It reminds me of changing EVERYthing in my life--a life that I had worked many many years to build--to move from a major city back to my rural hometown and marry my childhood friend/now husband and work with him in his small business. It was hard to admit that the life I had built wasn't working for me anyway, and it's taken three years to adjust to this slower small town life. And friends did not understand at all. But worth it.
Love that song and yor story. My roommate/ love of my life / former baby daddy's 3 year old always asks for Elpheba and Glinda and dances around to that. Reminds me of her and my love for roomie that is tucked away in a corner of my heart
Depends what style you like. There's old, Willie, Waylon, and the boys. There's crossover, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill. There is Texas Country and Red Dirt Country, Pat Green, Randy Rogers, Roger Creager. Listen online to KOKEFM, out of Austin Tx. They play awesome country, but no crossover. Good luck, I hope you find new music. I like most kinds.
thanks Patricia! Yeah I noticed I liked a few of the cross over country stars and figured I should probably give country music a chance. I'll definitely check out KOKEFM and the artists you mentioned.
Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle *jokes* songs never make me cry but two songs that give me that haunting, gut-wrench feeling are Holding Back the Years by Simply Red and Dont Dream its Over by Crowded House
Played during the funeral of a childhood friend when I was a teenager - she had CF and lived a lot longer than anyone expected. She died within days of her husband who also had CF.
"What's the Matter Here?" by 10,000 Maniacs. Not because of anything that happened to me, but the subject of the song is totally heartbreaking (an outsider's view of an abusive home and the victimized child). It's such a peppy song but ugh. Such a subject.
How Great Thou Art sung by Carrie Underwood and Vince Gill live at a country women in music thing. I could listen to this a million times and not get sick of it, and I ALWAYS tear up. Check it out:
Black by Pearl Jam ("I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, But why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine?")
Still Fighting It by Ben Folds ("You try & try and one day you'll fly away from me" and "You're so much like me ... I'm sorry" kills me every time)
I swear to God I'm choking up right now just thinking about these songs.
High by Jamar Rogers. It reminds me of where my life used to be, drowning my sorrows in all the wrong things but now how God has given me a second chance at living.
@Pink Picklegoo, I don't listen to much new country music because my car radio doesn't work so well after pulling my antennae out (it was broken and wouldn't go back in, so I had to yank it or leave it to fly around). Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Josh Turner, Jake Owen, and Little Big Town are probably good to start on for current country.
For older country, you can't go wrong with Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline.
If you're looking for something a little off mainstream, I love the now defunct band Cross Canadian Ragweed. The frontman from that band, Cody Canada, is now in a band called The Departed. My husband isn't really into country, but he likes them as much as I do. They're more like Southern Rock.
Thanks Karen, I don't know much about country music but I've recently started to listen to Lady Antebellum and Carrie Underwood and liked their music. I'll check out the rest!
Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer- it reminds me of my cousin, but it's not as gross as it sounds. My cousin Charlie died young, at 36. That song was playing at a BBQ he had with his gorgeous fiancé right after they bought a beautiful house with this great pool and patio. His fiancé was singing it and he was watching her with so much love. It's how I like to remember him.
Married With Children theme song. Every time I hear it I get a boner thinking of young Kelly Bundy and wacking off so I could get to sleep on Sunday nights in High School.
@VIP: It literally makes me sick to think that anyone takes Yoko seriously as anything besides a top flight gold digger. And her boy is a world class douchebag.
Barenaked Ladies - Pinch Me It's the most peppy song about heartbreaking depression, and was popular when I was hopelessly, desperately unhappy with no power to fix it at all. That song perfectly illustrated hopelessness but also the knowledge that some time in the future, you'll pull out of it.
Over You - Miranda Lambert. Blake Sheldon wrote it for his brother who died but couldn't sing it because it was way too emotional so Miranda did it for him. Came out just before my brother died and it just really hits home.
You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) by Dead or Alive.
I used to dance to this song at a popular club while I was in college, with this guy who was a pre-med major. He was extremely popular and well-loved.
He was later killed in a horrible accident while interning at a hospital. A mental patient attacked a nurse and he intervened, and died in the process.
The mental patient was released not too much later (he was fine when he took his meds, the powers that be said). He promptly went to a grocery store and killed some poor woman.
The song rarely comes on anymore, but when it does, I immediately change it. Can't stand to hear it.
Angel by Sarah Mclaughlin, sad song that was played quite often at the hospital while visiting someone close to me. Believe by Cher also was on often (this was late 90's), but I just thought it was some dude singing a shitty song.
Yoko Ono is nuts. I can't believe that shit is considered art.
The Dwarves "Motherfucker". Brings a tear to my eye cos it's the song that was playing the first time my beloved wrong holed me. Without lube, or spit.
