TMZ Is Not A Fan Of Amber Alerts

TMZ has a post up right now which is complaining about an Amber Alert which was sent out last night at 10:54pm. I got it and I think everyone who has a smart phone in California got it.TMZ seems annoyed that it happened late at night. I'm sure the kids who were kidnapped would have preferred to not get kidnapped at all, but next time will try and get kidnapped during business hours. They were also upset that the alert buzzes your phone multiple times. You know, to get your attention because kids have been f**king kidnapped. TMZ then also posted a poll wondering if other people were also annoyed about the alert and told people how to turn it off. Seriously? Let me know when one of your loved ones goes missing and then you can tell everyone how to turn it back on and how you encourage people to ignore it and disable it. F**kers.

  4. I was wondering how I got the alert because I never signed up for them, but it's good that the news is spread to as many people as possible. My only issue was the info was pretty limited.

Plus, whenever I hear about an Amber Alert I giggle a little because of the George Lopez joke about his grandmother with demention. Hehe

  6. I hate to be pro-TMZ (especially without reading their article,) but the tone of this post kind of pushes me to it. I understand the importance of Amber Alerts, they’ve helped save lives and the information does need to get out. HOWEVER, at 10:52PM when my phone started buzzing LOUDLY and REPEATEDLY, I was not on the freeway. I was in bed, sleeping. Had I been out, on a freeway, where the information might have been of some good, it would have been AGAINST THE LAW for me to pull me phone out and read the message. That’s why CALTRANS has CHANGEABLE MESSAGE SIGNS on the freeway, instead of in my bedroom.

    1. If you turn the sound off on your phone does the alert still make a sound?

      Delete
    2. @Illium. I'm not sure. I had the ringer turned up, but the rest of the sounds turned down (so I wouldn't get caught play "Plants vs. Zombies" during the kids' swimming lessons earlier in the evening.)

  8. Those who received the messages at 10 pm were luckier than the ones who received the message around 2 am. Everyone in my house was woken up by their phones last night.

Also, since the alert went to all smart phones, that means the message was sent to every person who has a smart phone, including children. It wasn't much fun to have to explain Amber Alerts to my kids.

    1. Your kids are old enough to have smart phones but not know what an amber alert is? You could also make them keep their phones some place besides their room at night.

The amber alert isn't just for that moment. What if they are missing for days and someone saw that in the middle of the night recognized them two days later? You all kind of sound like whiney, over privileged Republicans.

      Delete
    2. Yes, Elisha, only Republicans have short-tempers, sleep problems, or early wake-up calls. Stereotype much?

  9. This happened in Michigan a couple months ago, but it was around 3 am. I'm all for Amber Alerts, but I was PISSED that they sent it out without me consenting. They should have an opt-in policy, or let people set the hours that they are okay with being woken up by a LOUD BLARING sound (it wasn't just the usual text message sound).

  10. Just hope the kids are safe and found soon.

  11. Umm, first of all if you don't want to be woken up by your phone you can turn it off or leave it in the kitchen.

Second of all this blog has taken a direction I don't see it recovering from, so while it has been nice I am out of here. I've enjoyed you all but the petty nature of the posts and lack of any decent gossip I can't read elsewhere indicates it is time to move on. Take care everyone.

  12. @mamabot, I think that even young kids should know about Amber Alerts and stranger danger. If a kid is old enough to have his/her own cell phone, then he/she is old enough to know what a kidnapping is.

    ReplyDelete
  13. We don't have that here in NC. Alerts on our phones that is. Is it done in a lot of states?

  15. If you have an iphone there is a setting to turn amber alert notification off. I noticed it recently when looking at settings. It was on by default, though.

  16. P.S. it's under settings > notifications > government alerts (you have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the notifications page to see it)

    1. Thanks I looked this morning oh how to turn it off that alert scared the crap put of me and I don't live far from Boulevard.

I have the Ford sync and the first alert I ever received was through the car (coincidentally near Boulevard) and it was a bad weather alert. I didn't know if it was my car or phone or UFO.

    2. @Prada, is it a state thing? I have an iPhone and don't see government alerts under my notifications.

    Let me get this straight--

TMZ complains about late night Amber Alerts. TMZ and CDaN are competing gossip sites. Anytime they have a chance to rag on each other, they do so.

Enty points out TMZ's whining, which probably makes them guilty of the same thing on some level. But you're pissing on Enty over this?

So now some of you are going to defend scummy TMZ?

    Uhh, okay. *shrugs*

Shouldn't we hope that the children are found safe? At least Enty posted their pictures.

