WAY against and SICK TO DEATH of the sexualization and hip-ification of CRIMINALS and MURDERERS. He killed an 8 year old boy in COLD BLOOD and should be portrayed as nothing but the horrible murderer that he is, not some rockstar. I have never been so angry about a media story in my life.

There was a bit from some late-night show on the local morning news, featuring the RS covers with Charles Manson, O.J. Simpson, and Roman Polanski at the height of their respective legal notoriety. I don't see why this is any different; it's current news. And I'm sure RS is loving all the extra publicity and the fact that people who haven't bought the magazine in years will be rushing out to get it. Also the people who think the issue will be worth big bucks in the future.

It's even more disgusting that RS's defense is that they want to educate and inform people. Agree 100%. People need to look at the context of the article. Surely if extremism is to be defeated we need to understand what drives so called "regular" people to become radicalised.
I am from Boston and currently live in one of the towns that went on 24 hour lock down and was scared out of my mind when everything went down. A ton of the people I grew up with were close close friends of Krystal one of the victims. With that wing said I was hugely disappointed in this cover and thought it was tacky cheap marketing ploy.

Against. I'd be find with a different picture that didn't glamorize his appearance. The cover of Rolling Stones is generally reserved for Rock Stars. I feel like this cover and the name "THE BOMBER" kind of gives him a Rock Star status to those that support him and what he did. I'm apposed to the idea it conveys. I understand the article is in no way supportive of him, but I believe this cover just became an Iconic Image for Terrorist. I bet they have it framed already on their walls as a source of inspiration and THAT'S what is upsetting. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev wasn't and isn't a snarling, multifanged monster. He was a handsome, likable, popular, friendly kid.
This, the sweet-looking high-school hottie taking the selfie now on the cover of the Rolling Stone, is what somehow became the monster who has no shred of conscience over the people he's killed and the people he's maimed.
That's the story, and it's important. He wasn't born a monster. He didn't look like one, talk like one, act like one, feel like one, even after his crime.
That's a story we need to examine, and the comparison of that handsome, likable face and the monstrosity that has come to live under it -- identified as a monster right there on the cover under that sweet-looking face -- is at the core of it.
Not to start with that face is to completely blow the story.
Their desperate attempt at being relevant and getting more attention than usual will backfire in loss of advertisers. The more heinous part is that by glamorizing this a**hole they could make other weak minded individuals want to commit outrageous acts to get this sort of attention too. I believe in non-censorship of the press but putting him in that idol position "on the cover the Rolling Stone" was not a well thought out decision, IMHO.

I saw the actual magazine in a store yesterday and I was highly offended how they softened the picture to create a come hither sexuality to it.
It really bothered me, that I don't care what the story is or how he got to where he is now.

The picture Rolling Stone selected speaks to the very point of the article. I am uncomfortable with the fact that he looks handsome and sweet because it is hard to reconcile that with the monster who set off bombs in a crowd. And that is the whole point of the article.

Having said the above, evidently the article does not really offer any true insights as to how the kid became a terrorist. If so, then I lean towards being against it because it's clearly an attempt by Rolling Stone to grab headlines.

The stores have their rights too. They don't have to sell something they disagree with. Censorship means no one should be able to access it. These retailers are just saying THEY will not carry it.

This picture has appeared before in the press without comment. There are not a lot of Tsarnev(sp) around and this is one of the only one that works for a RS cover.

The cover is deliberately both provocative and Terrorist Teen Beat. It's for revolutionary chic nitwits who wear Che t-shirts to strike a blow against The Man while living rent-free in The Man's (daddy's) basement. And it's for boy-crushers of all ages. The typical RS demographic in other words. If the point of the article is "how did it come to this" then why use this photo, which is quite recent, as opposed to baby photos or something? This being RS, the article is probably a big festival of shame and blame of everyone except this little shithead. I saw a photo of bin Laden back in the 70s with friends/family. Everyone looked really happy and smiling, no headscarfs or hijabs or long beards or evil eyes. It's actually really interesting what happened there.
I think the reaction speaks to the Amanda Bynes-ification of our society. "Ugly" =bad, "pretty"=good. He was a good looking kid, that doesn't mean he was a good person. This was his face, and I'm pretty sure this pic is from his facebook or some other social media- it has been used in media before. There was already a groupie following of this guy because of his looks, and they insist he has to be innocent because he is cute. That story would be just as good as how one guy turned into a monster.
By the way, the cover story doesn't offend me. It doesn't make me uncomfortable to reconcile that a good looking person is capable of horibble acts (ex: Ted Bundy).
I started off thinking I would vote "against", but I did read almost everyone's comments, at least those relevant to the question, and was very impressed with Johnathan's argument for his "for" vote. It made me think hard enough to where I'm no longer against using this image and can see the point of choosing this particular photograph for the context of the story.
I remember one of my own reactions to seeing his face back when the stories started breaking about his identity and photos of him started being published. I thought he looked so innocent and adorable and I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this cute teenager ended up a terrorist.
That said, I absolutely do not think the people voting against this image are indicating they are censorship advocates. You can support freedom of press and still disagree with the choices of the media.

