I think the mentholated ones are good when you have a cough. It's an age-old congestion reliever. When I have a real cough, I LOVES me some cherry Halls.
Water and/or tea usually work better for me depending on the type of sore throat pain I have. Sometimes, Ricola works too, but menthol drops almost never work for me, those affect my sinuses more than my throat. For the worst throat pain, spray works the best.
I find that Fisherman's Friends are pretty good for clearing things out and numbing things - and that it helps with coughs as well as sore throats. Otherwise the other brands are pure candy, no matter how they try to sell it.
I think they work, probably not any better than a cherry lifesaver. However, in the middle of allergy season, just try and take my Ricola Lemon Mint away and I will smack you into next Thursday. I literally cannot sleep without a cough drop of some kind. I have woken up from cough syrup with codeine to have to pop another one in before rolling over and going back to sleep.
So funny you asked this question - I have a BAD sore throat, maybe its allergies and I HATE feeling like this. I love Vicks Menthol cought drops- they totally sooth my throat. Don't feel like running to target :(
In some countries, Halls is advertised strictly as a mentholated candy. They are not really that expensive, either.
Some cough drops do provide temporary relief. The menthol provides a cooling sensation, and sucking on hard candy produces saliva, which can soothe a scratchy throat. A few cough drops also include benzocaine, which is a numbing agent.
If you really want to relieve your cough, you're probably better off getting a codeine prescription or using dextromethorphan-based suppressants. Just sayin'.
@kate and @f281561...there is a new Luden's orange with vitamin C that is as delicious as the original. Also, Sam's sells the original in a huge 2pack.
Cough drops aren't for sore throats, really, they're to suppress coughs caused by throat tickles. If your throat is sore, Throat Coat herb tea helps. Also Chloraseptic spray or lozenges.
My kids were never allowed cough drops at school unless they were dispensed by a school nurse. If a kid gave a cough drop to another kid he/she could be suspended.
Seriously. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I like the Chloraseptic septic spray, like Paula said. And gargling the time-honored, but yucky, salt water mix actually works.
When I had bronchitis the doctor had me use Strepsils (Cepacol lozenges) because the numbing agent would help paralyze the muscles needed for endless coughing. Except it would also make my tongue numb and give me mush mouth.
When I have a regular cold I prefer ginger candies to mints.
I don't find that cough drops help my cough much--usually that's due to post-nasal drip, and a good antihistamine does much better in helping that--but sucking on them does make you salivate, and that helps keep your throat moist, which is soothing. I generally go for the Ricolas, usually lemon-mint or echinacea--they seem to help my throat a bit more than the other brands and don't taste too godawful.
If you're really coughing your head off, though, especially if your cold is supposedly over but you still feel like crap, it's probably bronchitis (BTDT way too many times)--time to haul your happy ass off to your local medical practitioner to get some antibiotics (because really, you don't want pneumonia; BTDT too) and hopefully some good codeine cough syrup. Not sure how much it really helps, but boy, do I sleep like a log...zzzzz... (WTF is drinking OTC cough syrup for fun supposed to do for you, anyway? I always thought the cherry kind tasted pretty good, but it's not as if I ever got a buzz off it.)
(Oh, and Enty? You're scraping the bottom of the barrel, bubela. Time to ask something like, oh, "what music was playing when you lost your virginity?" Much more interesting...)
paula has it down. THROAT COAT tea is the best for a sore throat. Cough drops do help with the tickle though. Chloraseptic is a great numbing agent. Sore throats are the worst.
I'm prob the only one here, that thinks how lazy & lame to make a thread of cough drops!!! Seriously? Lazy day Monday!
Can I make a "Your Turn"?
What is your go to perfume on a first date. Same w/ the Gents. What is your go to cologne on a first date? Either dates, or on just a reg basis. What scent is your favorite? I've. Always been curious about that.
Find some manuka honey (it comes from New Zealand). A teaspoon straight up, in some hot water or tea, really helped me with my last cold. Amazon has it, and Whole Foods might, as well as a good natural foods store. I use Ricola mountain swiss herb (sugar free) to help unstuff my nose.
The horehound herb is excellent for cold relief, and they put it into candy. I've never bought the candy, but at first sign of a cold, I'll gobble down some horehound tea, and the cold is generally gone the next day. Seems like Cracker Barrel... all those places that have old-timey candy might sell it.
Straight honey is actually proven to be more effective than drops or cough syrup.
When I used to sing opera I would swear on hot water with lots of lemon to cut the phlegm and honey to soothe my throat. Warm lemonade works in a pinch too but not as effective.
Given my degree in epidemiology and my strong inclination to natural remedies, lots of tea and neti pots help really well. Follow with lemon to cut phlegm and honey to coast the throat. Honey is antifungal and certain unfiltered strains have been noted to reverse MRSA's antibiotic resistance for topical treatment. Cranberry juice is good too and is an anti-inflammatory if I remember right.
And gargle hot salt water. Best thing for any kind of infection in the mouth, really. :)
Above all else, rest!!! If you're constantly sick with throat ailments such as tonsillitis and strep, your tonsils aren't filtering as they should. I had mine out at 27 due to chronic tonsillitis. Best thing I ever did given they were shot :(
I've had some success with bee propolis for sore throats.
ReplyDeleteThey don't work for me. I just drink lots of water. The sore throat ones always make me worse.
ReplyDeleteExpensive candy. I thought this had been proven by scientific research. You're better off with a nice cup of tea with honey.
ReplyDeleteWhy would you take a cough drop for a sore throat? They're cough drops, not sore throat drops.
ReplyDeleteExpensive candy.
ReplyDeleteThey help me when I have that tickle in the back of my throat.
ReplyDeleteI think the mentholated ones are good when you have a cough. It's an age-old congestion reliever. When I have a real cough, I LOVES me some cherry Halls.
ReplyDeleteIf you want a cough drop, I think cherry lifesavers work great.

