Wait, What? Michael Douglas Says Oral Sex Gave Him Throat Cancer
When Michael Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer, everyone assumed it was because of smoking. Despite what Michael Douglas said, his throat cancer probably did have something to do with smoking. He told The Guardian that he contracted throat cancer from HPV that he got from performing oral sex on a woman. What The Guardian discovered is that type of HPV generally goes away after a few years unless you are a smoker in which case it can stay around for a long time. Do you think he got it from Catherine Zeta Jones? The Guardian also discovered that men who perform oral sex on women were three times more likely to get HPV than women who perform oral sex on men.
TMI _
ReplyDeleteWell it is good to know that MD is an equal opportunity oral performer lol
ReplyDeleteWell I was glad he mentioned it. Most very serious conditions trace to bacteria and viruses. Our popular perception of disease 'causes' I think is really detrimental to early detection and treatment. HPV is a stealthy little blighter which causes HUGE problems. Getting tested is a great idea for all.
ReplyDeleteOff my soapbox!
If I ever have cancer, may God let it come from licking some lady-looking-as-CZJ's private parts and not from breathing car smoke, or working too much.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, if you can get it from going down on Catherine Zeta Jones, Michael Douglas may have been the first person in human history to actually popularize cancer!
ReplyDeleteI better not hear about any fuckin guys refusing to go down on their ladies because they "might get cancer." Just sayin.
ReplyDeletePussy kills,pussy kills.
DeleteThis
The husband sent the article today and said I had a killer pussy. Granted he's a smart ass and was only joking but I bet some guys out there will use this as an excuse.
DeleteI'm sorry, but, um, gross.
ReplyDeleteThe more you know?
ReplyDeleteThis HPV is very much on the rise in men from going down, and the AMA wants men to get the Guardia vaccine as well.
ReplyDeleteA horndog like MD---World-class level of fucking in the 70's & 80's---certainly had exposure to HPV years ago, before CZJ.
ReplyDeleteLOTS of people have at least one strain of HPV. and herpes too.
As an aside----
A 'friend' on FB, who is not a doctor, posted this story with her theory that one can't get throat cancer from anything other than demon smokes & liquor, and has declared this story a fraud. I'd love to slap the taste out her mouth, if she weren't all the way in Miami.
Don't you HATE finding out on FB that your friend of decades is so so dumb and judgemental?
Yes. I had a "friend" go on a ridiculous racist tirade about a week ago. Deleted.
DeleteWell this is just great. It's hard enough to get some guys to do oral sex without giving them this excuse. Mr. B had an oral cancer a few years ago, never smoked or chewed tobacco, rarely drinks, and after he heard this he's all in a twitter thinking that's how he got the cancer. Thanks a lot Michael Douglas.
ReplyDeleteYou know there's no history of cancer in his family, parents are still with us...
ReplyDeleteHe might just be right...STD's are not a laughing matter they are serious and can lurk in the body waiting to strike...
Thanks Michael you might just have saved some lives..
Not that he was having too much oral sex- but it is linked to men to smoke a lot and have a lot of sexual partners who he performs oral sex on. and whats more interesting .. is that both boys and girls can get the HPV vaccine and prevent throat cancer in men and cervical cancer in women.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be interesting to see how CZJ reacts to this if at all. She might not be too thrilled about having her husband publicly blurt out intimate details of their sex life. Makes me wonder just what Douglas's motives were for doing so. Was he just trying to be controversially humorous? Is his mind going? Was he trying to piss CZJ off in the hope that she'll end the marriage without trying to take him to the cleaners financially? I have a feeling that this story's only beginning to play out.
ReplyDeleteI like your theory. I'll he's trying to get rid of her.
Delete^^i'll bet
DeleteExcept the vaccine has caused some serious side effects... I'm holding off on it for my son.
ReplyDeleteCarpet munching is just gross.
ReplyDeleteI think he overshared!
ReplyDeleteI'm willing and available to find out if this is bs or not.
ReplyDeleteTMI??!! I think not. Kudos to MD for discussing such an 'icky' topic. *Not* talking about it doesn't make it miraculously go away.
ReplyDeleteAnd you don't have to an epic horndog like MD to contract a virus. It only takes one exposure, one time to contract HPV (& other viruses) & let it go undetected. Getcher head out of your asses (or in this case, other people's asses) & get your kids vaccinated, talk about the less obvious STD's and tell them to have fun in life but BE SAFE for fucks sake!!
Jesus, a few simple conversations would prevent so much heartache! Again, kudos to MD, he just earned a whole lot more respect from me.
IIRC, he didn't say outright that that is for-sure how he got it. He said that it's a possibility. Who knew, though?!