Rolling Stone doesn't just cover music. It's most famous cover story of late is the one that basically destroyed Stanley McChrystal's career.It won a Peabody. In fact, it's arguably the magazine article with the most real world impact in the last 10 years. Why should Rolling Stone be obliged to stick to music?

For. This is what he looked/looks like. However it's more than just his face, it is what it now represents. He is one of the faces of America. As an immigrant, he is everything that America stands for and everything the country was built on. His family moved here (assumigly) to love the American dream. They lived in a culturally diverse and tolerant neighborhood, made friends, had jobs, and this boy was on all accounts REALLY well adjusted. When something happened within his family nobody really took notice. As with most immigrant families (old school families universally as well) they kept the details of their hardships to themselves and just carried on with the struggle. When the older brother couldn't/wouldn't swim against the tide and when that tide seemed to be sucking him out to sea his lifeboat became his religion. How many kids feel the same and use drugs or alcohol? How many kids (especially immigrants in the same situation!) join gangs? The numbers would probably be pretty distressing. Fact is, the Boston bombing was some jihad act of violence from an unknown part of the world that we would need to search for on a map. These brothers were us/are us. We need to take a good hard look at the way things are done, the kind of people we are and the kind of communities we are creating in our own country to figure out how to make this a little kind of thing a little less likely. The world is becoming a reay scary place. I'm not condoning the boston bombings. I think what happened was incredibly sad and that nobody on this earth needs to be assume an air of freedom only to have it ripped away in such a deadly fashion. I just don't think I'm naive about it. Many people's lives are ruined on a daily basis bc of acts of terror and violence-a broad spectrum of all sorts of fucked up. The only way to lesson the intensity/scope/whatever is to get to the root of the problem. By brushing it aside and shouting "death" and "Boston strong" people are actually ignoring a fundamental issue-why? And all of this solidarity is actually antithetical to democracy itself on so many levels. The whole situation makes my heart hurt. I mean I know people talking about parenting or rather lack there of..but were siblings questioned about whether or not they could potentially raise future mass murderers? For some it has altered the course of a personal history and interrupted a sense of continuity for generations to come. But why can we not explore the reasons behind why it happened and see if maybe somewhere along the way we made a wrong turn as a people and as a community? Why can't we face the ugly truth that he was and is one of our own? And why is it that all of us have the balls to talk so much trash but we as a country can't face evil and say "hey, you know what? We don't get you but I want to get you...as in understand you so that this is a rare occurrence and if I happen to see it again I am able to fix this shit before it goes too far and before we lose too many people" rather than this "Boston strong" bullshit that is nothing more than bravado masking an empty sense of community. I said before and I will say it again-I love boston and the people there will all my heart and soul. But this may have been prevented-that we may never know for sure but we can certainly make a valiant effort to at least try and prevent it from happening again. It doesn't start overseas-it happens at home. This is one boy's story that is so relevant and but a small piece of the bigger picture. America as a whole (sweeping generalization I'm aware) seems to have forgotten the fact that America was in fact created by immigrants, for immigrants and that was the beauty of it. Now we have been actively trying to marginalize them(of all colors, creeds etc) and the future is very, very uncertain. I would love for this event to create a sense of awareness about the bigger picture-we may be breeding a new generation of hate because of what we claim to be and what we actually are. That's the story, and it's important. He wasn't born a monster. He didn't look like one, talk like one, act like one, feel like one, even after his crime.
That's a story we need to examine, and the comparison of that handsome, likable face and the monstrosity that has come to live under it -- identified as a monster right there on the cover under that sweet-looking face -- is at the core of it.
Not to start with that face is to completely blow the story.

But freedom of the press is incredibly important, at least to me, even if the result is actually 'freedom to do something really stupid' to grab attention.

