it constantly and forming an alliance with Bret Easton Ellis to write and star in it, then yes, he may have floated the idea out there

  9. Yeah if the original material isn't very good imagine how crappy it would be when H'wd tries to write it. There is no script doctor in the world that could make that shit any good. Imagine having to say the lines. Impossibly hard.

  10. @texas..the writing is awful, the books were just a fad that people felt compelled to follow, the vanilla set being made aware these types of stories exist and jumping on a bandwagon. I couldn't get past the first chapter, the writing was so bad. There are well written bdsm books out there, and have been for years, if someone is actually interested in a real book. I suggest people start with Anne Rice's series, under her pseudonym RN Roquelaure. Also check out Molly Weatherfield's books.

    1. Cosign. By being marketed as "mommy porn," it's what got everyone so riled up. Just because everyone bought it, it doesn't mean everyone liked it.
I downloaded the Kindle sampler and couldn't get through it.
Also check out Cleis Press. They've been publishing high quality BDSM-themed books for years.

    2. Didn't Hollywood fuck up on of Rice's "Exit to Eden"- they turned it into some comedy with Rosie O'Donnell. Liked the book but hated the movie.

    3. For the love of all that is holy, DO NOT read the Anne Roquelaure books if you are not hardcore into BDSM for reals. Or into incredibly repetitive writing. Or anyone who likes ponies! Won't someone please think of the PONIES!!!

    4. I though hearing there was such a thing as "dinosaur erotica" was the worst thing of the week. Nope, ponies.

  11. Had to look up who was writing the screenplay. Few credits to her name but she did write "Saving Mr. Banks," the movie Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson are starring in that's coming out in December.

  12. Best decision ya ever made, Charlie! Those books suuuuck and written so poorly. EL James and Dan Brown should be exiled to an island somewhere so they can't inflict their shitty mcshit writing upon the world.

    1. Jolenesquared: I agree, I think their writing is similar, prose at it's purplest

  13. If the movie was rated R, the screenwriter loosely based it on the book, and then made it dark and artsy in a 9 1/2 Weeks f*cked up kind of way, it might have a chance.

  14. I co-sign HR Lady.

Anne Rice wrote some kinky shit but she is a good writer. You can even buy some pretty entertaining trashy erotic fiction fairly easily. And I would readily admit to reading that stuff but no power on earth could get me to read the 50 Shades crap.

  16. The female screenwriter adapting the script is also a production partner with Tom Hardy in the UK, he's just started his own production company so she gets brownie points for being British and having the trust of Tom Hardy who has good taste and judgment regarding scripts. She must really love challenges however. I agree with Hits123, the only way this will work is if you make it a loose adaptation but then you piss off all the vanilla cat ladies.

Clearly Hunnam saw nothing in the script that reassured him.

  17. I read it, read it all. It is basically a romance novel with some graphic sex (and a TAMPON! why????!!). I love how a million sold a week but no one online has ever read it ever.

  18. I enjoyed the first two books but not the third - then everyone got crazy about the series and I lost interest. For the record I'm not a mommy and I hate cats. I've read the Beautiful Bastard series which is also a twilight based fan fiction and enjoyed them. Light hearted summer books - better writing than FSOG and the women in the books aren't this stupid doe-eyed stereotype that these books seem to portray.

Thanks for the warning. I haven't read any of Anne Rice's pony porn and now I know to stay away.

  21. I think after a few meetings Charlie saw the writing on the wall. It went from being pitched as a gritty, psycho-sexual indie film. To a Hollywood gloss over, slap and dash and make some mega cash for the Studio.

Charlie didn't work for years before SOA because of the quality of the scripts. He almost lost his house because of it.

And, Entster, he wasn't looking for just a hit franchise, fame and obsessed fans. Charlie is agoraphobic. You won't see him on any red carpet unless he is part of the movie or show. Even then he doesn't look to comfortable.

I know these movies will come out regardless. But I am hoping the first movie bombs and ends it.

    1. Agreed.I think he had high hopes of successfully portraying a character that's so damaged. But they'd probably gloss over much of that anyway.

If Charlie could act and never have to promote,do an interview or press in his life,I think he'd be the happiest man in Hollywood.

