Ditto... I remember them announcing his death on the radio as I got ready for school. I was so young. I was also bummed to hear about Brad Renfro's death
For me it was Layne Staley. I felt badly that he had been dead for a while until he was found because it made me think that he had no one. Everyone should have someone.
@AnonyMousE, ohhh yes, JFK, Jr.! I remember watching all the footage on TV before they found the remnants of the airplane. As soon as they announced that the plane was missing, my mother said, "It's the Kennedy curse. They'll only find the bodies. It's too bad because he seems like one of the good ones."
This is going to sound stupid but Ryan Dunn. I really grew up with them, watching them be jackasses. I felt like I was part of their group of friends. I remember them as CKY, and I even watched him host homewrecker.
I agree. If I see him on tv it always hits me right in the heart. Also- DJ AM. I saw blink 182 right after his death and it was heartbreaking to see these goofy guys get emotional in front of so many people.
I agree. If I see him on tv it always hits me right in the heart. Also- DJ AM. I saw blink 182 right after his death and it was heartbreaking to see these goofy guys get emotional in front of so many people.
Jon Eric Hexum (had a huge crush), Freddy Mercury (still can't believe he's gone - such a beautiful and perfect voice he had), and Princess Diana. I didn't consider myself to be a big fan of hers, but when I turned on the TV that day and saw the news ticker stating she was dead, I actually yelled, "No, not her, please, not her!"
The ones that die young are always shocking. I saw "Last 24 hours of" on Current about River Phoenix. He was shooting a movie with Judy Davis(?) when he died and was apparently really upset that she was a total bitch to him. One of those never meet your idols moments.
River Phoenix, Kurt Cobain and Princess Diana. I remember exactly where I was when I found out they had died. River especially hit me hard and I cried when I found out
Cory has really (unexpectedly) affected me. I'm a teacher, and today at school I had to talk about it a lot with grieving students. And although I was quite young when it happened, Roald Dahl
Anna Nicole. Even though it wasn't totally surprising, after she lost all of that weight, I was rooting for her to keep it together and make a comeback. She looked so great again for a while.
JFK Jr. I just loved him, and he seemed to really be maturing into someone who would make a difference for this country. When I lived in NYC he would always be spotted riding his bike around town. Everyone I knew who ran into him or had to deal with him in a work situation said he was a super nice, regular guy who went out of his way to put people at ease. It just seemed too cruel for him to die so young.
And I remember waking up early to watch Princess Diana's funeral, and it was so incredibly sad watching her boys being so stoic. She deserved a better life.
And one last one, Stevie Ray Vaughan. He had gotten his life together after rehab, and was committed to helping others who needing help getting off drugs. So talented, such a waste to die like that in a helicopter crash.
At least Judy Davis wasn't a phony. She only plays bitches in films. Often they are hilarious versions of bitches but there was never an ounce of Meg Ryan sweetness in her. River shouldn't have been too surprised.
Princess Diana, and it surprised me how much it hurt. I never considered myself a big fan. Also, JFK Jr. but I was a HUGE fan. My friends called to see if I was okay after he died!
Lucille Ball- I was doing a book report in 11th grade on her when she died. Lifelong dream to meet her. NO ONE has come close to her comedic acting. I did go to her grave in Jamestowm and saw her house on Roxbury Dr in Beverly Hills.
1. Stevie Ray Vaughan - so completely unexpected. I was in shock for a long time. LOVED him so much.
2. Freddie Mercury - he was EVERYTHING. There'll never be another one like him.
3. John Candy - It was like a huge punch in the gut when he passed. I remember the exact moment when I heard it on the radio. So completely unexpected.
4. Phil Hartman. Who would've thought? And seeing it all unfold on CNN. So sad.
5. Each of The Ramones as they passed away in succession. They WERE my high school experience.
6. Kurt Cobain. Another gut wrenching, shocking loss.
Adam Yauch, aka MCA from the Beastie Boys. Adam was just about my age. The Beasties have been on the soundtrack of my life...songs bring back such memories. I really felt like I lost a friend.