The typical RS demographic in other words. If the point of the article is "how did it come to this" then why use this photo, which is quite recent, as opposed to baby photos or something? This being RS, the article is probably a big festival of shame and blame of everyone except this little shithead. I saw a photo of bin Laden back in the 70s with friends/family. Everyone looked really happy and smiling, no headscarfs or hijabs or long beards or evil eyes. It's actually really interesting what happened there.

This was his face, and I'm pretty sure this pic is from his facebook or some other social media- it has been used in media before. There was already a groupie following of this guy because of his looks, and they insist he has to be innocent because he is cute. That story would be just as good as how one guy turned into a monster.

It made me think hard enough to where I'm no longer against using this image and can see the point of choosing this particular photograph for the context of the story.

I thought he looked so innocent and adorable and I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that this cute teenager ended up a terrorist.
That said, I absolutely do not think the people voting against this image are indicating they are censorship advocates. You can support freedom of press and still disagree with the choices of the media.

ReplyDeleteThis is what he looked/looks like. However it's more than just his face, it is what it now represents. He is one of the faces of America. As an immigrant, he is everything that America stands for and everything the country was built on. His family moved here (assumigly) to love the American dream. They lived in a culturally diverse and tolerant neighborhood, made friends, had jobs, and this boy was on all accounts REALLY well adjusted. When something happened within his family nobody really took notice. As with most immigrant families (old school families universally as well) they kept the details of their hardships to themselves and just carried on with the struggle. When the older brother couldn't/wouldn't swim against the tide and when that tide seemed to be sucking him out to sea his lifeboat became his religion. How many kids feel the same and use drugs or alcohol? How many kids (especially immigrants in the same situation!) join gangs? The numbers would probably be pretty distressing. Fact is, the Boston bombing was some jihad act of violence from an unknown part of the world that we would need to search for on a map. These brothers were us/are us. We need to take a good hard look at the way things are done, the kind of people we are and the kind of communities we are creating in our own country to figure out how to make this a little kind of thing a little less likely. The world is becoming a reay scary place.
I'm not condoning the boston bombings. I think what happened was incredibly sad and that nobody on this earth needs to be assume an air of freedom only to have it ripped away in such a deadly fashion. I just don't think I'm naive about it. Many people's lives are ruined on a daily basis bc of acts of terror and violence-a broad spectrum of all sorts of fucked up. The only way to lesson the intensity/scope/whatever is to get to the root of the problem. By brushing it aside and shouting "death" and "Boston strong" people are actually ignoring a fundamental issue-why? And all of this solidarity is actually antithetical to democracy itself on so many levels. The whole situation makes my heart hurt.
Side note-I'm from Rhode Island and went to university in Boston so my love for the city and it's people really knows no bounds. I live overseas now and have for nine years but the east coast will always hold a truly special place in my heart. I think this is why this whole thing is so upsetting to me. Major case of the sadz for all the families affected, the lives lost and torn apart.

But I do think it is unfair and extremely undemocratic to first assume this man is guilty without being given all the facts and secondly to now accuse his entire family of potentially raising future terrorists. I mean I know people talking about parenting or rather lack there of..but were siblings questioned about whether or not they could potentially raise future mass murderers? Why can't we face the ugly truth that he was and is one of our own? And why is it that all of us have the balls to talk so much trash but we as a country can't face evil and say "hey, you know what? We don't get you but I want to get you...as in understand you so that this is a rare occurrence and if I happen to see it again I am able to fix this shit before it goes too far and before we lose too many people" rather than this "Boston strong" bullshit that is nothing more than bravado masking an empty sense of community. I said before and I will say it again-I love boston and the people there will all my heart and soul. But this may have been prevented-that we may never know for sure but we can certainly make a valiant effort to at least try and prevent it from happening again. It doesn't start overseas-it happens at home. This is one boy's story that is so relevant and but a small piece of the bigger picture. America as a whole (sweeping generalization I'm aware) seems to have forgotten the fact that America was in fact created by immigrants, for immigrants and that was the beauty of it. Now we have been actively trying to marginalize them(of all colors, creeds etc) and the future is very, very uncertain. I would love for this event to create a sense of awareness about the bigger picture-we may be breeding a new generation of hate because of what we claim to be and what we actually are. If this kids face can create that awareness on even the lowest of levels then I am all for it. Besides..what about freedom of fucking expression? Don't we have a right as a people to say what we want? And to actively choose what to read, watch, or listen to? Exercise that right and enjoy the fact that we still have it-it's why we are here right?
There are millions and millions of émigrés that have and are assimilating successfully. They will continue to do so. Nothing is broken except the hearts and souls that are Hell bent on causing evil and destruction.
