A couple of weeks ago, two original readers, who happen to be twins wrote to me to talk about one of their best friends. I Tweeted their request, but yesterday, I was at Target and they have an electronic billboard and right when I looked up, I saw the billboard talking about their friend and took that as a sign that I need to do more than Tweet, and to do a post about their friend Nina.
Nina has lymphoma. She now has one month to find a bone marrow donor. If she finds one, doctors think she will live. Nina is married with a two year old son. Nina was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in September of 2012. She endured 7 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy at UCLA to treat the disease, but after only two months of remission, the lymphoma recurred in her brain. Nina is currently undergoing continued chemotherapy to control the disease, but the aggressiveness of the disease requires an urgent stem cell transplant. Because of her Asian heritage, finding a match has been very challenging.
What her friends are asking is that you to please join the bone marrow registry by either getting typed with a home typing kit, or by getting typed in person at a local drive in LA, SF or NYC, especially if you are of Asian heritage. The process to find out if you are a match is very simple! Just order a kit, swab your cheek, and send the swab back in.
On the site, which you can access here, you can find a drive in your area and the dates of the drive. Even if you are not a match for Nina, hopefully, you can be a match for someone who needs your help.
I-I'm here. We can do the news now. It's all right, everyone! We can do the news. Hold on. Why are we all standing around? Let’s go!
ReplyDeleteWhat? Wait, wait! Veronica, please, tell me this is some kind of sick, tasteless joke.
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! Sorry, I just can't stay away. This site is SO addicting. I hope all you folk are having a good day. I'll check back later, I have to help MY bf demolish a building.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you did this to me! You read my news! I thought you were kidding! I thought it was a joke!
ReplyDeleteGood Post, Enty.

ReplyDeleteI even wrote it down in my diary! "Veronica had a very funny joke today." I laughed at it later that night!
ReplyDeleteGet out! Just go! We are through! Through!! Because of your actions! Scorpion woman!
ReplyDeleteThank you for moderating
ReplyDeleteI even wrote it down in my diary! "Veronica had a very funny joke today." I laughed at it later that night!
ReplyDeleteI'm already on the registry, but I hope this encourages others to join!
ReplyDeleteIf comment moderation has been enabled, then why is it just the troll comments getting through?
ReplyDeleteBecause he never actually moderated. The note just said that in the coming weeks he would decide if he needed to moderate.
DeleteMy comments are being moderated. It is almost 9pm on Thursday June 27. I think the plan is working JUST like the Cone of Silence in Get Smart. Trolls are winning this game. Boo!
DeleteSad :( Best of luck to her!
ReplyDelete@Cathy - maybe the comments attacking other ppl are what they're trying to stop?
ReplyDeleteEverybody should have time fo' that!

DeleteTime for what?
DeleteWE HAVE TO GO BACK
ReplyDeleteNice, Enty! We could also try to sell shirts to help, what about that?
ReplyDeleteGreat, so now we're being censored? Seriously, Enties? I really don't mind a group of funny tolls popping in every other month or whatever. THEY won't stop me from coming here, but comment moderation probably will.
ReplyDeleteGood.
DeleteWhy do we have to read the whole anchormsn script
ReplyDeleteFYI in Canada it is so easy to be on the registry - go to www.onematch.ca. They send the kit to your house - swab your mouth - and send it back. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks-will do! Prayers for Nina!
DeleteI don't appreciate anything in moderation.
ReplyDeleteEsp. moderation
DeleteEnty's afraid of the truth... lol
ReplyDelete@Sugar +1!!!!
ReplyDeleteSad...I hope this works for her. :(
Is anyone going to sell t-shirts? That worked out so well last time.
ReplyDeleteYeah! The t-shirt gig always works out well!
ReplyDeleteWow. That is all.
ReplyDeleteI wish her healthy recovery:)
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I hope she finds a match fast.
ReplyDeleteI just registered because of Enty's post. It was very easy & will be well worth it if I'm able to help anyone (although I'm not of Asian descent)
ReplyDeleteSorry for the repeat posts. Moderation is key.
ReplyDeleteIn the US, you can register at BeTheMatch.org and they'll send you a free kit. It has a cheek swab it in it with free return postage and information about being a donor. It's free and you can save someone's life! Be the match!
ReplyDeleteI cannot register--I tried last year. I'm POISON from having an auto-immune disease.
ReplyDeleteI feel ya Libby. I never got to my 10 pints bllod donor pin for the same reason. (I could point out the problems but you know.)
DeleteIt's like signing your donor card AND discussing it with your family so simple and means everything.
Thank you for posting this story, Enty.
I will probably not be able to either due to autoimmune. Crap.
DeleteBut i will post the two sites on my FB and ask my friends to register. It woukd be a great birthday gift to give myself.
The other on is to raise $1000 to dig a well for folks who do not have access to clean water. I hope to spend tge month of July getting that money raised. I will collect dollars to get the job done-whatever it takes.
Thank you Enty for posting this and helping to share Nina's campaign.
ReplyDeleteWe need to get 20,000 people typed in the next 5 weeks to statistically stand a chance. Thank you to everyone who has registered.
Here is a news clip about Nina: http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Bone-Marrow-Donor-Needed-Transplant-Cancer-Nina-Louie-211067581.html
Mari--I'd always been an 'eager' organ donor too. Now if I die, nobody gets my organs, or my eyes or skin. Wasteful. I've told my NoK & BF to try and give me to a medical school if THEY want me.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you're a fellow patient.
I registered! If I can't help Nina, hopefully I can help someone, someday. Thanks for posting, Enty.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note- all the Trolls...haha funny, whatever- but seriously, on a serious post like this? It's kind of disrespectful. If the comments are being moderated- I get letting the funny ones through on other posts- but on this one, it shouldn't be allowed.
I am on the registry already, but I hope someone else is encouraged to join. It's quick - just a swab to the mouth and you could save someone's life.
ReplyDeleteI've been registered for about 8 years. Never been called but hoping I will someday. What a wonderful gift to be able to give somebody.
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting this up!
ReplyDelete~ Biggest Anaheim Duck fan you know.
Thank you so much for posting this to help Nina and all of those in need!
ReplyDeleteI shared this as well hope she finds a match