Great call on "Black" chopchop! That songs gets me still. Now this I can't even believe I'm going to admit to it, but Phil Collins. Against all Odds! Makes me weepy :(
I made a playlist of all the songs mentioned here, that I could find, on spotify. Lol CDAN Listener playlist. I'll be weepy the rest of the day now. Thanks!
"Wonder" by Natalie Merchant. My daughter was born to that song.
I believe Fate, fate smiled and and destiny And as she came to my cradle "Know this child will be able" And laughed as my body she lifted "Know this child will be gifted"
And laughed as she came to my mother "Know this child will not suffer With love, with patience and with faith She'll make her way, make her way Make her way, make her way"
After being diagnosed with cancer, and recovering, sometimes the mind wanders into very dark places.. this was the love letter song to my Husband and babies, to be played at my funeral.
"Silly Love Song" it came on someone's boom box during Senior Trip, and at first the guy was kinda shy that he had it, but the whole bus was singing it at the top of our lungs! Such a sweet time with cherished friends!
"How to save a life" OMG! kills me every time! about 9 years ago listing to Kidd in the Morning out of Dallas, he used this song as background music, while having a profile piece on a sick child for his Kids' Kids.. by the time I pulled into my driveway, total ugly cry! Body shaking ugly cry. Thankfully the child ended up being okay, but to this day, I can barely handle that song. (My middle son at the time, had a very scary illness/surgery and it really hit me hard, and close)
"Celebration" by Kool and the Gang, had that song playing when Hubby and I walked into our wedding reception!
"Do I ever cross your mind" By Brian McKnight. uuuugh! Don't we all have one of those songs that makes us think.. what if? :(
I have lots and lots more.. but these are some of the big ones.
Erik Satie's Gymnopedies -- can't listen to it without weeping. As for nostalgia, Pink Floyd Pillow of Winds and all I see are bubbled tapestries on ceilings.
"Love Bites" by Def Leppard as it reminds me of someone I loved back in 1988 even though he never loved me back but every time I hear that song it reminds me of him and takes me back.
Reminds me of a really dark time in my life when i just wanted to go in isolation, when i was around people i wanted to be alone and when i was alone i wanted to be rond people, my fiance and i bought a house but before we married he fell in love with someone else and asked me to leave. This song summed it up perfectly
Hurt - Christina aguilera Hurt - Johnny Cash in my place - Coldplay Nothing - the script Fade into the background - ne yo What hurts the most - rascall flats Somewhere with you - Kenny Chesney
Really listen to green green grass of home, it will tear your heart out. Brand new day van morrison. And of course "Ill be home for Christmas ". Killer!
Fleetwood Mac (or Smashing Pumpkins - it's the lyrics that kill me) - Landslide
Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle
The Cure - Fear of Ghosts (that one line has haunted me for so long: An the further I get from the things I care about, the less I care about who much further away I get)
Ave Maria and You'll Never Walk Alone (Jerry Lewis sang it at the end of the telethon). They both remind me of my grandma. We always stayed up all night to watch the telethon together. I can't stand to hear the song since she died in 1989.
Ave Maria was played at her funeral. It was her favorite song. I can still picture her standing in her kitchen, cooking, and singing the song.
It's not to hard to jerk tears out of my eyes. The worst lately is Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck." I really don't listen to much country, but after hearing this story on Fresh Air, I find myself wanting to hear it when I run across it on the radio. It makes me teary every time.
The Scientist - Coldplay Apart - The Cure There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush Erase and Rewind - The Cardigans Unbroken - The Butchies The Sounds of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel Liar - The Cranberries A Forest - The Cure Early Winter - Gwen Stefani Signs - Bloc Party Tulips - Bloc Party Kyoto Song - The Cure Six Different Ways - The Cure Handsome Devil - The Smiths Drowning Man - U2 Hell Yeah - Ani DiFranco
These songs all have special meaning in my life. Some are sad, but they all bring back powerful memories for me.
True Colors- Cyndi Lauper (My husband dedicated it to me at out wedding and I wept like a baby while we danced. I had gone through a lot that year. Now I cry happy tears when I hear it :)
There are some really good songs listed here, Black, Harvest Moon, What a Wonderful World, the National Anthem, the list literally goes on and on. I have two many songs to list, but a couple other songs that gets me which is totally cheesy is You'll Be There and Love Without End Amen, by George Strait. (Can you tell I love George Strait!?!)
A Theme From A Summer Place and Do You Want to Know a Secret by the Beatles are two of my favorite pick me up songs though (they both were part of my wedding). It can't always be sad tune time.
Wishing you were here - Chicago
