Your Turn
A Harvard doctor says the government's recommendation of three servings of milk/dairy per day is way too much sugar and calories for most people. So much for that Got Milk campaign. Do you drink milk? It seems that milk was way more popular back in the day than it is now.
I use it for baking, but for everything else I use almond milk. There's something unnatural to me about drinking milk - we're the only species to drink milk as adults on the only species who drinks the milk of another animal.
ReplyDeleteI also think it's gross and unnatural. It makes no sense to me that people still drink milk after youth...this isn't Mongolia or some shit, there is no reason you should be drinking the milk of other animals! There are other beverages, other sources of calcium.
DeleteFruit has sugar too, natural sugars. So, how does that compare to milk?
ReplyDeleteMilk is way over-rated, over-processed and over-cooked. Pasteurized cow's milk serves no nutritional purpose that can't be found elsewhere in more easily digested sources.
ReplyDeleteamen
DeleteI use it to bake and whenever I have a horrible hangover. Maybe it is all in my head but I found it to heal any hangovers I have had.
ReplyDeleteI do not drink milk. Don't like it.
ReplyDeleteI don't drink cows milk. I will use it in recipes though. I have always thought it should not be thought of as so very healthy. It's not.
ReplyDeletedairy is full of hormones. it's from a pregnant cow, after all. dairy also causes acne in a lot of people bc of all the hormones. it's actually kinda gross when you think about it.
ReplyDeleteMUSCLE MILK.
ReplyDeletePlastic
ReplyDeleteHate milk. There is no need to drink it once you have teeth. No other animal on the planet continues nursing beyond infancy. Biggest racket on the planet, all this push for dairy in the diet. Calcium is not absorbed efficiently by ingesting it. Weight bearing exercise is the best way to ensure healthy bones; there's something about the interaction between muscle and bone that processes calcium the best.
ReplyDeleteYes, soy milk (regular) and choco soy milk.
ReplyDeleteLactose intolerant! Milk makes me violently ill.
ReplyDeleteCheese. All day.
ReplyDeleteSince I got GI problems, I've had to avoid milk.
The Harvard food pyramid also has alcohol on it so I go with whatever they say
ReplyDeleteI am more concerned with the hormones in milk than calories. Also lactose intolerant, but I weather it.
ReplyDeleteGetting calcium is so much more than consuming dairy. Greens and exercise are needed too.
If you are interested in the doctor, these quotes are nothing new. i am not sure why the media is picking up on it now. he has been coming up with even more interesting dietary relationships, from his work with obese children: http://childrenshospital.org/cfapps/research/data_admin/Site114/mainpageS114P0.html
Recently starting monitoring my carbs to lose a little weight and head off diabetes. 1/4 cup of milk has 4 carbs. That's a lot of sugar. I only use it for my tea and am even moving away from that when possible. Reading these comments is thought provoking. Why do we drink milk anyway?
ReplyDeleteI drink milk nearly everyday.
ReplyDeleteWe use skim organic milk but I hate milk unless it's in cereal or cooking with it.. Chocolate milk made with the old Nestle Quik powder was the best!
ReplyDeleteI think the hormones in milk are whats contributing to kids maturing faster than they should.
Only time I'll drink it is if I eat a super hot wing at Bdubs, to cool my mouth
Only with a spoonful or 2 of powdered Nesquik. That shit is delish. Gotta be the powder tho, the syrup just isn't the same.
ReplyDeleteNo milk but I have to have my cheese!
ReplyDeleteI thought you lost your cheese!
DeleteI ate her cheese, and it made me sick
DeleteNo milk for me but I love cheese and yogurt. Once in a blue moon, I get a craving for chocolate milk and there's a company that makes chocolate-flavored coconut milk that hits the spot.
ReplyDeleteYuck! No.
ReplyDeleteJust almond milk, although cheese is delicious.
ReplyDeletePIT. It does a body good.
ReplyDelete@patty: fructose vs lactose. two different kinds of sugar.
ReplyDeletei love milk, i hate plant-milks. but i am vegan for the month so.... :(
I only drink the milk of middle aged, man hating, female gossip writers whose grasp on reality is as weak as their attempts at being in the character of a bacon infused entertainment lawyer. It is quite unique with its hint of Virginia Slim Menthols and has the medicinal properties of Midol and Seroquel.