  23. I work for a *cough* fledgling online retailer *cough* and something observed is the consistent prescence of so-called "mommy porn" or romance novels atop our e-book bestsellers. The prevailing thought is that this category is entering a renaissance of sorts because people can read from the privacy of their e-readers and no one is the wiser...book covers be damned.

FSOG was a perfect storm (borne out of a popular series, the burgeoning ubiquitousness of the e-reader, a lull in the women's fiction category, the mild foray into beam) destined to be the hit it became. Is it great literature? No, but popular fiction rarely is.

In terms of the film? It could be good, great even. There are many great movies out there based upon mediocre books!

  24. I'm a huge fan of his, and I found this really surprising that he even agreed in the first place. He's said several times that he is kind of choosy and likes to be known more seriously. This wasn't going to help that at all. Though I did want to see him butt ass naked. Mmmmmm.

I'm hoping one day he'll win one of the awards

  25. I hope this makes all those naysayers happy and I hope someone like Gilbert Gottfried gets the role opposite Kathy Griffin or something.
    That'll teach em!

  28. I just couldn't see Hunnam as Christian Grey, just the wrong look altogether. Whether or not the movie will be any good who knows. I just hope that they roll all the books into one and don't make a trilogy, just not enough meat per say.

  29. @VIP, ... jaw dropped... I think you have outdone yourself.

@V, you work for Amazon, I take it? :) I completely agree with the no one sees my Kindle cover concept. It's like Internet porn vs magazine porn, you can erase the cache and mom won't find it under your mattress.

I, for one, am not too upset about the mommy porn/ebook business. FSOG is a walking advertisement for freelance editors.

Hey, Canucks, happy Thanksgiving! Mmmm, turkey!

I have to disagree with this. For two months my FB feed was all about FSoG, From women of all ages, mothers and daughters discussing it, swapping books, so many people updating their statuses about going home to jump their partner after reading... ugh
Sadly, I don't think many people showed the proper amount of shame for reading this crap.

  31. @Seven, I do :)

I think the ebook biz is great. It's great to see the emergence of a variety of authors...mommy porn and otherwise :)

  32. 50 Shades was re-worked, extremely bad Twilight fanfic, so I guess it had a built-in audience of, er, less than intelligent and/or discerning readers ready to lap it up. With these credentials, though, any movie made from it would be automatic total crap. How could Hunnam and his handlers not see this from the beginning?

He really dodged a bullet there.

  38. It's been many years since I read the Anne Rice Sleeping Beauty series, but now I might revisit it. I do remember the pony play. There were no actual ponies harmed in the making of this story. :) The stories were kind of fun.

  40. I hope Charlie fired his agent and manager for talking him into this mess. I refuse to believe he signed on to this movie because he thought it was a good idea and he liked the material.

For me to continue to love and respect him, I have to believe his business team talked him into this... Please, no one burst my bubble on this...

    1. @Unknown He should give his team a raise. He got 2x the publicity, a pat on the back for having the foresight to bail on this mess, and he doesn't have to star in it. Hunnam wins all around.

  41. Just letting the world know that you were THE choice for that role, then saying, "um, I changed my mind," is the most brilliant publicity stunt ever!

  43. Smart move. I couldn't get through twilight and I couldn't get through this awful twilight fanfic either. The writing might actually be worse than Twilight, which I thought was impossible for anything that wasn't published on a vanity press.

This movie shouldn't be made. It can only be total shit.

  44. I'm thinking a lot of y'all betches got burned on 50 Shades hype like I got burned on Blair Witch hype. Atleast you only had to read a chapter and not sit through an hour plus cause you were too stoned to drive home.

  45. Speakink of self published e-books, I read an article today about some joint that shut their website down until they figure out how to keep people from selling their porn stories on there. Seems there were pedo and beastie stories on there. I think it was in England.

  46. I loved sleeping beauty (the first one). Once the second one got into bestiality I stopped reading...maybe I should revisit.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I honestly don't remember anything about bestiality in those books. I only remember the people pretending to be ponies. Did I block it out?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Um, there were no actual ponies in the Ann Rice books, just dudes with horse tails. And so, so much other gross stuff (sorry, judgy) that was so repetitive that is was really only interesting as the basis for a drinking game: oh, Beauty's lost in herself again, take a shot, dudes are impaled again, take another shot, somebody's panting with need, take one more! Blergh
