  6. Well, my city and area was recently flooded and my boyfriend's parents and my grandparents both lost their houses. I've been hosting a random couple at my place since they've been displaced, and the whole city is pretty much in shambles. I don't want to think about Christmas...

  7. And my boyfriend's job was completely flooded so he's out of work for the next 3-4 months, so I really really don't want to think about Christmas.

  10. I never really stop. I shop year round for gifts. If I find something that makes me think of someone in particular or that I know they could use, I'll go ahead and get it. Saves me lots of panic in December.

  16. I bought a couple of Christmas gifts this week. I always have a few random gifts in the cupboard for when I forget a birthday or whatever.

I have a lot of nieces and they range from 2 years to 28 years old, so a bit of a wide selection of gifts.

  18. @Svetlana

Are you in Canmore, Bragg Creek, Calgary, or High River? My sympathies to you, your family, and everyone affected by the devastating floods. I hope that you get the help that you need in this very trying time.

  19. Never for at least five years, unless you count the fucking commercials that make me fed up of it from october that year.

  20. Christmas is hard for me. It was my mom's favorite, and we lost her last year. I got a tree and decorated my apartment, but unless we move to a bigger place, we won't be doing that this year. Despite space limitations, I couldn't bear to take the tree down until the end of January. All those long stories aside, I usually get into the Christmas spirit after thanksgiving.

  21. December 26th, and shop and plan all year long. I love Christmas, heck I love all the Fall holidays. I put my trees up Nov 1st; the husband gets all the stuff when he puts away the Halloween decorations.

  22. All the time. We are looking at a new house and were already discussing where the trees would all go. :)

  23. I never stop. I try and make every Christmas really special. So that means the cards have a theme and need to be clever. Packages and tree need to coordinate. Trips planned. I do very little for all other holidays (only a plug-in pumpkin for Halloween). Christmas makes me happy. One of my friends thinks something must have happened over Christmas in my childhood, because it just means more to me.

  24. For my random acts of kindness, usually around spring after the tax stuff is done. For my family, I refuse to think about it until after Thanksgiving is over.

  25. September! I have to start making lists and a budget or I go WAY overboard at Christmas and New Year's...

  26. Thanks @mommabear and @auntliddy, I'm in Calgary, my grandparents are in High River and my boyfriend's parents are in Drumheller. My boyfriend's job is downtown...
I just don't know how to process it, most people I've encountered lately have something negative to say. Mostly along the lines of 'well you live in a place called High River' or 'just gotta roll with the punches.' I know I'm still alive and stuff, just very freaking frustrated and don't really see the positive/want to be smiley/happy. It's so much more complicated than people think. And there's lost of situations with each family. It's frustrating seeing a lot of people on Facebook/Twitter commenting on how it's 'not that bad' and 'other places have had it worse' etc. I know that, but it doesn't make it any easier for us right now.

    1. People just do not know how to relate or deal with this kind of thing. If you haven't experienced it it is very hard to comprehwnd the impact.

My wishes are that you keep your health and find community in the midst of all this. Much love&light to you and to the region. No one ever knows what to do or how to deal until it happens and I pray that your experience brings a new depth of connection and wisdom. May the rainbows shine amidst the clouds and storms of change.

  28. Thanksgiving-ish.

I'm really sorry Svetlana, that stinks.

  29. I start thinking about it when they start the commercials 5 months early and it makes me angry.

  30. I never think about shopping. I usually don't buy gifts. Too stressful. I just enjoy the time off with my family and get excited about that.
