Dr. Joyce Brothers, the pop psychologist who pioneered the television advice show in the 1950s and enjoyed a long and prolific career as a syndicated columnist, author, and television and film personality, has died. She was 85.
Read the story this morning and didn't know who they were talking about because the article said "Joyce Brothers" and not "Doctor Joyce Brothers" Never heard her referred to without the "Dr"
I JUST got seasons 1-8 on DVD--finally shelled out for them, with BF's help. They could make that Dr. JB joke 20 years ago, but today's youth wouldn't get it.
Dr. Joyce Brothers was always the quiet, refined lady doctor. Johnny Carson loved her and had her on many times. I always thought it was so cool that she memorized everything about boxing to win the $64,00 Question. RIP to a fine lady.
I actually spoke to her on the phone once--I was working at the University of Georgia Psych Dept. at the time, and she called the office asking for a faculty member IIRC. Very pleasant phone manner, unlike a lot of other people...
"I brought my own mic!"
ReplyDelete-(Not Really Dr. J.B.)
RIP, lady. Another piece of my childhood gone.
(If anyone understands the 'I brought my own mic' reference, they get a hug from me or anyone of your choosing, or a cookie.)
ReplyDelete@ libby - Simpsons? I have boys who obsessively watch and quote Simpsons.
ReplyDeleteAnd hi lady, long time no see - darn my recent employment :-)! Hope you are well.

ReplyDeleteThere was a time when it seemed she was on every TV show there was. RIP

Aw, Frufra!!!!! YAY!

Nice to see you back. Hooray!!!
Dr Joyce Brothers is one of the people who helped make going to a therapist or counselor a 'normal' thing to do.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who has ever had a counselor help them owes a little debt to her.
I just vividly remember Roseanne Roseannadanna on Weekend Update singing about Dr Joyce Brothers. Good thoughts for her family.
ReplyDeleteGod bless her and rip, but she was so stiff on camera! Lol

ReplyDeleteRIP. I just saw her last week on a rerun of Match Game. She wasn't very good at that game, but she was great at everything else :) Very cool woman.

ReplyDeleteRIP, Dr. Joyce--you were definitely a class act.
