Paula Deen Gets Standing Ovation In Houston
Over 1500 people rose to their feet in Houston over the weekend and gave Paula Deen a TEN minute standing ovation as she made her first public appearance since being publicly accused of being a racist and admitting to using the N word and basically just being an all around awful human being to anyone of color.
Paula appeared at the Metro Cooking And Entertaining Show in Houston and broke down in tears as the people of Houston just kept getting louder and louder for Paula. I know that I would not jump to my feet for Paula. I'm not going to clap for her. I'm sure not going to give my money to support her. Apparently things in Houston are different and being a racist is not that big of a deal to at least those 1500 people who stood and cheered a much thinner looking Paula.
Paula had this to say to the crowd. "These are tears of joy, y'all. I've said all along that the one place I'd want to make my first step back out is Texas. Y'all's hearts are as big as your state."
Paula's next stop is the KKK convention where she will be presented with their lifetime achievement award and she will hold cooking demonstrations on what pairs nicely with a cross burning.
Well that says a lot about Texas
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you could find 1500 racists in most cities, lets keep everyone else in Texas out of this.
DeleteKind of hoping we'd seen the last of this fat, ugly, ignorant loudmouth piece of shit.
ReplyDeleteIdk. I still think it was more her brother than her. Everyone has said something inappropriate privately. Other celebs have acted worse.
ReplyDeleteNext time Texas tries to secede we should let them.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Houston for a number of years once, and both it and Austin are very different from the rest of the state in how liberal minded they are. Of course, there are always exceptions to every rule, and so begins the Paula Dean comeback I suppose. Whatever.
ReplyDeleteGod..get over it already...she's already been crucified for this..now anything more is just stirring the ashes... I don't like her language choices either but I admire how she admitted her mistake and didn't just rush off to 'rehab' like the other celebrities do when caught in a PR disaster.
ReplyDeleteMama, yes, but why giving her standing o? What has she done to deserve that? Sorry, that makes me think less of Houston, and texas.
Delete+1 I may not agree with her views but I admire how she stood her ground, admitted her mistake unapologetically and took the heat without some bullshit spin story.
DeleteI can't stand this annoying bitch, ya'all!
ReplyDeleteDeen is also a huge hero to Republicans in Georgia, who see her as a hero who speaks the truth.
ReplyDeleteThose are tears of butter y'all!!! *mayjah eyeroll*...
ReplyDelete@Barton Fink
ReplyDeleteThat fiqures.....
Please don't stereotype all Texans because I'm from Houston and I was born and raised here...and these fucktards that paid to see her racist ass do not speak for me or any other non-racist individual. I already got into too many heated debates with the racist people at my job that are still backing her up and wanted to buy tickets to this event but couldn't because it sold out in like 15 minutes! She's an embarrassment to the human race....gives Southerners a bad name and I can't blame people for assuming we're all like that when they read articles like this. ugh!!
ReplyDeleteThis audience was not a random sample of people. Who else but Paula Deen supporters would come to see Paula Deen?
ReplyDelete@mama, I am not gonna "get over it," thanks very much. Once a racist pig, always a racist pig.
The suit was thrown out, she apologized, her empire has crumbled. What more does anyone want?!?!
ReplyDeleteI tend to live my life forgiving others, so honestly, I hope she rebounds. A lot of people probably lost their jobs in her business due to this.
Hopefully, she will change her ways. The whole story really annoys me, because the media can just pick and choose who to burn at the stake, and well, she was the one this summer. Whatever.
Do you care about black people? Serious question.
DeleteWhat a dumb argument. Yeah, lets turn it into a over-simplified 'youre with us or against us' debate. The preferred method of ignorant uninformed people. No wonder intelligent conversation is becoming extinct.
DeleteBut it IS that simple. Paula is a racist. Or she condoned her brother being a racist. Either way, theres a problem here. It is one thing to not care what happens to her but to wish that this woman that condoned those words and activites actually gets over this and has success makes me wonder if you care at all about minorities in this country. You cannot even fathom how comments like this make me feel unless you are black. It's a slap in the face and like I said, it makes me wonder if you care.
DeleteAnd furthermore, if you would like to have an intelligent conversation I suggest you start by being on a different website. You certainly aren't showing your desire for intellectual debate being being on ducking Crazy Days and Nights so save it.
I would like for every white congressman to answer the question on whether they used the "n" word in their lifetime during a lie detector test. They would all fail...
ReplyDeleteThat is what is wrong with the way Paula was treated.. She was raised in the south and at age 66 there isn't one southerner who didn't say it. Lets be real!
