Ryan Gosling decided to stay away from the premiere of his movie Only God Forgives in Cannes and it is probably a good thing as it was booed consistently throughout the screening. Gosling is directing a movie in Detroit, but he could have got away for 24 hours if he wanted. He chose not to. I think he knew the audience would not like it. The movie is incredibly violent and has some inventive new ways to kill people which are shown in graphic detail. Way worse than Jesse James cutting off his pinky. Ryan apologized for not being there and said he was sending good vibrations. That is so Hollywood. Kind of like he has been eating too much health food and not enough red meat and bacon. Either that or he is on a Funky Bunch kick.
Can't really blame the actor for the movie though. It was a Nicolas Winding Refn film, blame the director.

ReplyDeleteHe couldn't have just gotten away for 24 hours if he wanted to. A) That's easily a 36 hour turn around trip. B) the costs involved with shutting down for one day, including resubmitting for permits, is ridiculous. Very, very rarely does any film do that for any reason.

ReplyDeleteagree with @whocares you can't just leave the set without incurring hundreds of thousands in costs to the production besides being in breach of contract. When Johnny Depp daughter was sick he paid back over a million to cover the costs for being gone a few days for the movie he was working on at the time. But he could afford it.

Gotta disagree with FSP. On both counts. The Place Beyond the Pines was incredible, as was Drive, and 95% of his other work. The only thing I don't like is that he's with Eva Mendez when he clearly is my soulmate.

Ryan is awesome: great actor, great voice, great looks, seems very charming and low-key, isn't a famewhore... And his movies are really, really good: Place Beyond the Pines, Drive, Ides of March, Crazy Stupid Love, Blue Valentine, Lars and the Real Girl, etc. I'm gonna bet this new film is pretty kickass too! I for sure will be seeing it.

ReplyDelete@Tina, the production schedule of this film was set before the films in Cannes were announced. So, no, he wouldn't have been able to just schedule around it.
ReplyDeleteOnly ever saw him in Believer and Lars. Thought he was amazing in both. Now that he's all over the place, film wise, who knows. As for whatever film this is, sounds like it wasn't his acting they objected to, or was it? I'll never know as I have no desire to see it.
ReplyDeleteIf the French cinema class I took while studying in Paris serves me well, it's not surprising that a French/European audience wouldn't like a film so overtly violent. I could see them not being too attracted to what they probably think is gratuitous violence. My French professor alawys said American film is so much more in your face and blatant where the themes in French films are oftentimes more subtle and less brazen. Doesn't necessarily mean the film is bad...but what do I know!

1/ he's working on his movie and to go in Cannes=48 h min (flight,interviews,press conference and night premiere,night in Cannes and flight )
2/after Boston bombing,the insurance want that the crew stays in the same aera
3/since Waltz/Le Grand Journal incident, i can believe the insurance doesn't want their director in Cannes when he's filming

i never was not Refn's fan( too self-satisfied or over-indulgent and the violence often is gratutious in this movies) but i like much Gosling's acting even if i think much buzz around him,it's because he's cool and he's a big "snake charmer" with the journalists)
They booed David Lynch's Wild At Heart too. And Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. If They boo a movie at Cannes I'll probably wind up liking it.

I loved Lars and Drive, I'm probably the only chick that's never seen The Notebook and has no idea what's it about.
ReplyDeleteAny movie with Eva Mendez was probably a "mortgage payment" and can't be held against him, unless that becomes the majority of the work. (At least that's my rule)
Cannes folk are like Goop to the 10th power in up-their-own-assedness, so keep that in mind.

Sigh. Ryan gets crossed off my favorite list. It's sad and frightening to me that people glorify cruelty and violence on the screen. Sadists don't need more inspiration from filmmakers.
