Jessica Simpson has always said that her high school would never let her sing or perform because she was too good and it made the other kids feel not as good so parents complained. Obviously, she did perform in this musical in school. Pretty good too.
As Simon would say she is yelling the song.
ReplyDeleteSurprised I watched this til the end, but it was awesome! Always found JS's voice and stage presence quite good in general, mostly from her Christmas special. If anyone can bring the Variety Show back, I vote for NPH and JS.

ReplyDeleteAs a veteran of many terrible high school & local theatre productions, I will say she's very good. Considering especially that she was so young here.
ReplyDeleteShe has that way of emoting & acting the song & keeping the audience riveted on her throughout--natural charisma. I'm not surprised this girl became famous for something.
Oh! and her figure here....That rack is famous for a reason! Wow!
ReplyDeleteNot so bad!!!!
ReplyDeleteshe must be about 14 in this video since she was only 16 when her first single broke on radio. I had no idea she was this talented.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know she was a dancer too. Nice fouetté!
ReplyDeleteDamn it, girl. Get it!
ReplyDeleteShe is so good! She should consider stage acting.
ReplyDeleteShe is good! She should sing again instead of whatever it is she's doing.
ReplyDeleteThe dancing wasn't impressive- but that's coming from a dance snob. Overall, though, very well done. Much better than that innocent but naughty bit she was trying to market herself as.
ReplyDeleteJessie J has said the same thing about not being allowed to sing in high school because she was so good the others got jealous. True or not, I think that's a pretty conceited thing to say.
ReplyDeleteJessica could always sing, she was never like Britney, but her songs were boring and she didn't have much star power in her videos, IMO.
I remember when she sang at a mall i worker out when she sang "i wanna love u foever" and u could hear her big voive throughout the whole mall! But at least her voice is good.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the typos! Lol
ReplyDeleteI think Broadway musicals could be her thing. She has talent. Too bad she went the dumb blond route.
ReplyDeleteJessica has always mystified me. Her voice was so strong on her first single, and then later in her singing career, she sounded awful live. But this is pretty great...and confuses me even more.
ReplyDeleteThat's what happens when record executives and stage parents decide what you SHOULD be rather than what you are naturally. Sad... Also I don't buy that "I was too good in high school" crap. I taught voice to many high schoolers and believe me, those with the best voices always got the parts.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea she could sing like that. She has a very strong voice and would do great on Broadway. The thing I remember her for is the dumb blonde act on her reality show. The "is this chicken or tuna?" comment.
ReplyDeleteYeah I remember really loving her first single and being impressed w her voice....but them after that she became so "affected" with her vocals that I lost interest. Sad.
ReplyDeleteFirst post for this lurker to say I agree- there's a good voice under all the breathy, cutesy, affected way she sang since she got famous.
DeleteWhy the hell didn't she do Broadway? What a waste of talent.
ReplyDeleteFeraltart - because being on Broadway is HARD work - 8 shows a week, long rehearsals. Does Jessica Simpson really seem like someone interested in putting out that much effort?
ReplyDeleteI'm not actually sure I've ever heard her sing before, she has a nice voice.
She's good! And she's playing the character in the play who was supposed to be too good for the chorus. This is the song that got replaced in the movie version with much crappier song, which was very disappointing to me.
ReplyDeleteShe's loud as hell and warbling her ass off, so she can project and do a heavy handed, schmaltzy, drunken, first grade star search level vibrato, plus she's got big boobs, blonde and is caucasian. She's got the perfect voice for broadway, or off broadway. No nuance, no emotion, nothing complicated or difficult. Just yelling and warbling, and looks attractive.
ReplyDeleteWow, @Anna, what a perfectly bitchy comment. I've seen lots of teen theatre performances and I wish more of them would put even half as much effort into their work as Jessica did there. I'd never seen/heard her perform before and am shocked to see she actually has a very solid talent base to draw from, if she ever chose to. Not just big boobs, white skin and a loud voice.
DeleteAlso want to mention that a lot of kids do Junior Theater outside school. I wonder if this was actually a high school production or maybe Jr. Theater. Parents often have to pay big bucks for their kids to participate.