Sooooo...that makes it right, excusable, and justifiable? This "lady" (other words I would personally interject) has a dog named Sambo..enough said
DeleteSooooo...that makes it right, excusable, and justifiable? This "lady" (other words I would personally interject) has a dog named Sambo..enough said
DeleteNo worries! There are multitudes of imbeciles from every state in the union. Texas is a big state, 1500 ppl sure as hell can't represent the mass majority. I live in SW Indiana, we're currently dealing w/ a situation where a local fire fighter & pastor was riding his bike. He ran a stop sign & was handcuffed & threatened w/ a taser. He is black. It was filmed by a neighbor & clearly shows the cop was being a total ass....but we have a handful of Idiots who think this crap is ok ....racist morons!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with drew, times change and people change and let's not forget that she used this word in the 70's just after being robbed by a black man. It was said in anger and we are now punishing her for being truthfull insteading of denying she ever said it (like many others would have done). I am sure each and everyone of us has said hateful words somewhere in our glorious lives, some that were common such as fag, queen, fairy and some that will be classified later in years as hate.
ReplyDeleteYep, we're all racist in Texas. Now excuse me, my horse is double parked.
ReplyDeleteHas every Southern person verbally attacked black employees or asked a woman to wear an Aunt Jemima costume?
ReplyDeleteThe issue was never about the n-word legally, it was about how she treated employees. She's a piece of shit.
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Houston and 1500 people can be found stuck in traffic on any road at any time. Drop in the bucket. Stop lumping the rest of us in with the idiots.
The problem is that she condoned her brother's recent behavior (not in the 70's). She condoned it by not doing anything about it. You cannot convince me that she was unaware of what he was doing. This was HER business and HER reputation. I am sure she was quite aware that such information about his behavior would NOT be well received. So, in my mind, she deserves what she got . I never really liked her anyhow. I know the lawsuit was thrown out, but it was thrown out on a stupid technicality. Read the filing papers (or whatever they are called), then hear the reason it was thrown out. She is not absolved.
ReplyDeleteOh my god, @drew. Stop giving her a pass. Have you seen that NYTimes video of her comparing her little token black man's skin color to the black backdrop behind her, and then dragging him out to show everyone how enlightened she is to have a black guy in her entourage? She also made other jaw droppingly racist remarks in that interview. This was only a few yrs ago. She is still clueless and racist.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to be upset with her, or even offended, but to say you hope she recovers and bounces back is a little much. Say what you want but anytime you say you hope a KNOWN racist succeeds in life, you're gonna get a sideye from a few people. As a black person, it sickens me that anyone would want her to do well and it makes me think you really do not care nor understand the struggle we have against ignorant ass people like Paula. Sure, let Paula have her glory and shine but remember what some of your fellow Americans went through and then wonder why youre supporting this woman?
ReplyDeleteI read her deposition in its entirety. The media has taken many of her statements out of context and have drawn quite a few hateful assumptions. Much of the public has unquestioningly gone right along with it. There was nothing in her deposition to suggest that she is walking around using racial slurs or treating anyone badly. The questions are posed in such a way that they are manipulative in their interpretation. Paula's counsel should have been on top of it more. I have been deposed before and found several parts of her deposition cringeworthy due to the false picture being puposefully created.
ReplyDeleteAfterwards, she should have addressed those specific areas and put them into the proper context. I don't know who was advising her, but they suck.
Thus enty is so NOT an attorney! :-p
First off, leave Houston alone. This is a conference that is hosted in different cities and attended by people all over the country.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, Paula Deen is reprehensible.
Car, no
DeleteMy mom, who is from Eastern KY, defended this witch. It took every bit of self restraint I had to keep from telling my mom to "shut up." As for Texas, this disgusting ovation just proves Big Brother's Aaryn right about her saying that that's how everyone in Texas talks. Living in Colorado, I've met lots and lots of Texans, and have yet to meet one who makes it a pleasure.
ReplyDelete@burnt if you're basing all Texans off d some girl from big brother i an going to guess that maybe you are the problem, not every single person from Texas that so happens to cross your path.
DeleteIt was Texas. Enough said.
ReplyDeleteBet the same would happen in Florida.
And Mississippi.
And Alabama.
And Tennessee.
And the Midwest.
She didn't disappear long enough for people to forget. Look at Dog the Bounty Hunter. He came back to TV and people had forgotten why he was dropped in the first place.
I wonder if Paula is a fan of Quentin Tarantino?