ReplyDeleteITA, mygeorgie. I hope you didn't think I was saying his HPV was CAUSED by him being an epic horndog for decades---I was just saying it's highly unlikely that he wasn't exposed to HPV before CZJ. That's just silly since so many have it, and MD probably had 100 unprotected sex partners before her. Especially before the HIV era, body fluid sharing was no thang at all.
ReplyDeletePeople think this is so TMI, but it IS important for men to know their risk too. A straight man admits he has enjoyed cunnilingus?! Pearls=Clutched!
I'd be interested in finding out how he knows that his throat cancer was caused by HPV. Since most HPV testing for men (of the non-wart variety of the virus) is for research purposes only (ie not for the general public), I'm not really sure how he could definitively state this.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, perhaps Michael Douglas is not considered "general public". Still, even testing positive for HPV wouldn't necessarily mean that that's the cancer culprit.
Sounds, to my cynical ears, like he's spinning this into some advocacy/awareness campaign. Not all bad...but also not that helpful considering men who have asymptomatic HPV generally never know they have it. (And can't get tested for it either.)
There are specific markers, like antibodies, that will show up in the cancer cells that are unique to an HPV cancer.
DeleteI doubt it was from CZJ, more like from his sex addict years.
ReplyDeleteIs there a home HPV test? Something to wave in front of your gentleman
To prove its greenlite down there.
@B626, No. HPV can only be detected with a PAP.
ReplyDeleteAnd why would you doubt it was from CZJ? A startling amount of women have HPV. It's astounding. Women from all walks of life with varying degrees of sexual experience.
ReplyDeleteliv---Only because he was like 50 and an admitted sex addict for YEARS before he even met CZJ. Many of those years were in the anything goes era too. I just don't like people blaming his current while forgetting his notorious past that he himself is hardly ashamed of, it seems.
ReplyDeleteI don't like that there's blame at all with HPV. It's ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteFor most people, HPV goes away after a year with healthy living. It's not a permanent condition.
Anyway...no shame in HPV. All I'm saying.
It's a virus that at times can remain dormant for years but there are cases of flare ups . Folks unlike what we are taught to believed are honest about sexual history with present and future partners. Some women have HPV didn't think its necessary to tell their because they figure it none of their business. Some fucks that they are.
DeleteAnd yes, there are men as well.
Blaine and Antwaan are in bed together laughing their asses off .
ReplyDeleteMichael Douglas on a Pussy Riot? Who would have thought? Seriously something like 7 out of 10 people have some type of HPV- unless you select your one and only life partner at age 10- you are probably going to encounter it in your lifetime.
ReplyDelete@Pogue - then by all means, don't munch any. I'm personally very happy that Mr. Kay doesn't share your views. *G*
ReplyDeleteRight. One need not be a "sex addict" to be exposed to HPV!!
ReplyDelete@just curious: Educate yourself. I think you may be confusing symptomatic HPV with asymptomatic HPV. Men DO NOT KNOW they have the asymptomatic variety, and thus it is very easily (and innocently) spread.
ReplyDeleteWomen can test positive but 6 months later have a negative PAP. There is NO "flare up" with the cancer-causing HPV.
Read a little. Stop calling people "fucks" when they quite honestly, in most cases, have NO IDEA they have HPV.
If it's the wart variety, it's a very different case, and that would cause flare-ups. However, the wart variety is not linked to long-term health effects like cancer.
You know what ? I'll take a different slant with you. I will go read up on HPV because there are a lotta shady fucks out there.Try to avoid looking at the graphic pics but I'll do you a solid and read.
DeleteLiv---just curious is a resident troll. Please ignore it.
ReplyDeleteAh...I thought I smelled eggs.
ReplyDeleteThanks, libby! :)
Nah, that's the armpit of the bitch above you.
DeleteYeah, he's all racial and misogynistic and uses insults where not needed---Standard troll. And he's been here for YEARS, off and on.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Sounds like you're talking about your forefathers .
DeleteWhat has not been discussed in this thread is that there is 60+ viruses that are part of the HPV group. About four or five of them can lead to cancer.
ReplyDeleteOnly a virus outside the body can be killed, it doesn't just go away. There is a vaccine for it though to prevent it.
ReplyDeleteboy. take the romance and relationship out of oral sex and it just sounds ewwwww, lol.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard out here for a pimp.
ReplyDeleteMichael Douglas apparently had pecialized testing done and his throat cancer was indeed associated with a cancer-causing strain of HPV.
ReplyDeleteFacts
1) HPV can lie dormant for years, even decades.
2) HPV has been associated with head, neck, and anal cancers in men.
3) Men cannot be tested for HPV, but they can be vaccinated against it now when they are boys.
4) Approx 90% of women have been exposed to HPV. Most of our bodies clear it within 2 years. It is generally found as a result of an abnormal pap smear.
5) It is passed via skin-to-skin contact, much like herpes.