Princess Diana also struck a nerve. I was on call during my residency, and remember yelling at the TV "why aren't you transporting??? What the hell is this stabilizing in the field BS?".
Anna Nicole Smith. I was obsessed with her, she was such an entertaining mess. In 11th grade, we had to write a paper on a role model. I chose Anna. It was such BS, I wrote about how she was an inspiration to full figured women because she was a plus sized model. I changed her name, though, and used fake sources. I got an A on it.
Shannon Hoon's death upset me but the one that really got to me was Michael Hutchence. I cried for days. Both of those avoidable deaths were such a waste of talent.
Roger Ebert, mostly b/c of the way it was announced he was taking a leave of absence once day and then *bam* gone the next. Also, I saw his TED Talk and he and his wife made me cry. His passing made me think of her first, then him.
John Candy. I think I was a Freshman in high school and, I dunno, it just seemed really sad and unfair to me. I've never heard anything bad about the guy and when I see any film of his, from "Trains, Planes and Automobiles" to "Spaceballs", it sill feels sad. Also, he reminded me so much of my dad (who is still with us, thank god).
I was too young at the time to really understand, but in retrospect, Freddy Mercury's passing feels like a tremendous loss. My favorite voice, hands down.
Layne Staley, as someone mentioned above, was just too sad and tragic. Damn addiction. Damn, damn, damn it to hell. I would be hard-pressed to imagine circumstances that would be as sad for a family to lose their loved one. I cannot imagine being told the details of my son's or brother's death like that. *shudder*
and Phil Hartman, shocking in a whole different way----I have a Corona bottle opener that has his voice on it, or I think it is him and I am reminded of his passing each time
James Gandolfini - people still talking about him -just heard another great story about him yesterday someone who was lucky enough to meet him
@Pandora's_Pithos, I should have thought of Sean Taylor, too. I tend to classify athletes in a different category from other celebrities. I watched his funeral on TV and my heart was breaking for his family and his fiancee. He was only a week older than me.
Dan Snyder got everyone in Washington to stop hating on him because of how classy he was during that whole thing, but he still managed to ruin it.
I would not say I was ever horribly upset but I thought the following were sad:
Brittany Murphy, because so many celebs are such assholes and yet you never heard a bad word about this girl, even after she died.
Krissy Taylor because she was so young (17, I believe) and her death would have been 100% preventable if anyone had known she had a heart condition.
JFK Jr because I wanted him to run for president some day. I know he said he wouldn't, but he could have changed his mind. I also felt bad for his wife and her sister who were in the plane with him because that would have been a horrible way to die.
I really couldn't think of anyone until I started reading peoples' comments and sparked a lot of memories. I would have to say that I don't get "hit hard" by the death of anyone I don't personally know, but probably the saddest and most shocking is Phil Hartman.
@Karen, I hear ya - it had just hit me so hard, that he was the first [famous] person I thought of. I loved watching him play and was absolutely devastated when he passed. I went to the memorial for him at Redskins Park - it was so moving and incredibly sad.
River Phoenix - because I was so young I had no clue someone who in my tween eyes was so beautiful, young, talented and successful could be so haunted and damaged
Freddie Mercury - he was the one who truly drove home the fact that AIDS was not taking any prisoners
Princess Diana - because I really thought she finally had a shot at being happy
@Krissie My cousin interacted with Brittany Murphy through her job & said she was always so sweet to absolutely everyone.I also think she was extremely talented & highly underrated. Her death was so preventable and such a waste.Still makes me tear up thinking about it.
@fireflies I was really young (10) when Rebecca Schaeffer was murdered but I remember being really upset by it.
Oh man, I knew this would happen if I read this thread! Iceberg, I had no idea Ms. Bradley died! I read The Mists of Avalon at least once every couple of years.
The first was Ronnie Vanzandt and Steve and Cassie Gaines from Lynyrd Skynyrd, then later on Stevie Ray Vaughan. The biggest shock to the soul was Princess Di tho, she deserved many many years of happiness and to get to grow old and bounce grandbabies on her knee.