ReplyDeleteThe Daily Two Minutes of Hate.
ReplyDeletePathetic.
Oh my goodness gracious. This thread alone just shows why race relations are so strained in this country. So many of you are making your argument by insulting others: fat people, Texans, Republicans, southerners, old people, white people.
ReplyDeleteI long for the day when this topic can be discussed without name-calling and hate.
I wish people would ignore the media reports on the Paula Deen lawsuit and read the deposition and other court documents. This whole thing isn't about her using the N word decades ago after a bank robbery, it's about the way she and her brother conducted business at their restaurant and other business holdings within the last ten years.
ReplyDeleteShe and her brother were racist and sexist in the workplace, designating bathrooms for ethnic employees and telling them they could only use the back door to come and go, making it clear that no person of color could ever be promoted to host/hostess, and so on.
The lawsuit wasn't thrown out, a portion of it was and the rest was settled out of court. She deserved every misfortune that she has suffered, and more. Sadly, she doesn't seem to have learned from this whole ordeal, and getting a standing ovation like that sure isn't going to help.
This audience was self-selecting, and I'm sure they came from all over. It's not necessary to paint all Texans with this broad brush. You wouldn't want to be collectively judged by whatever group we can associate you with (OMG, all bike riders are assholes - for example), so please don't paint an entire state with a very diverse population based on the behavior of a very, very small percentage. Cheers.
ReplyDelete@ Burnt, I'm a native Texan who's been married to a Colorado native for nearly 25 years. FFS, what a stupid comment-that's not how everyone talks.
ReplyDeleteI bet Colorado would gladly accept help from Texas when fighting fires and floods, amirite? :)
Kels - It is in my opinion that forgiveness is a must in improving racial tensions in our country. If that offends you, well, that's your problem. I meant no offense.
ReplyDeleteYour attacks on me are completely off the wall. I interact with all people with an open heart and an open mind.
And, I don't know where you get off telling me to go to a different Web site to comment. Get a grip.
@susan- I'm with you. I'm sure even Obama has used that word.
ReplyDeleteFirst if people would do their research Paula Deen is a Democrat and in both elections was out stumping for Obama.
ReplyDeleteTwo if people took the time to find Lisa Jackson's actual deposition they would find her to defend Paula in several places and never once go after but her brother. She stated several times that she wasn't sure that Paula was getting the information she was asking to be relayed to her.
Has Paula Deen made mistakes YES but the media has jumped on it and totally vilified her beyond all reason worse than any Hollywood star that they seem to cowtow to.
The lawsuit wasn't thrown out, just a portion of it was.
ReplyDeleteThe population of Houston in 2011 was 2.045 million at 26.06 million people in the State of Texas. There were a mere 1500 people in that room who paid SPECIFICALLY to be there and see Paula Deen.
ReplyDeleteYou don't want an entire race to be judged based on prejudices but you're saying "What do you expect? It's Houston/Texas/The South." Thereby judging an entire state based on a miniscule percentage of its population?
It's like a pot and kettle factory in here.
I don't like Paula Deen. I was not shocked or surprised by what she said, and that's not why I don't like her. She just oozes insincerity from every pore, she's a shitty cook and she's annoying. THAT'S why people shouldn't defend her.
ReplyDelete@Lisa - The Daily Caller is a right wing blog and I have never known a right - leaning blog or source of information to be in the least bit credible.
ReplyDeleteEver.
ReplyDeleteShe named her dog 'Sambo'?
ReplyDeleteYeah. No excuse for that. Totally racist.
I don't believe I could put a statement into words any better than those commenters above saying to leave Houston &/or Texas alone! Since when do the actions of a small number of people represent the views of a city of 2M+?? And why try to say the actions of 1500 people represent that of 26M Texans? Stop spouting off ignorant statements that insult the millions that had nothing to do with this ridiculous act by a few. I'm actually really surprised that the normally intelligent commenters would even stoop to that level. I know many of you probably think I'm taking the insulting comments too personally. Truth is, I'm a very proud native Houstonian, & if people said ignorant things about the city you were born & raised in, it would probably get your knickers in a twist as well! ;)
ReplyDeleteMost of the anti-Houston/Texas comments would never have existed if the article left out the city in which this occurred (& edited out the part where she mentions Texas). Maybe then there would be more a intelligent conversation about Deen & her vile personality & views v. this bashing of my beloved home.
[jumping off soapbox now]
AMEN!!! Go 'Stros!!!!
DeleteWhy did we fight a war to keep Texas and Florida?
ReplyDelete