Not sure why you'd let TMZ off scot-free. Do you want to see more pics of Sydney Leathers peeling off her panties? No thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Parents are annoyed that they have to explain late-night Amber Alerts to their children...because they deemed it appropriate to give their children smart phones? You get what comes with it. Sad that people are so "put out" by a missing persons case. Yuck.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Lanya, TMZ and Enty have polar opposite viewpoints on the issue and since each person can only agree with one, acknowledging which side in the debate you fall on has nothing to to with defending that website.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Has TMZ ever ragged on CDAN? I know Dlisted hasn't, MichaelK even uses CDAN blinds sometimes. (People in the comments, different story.)

Today's Enty needs some hemorrhoid cream. It's a point for discussion, but like Hollywood Dime said, the post could have been about the missing kid or a better way to make the system work instead of complaining about scumbags like TMZ.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with enty. If it was your child, you'd want everyone
to keep an eye out. And quit bitching about being woken up, because a lot of kidnappers will break into people's homes, so you should be on alert. What if it was your house and you were held at gunpoint?

    1. @lostathome. If this was my house and I was being held at gunpoint, I probably wouldn't be checking my messages.

  25. Add me to the camp that wonders why your young children have smart phones, but you're worried about them learning what an Amber Alert is. Unless you are with those kids 24/7 they are probably using those phones to learn all kinds of things you know nothing about. You can get simple text/call phones for children at Best Buy in the Pay as you Go aisle. The cheapest one is about $15 and the plan is $10 a month (or you can add it to your plan after paying for one month seperately).

Anyway, that alert is part of a new nationwide alert system that is a partnership between the wireless companies and the Federal Government. It is used for severe weather/emergency alerts, national security alerts, and Amber alerts. The alerts have a distinctive ringtone and will vibrate twice. If your phone is on silent, they will vibrate twice. They are supposed to wake you up, especially if you live in tornado country and your life is in danger.

Last night's alert was sent statewide because the suspect (who had killed the mother and one child, then burned down the house they lived in before taking the older 2 children) was reported to be seen in Northern California after driving from San Diego all day.

If you want to learn more, google wireless emergency alerts or read this

  28. I was "alerted" twice for children missing in the Denver, CO area. I was on vacation in PA at the time. Also, I was alerted once at 3:30 a.m. Scared the hell out of me, and didn't seem to make much sense, as 95% of people are sleeping at that hour.

    1. I'm thinking if someone in that other 5% saw the missing child and was able to provide information that saved his/her life, it might make more sense. It only takes 1 person.

  30. Amber Alerts are important, no one is debating that. The issue is common sense implementation.

When faced with a chit load of annoyed people choosing to turn their Amber Alerts off altogether because they are being disturbed late at night, or simply refraining from disturbing people late at night, the smart answer is obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I totally agree with Enty on this!

  32. I'm with Enty on this one. I've had a baby stolen, and I can only imagine what some family is going through right now knowing that that woman is dead and her children are missing and in danger. So thousands of people were woke up; that family will not sleep for a long, long time.
It may not have been the most convenient time for a lot of people, but of all of the aggravating annoyances of our society today, this is the most ridiculous to gripe about.

  33. I turn my ringer down at night. It's not rocket science. A lot of smart phones also have settings to send calls or alerts to voicemail until the alarm goes off. Again, not rocket science.

Out of curiosity, I voted on the TMZ poll and 81% of those who responded said they were NOT pissed at the alert. So, basically, four out of five people aren't assholes.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @robin-m, it scared the crap out of me too (and the cats). I'd rather it be like the emergency alerts. Gets my attention; doesn't scare me. If they made the sound alert not as loud or put an option to turn the sound off then people would keep them. The flashing light on the phone alone would help a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't understand why the government or even the service providers haven't made these alerts public knowledge. I was woken up at 2:52am with an alert about a flash flood warning 60 miles away. Scared the Jeebus out of me.

  36. I agree with you Enty...read the complaint editorials today and thought it was a joke...how insane are you to not understand or appreciate the importance of an amber alert?

  37. "how insane are you to not understand or appreciate the importance of an amber alert?"

The Enty's, NomNom83s, and megan00ms etc. are getting their superiority fix today for sure. If any of you really cared, you'd have something more persuasive to express than calling those with differing opinions f**kers, assholes, or insane.

  38. How sad that a momentary distraction from TV, sleep, or whatever is too much hassle for some of you to potentially save a life or two. Really? A women and child were murdered and burned with at least one other child kidnapped and you can't be bothered with some buzzing and a glance at your phone! Really? To save a life?