6) The use of dental dams during oral sex can considerably reduce the transmission of HPV.
7) You don't have to be a sex addict to contract HPV. Your risk does increase with your number of partners.
Get the facts. Spread truth, not misinformation.
Dr. K
It's way more likely men are getting the HPV from going down on each other. Don't buy this scenario at all.
ReplyDeleteWow I learned a lot here today. Thanks all especially Kimberly RR.
ReplyDeleteGay men rejoicing. Wonder if Perez Hilton commented on this yet.
ReplyDeleteLibby: No worries, my comment was directed at the general attitude that only skanks & mansluts get STDs. You & yer armpit are always cool.
ReplyDeleteSeeing the plethora of ignorance & naivety about STDs on here, it's no bloody wonder there's still such a widespread health threat and so many teenage pregnancies, in this freekin day and age! There is no hope for our children if 50% of the population is so proudly misinformed or just plain dumb as fuck.
Read a book, get educated, ask questions & talk to your kids (& each other!) in a loving, EDUCATED dialogue.
I used to be proud of my ability to stay down for several minutes without coming up for air, and now I find out that diving can kill me!?? There's no justice in this world.
ReplyDeleteMy 14 year old son has finished the 3 round HPV vaccine. I am very happy that he will be somewhat protected and find it irresonsible when we KNOW that HPV causes cancer to NOT vaccinate them. I also told him exactly what the vaccine is for (just as I have every other vaccine he's received) and we both feel it is every bit as important as MMR or any other vaccine. He is happy to know that when the time comes he is reducing the risk of everyone he will come in contact with.
ReplyDeleteMerck owes MD a huge thank you. How many parents will be calling their son's doctor today to start them on Gardasil?
ReplyDeleteNomnom83, i was just thinking that! the winners here are big pharma.
ReplyDeleteI'm most shocked by the BJ stats. I always assumed it would be the male more likely to pass the germ, not the femail. More reason to be glad I'm single.
ReplyDeleteIt might be a win for big pharma, but I think MD would agree "An ounce of prevention..."
ReplyDeleteI am glad there is a vaccine for HPV. How quickly people forget we used to die of measles. This anti-vaccination stand that so many are taking is scary. We have had a number of babies die in Australia due to preventable diseases flaring up where there are pockets of unvaccinated children. I would have gladly had the HPV vaccine if it was around when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteJust watched a very informative TED lecture yesterday on a chemical that gets into the food supply that converts testosterone to estrogen and is causing havoc with all animals, including humans (can't think of the name). It has been shown to change a frog in utero from male to female, to cause deformities in the frogs i.e. testes & ovaries & more of them than there should be, 3 testes instead of two etc. It is also shown to affect the fertility of human males by affecting the testes and preventing sperm production. It also causes cancer. Today we 40-50,000 more chemicals in our bodies than our grandparents did. Food for thought since we are discussing cancer.
I've been eating at the Y since I was 16. Not gonna stop. Ever.
ReplyDeleteDid everyone see the rest of the quote?
ReplyDelete'But yeah, it's a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.'
Huh? That's like saying smoking caused lung cancer, so everyone needs to smoke more to cure it.
You know how they say brothers don't eat coochie, with exception to Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, En Vogue and the Fly Girls from the first season of "In Living Color", I try hard to live up to that stereotype.
Deletejust curious well youre a white woman so thats probably easy for you to uphold
DeleteWhatever rocks your boat, tell ya' pops, I said to save me a seat beside the Throne.
DeleteI just read where Michael Douglas denies ever saying this.
ReplyDeleteA friend of a friend had hpv and a guy friend of mine was about to bone her, so I begged him to use his brain and abstain. It was hard because she was easy and obsessed with him, but this was a few years ago when hpv was first coming out as an epidemic.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to sex , it's better to be ignorant than INFECTED.sometimes you need to follow your inner voice and leave that pussy alone.everyone's coy about their sexuality. don't wanna be handled a pamphlet and prescription AFTER the doctor's visit.
ReplyDeleteNo, no, no, NO! You've got it all wrong. He got throat cancer from eating pussy WHILE smoking and THEN chasing it all down with whiskey.
ReplyDeletemy brother got esophageal (throat) cancer and died a year after diagnosis. if he indeed has stage IV "throat cancer" he most likely won't make it very many years longer. usually one does not live 5 yrs past diagnosis.
ReplyDeleteoh, he never smoked, did not drink. Just had acid reflux.
I love eating pussy but maybe I'll stick to fingering from now on...
ReplyDeleteThe worst/best thing about this story is that it pretty much confirms hpv's danger to men and in a way that will get more exposure. I, myself have known for years that it can cause prostate, rectal, testicular, and oral cancer in men but nearly every dude I know claim otherwise. They say it only effects women...ignorant people will be ignorant.