ReplyDeleteExpensive candy. My first addiction. Strict Catholic school upbringing - no food, gum, etc in class. But "cough drops" were allowed! Yum.

ReplyDeleteThat shit doesnt work.
ReplyDeleteusually just candy but there's one that worked for me, sepacol I think? It soothed a sore strep throat.
ReplyDeleteFisherman's Friend. Actually works.
ReplyDeleteSo funny you asked this question - I have a BAD sore throat, maybe its allergies and I HATE feeling like this. I love Vicks Menthol cought drops- they totally sooth my throat. Don't feel like running to target :(
ReplyDeleteDon't you mean whiskey?

Loved Smith Brithers cherry cough droops as a kid. But no they dont help at all with sore throat or cough, anymore than cherry lifesavors.
ReplyDeleteRemember Sucrets? They numbed, but they tasted awful!
ReplyDeleteCough drops containing sugar may "feed" the bacteria and make it worse.
ReplyDeleteA co-worker once gave me something called "Fisherman's Friend". It was so harsh, that I didn't coughed again for fear he would give me another.
ReplyDeleteLudens are expensive candy that I love. Other cough drops help when I can't shake that tickle.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I get sick, I'm always happy to have an excuse to buy ludens. They are seriously delicious but do nothing for a sore throat.
DeleteMy hubby always makes fun of me as I buy Ludens and then regular cough drops. The Ludens rarely make it two days :)

Mom, yucky salt water really works. I tried it when i has the great 6 week bout of flu and flu related illnesses- it really helps.

ReplyDeleteFor a sore throat, I actually love to drink sugar-free cola. The acidic burn feels painfully good. Otherwise, gargle warm salt water.
ReplyDelete(And the fizzy feels good too.)
ReplyDeleteSalt water gargle and the throat spray. It's numbing enough to fall asleep and then hopefully sleep off whatever is ailing you.
ReplyDeleteSoda and ibuprofen are the best over the counter for a sore throat.
ReplyDeleteCepicol work pretty well but I don't like the way they make my mouth feel.
Halls work pretty well for a cough.
Anything (including Ludens) works for a tickle.
I used to love cough drops. For an actual cough, they work pretty well. They do nothing for strictly a sore throat, though.
ReplyDeleteCepacol. Or maple syrup whiskey!

ReplyDeleteThe bag of Halls Honey-Lemon Triple Soothing Action cough drops that I just polished off worked for me.....
ReplyDeleteLots of honey tea too.
Halls works. I have GERD and I get the most horrible sore throats that you wouldnt believe. Ricola's lousy, and the Luden's is useless.
ReplyDeleteI gargle with warm salt water. It helps some.
ReplyDeleteI agree with some of the above:
ReplyDeleteFisherman's Friend works.
Throat coat tea is good
And I'll add Delsym cough drops
I'm prob the only one here, that thinks how lazy & lame to make a thread of cough drops!!! Seriously? Lazy day Monday!