MJ was very shocking. It's still hard to believe that happened. Diana and JFK Jr were heartbreaking, and happened within a year of each other. I remember hearing she had been in a car accident and thinking the news was just taking a small story and blowing it out of proportion, never imagining it may be fatal. But Whitney hit me maybe the hardest because I just felt so bad for this tortured soul and her poor daughter. Also, my mom is an addict and I have always tried to prepare myself for losing her in the same way as Whitney- your body puts up with years of abuse and then finally just gives up one day.
George Carlin. I was fascinated by every word that came out of his mouth and was devastated when he died. I used to work with a man with a very similar name so when my mom told me he died I thought it was the other George. I thought (and said) that it was sad, but continued on with what I was doing. I wasn't surprised and it barely phased me. A few minutes later, when I realized it was George Carlin, I nearly collapsed on the floor. It's been years and I still think about him all the time. I never saw him perform live and I could kick myself for it.
Aaliyah. She & I were the same age when she died. Adam Yauch Princess Diana Michael Jackson JFK Jr. Gianni Versace Phil Hartman Everyone who rode The Challenger
I have felt sad for a bunch of celebrities that died like River Phoenix, Adam Yauch, Chris Farley, etc. But the only one I ever cried over was Kurt Cobain.
Michael Hutchence. He was the first singer I heard on radio whose voice absolutely made me stop everything I was doing. I was 12, in the hospital and was sitting in the rec room working on a Fill-In puzzle when that voice came on the radio, singing "What you need". Flash forward to 11:03 PM Nov 21, 1997, US time. I was at home writing on a script whem I got tired and decidex to watch tv. I turned on MTV and Daria, the cartoon, was on and there was the news crawl. I read "Hutchence was 37..." and I lost it. I got one of INXS' albums out of my cabinet and it was their greatest hits album and I just started screaming. No celeb death has ever hit me as hard before or since. What added to it was the grotesque manner of death (I wont go into that here) the fact he had an infant girl, plus the horrid rumors that swirled and still swirl to this day about his death. I still cant hear a song by him without crying. The aftermath was horrible and went on and on--his parents fighting, his siblings fighting, the band replacing him instead of being classy like Kurt Cobain's bandmates and forming a new band. Bob Geldof wound up with custody of Hutchence's baby after her mother was found dead a few years later. Every November 21 our time and November 22, it all comes back.
Princess Diana. My grandmother is English and collected anything and everything Diana when I was growing up. I'd dust the china with her pictures on it. I love her. The day before she died, I had gone to a butterfly house and purchased a bracelet with my allowance. When I found out, I went outside and put it in the gutter. I told my sister that those kids lost their mom and I just didn't feel right being so happy about my bracelet. Silly, but I was crushed and didn't quite understand why.
My first big celebrity death was Selena. My babysitter picked me up after school and told the news. And then she held me while I cried and watched the news coverage all afternoon.
I still vividly remember watching the news when Princess diana's death was announced.
Chris Farley bummed me out pretty bad too. Especially because I found out weeks after it happened.
The worst, has been my Golden Girls. I eat a cheesecake and watch the marathons and cry whenever one passes. May God prevent the day the world losses Betty White.
Princess Di. I stayed up all night to watch the wedding hooplah when I was young. She was so beautiful in her dress, I thought she looked like Cinderella. Not Charles..pfft. But Di was magical. When she died, I was a grown up, but it seemed as if that magic I believed in as a kid, died too. I cried for days. She wasn't perfect, but she was special.
Johnny Cash..but I think he was ready to go be with June. :-(
JFK Jr - I was at the beach with my parents and my daughter and stayed up all night. Actually had friends call me to see if I was ok.I was born in 1963 and grew up with him. Still haven't gotten over the loss of what he could have been and who he was.
Benjamin Hendrickson. I know, you've never heard of him. *L* He played Hal on ATWT and committed suicide a few years ago. For some reason, that just gutted me.