ReplyDeleteEither a splash in my coffee or a glass to dunk some oatmeal cookies in, it dontget no better.
No milk, I have Crohn's instead. Milk sucks. Plus, my mom used to mix green food coloring in it for St. Patty's Day and it always tasted warm to me. YUCK.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about drinking it, like back in the day when they had "mid-morning milk" at school, but Haagen-Dazs and I have a nice relationship.
ReplyDeleteNo more. I use coconut milk or hemp milk for the most part. I'm 90% dairy free...sometimes I can't resist ice cream.
ReplyDeleteMilk in cereal, or chocolate milk.
ReplyDeleteI never drank milk. Yuck.
I love it but I've cut back so mostly it goes on my cereal. Perhaps I should use wine instead?
ReplyDeletePlastic
ReplyDeleteNo. Never. Drank it when I was growing up, but now it skeeves me out. Any dairy, except for Kefir is so bad for you. Horrible. Soy is bad for you too.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@Sweet Brown Fan, I'm pretty sure that everything goes with wine.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet this same doctor concludes this, in a study about dairy and metabolic syndrome: "Dietary patterns characterized by increased dairy consumption have a strong inverse association with IRS among overweight adults and may reduce risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease."
ReplyDeleteSo...?
I drink milk, yes, especially with cereal. I'm more worried about the sugar I get from, um, candy, haha.
I like soy milk but am more concerned about the negative effects of soy.
I agree. Dairy products are full of saturated fat and often full of hormones. Too bad ice cream is my favorite food. I use almond or coconut milk in my cereal and smoothies. I use a little milk in my coffee.
ReplyDeleteYES! Absolutely. RAW MILK ONLY! The first thing that hits my belly in the morning is a glass of raw milk, then I give about a shot full to my dogs. If I'm hungry and don't feel like eating, I drink a glass of raw milk. The week of my period, I double down so I don't get cramps. Raw milk is fucking amazing.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, it makes me incredibly sad to see how many ill-informed people there are on this blog. Shameful.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we aren't ill informed, we just don't like milk at all? Who cares about being informed about something you don't consume?
DeleteMilk in cereal and 1/2 & 1/2 in coffee...
ReplyDeleteMilk is disgusting, however I LOVE cheese.
ReplyDeleteCheese makes me gag. I can't stand the taste, can't stand the smell. It is the worst. Not liking cheese makes life HARD. People judge if you don't like cheese.
ReplyDeleteWow, I thought I was the only one! The fact that I don't like cheese (save for mozzerella) is the source of disbelief among most everyone I encounter.
DeleteCow's milk is for baby cows.
ReplyDeleteExcept for ice cream.
@anon a miss: You're evil!!!
ReplyDelete@Kels: Can I have your share, please? (Don't give it to anon a miss, she's evil, that one.)
ReplyDeleteDairy and I don't get along very well. I will put a tiny amount of it in my 1 cup of coffee.
ReplyDeleteOccasionally I get a craving for cheese and if I eat it, I pay later.
I'm allergic to soy, so no soy milk--I have had almond milk but I'm not a fan.
Tsk tsk Enty... you have irresponsibly misreported the findings and recommendations of this study.
ReplyDeleteIn it, the doctor cautions that milk is important for people, especially children, who eat a lower-quality diet. That applies to MOST people in America.
What should be avoided are low fat, often flavored milk products which have added sugars to improve the taste.
Love a cold glass of milk with dinner, and also on my nightly bowl of Frosted Flakes. You milk haters should be tortured and then euthanized.
ReplyDeleteOnly use almond/coconut milk w/ cereal.
ReplyDeleteWe're a dairy free home due to allergies- but we certainly love our coconut milk!
ReplyDeleteCoconut or almond milk is best.
ReplyDeleteHumans are the only animals that consume milk after infancy has ended. You can get you calcium from veggies instead. Also the hormones/antibiotics in most milk products are extremely bad in the long term.
Milk is not good for you. Skim milk is even worse. If oyu insist on using milk.... use whole milk, half & half or heavy cream.
I never drink milk. Never. I can't stand the taste of it. The thought of buying it is alien to me; it has been so long since I have.