ReplyDeleteBroadway would give her some legitimacy as well if she wanted to make a change in her career after her baby is born.
ReplyDeleteWow. It's sad that she has become more of a "celebrity" than a performer. Looks like the girl had talent but now she is just kind of a joke. Asslee must truly hate her guts.
ReplyDeleteShe is phenomenal, for when this was done. I think Jessica Simpson always knew tuna wasn't chicken.
ReplyDeleteHigh schoolers are under the impression that the Broadway Belt means singing as loud as possible, rather than a way of singing. For high school, she was impressive.
ReplyDeleteRemember Jessica Simpson came up with Britney, Justin, etc. and I think Daddy always intended for her to be a pop singer.
I remember her telling once how when she auditioned for the Mickey Mouse Club Christina Aguilara sang right ahead of her and after hearing her she froze.
I agree that if she got some post-baby training she could relaunch her career with some success. Look at the stream of actresses who played Sally Bowles several years ago. Of course, Sally wasn't supposed to be all that great so the bar wasn't as high.
I actually had no idea she had talent. I now love more than her shoe designs.
ReplyDeleteOh, and don't forget this is an amateur production with NO EDITING. Good for her.
ReplyDeleteDear Timbebomb: That's what musical theater was thought of then.
ReplyDeleteI believe the reason she doesn't perform live is because she has unbelievably bad stage fright and anxiety. To the point she couldn't get a handle on it. No good for live broadway type stuff. But I have always found her to be a talented vocalist.
ReplyDeleteShe has absolutely no stage fright or anxiety, and has performed live pretty much her entire adult life. The reason why she doesn't much anymore is because there just really isn't a demand for it. Her songs are weak, and her music career didn't take off the way her reality/celebrity career took off. Basically, she doesn't sing live much because people don't buy tickets to her shows.
DeleteI saw her open for Rascal Flatts a few years ago. She had no stage fright. But it was sad because she was trying so hard to reinvent herself as a country singer and as good as her voice was, no one was really listening. They were talking and waiting for the headliners. And she was wearing short shorts and high heels or boots and looked ridiculous.
DeleteWow! How incredible is she!
ReplyDeleteBwaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!! I could not in a million years imagine in my high school days having to be next on stage after THAT performance. It would be like this performance, then followed by me looking like a lukewarm version of Napoleon Dynamite's dance. No wonder parents complained.
ReplyDeleteSure, she *could* have a career in theatre if she so chose, what with her name and connections but I'm inclined to believe that she's pretty happy raising babies and building her fashion empire.
ReplyDeleteOkay that's crap, my brother graduated with her. The ACTUAL reason parents complained is that she would blow off rehearsals to go audition in Florida. Everyone knew she was talented, it just wasn't fair that she was "too good" to rehearse with the commoners.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, she is a total sweetheart. Her parents and sister are dicks.

ReplyDeleteok, then great for high school. In my humble opinion, in the real world, on the radio, that's too loud and warbly and has no nuance, could a producer make her sound perfect and make her tone it down, absolutely, have I ever bought any of her songs or liked her style personally, no. To be perfectly honest, I'm a singer and so I'm judging her harshly. Probably just jealousy over her... no, not jealous, just judging her harshly.
ReplyDeleteAgreed she was made for Broadway but her Daddy so wanted her to be famous like Britney and pushed her to do something different. And voice snob here: her voice is OK but it's not that unique nor lovely. I seriously doubt she would have made it really far in the ranks of B'way either.
ReplyDeleteWonder what they did with the "Tits and Ass' song in this high school production...Snicker.
I always knew she could sing but didn't know like that! Wow!
ReplyDeleteI just watched this again. I haven't been this wowed in all American Idol, X Factor, Voice seasons combined. I'm ready for America's next Broadway Star/Tony winner type show.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed that. I would have loved to be able to perform like that in high school. I had no idea what she is capable of! Thank you, Enty.
ReplyDeleteGo on Jessica! That was really good, especially for a 15 yr old. She looks so cute. Her body is crazy!!!