Alliyah Whitney Houston Heath Ledger Cory Monteith Freddie Mercury Michael Jackson Phil Hartman George Carlin Hunter S Thompson James Gandolfini Amy Winehouse Selena Bill Hicks Brandon Lee (seriously a truly unnecessary death even if of course they all kind of are)
River Phoenix. We were the same age and I guess it was that time, when you're a young adult, finally have your freedom, the worst behind you, the best in front of you and you think you're invincible.
I had a bit of success myself and was living the party life, not hardcore, but enough that it was a routine and then River died and it seemed like a wake up call.
Heath. I was offered a part in one of his early movies because I had dreads, but I didn't take it because they wanted to pass me off as a 90s hippie. No thanks. I regretted that later, would have loved to meet him.
I bawled over Michael Jackson, Jerry Orbach, Princess Diana, and Johnny Cash. I cried for days when Johnny died. I was too young to know who Freddie Mercury was when he died, but knowing his music now makes his death that much harder. He was incredible.
John Lennon and Anwar Sadat. With both of their assassinations, I knew the world had changed. That we lost something (not just the person) that we were not going to get back, and we were poorer for it.
Kurt Cobain, Lane Staley, Mike Starr, JFK Jr., and Michael Jackson. All so young with so much promise. I so hoped JFK Jr. would become a politician because I felt he could do great things for this country.
I remember Elvis because it happened right after my seventh birthday, and I remember all the grown-ups talking about how no one was seeing him in Vegas.
Personally, it was Nora Ephron because she wrote one of my favorite films, and she has influenced me as a writer. Second to her would be John Hughes, because he directed my teenage years. There really was something innocent and sweet about the 80s.
Cory Monteith. We are the same age and from the same city (Victoria). I didn't know him but somehow he always made me want to root for him. I loved the beautiful things he said about Vancouver (my home now) and seeing him be as passionate as me about the Canucks. I really can't wrap my head around his death. It's thrown me quite a bit and I don't usually mourn celebrity deaths. RIP Cory.
Joining all those who mentioned Princess Diana and JFK Jr. Still hard to believe they are both gone.
I felt very badly when I heard Brittany Murphy died and still think about her from time to time. So talented and sweet, but never really got the breaks she should have. I's also add Chris Penn to the list. I was a big fan. He always seem a bit troubled, but you got the sense there was a good guy underneath it all.
It seems everyone I would mention has been mentioned except for three (I mean, even my Chris Benoit one which I didn't think anyone would say) and those three are:
Eric Carr- Second drummer for KISS, died the same day as Freddie Mercury so it was overshadowed. Eric was such a loveable guy and a hell of a drummer. I've kept a picture of him that encapsulates him for me, he's laying in a hospital bed, playing with a model of his drum kit that a fan had made for him.
The second is Darryl Kyle. Pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. He died alone in a hotel room during a road trip from a heart attack. A week later the Cardinals also lost their longtime broadcaster Jack Buck. The season went to hell quickly after that. They just had lost too much too soon.
William "Paul Bearer" Moody. One of, if not the nicest man you could ever meet in wrestling. I'm just a fan or mark and he and I built up a friendship online to such an extent that he would send my family birthday cards and gave me an open invitation to "Casa De Moody" as he called it. If you think he sounds familiar, he was the rotund guy that used to come to the ring with The Undertaker, Kane and Mankind holding the ever present Urn. (Well, except for when Kama stole it and melted it down into a necklace lol) Man, I miss my weekly emails from him.
Roger Ebert, mostly because it really affected my life. Every movie I saw, I wanted to know what Ebert thought of it and I always loved having him to check in with, whether I agreed with what he said or not. I really miss his writing.
Diana - my mom and I remained stationary in the living room for hours, hoping she would pull through. When her death was announced, we both burst into tears.
Dale Earnhardt - because it became rapidly apparent that I had just watched a man die live on FOX.
The Columbia space shuttle disaster - because I have always loved the space program, and considered astronauts heroes.
For some reason, I was really thrown by Heath Ledger's death.
ReplyDeleteTruman Capote. I was so sad. I had always wanted to meet him.