ReplyDeleteHowever, when I drink coffee, I have to have something white in it, so I used to buy evaporated milk, but since my mom has come to live with me, I use her powdered creamer. I guess I am contradicting myself.
But fresh milk, no.
Love almond milk.
Oh Please nothing is good for you anymore. Just eat, drink and be happy.
ReplyDeleteI read an article not long ago that said milk has as much added sugar to it as a can of soda. If everyone knew that would you still want to drink it? I wish it was allowed more for raw milk. It is much more healthier for you and all the hype surrounding it about being dangerous is all bullshit propaganda coming out of the major dairy farms-there is not any provable cases of people getting sick from raw milk yet it is illegal.
ReplyDelete@temp grape and @star i've always wanted to try raw/fresh milk. where do you guys buy your supply?
ReplyDeletecheese is delicious. i am only picky on the pungent ones, but even then, my palette is adjusting and learning to enjoy all tastes :)
@ Temp Grape...You're right. Raw milk is ok for you...but only because it's not processed or pasteurized, and it is loaded with probiotics. The cream at the top of milk is absolutely delicious too.
ReplyDeletePeople should be able to drink whatever they want...even if there are dangerous consequences (giving it to kids unable to make an informed decision is a different matter).
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, there are many, many documented instances of people becoming extremely I'll (and in some cases, dying) from conning raw milk:
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5608a3.htm?mobile=nocontent&s_cid=mm5608a3_e
And lest people look sideways because it's the CDC, here's and article from Mother Jones (hardly a bastion of conservative thought):
Mother Jones article :
ReplyDeletehttp://m.motherjones.com/environment/2012/09/is-raw-milk-safe-e-coli
Consuming, not conning
ReplyDelete@Lola...yes. It's true. But not if you grow up with it and your body has a resistance to it. My ex grew up on a farm and that's all he drank growing up. Never drank processed milk like the rest of the world. He has a very strong immune system and is never sick. Temp Grape is actually correct.
ReplyDeleteGuess I'm like that only poster that loves milk. I come from a family of super lactose tolerant northern europeans so maybe that is why. Probably drink 4 glasses of milk a day + cheese + yogurt + whatever. FUCK YEAH DAIRY!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCow and any other species milk is poison to the human body. We should all avoid dairy.
ReplyDeletethe goverment also recomends flouride ...Wait we have no choice since its a additive in most city water ....flouride is a poison look it up
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI love it and drink it with breakfast every day.
ReplyDeleteSome of you are misinformed. The only cow's milk that is safe to consume is raw milk from organic pastured cows. This milk is a whole, living, probiotic, healing food. As is the cheese, yogurt, butter, kefir, etc that is made from raw pastured milk.
ReplyDeleteAlmond milk and Coconut milk all the way (both unsweetened the sweetened stuff is just as bad as soda).
ReplyDeleteOur pediatrician who's from China, stopped my children from any milk by age 2. He agreed there are better was to get calcium and swears Americans have lots of health issues because of our addiction to dairy.
ReplyDeleteNo, coconut, almond, or hemp mylk only.
ReplyDeleteGood! More for making cheese.....delicious cheese....
ReplyDeleteLove Forks Over Knives!
ReplyDeleteNo, and neither do any of my kids. One is alergic, the others don't like it. I loved it as a kid. But the "human milk for human babies" campaign, and the reminders it shared of us being the only species to drink another species bodily fluid killed that. So I guess I've been milk free for 15 years. I eat ceral dry. Fake milk grosses me out too. A substitute for something yucky? No thanks.
ReplyDeleteDon't drink milk (horribly unhealthy) but I love cheese although I don't eat it much anymore. Soymilk goes in coffee these days.
ReplyDeleteNope don't drink milk. Soy sometimes. Even too much soy is bad for one's health though...
ReplyDeletenuts, berries, grass fed beef, farm fresh eggs, free range chicken, fish caught from the seas, veggies from the ground, salad, citrus , those are my diet goals daily. Not always a success but I'm ok with most of the time...
I don't understand all the "we're the only species to drink another animal's milk" comments like thats a bad thing? We are also the only species to farm and drive cars and you aren't complaining about those things
ReplyDelete