@phoenix: It's not about taking sides so much but more surprise that folks would argue over Amber alerts. It just feels that some are siding with TMZ on this. I don't understand.

    But to each their own.

  40. @L, so tell me.. what did that nasty abusive outburst accomplish? Was it intended to convince me that those who perceive themselves as morally superior SHOULD call people vile names or in your case hurl obscene insults? You need to get real because your logic leaves much to be desired, or if you truly agree with the behavior of those I called out, who cares what you think. All the best to you.

  41. I cannot imagine going through what that family is going through. Yes, it's inconvenient, but it's necessary. Their mother was murdered and they were kidnapped. Sorry, endangered children trumps inconvenience. ANY TIME. I am sad that we live in a time where people are upset they're being awakened by an alert for missing and endangered children. I shudder to hope it never happens to any of you.

  42. Bottom line - turn off the phone if you don't want to be woken up. It could just as easily have been a wrong number that woke you. Amber Alerts are there and important and actually work so when it's a choice, I choose Amber Alerts every time. Roll your ass over and go back to sleep. 47. Someone asleep in their bed is not going to see the missing child. If these alerts are really going out to millions of California residents at a time, the vast majority of whom are hundreds of miles away from the child, then some attention to sending the right message to the right people at the right time is warranted, even if for no other reason than to keep people from getting into a habit of ignoring these alerts entirely or going out of their way to disable them.

That said I already turn off my phone while I'm asleep so its all kind of moot anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @megan00m you seem to love calling people names. Try growing up. You might like it.

  49. The family is from my town, the little boy plays football with my son, the mother was a client of my coworker. It's so mind boggling tragic.

I recieved the first alert around 6, the second one before 9, I'm not sure what this middle of the night talk is about. If it was one of my kids, I don't really give two fucks what time it is. I'd want each and every one of you to know.

  50. 6 hours. 6 hours is the window of time that an abducted child has before being murdered in the majority of stranger abduction cases. This has stayed with me for years after hearing an interview where a law enforcement officer was stating this period of time when discussing a case of a missing 6 year old whose mother waited the whole day to report her missing.

I mute my phone at night.

  52. Yes. Because the state knew who was asleep and who was awake and who was home and who was driving. They should have much more selective and only sent it to those that could help.

tempest...you are more concerned about your sleep than a couple of murders and kidnapped kids? If the people you named think they are morally superior to you, they should. They are. Maybe you should Google the definition of "morals".

If I got an Amber Alert, I'd rather it be a text. No weird ass noise to go with it. It's not like I'm getting up at 3a.m. to go outside. I live in BFE, it's fricking dark, and there could be bears or panthers, or pissed off coons, hell no.

  55. @Lola, no. I like the suggestion made by someone earlier that the alerts should be like the emergency alerts. A sound that gets your attention but doesn't scare you, not as loud combined with the flashing light on your phone and having the option to turn it off.

And since the tone and tenor of many who feel they are in the right in this post is so unnecessarily judgmental and nasty, I'm going to quote another commenter from earlier (Karrots) who succinctly addressed the problem:

"This blog has taken a direction I don't see it recovering from, so while it has been nice I am out of here. I've enjoyed you all but the petty nature of the posts and lack of any decent gossip I can't read elsewhere indicates it is time to move on. Take care everyone."

  59. What I find odd is that the messages are pushed to your phone without your knowledge. My phone asks me for passwords and permissions for everything. Your government installs a system that sends a message to your phone whether you want it or not? Abduction alerts are good but shouldn't they let you know before they put something like that on your personal phone so you're prepared in case a text like that comes in?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Thank you Enty. You have a big heart and you are absolutely right to be angry. Every moment counts in these cases.

  63. Puhleeze. One reason I visit CDAN is that Enty somehow satisfies a desire for salacious gossip while caring about life-or-death stuff that is also happening in the world. C'mon; by now you must know that abuse of women or children always pushes his buttons--big-time.

I like him for that just as I like Michael K's love of puppy & kitten vids (rarely watch em, but they're his cure for "the Sads" & will embarrassedly admit to peeping at his link to the Shiba Inu pups).

Almost never visit TrashMZ, cause despite a need for occasional adolescent superficiality, gotta draw a line in the sand somewhere, & TMZ's that line for me ;-).

Cmon; over 80 comments on this. That's one reason I browse this site.

Agree or not, it seems way-cool when a goss-blogger & readers use comments not as an SNS but as a forum to discuss issues & are passionate about their opinions.

AND hey--if I had a kid & s/he went missing? I'd not hesitate to wake the entire USA at 3-effin AM (granted, this is one of the 99 reasons I never had children...)