ReplyDeleteJim Henson. Not sure why, but it threw me a loop. Also, Princess Diana.
ReplyDeleteBesides cory monteith I would have to say cory haim and jonathan brandis.
ReplyDeleteRiver Phoenix

ReplyDeleteI really couldn't think of anyone until I started reading peoples' comments and sparked a lot of memories. I would have to say that I don't get "hit hard" by the death of anyone I don't personally know, but probably the saddest and most shocking is Phil Hartman.
ReplyDelete@Karen, I hear ya - it had just hit me so hard, that he was the first [famous] person I thought of. I loved watching him play and was absolutely devastated when he passed. I went to the memorial for him at Redskins Park - it was so moving and incredibly sad.
ReplyDeleteSo true about Snyder!
Jfk sr, natalie wood, princess diana.
ReplyDeleteRiver Phoenix - because I was so young I had no clue someone who in my tween eyes was so beautiful, young, talented and successful could be so haunted and damaged
ReplyDeleteFreddie Mercury - he was the one who truly drove home the fact that AIDS was not taking any prisoners
Princess Diana - because I really thought she finally had a shot at being happy
wow - talk about a sequence of disillusions
Princess Diana
ReplyDeleteJames Gandolfini
Anna Nicole
@Krissie My cousin interacted with Brittany Murphy through her job & said she was always so sweet to absolutely everyone.I also think she was extremely talented & highly underrated. Her death was so preventable and such a waste.Still makes me tear up thinking about it.
ReplyDelete@fireflies I was really young (10) when Rebecca Schaeffer was murdered but I remember being really upset by it.
Princess Diana. I was, and still am, absolutely floored she died in the way she did. She was finally coming into her own and seemed happy.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Steve Irwin. He was such a doting husband and dad, and champion for animals. I was just devastated.
No death of someone who I don't know in person deserves my pain.
ReplyDeleteI celebrated the death of bin laden and some other terrorists, though.
Princess Diana

ReplyDeleteOh man, I knew this would happen if I read this thread! Iceberg, I had no idea Ms. Bradley died! I read The Mists of Avalon at least once every couple of years.
ReplyDeletePhil Hartman. I *adored* him.
ReplyDeleteI hope his children are doing well and thriving and know just how funny and what a brilliant artist their father was. Miss you, Phil!
John Lennon
ReplyDeleteJoey Ramone
John Belushi
Kurt Cobain
Princess Diana
Martin. Luther King yes I am old enough to remember
ReplyDeleteMJ was very shocking.
ReplyDeleteDavy Jones
ReplyDeleteGeorge Carlin.
ReplyDeleteHow could I forget Phil Hartman?! "The Real Deal with Bill McNeal," himself. Damn.
ReplyDeleteAaliyah. She & I were the same age when she died.
ReplyDeleteAdam Yauch
Princess Diana
Michael Jackson
JFK Jr.
Gianni Versace
Phil Hartman
Everyone who rode The Challenger
James Stewart and Adam Yauch, pretty diverse and I still get teary eyed thinking of either one.
ReplyDelete@Veee - yes, Randy Rhoads - what a shame. One of the most talented guitar players IMHO..
ReplyDeleteI have felt sad for a bunch of celebrities that died like
ReplyDeleteRiver Phoenix,
Adam Yauch,
Chris Farley, etc.
ReplyDeletePrincess Diana
ReplyDeleteJFK Jr
Heath Ledger
Patrick Swayze
Phil Hartman
Davy Jones
Michael Landon
Douglas Adams.
ReplyDeleteI was more upset by this than 9/11 that came a few months after.
I'm so glad someone mentioned Douglas Adams - what a funny, brilliant man and what a sad, sad loss for the world.
DeleteDavey Allison - I bawled when he died
ReplyDeletePrincess Diana, JFK jr, and Freddie Mercury were all bad
Davy Jones. It was like my youth died when he did.
ReplyDeleteOne more: Christopher Reeve. I just watched SOMEWHERE IN TIME over the weekend for the eighty-third time.
