Naked & Afraid - Nik Wallenda

It's amazing what is on other than Sunday Night Baseball. Last night, because of the massive rain delay in the baseball game, I found myself watching Naked & Afraid. I had heard of it and read a review of it and also read that an executive producer of the show almost died while scouting it, but I had not really planned on watching it. There I was though, watching a man who had taken time off from stalking people and planning his killing spree to be on reality television for three weeks. He was joined by a 20 something woman college student from Minnesota who has a future diet bestseller on her hands. How To Lose 25 Pounds In 21 Days - The Turtle And Snake Diet. It is going to be huge. For some reason I thought the 21 days the pair spent naked in the jungle would be stretched out over the entire season of the show. Nope. All 21 days are jammed into one hour which is good if you find the pair annoying which I did and because the show is essentially the boring parts of Survivor. All they do all day is sleep and wait for it to be 21 days before they hike out. Sure, the guy killed a killer snake and the woman killed a turtle and there was some fire which almost killed the guy, but, that took 5 minutes. The other 55 minutes was spent by me wondering why I'm watching the show.

After that show, then I watched the recorded from an earlier broadcast of Nik Wallenda crossing the Grand Canyon. Since it was recorded from an earlier live broadcast, I was pretty sure Nik lived or they would not have shown it, despite Discovery's willingness to show the death of his great-grandafther 3 times in the first 15 minutes of the show. I also thought it was nice of Nik's wife, who looks remarkably like his mother, who I have read is also his cousin to show her concern for her husband in his endeavor, by wearing something that would show a ton of cleavage. Then they cut to great-grandfather dying again. Oh, are Nick from The Weather Channel who somehow talked himself into this gig.

  6. As someone who likes survival shows and spends a decent amount of time in the backcountry, the point of that show is that most of the time when you're in a situation where you need to survive IS doing nothing. That just means more reality than Survivor or Bear "I just stay in this hotel" Grylls.

  7. I thought it was interesting, they weren't the most attractive people so the hot factor was taken out right away.

But you saw the guy mentally breaking down pretty quickly for not being fawned on for cutting some wood and killing a snake. Granted it was the same kind of snake that took out the producers foot.

The woman was calm cool and collected the entire time and caught a turtle which yielded much more meat than the snake did. Kept the fire going and held it together the entire time.

It really shows back in the cave man days other than brute strength of the men. The women did all the work.

    Times haven't changed much since.

  8. Aha, so the Wallenda show was taped? Well, that makes sense. I wondered how they could ever risk him, y'know, actually dying on camera.

  15. They were two of the most miserable people ever. I was willing to spend 21 days naked in the jungle just to avoid watching.

  16. Hmm, I'm worried, because I totally understood this post. I, too, was bummed out by the long rain delay in St. Louis, and my youngest son has been obsessed with watching the tight rope deal. I didn't know about or watch the stranded in the jungle show, but it sounds like something we'd DVR around here.

Help me, people, I'm identifying with Enty :-)!!!!!

  17. Naked and Afraid was the absolute worst. They guy was giving off "creeper" vibes the entire hour long episode.
I also watched the Nik Wallenda stunt. Noticed Joel Osteen was there for Nik's spiritual support. Interesting.

  18. @figgy...the Grand Canyon stunt was shown live with a 10 second delay in case something horrific happened. Enty was saying he recorded it.

  19. My son watched it last night and recapped it for me this morning.

What in blue hell is becoming of the Discovery Channel?!

He said the guy kept falling down and crying, and the girl went off wandering in the night, and came back with the campsite on fire! I have a feeling from what my son said, this dude will totally go postal before it is all over.

I hate to say it, but it totally made me want to watch it. (sad but true!)

Anyone old enough to remember ABC Wide World of Sports on Saturday mornings? (yes I am that old!) and I remember when Grandpapa Wallenda fell. Totally freaked me out as a kid.

Why do people eat snakes, turtles or each other? Just go vegan!

  23. This post of Enty's didnt make a whole boatload of sense to me. At any rate, yes the Grand Canyon walk was a stunt but it was pretty amazing. I would have been sick looking down. I wasn't into the whole god talk thing but whatever got him through it. His family is his family, they are very supportive regardless of the judgement on their looks. He's a hometown boy for me from the SRQ so we are very proud!

  26. JoElla - Wide World of Sports! I totally remember that show. I mostly used to watch it in the winter when we were stranded inside by crappy weather with about 3 channels to watch. The agony of defeat which, in my house, we always said as "the agony of da feet"!

  27. Entry, are you a STL fan?? Didn't watch the game, just watched some movies I had recorded, and kept checking the weather radar on my phone. I am such a bad STL fan... *sigh*

There is no way you could pay me enough money to live naked in a jungle for 21 days. No way, no how, not ever.

  28. Wallenda also thanked Jesus the entire time when he crossed Niagara Falls. I watched that from start to finish and it was breathtaking, even though the TV gods made him where a safety wire, which ended up affecting his balance. He feels it is his God and Jesus that helps him to do these death defying feats, and who are we to differ? Good for him.