ReplyDeleteJFK
ReplyDeleteJFK Jr.
Dale Earnhardt
John Lennon
John Candy
Amy Winehouse
Corey Montieth
Princess Diana.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother is English and collected anything and everything Diana when I was growing up.
Michael Crichton, Jerry Orbach, Bea Arthur, Patrick Swayze, Pete Postlethwaite, Warren Zevon, Princess Di and JFK Jr.
ReplyDeleteMy first big celebrity death was Selena. My babysitter picked me up after school and told the news. And then she held me while I cried and watched the news coverage all afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI still vividly remember watching the news when Princess diana's death was announced.
ReplyDeleteJohnny Cash..but I think he was ready to go be with June.
:-(
MJ. It really felt like part of my childhood died with him.
ReplyDeletePolly Styrene, Joe Strummer, Ari Up, of the good ones with plenty left to give. Adam Yauch
ReplyDeleteAmy Winehouse for the crushing inevitability of it and that we were the same age.
Wilko Jones is going to be a hard one when he goes.
Jim Henson hit harder than I thought it would. Princess Diana because we're the same age. And JFK Jr.
ReplyDeleteBrittany Murphy. Didn't expect it to but I guess when you watch a movie countless times from the age of 6 you get a bit attached. (Clueless)
ReplyDeleteBelushi. Kinda took the fun out of cocaine and heroin
ReplyDeleteA lot of the aforementioned greatly saddened me but the one that absolutely wrecked me is the death of Elliott Smith.
ReplyDeleteBernie Mac.
ReplyDeleteJFK Jr - I was at the beach with my parents and my daughter and stayed up all night. Actually had friends call me to see if I was ok.I was born in 1963 and grew up with him. Still haven't gotten over the loss of what he could have been and who he was.
ReplyDeleteHeath Ledger - such a tortured but sweet soul
Princess Di -
Phil Hartman
Benjamin Hendrickson. I know, you've never heard of him. *L* He played Hal on ATWT and committed suicide a few years ago. For some reason, that just gutted me.
ReplyDeleteIn no particular order:
ReplyDeleteAlliyah
Whitney Houston
Heath Ledger
Cory Monteith
Freddie Mercury
Michael Jackson
Phil Hartman
George Carlin
Hunter S Thompson
James Gandolfini
Amy Winehouse
Selena
Bill Hicks
Brandon Lee (seriously a truly unnecessary death even if of course they all kind of are)
River Phoenix
ReplyDeleteMichael Jackson
Patrick Swayze
Brittany Murphy - Clueless is my favorite movie ever. It was my childhood.
ReplyDeleteHeath Ledger
JFK Jr
Diana (I was very young when both Diana & JFK Jr passed but I remember how shocking & surreal it all was)
River Phoenix. We were the same age and I guess it was that time, when you're a young adult, finally have your freedom, the worst behind you, the best in front of you and you think you're invincible.
ReplyDeleteI had a bit of success myself and was living the party life, not hardcore, but enough that it was a routine and then River died and it seemed like a wake up call.
Raul Julia.
ReplyDeleteJohn Ritter.
ReplyDeleteRiver Phoenix
ReplyDeleteMichael Hutchence
John Lennon
Jeff Buckley
In no particular order:
ReplyDeletePrincess Diana
JFK Jr
Laurence Olivier
Natalie Wood
Heath Ledger
Phil Hartman
River Phoenix
ReplyDeleteJFK, Jr.
John Lennon. I was a freshman in college, Reagan had just been elected President, and there was no question that the '60's were O-V-E-R.
ReplyDeleteAaliyah. Really cried for her.
ReplyDeleteRedd Fox. Great comidian.
The little girl from the Poltergise(?) movies.
Even though I was to young to know who she was Aaliyah's death has shocked me.
ReplyDeleteMia Zapata. It could have been any one of us.
ReplyDeleteHeath. I was offered a part in one of his early movies because I had dreads, but I didn't take it because they wanted to pass me off as a 90s hippie. No thanks. I regretted that later, would have loved to meet him.
Princess Diana. Still makes me sad.
I bawled over Michael Jackson, Jerry Orbach, Princess Diana, and Johnny Cash. I cried for days when Johnny died. I was too young to know who Freddie Mercury was when he died, but knowing his music now makes his death that much harder. He was incredible.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lennon. I was 16 or 17 at the time.
ReplyDeleteJohn Lennon and Phil Hartman. I still cry when I think of how tragic Phil' death was. Michael Landon was another one that hurt.
ReplyDeleteLayne Staley and Stevie Ray Vaughn
ReplyDeleteJohn Lennon and Anwar Sadat. With both of their assassinations, I knew the world had changed. That we lost something (not just the person) that we were not going to get back, and we were poorer for it.
ReplyDeleteSteve Irwin's death hit me hard. Liz Taylor. Gandolfini's most recently. Cory's death is also pretty sad because I was a big fan.
ReplyDeleteAlso; Ledger, Michael Jackson, John Ritter and Whitney Houston.
I don't even want to think about how I'm gonna react when Lauren Bacall dies.
Heath Ledger because I was in NYC about a block away from his apartment at the time and experienced the media frenzy and fan mourning.
ReplyDeleteWhitney Houston .....was hoping for a big comeback. Now everytime I hear her songs I think if her funeral.
ReplyDeleteKurt Cobain, Lane Staley, Mike Starr, JFK Jr., and Michael Jackson. All so young with so much promise. I so hoped JFK Jr. would become a politician because I felt he could do great things for this country.
ReplyDeleteJFK Junior and Carolyn Bessette, Princess Diana, Jade Goody
ReplyDeleteRiver Phoenix, Kurt Cobain, Jesse Bernstein.
ReplyDeletePrincess Diana, with JFK Jr close
ReplyDeleteI remember Elvis because it happened right after my seventh birthday, and I remember all the grown-ups talking about how no one was seeing him in Vegas.
ReplyDeletePersonally, it was Nora Ephron because she wrote one of my favorite films, and she has influenced me as a writer. Second to her would be John Hughes, because he directed my teenage years. There really was something innocent and sweet about the 80s.
I forgot JFKjr due to the wall to wall coverage, and River Phoenix because he was a week younger than me.
ReplyDeleteCory Monteith.
ReplyDeleteWe are the same age and from the same city (Victoria). RIP Cory.
These posts are reminding me. John Candy, Aaliyah, Amy Winehouse, Brittany Murphy, Lady Di, James Gandolfini, and Cory....
ReplyDeleteJoining all those who mentioned Princess Diana and JFK Jr. Still hard to believe they are both gone.
ReplyDeleteI felt very badly when I heard Brittany Murphy died and still think about her from time to time. So talented and sweet, but never really got the breaks she should have. I's also add Chris Penn to the list. I was a big fan. He always seem a bit troubled, but you got the sense there was a good guy underneath it all.
Tim Russert. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteIt seems everyone I would mention has been mentioned except for three (I mean, even my Chris Benoit one which I didn't think anyone would say) and those three are:
ReplyDeleteEric Carr- Second drummer for KISS, died the same day as Freddie Mercury so it was overshadowed.
@Rowdy - You're absolutely right about Darryl Kyle and Jack Buck. I'm a Cards fan, and that was ROUGH.
ReplyDeleteRoger Ebert, mostly because it really affected my life. Every movie I saw, I wanted to know what Ebert thought of it and I always loved having him to check in with, whether I agreed with what he said or not. I really miss his writing.
ReplyDeleteDiana - my mom and I remained stationary in the living room for hours, hoping she would pull through. When her death was announced, we both burst into tears.
ReplyDeleteDale Earnhardt - because it became rapidly apparent that I had just watched a man die live on FOX.
The Columbia space shuttle disaster - because I have always loved the space program, and considered astronauts heroes.
Princess Diana and Michael Jackson
ReplyDeleteD.J. A.M... The whole struggle with sobriety, then finally staying clean for years until after that horrific plane crash.
ReplyDelete
